(Editor’s Note: Please join me in welcoming Jon Heath to the BroncoTalk staff! Jon hails from Broncos Zone and has been a frequent commenter on the site.)

On Wednesday, Denver Broncos fifth round draft pick Perrish Cox agreed to terms with the club, per the team’s official facebook page. Terms of the deal are not yet known.

Cox is the third rookie to sign, joining Jammie Kirlew and Syd’Quan Thompson, all late round picks. Praised for having “shut down corner” skills, Cox wasn’t expected to fall quite as far as he did in the draft. His slow 40-time (4.45) is claimed the reason he’ll fell so far. His speed didn’t scare off the Broncos. “He’s a player that is certainly more talented than where he was drafted — there’s no question about that,” Head Coach Josh McDaniels said.

While at Oklahoma State, Cox amassed 6 pass breakups, 10 interceptions, 134 tackles, a forced fumble, one fumble recovery and one blocked kick. While his defensive stats are attractive, Denver drafted more than just a defensive player. During his college career, he returned 117 kickoffs for 2,804 kickoff return yards, while scoring six times. “He’s not easy to tackle, he’s got good quickness and great vision,” McDaniels said of Cox’s college career. “There’s going to be some growing for him, no question, but he’s flashed some really big-time plays.”

Reportedly, twenty-three year old Cox has been handling some of the kick return duties during OTA’s, while looking pretty good on defense notching a few interceptions and pass break-ups.

Although he has some character concerns, (he already has three children and missed some curfews), Cox has unthinkable potential. Learning under the likes of Champ Bailey and Brian Dawkins, Cox is in the perfect position to become a great defensive back, while also being able to contribute on special teams.

another slow, short CB? oh boy. everyone said Elphonso had “ball hawking, shut down” abilites. um yeah that has worked so far. PFFTT. well at least we didnt give up a first rounder for Cox. a 5th rounder can be cut without losing anything vital.

  • Peterpajor

Acutally, speed is only a part of being a good corner. There is a certain amout of being able to just “getting there” when the ball is there that most great corners have. Great CBs get better as they get older, even as they get slower by getting older covering younger players. Instinct is huge. Also I would love to see us have a great return guy on punts, makes a big difference.

It's believed that Cox received a signing bonus of roughly $200,000 under the NFL slotting system.

That would give the former Oklahoma State standout a total base value of nearly $2 million with the standard base salaries of $320,000, $405,000, $490,000 and $575,000.

  • Dan

    Kerry,

I think the higher priority for Perrish right now is as a return man. Wouldn't you appreciate Eddie Royal's decreased focus on returns with an increased focus at #2 WR and/or slot WR? Plus, 6 feet tall and between 190 and 200 lbs is not small at corner back. As for his speed, according to Perrish, he was not 100% at the combine so my guess is might a little faster than 4.45. This season, if we can get 5 – 10 longer returns from a 5th rounder, I would say we did all right with the pick. Further, if he can push Nate and Alphonso for starting time in the nickel or the dime, then that would be great in exchange for a 5th round pick. What would it take for you to be satisfied with his performance in exchange for his 5th round pick?

  • 1240271097

I can't believe Perrish Cox agreed to terms with the club

  • Cousvinny33

Do ya think we ought to at least wait until we see a couple of preseason games before we decide anything on this kid. Geez.

  • ETL

Since when is 6'0 short for a CB? Is Champ short now? Come on man.

  • Onyon43

Already having three kids is a character concern? Poorly worded.

  • ETL

Why? Having 3 children when you're playing football and going to school full time is not responsible. Your children should be number one in your life. However, how can we tell that he doesn't put in time for his children? Maybe he stays in with his kids whenver he gets the opportunity. Oh wait… that's right he skipped out on curfew to party. Worlds #1 Dad.

