Ok, I made this comment in connection with the ongoing Cutler Bowl debate, but I think it’s a big enough topic to separate it out from the talk of last nights game.

I truly think that the entire Cutler discussion is distracting us from the real issue…

Here is what I think our problem is:

Bronco fans are more motivated by the hatred of an ex-player than they are motivated by the passion and excitement of the current players/coaches on the team.

There as been no play from any of our new players or units that has brought the stadium to it’s feet like we saw last night. And I think that means it’s a question regarding identity. What defines this new Bronco team?

It could be the Defense – the Orange Crush was our identity back in the day. Elway’s scrappy comeback-kid performances defined our identity early in his career and under Shanahan we became students of The Mastermind.

But who are we now? That’s what we need. We need our inspiration. We need a new hero.

So, fellow Bronco fans, what do you think? Am I way off base – do we have a crisis of identity or not? If so, who would you like to step up and become the new face of the Broncos? What unit or player can bring us a new and powerful identity that will not only excite the fans, but also inspire the whole team?

  • http://www.webmdreviews.com Robert

I think that is an excellent point. If McD can do what he is trying our new identity should be one of “team”. We had the identity of mastermind last but in reality what we had was a solid defense, 3 good receivers, a hall of fame qb, one of the best rb’s to play the game during his prime and a lot of veteran leadership. Shanahan simply put together a game plan that allowed his players to maximize their talents and let their veteran leadership do the rest.

If you look at our current team we have some good veteran leaders. We have some very good wr’s and te’s and that is not counting Marshall (hopefully he will be back soon).

I think everyone can agree our defense looks better than it did last year so that is certainly a step in the right direction. We have solid depth at RB, especially with Hillis and Moreno.

Orton is a serviceable QB for the next year or two and while Brandstater may never develop into a starting QB, he certainly showed he has some promise.

If our motto is “team”.. we are well on our way.

    Jonathan,

I think your right. I’ve watched more preseason games this year than any year before. I watch from the first snap to the last. However, I don’t watch to see how good we’ll be, like years past. This year, I watch more for the reality tv aspect of the Broncos. It’s sad, I root for the Broncos but feel as if i’m just waiting for Orton or the defense to make a mistake. I have no confidence in this team, staff, or quite frankly the organization. For the first time in 20+ years of following the Broncos, I don’t have any expectations of the playoffs. Watching Marc Sanchez, lead the Jets, i’m wondering if we missed the opportunity to jump up and get him. If we had a Sanchez, would we be as upset. To me i didn’t think Sanchez would be the right fit and wouldn’t be worth it, but I also didn’t think Denver would have taken an Offensive player either. But I feel there would be less of a divide among fans if we were following a QB with more upside and give a little more hope than Orton. Orton’s a one year band-aid, but I want something to stop the bleeding, not delay it!

  • roshon2411

Also, other news… Travis Johnson is now a Charger.

the broncs need to make a play for Derek Anderson and some one needs to let that kid of a coach know.

  • http://ttmt.com T-Money

I think that alot of our identiy fell through the cracks when Bolwen made the Cutler trade. I hate saying that because I’s sick of it but it’s true. When you loose your head coach you are saddened but you know you have the players (and the #2 offense) that still going to make things work. And when Pat jumped the gun on Cutler he lost a lot of dignity and respect from the players around the league, the media, and most improtanly the fans. I for one look at the Broncos as less of an organization than I did after the Shannahan firering.

Will we get it back anytime soon? Probably in a few years. Where will it come from? Defense? Players? Coaches? Who knows. What I do know is that we’re not as bad as people think. Maybe we’ll sneak out of this one like the 2005 Baltimore Ravens.

I also know that I’m freaking pumped for the season and that I’m gearing up every Sunday to watch the kick ass. If the lose, so be it. There are 32 teams in the NFL and every year there are different surprises. Furthermore only two of those teams go the the super bowl and one one walks out alive.

  • Kent R. Sawatzky

I agree. I believe after what I saw last night that a tough ass kicking defense will be the identity until the offense gets in gear which may b a good chunk of the season. But I think the real Identity will be that of a rebuilding franchise period! It is ok to say it everyone, rebuilding, say it again and take a deep breath.

