San Diego Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman was taken into custody at 3:35 a.m. PDT Sunday morning after he reportedly “choked and physically restrained” reality TV star Tila “Tequila” Nguyen.
According to the report, Merriman was charged with battery and false imprisonment and remained in custody Sunday morning. Nguyen was taken to Pomerado Hospital for treatment.
Merriman has some history of league trouble, having been suspended four games in 2006 for steroid use. Merriman maintained he was a victim of “tainted supplements,” and has kept a clean off-field image otherwise.
Until now, that is.
Ironically, the Charger tweeted only two days ago that he would often like “to punch a bunch of guys,” but wouldn’t out of fear of suspension. Merriman was referring to the now-infamous LaGarrette Blount college football incident earlier this week.
Something tells me Merriman’s prediction on the consequences of off-field violence was dead-on.
UPDATE from PFT: Merriman is expected to make a public statement, saying he was trying to prevent Nguyen from drinking while intoxicated. Obviously no one can fault the LB for his motives, and we’re not going to comment whether he took things too far, because we just don’t know. Just like we insisted on letting Brandon Marshall have his day in court, we should afford Merriman the same.
