The man... The myth... The Haircut

Is anyone else tired of everyone talking trash about our Broncos? We have a good football team. We can beat anybody in the NFL. Will we blow teams out…No. Can we play well enough to beat the Colts, Ravens, and Chargers…hell yes we can! We have a good smart coach, and we can do this. Final record aside, I think we will be competitive in nearly every game we play this year…As a fan, that feels great.

Same as last year…All the punk experts saying we can't…I was listening to Grimm's HOF speach today at the gym…That gave me chills to hear what they did starting out with 4 rookies on their offensive line. In a later year, 10 straight identical runs against the mighty Dallas defense to win the game. Hell If I see just one game like that this year I would f$#king love it! Come-on Moreno, Harris, Walton, and Kuper! We need to be able to run on the right side this year!

From what I am reading it sounds like both Decker and Thomas left the field limping. Does anyone have an update? When is this going to end?

The thing I'm tired of is everyone saying how horrible we'll be this year. I keep listening to the radio and experts and they all say the same thing; That the Broncos will be at the bottom of the AFC West and be a 2-4 win team. They even go on record by saying that last year they thought we'd suck, but we got lucky, and because of that luck, they think we'll suck even worse.
Let me ask you this. Why? What indications do you have? Because we got rid of Marshall?
Again, let me ask a quesiton.
Who is more important, a QB or a WR?
If you had your choice, who would you take, Cutler or Marshall?
Everyone would pick Cutler, so if that's the case, then if we lost Cutler and still finished .500, why would we finish under .500 if all we lost this year was Marshall.
Think about it for a minute. We didn't get any worse for losing a better and more important player, so how is it even fathonable to get worse for losing a lesser player? It just isn't possible!
And while we're on the subject, what gives people the inclination to pick the Raiders of all teams to be playoff contenders? Them over the Broncos? Why? Because they have jason freaking campbell? Are you kidding me? They go from a bottom dweller to playoff team because of jason campbell? That's just ridiculous. It really shows you how foolish the media is, and how gullible the public is for putting stock in what these “experts” think.

Both did, no update on either.

Jason Campbell had a better QB rating than Carson Palmer last year. The kid's decent, and the Raiders' offensive and defensive lines played better last year. That's why Oakland is a hot pick.

My main concern for the Broncos isn't at WR, it's at OL, and right now I can't say we have a top 20 unit, especially if Clady isn't ready by Week 1.

    Kyle,

Agree, looks like Bronx are headed for a tough year. However, watch out for next year. A very young o-line will have a year of experience, Tebow and Quinn the same, I think Moreno will be fine and the receiveing core looks solid (and will only get better) for years to come. Lots of changes that we won't reap the benefits of for another year.

On defense: If Ayers steps up, and that looks like a strong possibility, with Elvis back and a developing young secondary, the future looks bright there as well. Still need to add some youth on the d-line and in general, but defense seems to be the place where free agents excel.

So be patient… this is a building year.

Also don't sleep on Matt Willis. He seems to really be stepping up his game. I'm seeing things in him that make me tell my friends “watch for this guy, he's gonna be great!”
The last person I said that about was none other than Brandon Marshall. I'm not saying he's like Marshall, I'm just saying that the last time I saw a guy blaze onto the scene like this because of his play was Marshall, and look at the talent he became. We could use another super talent at the WR position. Plus this is only his 2nd year, so he's still young, and humble because of where he was taken. Keep up the great work Willis!!!

We're all tired of the Bronco-bashing Dan, but look at it this way: The more they carp about our personnel, the more likely it is they will underestimate us. We can kick more ass as an underdog than as a favorite. Besides, we can take the heat.

After all, out of the 32 teams in the league, only 2 have had more Super Bowl appearances than the 6 for the Broncos. Put that in your pipe and smoke it San Diego with your ONE…(a loss, by the way!)

We'll get the last laugh, Dan. Never fear.

The year after Elway retired = year 1 of a new QB under Shanahan. We finished 6-10 and averaged 19.6 points per game. We were outscored by 4 for the season. Things only got better from that point on.
The year Plummer came, we actually averaged 23.8 points per game, and things went up and got better from there.
When Cutler took over, at years end we averaged 19.9 points per game.
The first year of Cutler being a full time started, with Shanahan as coach, we averaged 20.0 points per game and were outscored by 89 points for the year. Again, things only went up and got better offensively.
The year Orton took over, with McDaniels as coach, we averaged 20.4 points per game and actually outscored our opponents by 2 points.
What do I make of all of this?
1st year with new QB under Shanahan = 20ppg and went up
1st year with new QB under Shanahan = 23ppg and went up
1st year with new QB under Shanahan = 20ppg and went up
1st year with new QB under McDaniels = 20ppg **yet to be seen if we go up**

So why dear God, why do people predict doom and gloom for our Offense? Every year since Elway, the Broncos averaged 20ppg with a new starting QB, and the McDaniels era is/was no different. So why don't people expect the same thing? Everyone is a year into the system, everyone is a year more comfortable with the system, and everyone has a year more chemistry with the coach/eachother/the system.
Just like in the Shanahan years, we can expect the team to score more simply because of the familiarity with the coach and other players.