  • JohnBronco

Patriots might model themselves after “team”, but c’mon, they have Brady, Moss, Bruschi (had) on and on. So sure, it’s all fine and good to have a team mentality, but you need some stars to make plays to win. It’s the NFL, not high school. Looking at our roster, if we lose Marshall, I see only one pro-bowler on our team…Champ. Dawkins maybe, but he is long in the tooth.

We are a team of completely average players and our play this preseason has shown that. It’s going to be a long year.

“but you know you have the players (and the #2 offense)”

I don’t understand why people keep saying that. It is so far from reality. Our offense was bad last year. The #2 ranking is based SOLEY on yards gained. Period end of story.

We were outscored by 15 other teams and 5 others were withing 10 points. Our offense was bad last year. Every single measurable statistic other than yards gained was poor. When you are not in the top 15 in points scored, it isn’t the #2 ranked offense. When you are ranked in the bottom 10 in the red zone you are not the #2 ranked offense.

To call last years offense above average would be a gross exaggeration and anyone who says otherwise is either refusing to acknowledge the facts or wants something to complain about this year.

  • http://www.search-this.com mark

    “In Search of an Identity”!
how about In Search of a QB
    or
In Search of a Pro Bowl WR
    or
    In Search of a Defense…

  • magster

The identity will come with winning — except we won’t win. It’s going to be weird watching this year’s version of the Broncos (or not watching if the Broncos are going to be as bad as they’ve been this pre-season). This could be like that 2-7 strike shortened season back in the early 80s

  • roshon2411

Our offense was not bad last year. Just our red zone offense. Cutler didn’t have a great year in the red zone 17 td’s to 4 picks but the year before he had 16 td’s and 0 int’s. So he can be productive in the red zone. Our red zone difficulties stem from not being able to punch it in running the ball. A different running back every week didn’t help, and our line is overrated in run blocking. Our scoring average was 23.1 pts/game, but we were only 5.8 pts more from being the #1 team. Two FG’s and they would have been #1. Not that it would have mattered b/c we didn’t lose a game last year by less than 6 pts anyhow. The reason we were 8-8 last year was b/c of the Defense, plain and simple.

The parts were there and Josh was hired to put them together to improve in the areas that needed work. Denver was the dream job during the off-season because of that… and now were considered to be rebuilding? Alot of people messed up and now the fans are going to pay for it.

  • Joe H.

Mark, the defense is already improved over the last 2 years. It’s the offense that that really needs to get an identity. I hoping that they are just being conservative in the preaseason and not wanting to show what their offense is going to look like during the season. If our offense is going to be like last night I hate to admit this but we could be in for a long year!! I don’t remember Orton ever throwing or even lookind downfield. This dink and dunk stuff can’t happen all game you got to be able to throw downfield. If Orton can’t do it then we need to look elsewhere. Maybe that O’Connell kid from New England. I know another ex-Patriot but he should know the system. And we need to draft one of the QB’s next year. Bradford would probably be to expensive but maybe McCoy would be within reach for us. Unfortunately we traded our own 1st rd pick next year but we need to do whatever it takes to get another franchise QB here. Regardless of what happens the Broncos will be my team!! GO BRONCOS!!!!!

  • http://www.broncotalk.net Jonathan Douglas

magster, I don’t necessarily agree that ‘with winning will come the identity.’

It could be argued that the identity comes first – then the winning follows.

We definitely need the ‘fire’ in our players and right now I just don’t see it. I can maybe see some good kindling with Dawkins out there now, but a man with one hand, can only do so much.

  • http://BroncoTalk.net Mr.East

    JD,

I know what you mean about this problem. I for one do not have it. I’m excited about this team not hating Cutler.

What the problem is that the season hasn’t started. Winning does create an identity, well more of a “hero” that you’re referring to. Elway was the identity of the team for the rest of it’s life because… two Super Bowls. Before then he was just a phenomenal QB who couldn’t win the big one.

Of course this team doesn’t have an “identity” if that’s what you want to call it. The team just got a new head coach who usually is a huge part of the “identity” and the team got a new QB another huge part of it.

Of course Cutler coming back brought the fans to their feet more than anything else. The defense could score 1,000 points in the first quarter and it still wouldn’t be as big as Cutler coming back.

What this team needs is for the season to start. When/if Denver starts winning games the reason why those games are won will decide who/what the “identity” or “hero” is.

