In a move not likely to result in a trade finally, Denver Broncos quarterback Kyle Orton has signed his restricted free agent tender reportedly.

Orton, who was tendered at the first round level, signed a one year contract worth $2.621 million.

The Broncos now have three quarterbacks under contract going into the draft. However, expect Denver to sign at least one more, “Camp arm,” before the start of training camp.

Orton faces stiff competition for his starting position for the second preseason in a row as a Broncos quarterback. Although he remains the teams starter according to head coach Josh McDaniels.

April 15th was the NFL’s deadline for teams to send restricted free agents offer sheets before their rights were reverted to their current teams. Orton’s signing comes one day after Tony Scheffler signed his tender.

Elvis Dumervil remains the only Bronco who has yet to sign his tender. Dumervil was tendered as a 1st and a 3rd round.

Maybe because no one else wants him??? I don't know, I think Orton does well in McDaniels system. Not great, though.

  • http://nation.theorangepage.com/blog Ian Henson

3,802 yards for 21 touchdowns and 12 interceptions is not bad at all. He could start for a lot of teams in the league, but as Donovan McNabb proved, there's hardly any player in the NFL worth a first rounder… Oh, wait.

  • Big_Pete

haha, the 1 player that I doubt would cause a riot if we lost is the only one signing his tender that is no threat of leaving. Irony anyone? lmao
I think Orton will do really well this year. I also think that he'll get injured again, and Quinn will do very, very good, and not give Orton his job back. Then the NFL will see why Quinn was drafted in the 1st round.

  • Dan

Orton will stay and will be fine if we can get a running game going. I am hoping we use at least 1 2nd round pick to get a solid guard…Let's give Olsen a try at center…God I love those University of Iowa offensive linemen.

With our 1st round pick, am I alone in thinking that we will select either Joe Haden or Earl Thomas way ahead of either McClain or Bryant?

  • Roy88

I think Haden is more likely than Thomas. We drafted 2 safeties last year, and McD will probably attempt to develop them. Haden would be great, but I think the most likely pick would be McClain. McClain is a great talent and leader, not to mention the release of Davis created a real need at his position.

  • monto

Definetly can't see us drafting Thomas with McBath and Bruton waiting in the wings, can't really see Haden either, we have got some decent back-ups and we've got more pressing needs. Definetly need to beef up the O-line, hasn't been addressed in FA.

Orton's done a lot better than a lot give him credit for, once the O-line is sorted and we've got the running game established then I don't have a problem with him starting. He might not be a showy kind of player like Cutler but at least he looks after the ball and gets the job done.

  • Andpark

I think you are totally right, its exactly how I picture this season going.

Just as long as Orton throws more than 31%!

  • kerry

i have never heard so much bullS**T in all my life. “oh Orton will do well” “or Orton will do fine” well “Fine and well” dont win games and ultimately championships. i guess nowadays what matters is if he does better then Cutler, not if he actually wins games. because there isnt anyone in their right minds thats could actually believe that ORton can bring home the Lombardi. in case anyone forgot, thats what really matters.

  • hope

    Kylen Orton suck's.

  • dogheadbrew

I feel bad for the guy. He arrives here as part of one of the most contentious trades in recent memory, basically with two strikes against him through no fault of his own. Then proceeds to adopt the system, team and philosophy and play well. I think even he would admit, privately of course, he is not the most physically gifted QB in the NFL, but he works as hard as he can to be the best QB on the roster. He can only beat his internal competition, and thus far he has. Now with all the work he's put into this, the Broncos are essentially forcing him to sign a “cheap” contract. I understand the business sense for the Broncos side, I mean why pay more than you have to? But the bottom line is that Orton hasn't done anything but bust his arse for us, and he is still getting the used and abused treatment.

  • guest

while i agree orton isnt a long term solution… playing devils advocate- trent dilfer has a sb ring. id take orton over dilfer.

  • broncosfaninal

Orton will probably lead his team to 8-8. Cutler will probably lead his team to 8-8. Sounds like we come out on top simply for the fact that we got the 2 1st round draft picks from Chicago.

I don't think anyone is saying that Orton is God's gift to the Broncos, or that he's a franchise HoF QB. I think they'll say he'll do well… that is, well for him and the talent around him.