  • Onyon43

Tell that to the single mom with kids having to work and go to school full-time to ultimately make more money…

My comment referred to the fact that he listed two reasons for character concern… 1) having three kids, and 2) missing curfews. Nowhere were the two linked. I was only calling attention to the fact that if he has character concerns, there should be more ample evidence of this, like say DUIs or arrests, or patterns of troubles in college. Children are not a character concern. And your comment about world's #1 Dad… the only reason that is published why he missed curfew (I'm assuming it is referring to the Cotton Bowl incident) is that he was visiting his girlfriend (mother of his children?) and got caught in traffic. He also owned up to it. I don't find where he skipped out on curfew to party, or that he has skipped curfew with the Broncos… I find your observation of his parenting skills petty and shallow.

Blah – Blah – Blah. Who cares. The only thing I give a shit about right now is why management is playing games with Doom. Pay the f***ing guy already. But noooooo, we had to play the hardball game and send him that “sign your tender or else letter”, why? Why the hell would we put him at odds? He comes into the voluntaries without a contract like a standup guy and this is his reward? Stupid, stupid, stupid. He wants to get paid like the top 5 guys? Gimme a break, you always overbid the numbers you really want in order to hit those numbers, its everyday business. Just give the guy a fair deal, he's obviously worth more than his $3.15mil tender, but we can sign/pay a injury prone OL but not pay our PROBOWL LB? Someone explain the logic (or lack of) to me.

  • Dan

    Stav,

I believe Doom's contract negotiation has been progressing separtely from the standard form letters that are being sent out to all players in the similar situation per the terms of the CBA informing them what their salaries will be if they refuse to sign their tenders. The deal will likely get done, and Doom will be a Bronco. I think his situation is very different from BM's and Jay's. Deep breath everybody.

  • kerry

well i do like him being a return guy instead of Royal. that i do like. however im not gonna believe for a second that he will get any playing time over Elphonso because in doing so MCD would be admitting he made a mistake in trading a first rounder for Elphonso. i dont believe, AT ALL, that anyone will beat out Elphonso for that specific reason. well unless Elf gets injured THEN a guy like Cox Or even Thompson may get some reps.

  • kerry

yeah the return game may improve. id like taking Royal off of returns.

  • kerry

oh thats right. i guess Thompason was the short CB we drafted. my mistake.

  • kerry

well its pretty simple. Dumervil is a one trick pony and one trick ponies dont deserve top five money. Dumervil is terrible in run support and cant cover a TE and isnt a sideline to sideline guy. so when you think about it, its pretty easy to see why he isnt getting paid. Chris Kuper didnt bitch about money, showed up to everything even if it wasnt mandatory and he got a 6 year deal.

  • stav

I hope so – I agree, you can't compare this to the ex-#15 and #6, they were just jerks. But I don't understand the game being played, we rarely have guys who can get to the QB, and now we have one who excels at this, why not lock him up asap? This is a standup guy who keeps his nose clean, keeps his mouth shut, and overachieves based on his size and draft spot. PAY HIM, and PAY HIM NOW. Agreed?

Off the subject and open to everyone, CBA and Directv, if the lockout occurs, does anyone know if you're screwed into paying for the NFL Ticket as its an automatic rollover payment season to season even if the lockout occurs. As a NJ Denver fan (24 yrs) my Septembers to Januaries are ruled by Sunday and I will be livid if I end up paying for a blank screen.

  • stav

Typical Kerry, but I don't mind it. One trick pony = 17 sacks, that's quite a trick I must say. I agree, top 5 money? NO WAY, worth more than his tender, definitely, you can't argue that point.

  • ETL

He actually admitted to partying. But okay.

  • ETL

I think he'll get the playing time if he's the better CB. McD is putting Orton on the hot seat, he's not gonna keep starting him to prove he didn't make a mistake.

  • http://broncoszone.blogspot.com/ Jon

    Kerry,
In a 3-4 defense often the OLB is just a DE with his hand off the ground. There aren't many Defensive Ends in the NFL that can play sideline to sideline like a true linebacker. Last year was Dumervil's first season as a LB, I agree he is terrible with run support, but with time I believe he'll get better.