  • bw53

To echo the immortal words of Jim Mora: “Playoffs? Playoffs?”

“Identity? Identity?” 70% of our guys are new. We haven’t won a game yet. There is no face of the franchise. There’s no crisis, as there is no identity.

We will only have an inkling about what this team is about midway into the season.

There is validity though that Cutler appeared to be our future and he jilted us like a first lover. But love comes around again eventually. So to help us wallow in our desperation I digress into a song: “Feelings, nothing more than feelings, trying to forget my feelings of love.”

  • http://ttmt.com T-Money

    Robert-

I’m just saying that we had something good and screwed the pooch. I agree that the offense was not what it was made out to be. I was simply making a point.

  • DocJolivette

I have to say I honestly do not have any hate for the players that chose -all be it not in the most sportsmen way, but more with the choices of Pat Bowlen and coaching changes. I truly think it all started with the loss of Elam. He WAS the Broncos. At that point I can say I lost some trust for Shanahan but not all. Then when Shanahan was fired, I lost faith in Bowlen as did all our well known Broncos. I too would be upset and not want to be a member of the team. Yes we had a great start with a horrible ending or last half of season, but look at our injury list. WE WERE ON OUR 8th STRING RUNNING BACK. If that was not enough we had many other starters out. So to fire a great coach, the only one to bring us a Super Bowl victory – TWICE, because of a bad season was by far a horrible decision. And if I were a Bronco, I too would no longer respect my boss. Yes Cutler is a bit too big headed already and didn’t help matters, but when you show you are a future top QB yet your new coach is looking for a new one, I too would be highly upset. No I am and will always be a die hard Bronco fan, I see many years of bad seasons and being at the bottom of the league. If any thing good comes from this is maybe ticket prices will drop. Sorry, I know this is a huge rant and rave, and many might not agree but with every new move I feel like I know the Broncos less and less. Honestly, in the end I hope I am WAY wrong and we can build a tram that can compete with the best, but I don’t think I am. Hopefully on of ya can say something to change y mind cause I love my Broncos but right now, I’m not too happy with them.

  • broncoNM

This team is too new to have a identity in place. New coach, new system, new players. Its the 3rd preseason game… it might take 12 weeks for this team to form. I understand that it was much easier to identify with the team when cutler was here. He was a gunslinger and win or lose it was fun to watch and not a bad way to see your ship sink. We were not that good last year but the potenial of cutler made a mediocre season seem OK. But there is still some great potenial on our team… Ill admit this could very well be Ortons only season as a bronco and we might have to find a new QB sooner than later but we have a young offensive guru coach that still has a lot to prove in this league… we got clady, hillis, moreno, royal, etc… Our team last year had a lot of holes to fill and i was only hoping to make the playoffs to give cutler some experience… Im hoping that even though we lost cutler we gained a defense… not a great defense but a good defense. Than its up to McD to find a QB that can handle his system. For now i think this teams identity for most of the season will be ‘underdog’.

  • Bryan

How is this a “rebuilding” year? It went from a coaches dream job to a rebuilding year just because of Cutler? I agree that pulling the trigger on Jay wasn’t the greatest idea, especially so early in his career, but last years team was terrible! The defense was the reason why we blew it. Cutler did his job to the best of his ability, but the remainder of the team did nothing! I liked Shanny but he needed to go because whatever once worked for him, no longer did. I know when something in my house breaks, I go and get a new one and then get accustomed to it. That’s what Bowlen did. This team lost one great PLAYER in Cutler, but IMHO we took a step in the right direction as a TEAM!

  • Bryan

You guys act like Shanny had one bad season..in the decade plus he coached he only had 3, at tops 4, good ones! And 2 of those were 11 and 12 years ago!

  • Wyrob

Jonathan, you are absolutely right…the identity is lost. We’re still obsessing about qb arm strength like we did when Elway was the team.

