Part of the fallout resulting from the Broncos‘ decision to fire Mike Shanahan in December is the tumult of rumors regarding where he’ll end up next.
The Washington Redskins‘ sluggish start has only expedited the rumor-process, the latest being that owner Dan Syner offered Shanahan the coaching job outright, and Shanny refused. From NFL FanHouse —
“Shanahan told the franchise there was little he could do in the middle of the season for them and that changing coaches during the season in the NFL rarely works,” a Redskins management source said. “Several people that Dan Snyder trusts have suggested, if he makes a move, he should turn it over to secondary coach Jerry Gray. That could still happen.”
Of course, Shanahan is right. Joining a team in the middle of the season would be a mess for both the team and the coach.
One wonders if the Redskins offer the type of job Shanahan would want at all, anyway. Snyder hardly represents the laissez-faire owner Pat Bowlen is, and the two-time Super Bowl winner will likely insist on being Coach-and-GM again, humbling-firing-be-damned.
While McDaniels‘ recent success may be clouding the luster on Shanahan’s championship career, something tells me the Mastermind will be back with a vengeance for some team in 2010.
Just not Washington.
