Brandon Marshall

The rest of the world moves forward with time.  Brandon Marshall is stuck in reverse.

Rather than bite the bullet, answer questions about his return to the team and get his NFL-mandated presser over with, Marshall continued to make headlines with his rebellious behavior.

This time, he wasn’t punting footballs; he was kicking aside the media’s questions.

As Frank Schwab of the Colorado Springs Gazette transcribes:

So, Brandon, did you have any making up to do with your teammates upon your return?

“This week, in preparing for Cleveland, it’s going to be tough and we know that,” Marshall said. “We’re going to do our best to give it our best shot.”

So how close are you to being back to your Pro Bowl form?

“I think Coach (Eric) Mangini is doing a great job with the guys, getting them to do what they’re supposed to do, doing their job, and it’s making it tough on opposing offenses,” Marshall said.

The only time Marshall spoke directly to a question was when he said he was completely healthy. Marshall had hip surgery in the offseason and missed a couple of weeks of training camp with a hamstring injury.

“I think I was 100 percent a long time ago,” Marshall said.

After a public relations staffer announced that there was one more question before the locker room was closed, Marshall decided he didn’t have time for another answer.

“All right,” Marshall said, walking away after the question was done.

As you can see, Marshall refused to address the reporters’ questions in his two-minute interview, instead choosing to recite the company line about the Cleveland Browns.

CBS4’s Gary Miller called him out on it, and according to colleague Vic Lombardi, things “got lippy.” Later, per Miller’s request, Lombardi clarified, saying the discussion was contentious/awkward.

Schwab adds, “Here’s the thing – when guys don’t talk to media, it cuts off fans’ access to them too. Also, it means your teammates have to answer more.”

It also keeps Marshall in this never-ending cycle of controversy.

Brandon Marshall just doesn’t get it. If he’s going to start playing the part of the “good soldier,” as we have been led to believe since his suspension weeks ago, it needs to happen wholeheartedly and completely, not just on the football field.

What, Brandon, are the Broncos more likely to give you your big shiny contract now? Now, after you left them the media mess to clean up, along with the egg on their face?

Brandon Marshall is the stubborn child who refuses to eat his vegetables before getting dessert. He’ll eat them, but he’ll piss and moan and throw a fit and make sure you understand with perfect clarity he’s only doing this for that ice cream.

Grow up, Brandon.

Whoa, wait a minute! Sharpe had done it before, many have done it before, instead of going over a touchy subject that is being dealt with behind closed doors “let’s talk about the next game, football, what happened on the field, etc.” The reporters did not get it and kept asking about something that Brandon is (gulp) very smart in not addressing. I won’t say he has grown up, or turned over a new leaf, however, he is listening to Sharpe and Rod Smith and letting his play do the talking instead of his agent who would rather play this out in the media. That being said, if he does have a 10 catch 150 yard game expect to hear some of his usual stupidity seeping out in his comments. This specific time though I feel you are incorrect in your comments.

  • Gary in SD

Personally, I’m more interested in how he conducts himself on the field. If he produces well for the team this season, then the rest of this crap is inconsequential as far as I’m concerned.

Meh, this is nothing. Maybe I’m just used to the British Press who try and trap anyone and get them to say anything and then turn it around and make it sounds like they’ve said they’re going to eat someone’s baby. But to me Marshall sounds like he’s just scared of saying the wrong thing.

I think ignoring the questions was the only way to make sure that a) he didn’t get mis-quoted in the media and b) avoiding the fine from the NFL for not talking to the media.

Best bet – next week, sit him down with Jeff Legwold – I don’t think there’s any chance of any malice and we may actually get some decent insight.

  • Jeremy

I understand that you want to get paid, but why would you want to alienate your fans? Brandon at one time was my favorite player to watch. I wish he would grow up.

  • TJ

Who gives a shit if he doesn’t talk to the media? These reporters are nothing more than a bunch of vultures and will do anything to tarnish someones image as long as it means better ratings for the media outlets. He didn’t say or do anything negative and these fucking parasites still launch a smear campaign!?!? No wonder he said he hates Denver. I would too! Take no guff from these swine , Brandon. Let your playing do the talking. GO BRONCOS!!