  • roshon2411

It might have been Shanny’s time to go, but he still was sucessful w/o Elway. In the 10 years after, he had 10+ wins in a season 4 times. Made a AFC championship game with Jake Plummer starting. Was 91-69. Essentially 9-7 record. Not to mention what would his record had been if Terell Davis doesn’t get injured by a freak play. Only had one win in the playoffs but it was against the Pats. One of the few to do that this decade. The AFC was dominated by three teams in this decade. Pats, Colts and Steelers and all three have franchise QB’s. Even with going through QB’s like Griese and Plummer, Denver has the 5th best record this decade behind the Pats 101 Wins, Colts 100, Steelers 94, Eagles 92, and Denver 85 wins. Shanny was still a good coach and my money is on him getting to the playoffs again before McDaniels.

It was a bad move going with an offensive minded coach.

It didn’t go from a dream job to a rebuilding year just b/c of Cutler. But a person touching the ball every play, plays a big factor. But so does new offense, new defense and a roster being changed by more than 50%.

  • nycdonkey

I’m one of the folks who got sick watching us lose last year, and JC as a hero is nice, but but jeez, I couldn’t even watch the end . I literally went on vacation before the last SD game b/c I just kind of knew we were going to fold; and the prospect that maybe JC would throw for 600 yards or something wasn’t enough to make me watch (not that he did that either)

This article is dead on – let’s just get out and start the season and we’lll find things to like and hate. McDaniels has one thing going for him – expectation are way low, I say take the Broncos on the spread in the first couple weeks, we will be way oversold I have a feeling.

Here’ si what I would root for; If JMD can make them 1) play for PRIDE and 2) play with TOUGHNESS. I am probalby the only Bronco fan ou there who think Bmarsh was a freaking Pussy, never ran in a straight line and knocked people over, and he clearly does not play for pride. JC? Proud, but definitely not tough. All those guys, I will miss their numbers and their excitement, but good riddance.

Peyton Hills – I hate white-boy RBs with no moves: but damn, proud and tough. Buckhalter; 3 torn up knees, running like a man, proud. tough. Eddie Royal – well, kinda a shrimp, but pretty tough. Dawkins, Bailey, c’mon, obvious. Oline, natch. You look at it, and most of the folks on this new team I would be happier with at 8-8 then we were with the stud-crybaby QB and the mercenary-pussy WR.

I do however agree with folks that suggest that Orton looks a little Brian Greasy-like. Shudder.

  • broncoNM

Adam schefter reports that both orton and cassel should be ready for the season opener. Still curious to see if KC or Den takes a shot at Kevin O’Connell? I dont think Orton has played horrible but he has not impressed enough to pass on a guy that knows the system and may have a stronger arm. I think knowledge of the system is huge and i would not be opposed to bringing in O’Connell.

  • AtomicLeo

    JD –

Great post. But I don’t think this is a problem that appeared after Shanhan and Cutler were shown the door. This has been a problem since the Big Guy left.

Look at the banner on this web site. How many players are players on the current roster? Darn few. I see Ed McCaffrey, Terrell Davis, Elway, players from the late 1990’s Super Bowl run. We root for the team but we are also human and we want to be emotionally vested in a player or players on the field. In football, those players are usually offensive skill players or defensive position players that impact every snap of the ball like a great pass rusher or a great middle linebacker. As much as I love Champ, it’s hard to root for the guy every play when most of the time he doesn’t even get the ball thrown his way. If you look at the players at those positions: QB, RB, WR, DE and MLB, for the Broncos from the past decade they are all average players, draft busts or no longer with the team today.

The lack of stars at these positions point to a much deeper problem. The team has had no direction since the Super bowl wins other than we-are-just-one-or-two-players-away-from-a-championship. Shanhan fostered this mentality and Bpwlen enabled it up until the moment he fired Mike in January. But Bowlen didn’t fix this issue when he hired McDaniels.

McDaniels had points on his resume that hinted at a great head coach prospect, but he didn’t have anything in his background that implied he was ready to run an NFL franchise. And that is what REALLY bugs me about the past 9 months, there doesn’t seem to be a plan.

I mean, I know, the idea was he was going to bring in this great offensive system and light up the scoreboard but do any of the moves in the off-season look like an organized effort to build that offensive unit? It seems like every move is a knee-jerk reaction to an immediate crisis.

I think the biggest mistake Bowlen made was not taking the time after firing Shanahan to decide what direction he wanted the franchise to go. He did not honestly evaluate where the team was and what needed to be done. I think if he had done that, instead of running out and hiring the youngest Mike clone he could find, he would see that most successful franchises in today’s NFL have a strong GM/VP that implements the team’s vision and a head coach that coaches. Period. The dual GM/Coach model doesn’t work. The only two teams I can think of where this approach works now is the Patriots and the Cowboys when Parcells was in charge. Well Parcells is now the VP in Miami and away from the sidelines and we’ll see how much Poili departure for KC will impact the Patriots.

