State of the Franchise

News and notes from Denver’s weekly press release. View the full release here (.pdf).

Looking to secure the 18th playoff berth in franchise history, the Denver Broncos (8-7) host the Kansas City Chiefs (3-12) this week in their regular-season finale. Kickoff at INVESCO Field at Mile High is set for 2:15 p.m. MST, and the game will be televised by CBS with Dick Enberg and Dan Fouts calling the action.

QUICKLY:

  • There are more than 10 different scenarios in which the Broncos can qualify for the postseason as a Wild Card team based on the outcomes of this weekend’s games.
  • Denver, which is entering its regular-season finale with a record above .500 for the ninth time in the last 10 years, has won four of its last five games against the Chiefs. In their first meeting against the Chiefs this year (Dec. 6), the Broncos won by a 44-13 margin at Arrowhead Stadium.

OFFENSE:

  • Denver has turned the ball over once or fewer in 10-of-15 games and is tied for fifth in the league for fewest giveaways (20).
  • With 101 receptions this year, WR Brandon Marshall became the fifth player in NFL history with three consecutive 100-catch seasons.
  • QB Kyle Orton’s 10 games with at least a 90.0 passer rating tie for the most in club history for a season (John Elway, 1997) and tie for third in the league this year.

DEFENSE:

  • OLB/DE Elvis Dumervil registered two sacks last week at Philadelphia that increased his sack total to a club single-season record 17. He leads the NFL in sacks and is looking to become Denver’s first-ever league sack champ.
  • The Broncos rank among the NFL leaders in several defensive categories, including yards per play (2nd, 4.8), yards per game (5th, 301.1), passing yards per game (2nd, 184.9) and sacks (T-6th, 39).

  • CB Champ Bailey posted his 46th career interception last week against the Eagles, and that total leads all NFL cornerbacks (T-2nd among all players) since he entered the league in 1999.

SPECIAL TEAMS:

  • K Matt Prater is tied for the AFC lead in field goals (29) while tying for fifth in the league in points scored (116). He has made 17-of-18 (94.4%) of his field goal attempts since November (4th best percentage in NFL).
  • OLB/DE Darrell Reid, who is tied for second on the team with 10 special- teams tackles, forced a fumble on a kickoff return against the Eagles last week that led to a Broncos touchdown on the ensuing drive.

*Sigh* I enjoyed this writeup a lot, but…

    “yes(1) the broncos(2) loose(3) this week.(4)Rumore(5) has it Orten(6) is gone.,(7)”

How does somebody have 7 grammatical errors in a sentence with only 12 words in it? That's so overwhelmingly stupid I'm in awe. If brains were dynamite, you wouldn't have enough to blow your nose.

This mess is not on Orton. Check the stats if you want to know about a player's effectiveness. They guy is middle to top-middle of all QB's in the league across the board. All of that with no running game, a leaky line, and a brand new system. If he gets run out, the organization is a bigger mess than I already suspect it might be.

Comments on Orton 1: don't blame Orton – why not fans blamed Cutler when Denver had no defense (well they had one but it was last in the NFL) 2: Denver offense has no long ball threat so they can't air it out to spread the field (Bronco spreading of filed consists of runs after catch)3 I still ownder what would have happened if Cutler had stayed despite the classless act of your new coach when he camne on board by stripping the club of the only effectiveness it had (the offense) I will give him this he did build a defense but then again that was all that Denver needed well that and a running back but were still waitiing for that.

Tell you what I don't understand – why do people still feed the trolls?

“Denver offense has no long ball threat so they can't air it out to spread the field …” While this is true, I think it should be put more on the O-line than on Orton. You won't have much of a long ball if the O-line doesn't give you time to find and throw the ball to your receivers downfield. You also won't have a very effective running game if the O-line doesn't block and create holes for runners to run through.

The primary criticisms (other than about attitude) I recall about Cutler are his propensity to throw interceptions in critical situations, and the Cutler-led offense's inability to score in the red-zone. Their's been equally as much criticism for lack of red-zone scoring directed at the Orton-led offense this year.

At any rate, Cutler and Shanahan are gone. It's long past time to move on.

For the English majors, I meant to say “There's been equally …”

Anything you say that compliments the Broncos, Orton and McDaniels in particular, feeds the trolls.

I've never watch a game this season where Kyle Orton didn't had “all day t o throw” I've in so many situation where he made the easier throw than to sling the ball down field. It's like having your favorite route to go home that is short and take less time. Then your wife drives you home and she takes another way that takes more time and is longer. In situations like that you just don't blame the car. Its the person behind the wheel. Kyle Orton was given a O Line that given up 12 sacks with Jay Cutler. Not the same with him because of his mobility and he likes taking sacks I'd suppose.
