Saying “It is what it is,” former New England Patriots running back Laurence Maroney unveiled his thoughts on his trade to the Denver Broncos Tuesday to the Boston Herald‘s Karen Guregian.

“You really can’t ever be good enough. It is what it is. It was just once of them situations,” Maroney said by phone. “I had some great opportunities there. I felt like I had some good times running the ball, and some not so good times. It was just one of those things. I got hurt. I could never really get going. But I loved playing there. But now I have to move on to Denver.”

What would he miss most about New England?

“The fans. We had some good fans, and my friends, really. Benny (BenJarvus Green-Ellis) and the rest of the running backs. We had good chemistry there,” Maroney said. “It’s going to be a brand new start. I’ll have new guys to meet. New England was definitely a great place to play. I had a lot of fun there. The fans were definitely great. I’ll definitely miss my fans, my true fans.”

The Herald describes Maroney’s tone as “somber,” but not with bitterness or resentment. After a brief conversation with one Herald writer via Twitter, we’re told Maroney called Denver “a great situation.” Hopefully he means it and will come to embrace it — he has a fresh start in Mile High.

I bet he's upset cause he about to play for a bad team instead of a Super Bowl contender team. One week he playing with Tom Brady, Wes Welker and Randy Moss and the next week he playing for Kyle Orton, a beat-up O-Line and a no name Wide Receiver. I would fell somber too. I'm Just saying, sad but true from a Broncos fan.

    Bad team my ass

You're a crank not a Broncos Fan. I came to Denver from Los Angles 10 years ago, have adopted the Broncos as my team, and have never seen so much one-sided negativity from some of their fans. Apparently a lot of fair weather fans here in Bronco Land.

On balance the trade will be a plus IF Maroney proves healthy. The Broncos were going to have to spend a draft pick on a running back next year anyway, with Buckhalter not getting any younger and being injury prone. If Maroney works out, they can use that pick to address weaker areas of the team.

It is what it is? Not it is what it could be? This is just too much, like he really feels like the Denver Broncos are the pit of disdain.

I'm hoping it's more sad to see the end to his days in Boston, then fear of what's ahead in Denver.

Didn't Denver beat New England last year. Actually, If I remember correctly, outside of one pretty bad losses, Denver has pretty much owned New England.

  • Katch22

Bronco fan? Ya right why don't you go back to your Pats message board.

  • Katch22

I think he was saying that more about the Pats. I would feel beat up and betrayed too if I got traded/fired.

Hope this puts a chip on his shoulder and he does well for us. I'm sure once he gets here and talks to local reporters and sees our fan base his tune will sound more upbeat.

  • PuttDaddy

I'm a Pats fan. You guys got someone with upside and a 6th round pick for a 4th round pick. So what if it doesn't work out? I think you got a bargain. I kept expecting him to bust out and have a big season, but it never happened, his rookie season was his best. But he ran well in stretch of 2007 when Pats went almost (sigh) undefeated. His teammates seemed to like him. I'm sure he's just disappointed and sorry to be leaving his friends in this area. I hope he goes on to have a successful career. Good luck with him.

  • Nisse

why would he be upset? he will be active on gameday with the broncos. he wasnt active with the Pats

  • Big_Pete

Yeah, his potential and upside always seems to get derailed by injuries. I wanted us to draft him instead of a QB in 2006, but that didn't exactly work out. I saw Maroney as being a possible Terrell Davis replacement. Apparently Shanahan did as well, but he wanted to get a QB instead.
Well, here's hoping Maroney pans out. I know that I'll be there every home game to cheer him on, and possibly the one in KC this year if my schedule allows it.

He needs a dose of Jim Saccomano before he shoots it off to the media. He has feelings about his old team, but he must soon realize, if he wants to be on good terms with the Denver fans, (who will be far superior to what he had in Bean-Town), he must express a desire to be here and the motivation to perform for THESE fans.

I hope he runs the ball better than he runs his mouth!

And we got rid of a good young man to make room for him. Yes, it's a business, but how are you not going to consider your circumstances. MILLIONS of people are out of work and you're sad that one team wants to pay you thousands of dollars to play the game you tried your whole life to play and another one no longer did?

“seems to get derailed by injuries”

is that not what the Broncos look for when they're scouting for running backs?

Scouting report feedback, question three (circle one): Does player look like he may not make it through- Two Games, Seven Games, Entire Season, Player is completely healthy no sign of injury concern (do not draft)

  • Big_Pete

You are right. lol. Moreno, Buckhalter, now Maroney.
Although, if you think about it, wasn't that pretty much a Shanahan mantra as well? We kept signing injury prone guys. Either that, or they were healthy and we made them injury prone. Just look at Shanahan in Washington. Portis, Johnson, Parker. All 3 of them are more iffy to last a season than Moreno, Buck, and Maroney.
It must be a growing trend for Dove Valley, and those who defect from Dove Valley. haha

    You forgot one last option:

    FHAT THE WUCK??? :-)