  • roshon2411

I love how, when Orton and Super Bowl are brought up, everyone says, “Trent Dilfer and Brad Johnson won a Super Bowl”… True but go through list of winning Super Bowls QB's. Mostly, HOF's and at very least a Pro Bowl top tier QB's.

I hopeful but also a realist, Denver needs an answer at QB and it's not Orton.

  • Andy

Has there been a latest on Elvis?

  • Iwasfn47

I laugh at the people that complain about Orton, he's earned his job on this team, and appears to be our best QB on paper, coming off a pretty damn good season in a big change.

McD preaches no turn overs, that's why Orton and our offense lacked a deep ball all season, but as the Washington game showed us off the bat, Orton does have decent arm strength(certainly better than any one would like to give him credit for), but it's really his accuracy that takes a big hit when he hurls it. I think McDaniels really limited the amount of choices Orton had to make to help him ease into the system, as well as eliminated a lot of the deeper plays to stay away from turning the ball over and keeping our older secondary off the field.

I for one don't think Orton is the answer long term, or will win us a SB this year, but as of right now he's the best QB we have so I don't understand why we'd bitch about wanting some make believe scenario to play out this off season instead of supporting the team we're putting together. I also don't think MCXanders think Orton is the answer. If they would of felt Kyle was gonna be our long term guy they would have given him a multi year deal and locked him up in this non-capped year given he's a QB and still has a lot of question marks. Instead we locked him up on a cheap one year deal, and unless he blows us away we'll either give the possibly more talented Quinn a shot, or then address it in the draft the season after that.

Say our 1st 3 picks were Dan Williams, Brandon Spikes(i don't think we'll pick McClain that high, look at the quality ILBs in the 2nd round the past few years, the 3-4 doesn't call for 2 great guys in the middle, and DJs good enough for now), and Corey Wooten? Would our defense not be considerably better on paper than last year? Perhaps more upgraded than the offense has been downgraded with B-Marsh(remember Gaff's huge game in week 17 in Marshall's role)?

I'd assume Williams would instantly split time with Fields at back NT, and be a huge asset for us if Williams goes down again. If not, he learns from one of the best at the position over the last 8 years.

Spikes should be there around our 2nds imo. His 40 time may scare some but i'd wager that Andra Davis' 40 is very similar if not slower at this point of his career. He's a proven player, i don't care about what happened in the last 3 months, he was great for years at FL, and could really add a disruptive element to our D and feed off Dawkins, and hopefully bring some attitude to our quiet LB crew. Whomever is our 2nd ILB next season WILL be subbed out next year on 3rd downs as well, even if its McClain imo, as DJ is the clear ILB to stay on in 3lb sets at this point. That devalues McClain if we take him 11.

Wooten shores up the D-Line and gives us a good rotation of vets and younger ends that crash that line. With Green and Bannan past their primes, we need to build the future of our D-line.

    KEEP IN MIND:
I really, really wanted to add a guard or center to my 1st 3 but don't think any are realistic at our range. My ideal situation is that we trade down from 11 to say 18th with Pitt and take Iupati, and the 52nd as well. We could then take 3 guys in the 2nd, filling considerable holes with high talent in a deep draft, or we could package the 3 and move to the end of the 1st and nab Pouncey(shoring up the line for a decade), or someone like Cody(i don't like him as much as Williams but won't deny his talent is higher).

Guys people are sleeping on as possibilities for Denver early(NOT what i'd like necessarily, just obvious guys that COULD be on our lists, in most cases due to trading down, and in one up):

Jimmy Clausen- if he falls past Seattle, we'd be able to trade up.
Joe Haden- has projected as a good 1 corner for a long time, could be an instant upgrade over Goodman who struggled late in games.
Golden Tate- I really think he'll be the best WR in this draft in hindsight, he'd possibly be there at the top of the 2nd for a potential trade up.
Jared Odrick- An intriguing prospect and easily the top ranked 3-4 end on most boards.
Jerry Hughes- I don't think we'll go OLB in the top 2 rounds but Hughes is the type of leader that a team could fall in love with if he fell to the right spot. I see him being a hell of a player as well.
Dexter McCluster- an offensive mind like McD's could find a lot of great ways to use a guy like Dex from the get go.
Carlos Dunlap- Before the season he was thought to be a lock for a top 20 pick, character, and issues of motivation make him a 2nd at best imo now, if the right team lands him and motivates him, he could be a BEAST, and the steal of the draft potentially. OR, he could be a frustrating bust.
Linval Joseph- We could nab him with our later 2nd probably, and he has high upside at an important spot.
Right Tackle- Harris is a FA next year and has overachieved in his career in a lot of peoples minds. He could be overpayed by someone to play on the left next year, and we may not match offers if we feel he's either 1) worth too much to pay our 2 tackles(considering Clad's is getting a monster contract in about 3-4 years), or 2) not as big as we'd ideally want for our new system on the Right. Remember McD has stated many times he has wanted to get bigger on the line, and I think that includes Ryan Harris as well.

