Alphonso Smith has been traded to the Detroit Lions for tight end Dan Gronkowski agent Drew Rosenhaus has confirmed via twitter.

Smith was on the bubble in Denver as I pointed out earlier. Gronkowski comes to Denver as the second to last draft pick of the Lion in the 2009 draft (255th). Gronkowski played hop scotch between the practice squad and regular team roster for the rest of the season.

He was activated December 1st against the Baltimore Ravens after an injury to Brandon Pettigrew.

UPDATE: The Broncos have released wide receiver Britt Davis, Josina Anderson of Fox31 is reporting.

Six moves remain for the Broncos final roster, keep it here.

    wow…

  • TheTroglodyte

It really sucks seeing a trade up 1st round pick get traded for a 255th pick just one year later BUT considering how well Smith panned out and that Dan actually looks like a serviceable #1 TE if needed, this was a good move.

I think of it this way, without the draft day trade for Alphonso Smith, it is highly unlikely that Tim Tebow would have been drafted by the Broncos this season…

  • Chombom

At least we got a player and a 2011 peak.

    He deserved to be cut.

  • mirose

Trade a #14 pick (Earl Thomas is a pro bowler for years to come) for a #255 pick. That's why you don't hire 30 year old to run your $800 million dollar company.

This type of a bonehead trade never happened before Josh McD and will never happen after.

Miami got a 25th pick AND a 40th pick from SD for their #12.

  • mikebirty

Bill Gates was releasing Windows 3.11 at 30
Mike Shannahan traded 1st, 2nd and 6th to take Moss

  • Kawike

Well, at least the mistake has been admitted and the team can hopefully move on without too much of a loss because of it. Maybe Cox and Thompson make up for it…

  • flbronc

so should we start naming shanny's brilliant first round choices- most of which didnt pan out? George Foster, Jarvis Moss, Deltha Oneal, Willie Middlebrooks, Marcus Nash…. True, he never traded a first round choice for one of those all pro players, but he picked them over much more productive players.

the point is that the draft is a crap shoot. mcd admitted that he didnt have all the best prep and information for last years draft.

at least we got something for our quarterback that we drafted after lineart…

  • crazykid

no, Cox and Thompson WILL make up for it

  • Shawnjones

Hahaha we'll see you eat those words, you have to be given the opportunity… Now you'll see him shine

  • Shawnjones2

Josh McD and the entire coaching staff will be osted next year. I'm sure crazy judgement.

  • Shawnjones2

You now have 2 players to boo. They will indeed have an excellent season: Phonz and Scheffler make it happen guys

A little more on Dan Gronkowski:

    College career

Gronkowski sat out 2004 at Maryland as a redshirt. In 2005, he saw action in five games and made two receptions for 37 yards, including a career-long 25-yard touchdown reception from Sam Hollenbach. In 2006, he saw action in all 13 games including nine starts. He had two receptions for 11 yards. He received the George Boutselis Memorial Award for team's highest GPA. In 2007, Gronkowski played in 11 games including eight starts and caught seven passes for 66 yards. He received the team's C.P. “Lefty” McIntosh Award for public service.

In 2008, he played in all 13 games and started in 12. He caught 29 passes for 287 yards and three touchdowns, including one matching his career-long 25-yard reception in 2005. He also some action on special teams and returned two kicks for eight and four yards. He was named an honorable mention All-ACC player.

He earned a degree in marketing and was pursuing an MBA when he was drafted. He was also a Rhode Scholar nominee his final year at the University of Maryland.

Draft Countdown assessed him as the 21st-ranked tight end prospect for the 2009 NFL Draft. The NFL Draft Scout ranked him the 11th out of 96 tight end prospects and projected him as a fifth or sixth round selection.

    Detroit Lions

Gronkowski was drafted 255th overall (2nd to last) by the Detroit Lions in the 2009 NFL Draft. On June 25, 2009 he signed a three-year $1.21 million deal which includes a signing bonus of around $26,000. He was waived on September 5, 2009 and signed to the Lions' practice squad a day later.

Gronkowski was promoted to the active roster on December 1, 2009 after tight end Brandon Pettigrew was placed on injured reserve due to a knee injury. He caught his first pass against the Baltimore Ravens on December 13. He was waived on December 17, and re-signed to Lions' practice squad on December 20.

After his practice squad contract expired, Gronkowski was signed to a future reserve contract on January 5, 2010.

Traded to the Denver Broncos September 4, 2010.

Rey Malauga went to Cincy exactly one pick after Alphonso Smith… When I heard of the trade I was so sure McD was gonna snag that stud Middle Linebacker… FAIL

    Second FAIL–Hillis to Cleveland.

  • TheTroglodyte

Yeah because Hillis is such a proven commodity he's running 2nd (to Mr. Fumblitis himself Jerome Harrison) after his promotion from 3rd string once Hardesty was injured for the season.

  • crazykid

The saddest part of the whole thing is that Denver got the better end of the trade…

  • iskabibble

Hillis has done more in this league than Quinn…

  • yogi