I also ask you this. Who is more important to a team, the starting QB or the #1 WR?
Everyone with any knowledge of the game will say emphatically that the starting QB is far more important than the starting WR.
With that being said, everyone thought we'd finish with 2-3 wins because our starting QB got traded. Well, we went from 8-8 with Cutler/Shanahan to 8/8 with Orton/McDaniels. So the “doom and gloom” people who screamed because we lost our starting QB was dead wrong. Orton replaced Cutler, and McDaniels replaced Shanahan, and we ended with the same results.
So you take an 8/8 team and jettison the #1 WR, which as we all agree is far less of a loss than jettisoning the starting QB. How in the hell do people again predict 2-3 wins?
If we lost nothing by losing a far more important player, then how can we lose more by getting rid of a lesser player? It just doesn't make any sense.
If Orton doesn't get injured, then I expect us to put up about 23-24ppg because they'll be that much more efficient and knowledgeable of the offense.
Sure, we might not have the excitement of a rocket arm QB, but whether a 20 yard pass is a laser or an average speed pass, the result is exactly the same.
I can't wait for the upcoming season. Sure, all the injuries have me concerned, and that can definitely hurt our chances at the division crown, but it won't be because of bad coaching/philosophy, it will be because of injured starters and injured backups. We could very well be starting players that under normal circumstances would be cut.
With all that being said, I see a solid 10-11 win season, with 8-8 being our floor, and 13-3 being our ceiling.
Let's go boys, light up the league!!!

Love the optimism Big Pete. The two big question marks on offense for me.

One: We are looking as at least two and possibly three rookie offensive lineman and that is a major concern. Guys like Clady that come in play pro bowl caliber football in their first year are few and far between. It also takes time for an o-line to gel. I think this group will eventually be great, but I do expect a lot of growing pains getting there.

Two: How much will Orton improve and can he stay healthy? I maintain he is the short term answer at QB and the upside is not that high… hope I am wrong.

Agree with you on the WR position. I actually think we will be better that last year. Running back is also another question and with a developing o-line that question mark gets bigger.

Like I said earlier I believe this team is a year away from being a serious contender. Eight to nine wins would be outstanding and 10-11 wins, as you suggest, would mean a lot of those question marks were answered in a big way.

    I hope you are right.

Here is my stance on the offensive line:
They are playing musical positions at the moment. Pretty much nobody is in the actual spot that they are *suppose* to be playing come opening game. The reason for this is because of injury. Because of this, 2 things happen.
#1 is that they can't get the proper reps at their natural position, which means that they have less time to get comfortable at their position.
#2 because they aren't at their natural positions, that pretty much means that they are constantly “out of position” during camp, which will make it the much harder to pick up your assignments and dominate.
I have confidence in our line to gel once Clady and Harris get back, which will allow the backups to go back to being backups instead of being our starters. This is where you'll start seeing our line gel quickly and really solidify our line. Our 2 rookies miss some blocks every now and then, but that's common. This is still just the end of the 1st week of camp, and that is what camp is for.
Other thing is Orton improving. There is a night and day improvement this year -vs- last year. Remember, Orton put up good numbers last year, so to see his game elevate as high as it has against this time last year, then he should easily top 4,000 yards and have more TD's and less INT's than last year, and that is by default. Sure we don't have Marshall, but we don't need him. He can easily be replaced by the rest of our WR group, which will not be a dropoff at all. Whether Orton completes 21 passes to Marshall and 1-2 to Royal and 2-3 to Gaffney, OR completes 7-8 to Gaffney, 7-8 to royal, 6-7 to Willis, and 5 to Stokley, the numbers will be the same. It just won't be 1 person hauling in a huge number of passes.
I should add that yes, I think Orton is a short term stop-gap QB until Tebow is ready. Whether that's sometime during this year, or next year has yet to be seen, but with Tebow kinda struggling, I'd expect Orton/Quinn to play this whole season, and then have Tebow earn the starting job next year.
I should also add that I'm not entirely confident that Orton finishes out the season as our starter, only because I'm not confident that he'll stay healthy, and I think that if he sits because of injury, Quinn will fill in and we won't miss a beat. Because of that, I think McDaniels will keep Quinn in the lineup and we'll ride his arm to hopefully a playoff spot.