  • troyn

wow, i can’t believe so many are defending him here. he basically stunk it up on the field on sunday, and now once again he acts like a petulant little child. it seems simple to me, if you want a new contract or a team to want you, go out work your butt off, toe the company line and perform on the field. you do that and good things will happen. the press didn’t ask anything close to being out of line so there is no reason not to answer “their” questions, not the ones you have in your head.

  • max

The media made him look like an idiot for not talking about the team, he was suspended and when he came back forced to talk to the media and he knew every comment would be turned around to look bad. He quoted team principles and talked about his teammates not about I need to do this. Frankly how often did McDaniels sidestep questions with lower leg, lower leg, lower leg, I am not going to answer that specifically.

Frankly if I was McDaniels I think I would have said your part this year is to perform on the field from now on. And speak about team when questioned, they are going to crucify you anyway for a story. Don’t say anything negative. I think the media looked like a 1 track mind, who are having trouble with a story. How can you make a story about you played lousy but won. Everyone said they would lose, and McDaniels easily sidestepped the trap by saying we played bad but well enough to have a chance at the end. This is part of his strategy. I think even Marshall is starting to show the proper attitude, Rod Smith never had the controversy about what he said, but Shannon Sharpe did, and I think his advice might have made more of an impression than anyone.

I will wait to see if he performs, but they have not given him a new contract so if all he does is take the heat from the media, then less heat will be brought against the rest the team.

In his defense… After acting like that I wouldn’t want people asking me to keep relive it. Look how far talking has gotten him. Nowhere. Still he needs to grow up.

  • http://broncotalk.net Ian Henson

I’ve taken parts in interviews with Rod Smith before in the locker room, he was much worse than this. This was circa 2001 just for full disclosure.

  • roshon2411

Who cares…know if he continue’s to play the way he did last Sunday. Then we’ll have a problem.

  • roshon2411

  • bw53

Well I’m gonna hold my judgment until Kerry shows up and tells me how I should feel about it, so that I won’t just be a kool-aid drinking bronco fan.

  • herc rock

Childish, but pretty funny. I like the move.

  • robtink242

i have no problem with Marshall’s response. be real it was by the media he got most of his heat. the media was the catalyst to most of his off season hype. Marshall will talk to the media when good and ready.

  • kerry

yeah he deflected questions. so what? does anyone here really wanna hear what this clown has to say? is anyone here gonna lose sleep because he didnt answer questions the way all of you think he should. i mean im not defending the guy, but merely stating: WHO GIVES A SHIT WHAT THIS GUY THINKS. he clearly has NO desire to play for this team. and if anyone actually paid attention like i did then his body language on the field was evidence that he didnt wanna give a complete effort and didnt even wanna be on the field. which shows he doesnt give a shit about this team. so i ask again? who really gives shit??

  • areferee

BM has been, is and will always be the perfect example of the more famous acronym his initials imply. No wonder he continues to stink it up around here. Get used to it. He’ll never change…even when he is traded to Philly, Dallas or Buffalo like his hero. It can’t happen too soon.

  • postalmoose

Fellas it does matter. I get that the media can be vultures but does he or anyone else think that if he goes somewhere else that the tough questions won’t get asked? Of course they will! It doesn’t matter if it is Green Bay or New York City. His attitude off the field is as important as on the field and the guy that says above “that you only care what he does on the field” , well this incident shows is that this guys doesn’t get it and if you watched the game he dropped passes, ran poor routes and generally played listless. Just like a bad attitude at home affects your attitude at work it goes the same way with pro athletes. He is a bum and deserves to be traded and let someone else worry about his crybaby , immature attitude. I will bet before the season is over he gets suspended by the team for detrimental conduct. See ya Brandon!

