HELL SCHEDULE
The Broncos picked an inopportune time to finish second in their division; on top of the variety of challenges the NFC East and AFC North will present, they get matched with annual powerhouses New England Patriots and Indianapolis Colts, who also finished second in their respective divisions.
And even the teams that one might designate “should-wins” – the first three against Cincinnati, Cleveland and Oakland – are by no means sure things. The Bengals are quietly building a force under the radar; I think they have a playoff berth in their future this season. The Browns gave the Broncos all they could handle last year, and the Raiders evened the series 1-1. You just can’t take any teams for granted in the NFL – each of these will be a decent challenge and a worthy foe.
I’m also concerned about the slippery slope involved with the locker room and this young first-year coach. If the team struggles out of the gate – which is entirely possible considering the huge overhaul we’ve experienced at nearly every position – he could lose his players. And the schedule only gets more difficult as the year goes on.
On the flip side, if the team succeeds early, it could have a snowball effect the other way. The early goings will set the tone for the rest of the season, and I’m sure McDaniels is as aware of this as anybody.
2009 outlook: On paper, this is the toughest schedule I can ever recall as a fan. A fast start will be absolutely crucial to weather the storm from weeks four through 13.