  • robtink242

Buddy i don't fully agree with you… Kuper played OL his whole career… Doom's first year at OLB he led the league in sacks… Thats great, plus Doom never bitched about anything… he was here to the OTA's… you don't have any clue why he missed the earlier OTA's… He is a classy guy and never miss-represented the organization wrong. I can see him getting a 6 year deal similar to Kuper's due to his inability to cover.

  • robtink242

There is a reason why this guy came in the 5th round… To be honest both of the guys we drafted better learn some safety with there slow forty times. Plus how many CB's do we need… Champ and Goodman (studs), Nate Jones and Alphonso Smith (sketchy nickel), Tony Carter (Potential But wouldn't get a shot). Forget Thompson and Cox there sole purpose is to bring competition to the remaining guys.

  • kerry

actually Orton is being placed on the hot seat for two reasons, one McD loves Brady Quinn and wanted to deal Cutler for him last year but failed to do so, and the second reason is 2 words, TIM TEBOW. Ortons ass is on fire right now with all the heat McD is putting on it BECAUSE he has his guys that he wanted. both Quinn and Tebow are coveted by McD so ORton being gone is just a matter of time regardless or how well he plays. i mean would anyone miss Orton?? i doubt it.

that being said i dont believe Smith will be any less then in the nickel but certainly no more.

  • kerry

i dont agree. certainly not to paying Dumervil top money. where he was drafted is irrelavant. Rod Smith wasnt drafted and he was NEVER a top paid WR in the NFL. Dumervil deserves a raise but not a huge raise. 4.5 to 5.5 million with lots of incentives sounds about right. its like what Shanny gave Simeon Rice a few years ago. he gave him an extra million for 10 sacks, another million for 15 and another million for 20. that sounds good.

  • http://www.broncotalk.net Jonathan Douglas

Stav, have you not been watching McD handled all our other pro-bowl players? He just doesn't have the kind of management skills necessary to take care of his best players. I fear we will see the same thing happen when we have to re-sign Champ, Clady, etc.

Maybe once he has replaced all of Shanahan's players with his own, he can show some maturity in dealing with his all-star players.

  • Dan

When we sign Doom, I want him to do one favor for me. In week 5 against the Ravens, I want him to repeatedly sack that stiff Joe Flacco knocking that smug look off of Coach John Harbaugh's face. I did not appreciate the way we lost to them last year! Go Broncos!

  • stav

We were never, NEVER, going to give Marshall $10mill a year. No one can deny that, he's an 8-game suspension waiting to happen and how many times had this guy preached the company line only to pull some bs later on – too many times. I still question the Cutler handling but that's in the past now. If a guy like Doom doesn't get a fair lock up contract then why would anybody want to come to Denver of any value?

And who did McD replace really? Assholes.

  • stav

$2mill over the tender? I can live with that at $5.5 a year, I think that's more than fair when you add in the 10, 15, 20 sack $1mil bonuses. Pay for Play, what an odd concept. But again, we always end up letting the sack guys walk, now we have one with a chance to lock him up, why bs about it?

  • stav

Horrible game, Reed blowing up Moreno on that screen. Disgusting. I knew we would lose, just not like that.

  • http://www.broncotalk.net Jonathan Douglas

I can't say that Mike Leach was an Asshole – just not one of McD's good friends. :)

I agree that BM was a walking problem – Shanahan had to deal with his crap too. But somehow Shanahan DID manage him and Josh couldn't. Either way, he was going to be out of Denver when his contract was up – I won't argue that point.

I don't buy that Cutler was an A-hole. Hell, no one in Denver thought he was a flaming A-hole until he left. He was a talented kid that just lost the coach that was working him into a great QB. Josh totally mishandled the situation and Cutler (in turn) didn't help his situation by his actions after that. But I won't call him an A-hole.

While I think we'll lock up Doom, I certainly won't be surprised if Josh flubs up and he gets away. He's just not shown me he can manage players (and the egos and personalities that go along with them).