  • Steeplebomb

But it isn’t that simple. What would you say is the bare minimum we can get back? I’d rather not trade him if we don’t get decent value. I wouldn’t do it for less than a 1st or a 2nd and a 3rd in return, which may be more than teams are willing to offer. The video of him punting balls really pissed me off but I think he’s trying to turn it around. Look at it from his perspective: what does playing poorly do to his value as a player? It drags it down. A lot. I think its clear that, for him, its all about the money and dropped passes = less money.

  • http://cdn0.sbnation.com/profile_images/111140/La_La_Mascot.jpg WhidbeyBronco

Screw the media! Really? Meltdown? Give me a break. Sounds like half a dozen other players or coaches I can think of who don’t want to answer a question directly.

What I care about is that he got the 1st team practice this week …and the playbook study time this week …so he makes it on the field on third down this week!!!

Then we see how he plays. As TJ sez, Brandodn let your playing do the talking. Don’t know if we can get you the ball…. but that’s another issue.

  • Jeremy

TJ, Brandon has let his play speak for him. A deep ball going right through his hands, and a dropped first pass of the game says it all. Maybe he should have been practicing when he was at practice instead of hitting balls away and making an ass out of himself.

  • anthony33

I could care less if he dosen’t talk to the media. I do care how he plays on Sunday and he stunk it up this past week.

I suspect his trade value continues to drop.

Live in So Cal and heard a great interview today with Junior Seau. The man loves Billechik(sp), says he is by far the best coach he has ever played for, and talked in depth about the Pats culture of team and standing together as a franchise and checking ego’s at the door. Very cool stuff. Starting to understand more and more what McD is trying to do. It’s not all about X”s and O’s boy’s, not even close.

BM clearly is not happy and does not understand the meaning, or want to understand the meaning of, this ‘team first’ concept, where you have to check your ego at the door and adapt to that culture and what it means.

  • flbronc

his trade value is about 2 helmets and a half a dozen uninflated footballs. ship him to whoever wants him.

  • rcsodak

Just saw it replayed on NFLN. He doesn’t have the slightest clue on what the ‘script’ is, and struggled. I’d give him a C for effort.

  • NM Bronco

It is always amusing when the media throws a temper tantrum when players don’t answer their questions.

Kyle, this is our first disagreement, but perhaps it is the media that needs to grow up.

  • TJ

Jeremy, I wasn’t trying to defend the way B-Marsh played last Sunday. That was quite obvious. I was just trying to point out the fact that the media in general (especially the Denver media) would be content to smear anyone’s image as long as people are logging on or buying their newspapers. It’s pretty obvious that the majority of sports fans gladly lap up any and all of the diarrhea spewed from the mouths of these so called journalists. People at the DP such as Lindsay Jones and Mark Kiszla make a living out of generating nothing but negative publicity for professional athletes and it’s just lazy journalism IMO. Guys like Bill Williamson @ ESPN.com and formerly the Denver Post are lazy hacks at best and they do nothing more than repeat what someone else has already writen. I could do HIS job! I can copy and paste too! WOW! I’m a sports journalist now! YEAH!!

  • http://broncotalk.net Kyle

I hear you NM and everybody, and you know I was on your side of the fence a few weeks ago when everyone was dogging BMarsh.

But jeebus enough is enough!! (my opinion). How hard is it to say “Next question” or “No comment” and NOT walk away from the podium at the end?

  • ThePrairiePrankster

The only meltdown was the media simpletons who need controversy to get their audience whipped into a frenzy since they clearly do not have enough talent to hold our interest otherwise. I hope the Broncos win and that B-Marsh has a great game.

  • Ed

Fine. Let your play talk. Just stop dropping passes.

  • Brian

All I see is Marshall fielding questions like passes, he only cooperates when its to his liking. This bum, yeah bum looked non schalant as hell last game. It was like watching someone not willing to try, he had better change his tune against the Browns. That half assed effort he gave against the Bengals only showed this guy is a spoiled little girl. I’ll sing praises to Marshall if he deserves this but from what I saw last wek, he is wasted skin taking up a roster spot. Brandon needs to get his stuff together and show he wants to play.

  • broncotalk

Testing new comments system. Again. :)