you guys should pack it in….your website has fallen from from bronco heaven to piss and shit. Sorry but its true. Pick it up or I'm out.

  • broncoinva9986

They need to pay Dumervil quickly…good news Orton signed….Funny how they value the first round picks but when first round talent such as Marshall becomes avaliable they want to go so damn cheap all of a sound…. That my friend is true Irony

  • Rob_Bronco

Oh no! Quick, everyone into panic mode! This site is not meeting the minimum standard for a sports blog as determined by “DenversFinest”! Whatever shall we do when you leave?

  • kerry

well you can always go over the to MHR. there MCD is a god and all of the blind followers have plenty of Kool-aid to go around. there all of you can do your hourly worship of MCD and Orton.

  • Big_Pete

    31%??? I don't get it.

  • DenversFinest

It was a motivational drunken speech. I've never seen broncotalk suck so bad in the last 2 years I've been blogging. MHR, as of late, has 10X more content, even though is cool aided down, at least its something. As for Fan from Spain and Rob bronco, I wasn't talking to you.

  • ETL

If Quinn throws more than 70% Denver has to give up a high pick and pay a higher price on his contract.

  • MrEast

Amen. I couldn't have said it better myself. I may not like all the throws he attempts, but he's a hard worker and a damn good person.

  • Pete

It'll surely take him till game 6-9 to get injured. So I'm feeling about 50% of snaps for Orton. Maybe upwards of 60-70%

  • HOPE

You just went and gave the youngest most talented team in the nfl.A qb smashes John Elways record his second year plaing.Best wr. ever after the catch at lleast i ever seen played. The Broncos took Mike shannaha's team and distroyd it with a 32 year old New England coach.Who act's like a cocky ass.I seen Kyle Orton play he falls down when no one even hits the guy.Ive seen a lot of Jake CUtler bashing.Jay played the game like a football player. Not like a cowerd Orton.

Denvger Broncos gave thier young talented franchise away for nothing but Kyel Orten and 32 year old coach.HOW DO YOU WANT THE DENVER FAITHFULL TO ACT.i NEVER IN MY LIFE THOUGHT THE BRONCOS COULD BE THE NEXT DETRIOT LIONS BUT IT LOOKS THAT WAY TO RIGHT NOW.

  • kerry

yeah its ten times more BIASED content without any objectivity whatsoever. and most of thier articles are all about specualting about what should happen in the draft. and that is just lame. they come up with 18 different ways to post the same content. im glad this site doesnt do that. they post whats relavant instead of inventing and posting “What if” articles. this actually posys what actually happens, not what they hope happens.

  • dogheadbrew

The reality is we're not going to like everything any of our players do. But considering the other QBs we could have gotten back along with the picks, we lucked out. Kyle might not be our long term starting QB for a championship, but could we really complain with him as a lifetime (from this point on) Bronco? I sure wouldn't.

  • Fan From Spain

when it comes down to Bronco news, one of the first places I check is here. If I want to read speculation, opinion and rumors i go to MHR. that simple

Kyle Orton isnt bad I agree with alot of yall when yall say he isnt going to lead us to a superbowl, inwhich thats what we want. In the long run he all we got to be honest I really dont see any potential in Quin if he was what we are trying to make him out to be he would have gotten more snaps for the browns. Who never had a legit Qb for him to be riding the pine for if he is what they say about him. Also how does everyone feel about this rumor going around about Tebow? me Im not a big Tebow fan he just hasnt proved himself to me yea he won a title and the Heisman…..but realize this he was throwing the ball to Percy Harvin when he won those, By the way if I could state killed in the NFL last season.