  • broncoman24

I would have to agree with Kerry and Stav on this. I wouldn't want to pay someone that can only pass-rush and nothing else top 5 money. If he was a DL, I would say yes, but he is OLB and needs to be able to cover and stop the run. With that said he should get paid, but not top 5 money. I actually wish we would trade him, because I have a feeling that he isn't going to do as well this yr. Teams will play to his weaknesses. I could be wrong, but that is my feeling on this.

  • kerry

what no article about how Robert Ayers was benched in favor of Jarvis Moss and some undrafted free agent bum? even the DP got it out. Ayers was placed on the sidelines and he wasnt injured and Moss was running in his place. i smell a bust.

  • MiamiMike

ESPN is stating McDaniels is thinking of cutting Quinn? leaving just Tebow and Orton
Meanwhile, McDaniels said he hasn’t made up his mind yet, but he is leaning toward keeping two quarterbacks active on the game-day 45-man roster because having more would “put us behind the eight ball at other spots.”

McDaniels said he hasn’t decided who his two quarterbacks would be if he goes that route. Currently, Kyle Orton is the starter, Brady Quinn is the backup and Tebow is third string. Even though Tebow has a long way to go, it would be a surprise if he is a game-day inactive.

  • MiamiMike

Coach Josh McDaniels is leaning toward keeping only two quarterbacks active on game days this season.
Activating a third QB would “put us behind the eight ball at other spots,” explained McDaniels. The Broncos will want Tim Tebow active for situational work, so Brady Quinn will likely be the odd man out.

  • Dan

    Kerry,

According to McD, Jarvis has worked hard in the weight room and on his OLB technique and he has earned the right to more reps at OLB. I don't think that is a knock against Ayers because he will get reps too. It was a coaching decision for 1 day. And, good for Jarvis because, he almost gave up last year after he was sent home to decide whether he should retire or not. It is hard to call guys busts so fast when they played as rookies in a position they never played before in a new system.

  • http://nation.theorangepage.com/blog Ian Henson

I think that this is more of just a wake-up call to Ayers. Then again it could be nothing, maybe Ayers going up against the first team offense is what the Broncos deemed necessary.

I didn't see enough of a story to make a story quite frankly. Ayers was brought in while Nolan was coaching. I trust Nolan's judgment on linebackers.

Jarvis Moss is a bust unfortunately. No, he shouldn't have retired, I like him as a backup, but I've seen nothing from him that would indicate that he'll ever be anything other than a full-time scout team linebacker. I guess the only real indication we'll have is when it's time to re-sign Moss.

The fact that Moss was splitting time with an undrafted rookie to replace Ayers to me shows that there is another story behind what the quote/unquote demotion actually was. Ayers could have had a blisters or a hangover and the temporary demotion was simply just a get your head out of your ass move.

  • kerry

im not buying the whole “motivational” sidelining of ayers. if thats what it takes to get a guy motivated then he shouldnt be on the team. there were questions of Ayers work ethic coming out of Tennessee and now they are showing.

  • kerry

if thats true then basically we traded Hillis and a 7th rounder for nothing? wow. another brain buster move by McD.

  • Kontinous

“But somehow Shanahan DID manage him and Josh couldn't.”

Really? Really? You mean early in his career while before he was full blown diva? You mean before he was in a contract year? I wonder how Shanahan ever managed that better than McDaniels did!?

And yes Jon, a lot of people bought that Cutler was/is an A-hole. A LOT of people.

It's really annoying to see your misguided McD hating. If you seriously believe that he “mistreats” all guys that aren't his than you're not doing your homework and you don't deserve to write for this website. All of your articles are extremely bias as well as uninformative. Well all get it, you like Cutler and Marshall “lighting up” the field but yet losing games, but it's okay because they have “potential”. Find something else to write about.

Mike Leach? Really? You're going to complain about fullbacks and long snappers? I hear McDaniels fired the old towel boy too.
