It’s that time of year again, folks: time to take our weekly look at how the AFC and Denver Broncos playoff picture is shaping up. Here are how the teams rank if the season ended today, with notes on what’s to come.
(Seed, team, record, AFC record)
First Round Bye
1. Indianapolis Colts (12-0, 8-0)
2. San Diego Chargers (9-3, 7-3)
Division Winners
3. Cincinnati Bengals (9-3, 6-3)
4. New England Patriots (7-5, 5-4)
Wild Card
5. Denver Broncos (8-4, 6-3)
6. Jacksonville Jaguars (7-5, 6-2)
On the cusp
Baltimore Ravens (6-6, 6-4)
New York Jets (6-6, 5-5)
If the season ended today…
The Broncos would travel to New England to face the Patriots. The Broncos defeated the Patriots at home in Week 5, 20-17 in overtime.
Colts can clinch against Denver
The Indianapolis Colts can clinch the AFC’s top seed and home-field advantage throughout the playoffs with a win against Denver this weekend. Indianapolis is going for an NFL-record 22nd straight regular season victory.
Chargers can clinch playoff spot
Only one win separates the Chargers and Broncos in the AFC West race, but the Chargers can clinch a playoff spot (division winner or wild card) this weekend with a win and myriad of losses between Pittsburgh, Baltimore, and a few others (there are four scenarios in all, each involving a Chargers win with losses by at least four teams).
Bottom Line
According to AccuScore.com, the Broncos have a 76.0% chance of making the playoffs in 2009.
