PFT ran a story this morning pondering whether the Denver Broncos franchise was for sale by owner Pat Bowlen.

Citing rumors that had, “snaked around last week,” conveying Bowlen was, “looking to sell the Broncos,” PFT’s Mike Florio drew a connection between Denver and a potential full-owner of the St. Louis RamsShahid Khan.

Here it is broken down: If Khan were to not only purchase the 60% of the Rams currently owned by Lucia Rodriguez and Chip Rosenbloom, but also purchase the 40% owned by Stan Kroenke (owner of the Colorado Avalanche and the Denver Nuggets), then Kroenke could ideally flip that into a purchase of the Broncos as well.

To further solidify this hunch PFT points out that Kroenke was “reportedly interested in acquiring controlling interest in the Rams, but the league’s cross-ownership rules require teams in multiple leagues to be located in the same market.”

UPDATE: According to Bernie Miklasz of Stltoday.com the Rams will be sold to Shahid Khan.

UPDATE 2: Howard Blazer of Globe-Democrat reports that Kahn and his wife had an issue with the IRS as last as 2009. Allegedly the couple was sheltering millions of dollars from income tax. Though the couple has filed several law suits since 2009 claiming that they were misled by financial advisers. This likely will have at least minor implications in getting approval from 23 of the 32 NFL team owners who must vote on transferring ownership.

We at BroncoTalk want to point out that this is merely rumor, absolutely, but there is a decent connection there and  we would have to drop the ‘talk’ portion of our site title if we weren’t to bring it up… However as with all things in Denver is this good for the Broncos or bad for the Broncos, nation?

  • WhidbeyBronco

unfortunately this would explain much…. no big new contracts, trading 1st's for seconds to get 'value'. Older stars like champ & dawk who's money will soon become available…

Pat's about to generate some hate if this true.
and some death threats if he allows the team to be moved.

  • mikebirty

If Kroenke is getting money its not to by the Broncos but to buy Arsenal.

  • RolandoMcCain

There's not a single link to PFT, and the paraphrasing seems borderline plagiarism. Are you trying to get Kyle sued? For god sakes he's already lost his house to the snow storm!

This whole thing almost makes sense because of Bowlen's ailing health issues, but no, it's going to be a mind numbing McDaniels bashing-fest. I'm gonna go back and talk Mock Draft.

  • RolandoMcCain

Birty is on the money here.

  • http://nation.theorangepage.com/blog Ian Henson

He already owns a major portion of Arsenal or do you mean he's trying to buy a larger portion?

  • http://nation.theorangepage.com/blog Ian Henson

    Rolando,

Hah, that was in no way intentional. I did link them as the source, but it went away when I changed something. It's back up.

  • susan166

It has been mentioned by number of sources that Both Shahid Khan and his spouse Ann Khan filed a suit against many fiscal consultants in the Champaign County Circuit Court. Shahid Khan http://usspost.com/shahid-khan-usspost-com-5509/

LA Broncos here we come.Broncos will be sold and they will be in LA 2011 mark my words.I called it before the seson even started.when they traded Jay Cutler.
Pat Bowlen should give the Broncos to Mike Shannhan. How can they move the Broncos.Well Im ready for a change Denver gold miners is the next team denver gets.this will happen in 2013.Denver goes with out a team for a few years.

  • mikebirty

He's probably gonna try and buy the whole thing. After the debt ridden way that Gillette, Hanks and Glazer have taken over teams coupled with the economy, has made it impossible for him to take over Arsenal unless he has a considerable sum of money up front and in cash. Couple that with the fact that Arsenal are in a relatively weak position as a team and may be looking for a new manager in the summer makes it ideal for a takeover. If he's getting a war chest, I'd bet its for Arsenal.

  • WhidbeyBronco

bite your tongue! I'll keeel u!

  • SivNiz

There is now way in hell the broncos would move cities. They have absolutely no reason to move the team. The tax payers gave the team a new stadium, when most of the season ticket holders didn't want (myself included), AND we have the third longest sell-out streak in the NFL and with some 25,000+ fans on the waitlist for season tickets. This is an owners wetdream!

  • dogheadbrew

Kronkie likes to win, is willing to spend money and likes Denver. If Bowlen were to sell, there are a lot worse scenarios. Still, timing would be bad for the team, considering it is in upheaval and uncertainty at the moment anyway. All that said, Bowlen loves his Broncos, and I see this as a idle mind rumor. Like with most of Florio postulates, I say “Pft” dismissively.

All that said, Kronkie buying a minority stake and setting up a five or ten year succession plan, wouldn't be too bad either. I don't know of any other Bowlen who would/could take the reigns.

  • WhidbeyBronco

has anyone noticed ESPN's best posterization dunk compitition?

KJ over Hakim hands down!! Go Suns!

KJ & Elway two awesome #7s!

  • Serious1

The Broncos should be owned by the public; just like the Packers are. Their fans don't have to worry about the team skipping town, nor about erratic owners. A lot of things need fixing on the Broncos and I can understand why, after so many years, Mr. Bowlen's energy has begun to lag. A change in ownership, if done right, might actually help.

  • dogheadbrew

“To further solidify this hunch PFT points out that Kroenke was “reportedly interested in acquiring controlling interest in the Rams, but the league’s cross-ownership rules require teams in multiple leagues to be located in the same market.””

I guess the Avs and Nuggets need new ownership, or have to figure out a way to bunk with the Lakers/Clippers and Kings.

    lol

  • TheTroglodyte

OMG Now Josh McDaniels is running Pat Bowlen out of Denver??? IS NO ONE SAFE? Is McD going to take my house away from me and kick me out of Denver too?!?!?!?! :)~

  • herc_rock

I've read a lot of dumbass shit on pft. I mean A LOT, but that might take the cake.

  • herc_rock

    wow…just, wow.

  • WhidbeyBronco

Green Bay hasn't Signed a good free agent since reggie white… do u really want that kind of team?

  • http://www.broncotalk.net Josh Temple

Couldn't agree more, the only read scare was before the voter passed the new stadium. People felt that Bowlen was dangling the Broncos to Salt Lake city if they would cough up the cash.

  • http://www.broncotalk.net Josh Temple

I love the idea of Kroenke owning the team if Bowlen wants to bow out. You can't complain about his ownership of the AVS and Nuggets.

  • TheTroglodyte

KJ's dunk was nothing short of amazing!

  • http://manchester-architects.com T-Money

People that are actually buying into this need to take a deep breath and take their hand off the trigger. There is no way in the cold gates of a frozen hell that we would move cities nor is Pat Bowlen going to sell the Broncos. Not anytime soon anyway. Financially speaking it's not a good move on Bowlen's part and in the long run he wouldn't make that much money considering what he has now.

Other than the connections that have been pointed out, there really is no solid evidence that would suggest any hint of a factual foundation to any of this. It's just speculation. Nothing more, Nothing less.

  • WhidbeyBronco

used to have the poster on my wall

  • http://www.broncotalk.net Josh Temple

You guys are overlooking the biggest benefit of a sale to Kroenke, Elway as a minority owner!!!

  • dogheadbrew

Bowlen already approached Elway with that, and Elway refused. Besides, do we want Elway as an owner because he'd be good, or because we like him?

  • http://www.broncotalk.net Josh Temple

Elway refused because the ownership percentage Bowlen offered was too small. I don't think we would ever see the team move if John was an owner. I guess if we had to change owners, I would prefer one with deep pockets, that's something that Kroenke has.

  • dogheadbrew

I didn't know the percentage issue, sorry. But if Bowlen was stingy with his offer to Elway, I think that further reduces the likelihood he would sell now out of the blue.

Kroenke has deep pockets AND wants to win, as opposed to another major sport ownership in the mile high city. I have long been a fan of how the Avs have been run as well. If nothing else, maybe this little mental exercise will prompt Bowlen and Kroenke to at least think about it. Which would mean that I would definately have to get a job with Kroenke sports.

Finally, does anyone else notice when you use a word too often it begins to look wrong no matter how you spell it? And Kroenke never looked all that right to begin with…

  • CompUser

I think I remember reading back at the time of the offer that Elway refused because he wants to be part of the ownership group if/when LA gets a franchise.

  • anthony33

    What the hell is Arsenal?

  • Doom92

Its the Soccer league… I think?!?!

  • Doom92

I couldn't agree more either… I don't think that would ever happen, but I'm sure the Houston Oiler fans thought the same. However their thing was they wanted a new stadium at that time (I lived there) And the fans gave the Broncos one already.

    I don't think they'll go any where. Hope… you're just being paranoid man :-).

  • Ian M

“Arsenal are in a relatively weak position”, Hmmm. They are currently third in the English Premier League, just 6 points behind the leaders Chelsea. They are also considered, financially at least, one of the best run clubs in Europe. As for ” may belooking for a new Manager”, WOW that's some crystal ball you got there. Arsene Wenger is the 2nd most prolific Manager in the Premier League when it comes to trophies. Personally, I would love to see “Silent Sam” buy my beloved “Gunners”, he is considered a “genuine” sports fan by many, including myself.

    Gunners for ever.

  • JoeDoGG

    EXACTLY

  • JoeDoGG

No way it was either Kemp or that Jordan dunk. KJ's was ok, even the Carter dunk was better then that trash dunk

  • JoeDoGG

    Agreed

  • eCurmudgeon

    Not Los Angeles: Mexico City.

  • JoeDoGG

Yeah step up on Kroenke Sports Enterprises a do the deal then we wont be owned by some sand you know what. Racist yes maybe but come on Stan make it happen.

  • steeplebomb

Wouldn't a team in better shape be worth more? I think a better explanation is the possibility of a lockout year after next.

I've been talking about this for months. makes perfect sense. See my Facebook group “Kroenke buy the Broncos”