So JD I think until Bowlen realizes that the coach can not do it all and needs a well-structured organization to succeed, I think the Broncos will continue to flail around looking for an identity.

  • coskibum

Hi everyone, I’m new to posting here but, have read with much enthusiasm about what has happened with our Broncos for some time on this great site.

Let me begin with I’m not the sharpest tool in the shed but, “Mama” didn’t raise no fool either… That said here is my take on our “Identity Issue”.

First off, I can’t believe the booing last night directed at Jay Cutler. In my humble opinion it is the fan’s frustration at losing a gifted quarterback who was the face of our franchise. One who I envisioned would retire a Bronco. The fans in the staduim really had envy of what we let slip through our hands. The proper target of the booing falls squarely on Mr Bowlen shoulders. Through mismanagement of this transition of head coaches, Mr Bowlen clearly has let down not only the fans but, the players and everyone who lives in Colorado. Less we forget who really funded the new Mile High Stadium, the tax payers of the State of Colorado! Mr Bowlen wrote a letter to the fans in the Denver Post this past April stating that he had no choice but to trade Jay Cutler because he would not return phone calls. He could have just as easily made Jay show up to camps or suspended him, just like Brandon. Instead he made the decision to trade Cutler. He made the call to let Shannhan run the entire football side of the Broncos. I will give Shanny his do as a great offensive mind but, his drafting and defensive management choices were sub par at best. Mr Bowlen should have stepped in long ago and brought in a real general manager with drafting skills. This failure along with hiring a very young, green coach in McDaniel’s, demonstrates another clear lack of management and leadership skills. For all of us who have ever worked for a large corporation, those in upper and middle management are usually the most clueless and last to realize what’s really going on. Mr Bowlen should have stepped in the moment things started going south with Cutler and straighten it out. Instead he let McDaniel run rough shot over a 25 year gifted quarterback. He let McDaniel’s ego or maybe a better term is “East Coast Attitude” push a pro-bowl quarterback out the door. He let two kids both with big egos, duke it out. Who loss, everyone in Bronco Nation. We have now joined the ranks of the Lion’s, the Ram’s, the Bill’s and Ohio’s gang.

I still bleed Blue and Orange but reality has begun to sink in. Our new “Identity” is one of a bottom feeder.

  • Bryan

    Roshon..

A lot of great stats! However one thing that all those teams had, outside of a franchise QB, that we didn’t:Great Defenses. We have had swiss cheese.
In Pittsburghs case, I don’t think it matters who they put at QB, their defense wins their games.

  • http://kellyleephipps.com Kelly in Carolina

I think Moreno is going to come on and carry the offense into an identity as long as he stays healthy. I hope he is at least practicing, cause we are going to need him bad.

I like Kevin O’Connel and think he’d be a great addition, but hey Tom Brandstater looked good last night behind a line that blocks, so maybe he’ll emerge into another Tom Brady-ish QB…his throws are tight and he can zip it deep unlike Kyle Orton.

I think we start off with a Defensive Orange Crush identity, with a powerful running game and an occasional and growing electrifying dink and dunk passing game. Orton seems way to uncertain and shaky. It’s sad when a rookie like Brandstater looks more confident than he does.

I think I’m going to order two jerseys this year Dawkins, just for the history of it and McKinley cause I like #11 and he looks like he’ll replace childish Marshall nicely!

  • broncobobmeridian

Question: Has anyone of you gone to the open practices, and watched if Orton or any of the other QB’s worked on throwing deep balls? In all 3 preseason games, both backups have thrown deeper routes then Orton. Does anyone think that coach McD doesnt want to show much of the play book in these preseason games?

  • roshon2411

    Bryan,

Without a great defense, Shanny still had the 5th best record. The Colts D blew. They had one great player in Freeney, and a good one in Sanders, when he’s actually on the field. Shannahan made moves as a GM to make this D better. He traded Clinton Portis for Champ Bailey. He traded George Foster and Tatum Bell for Dre Bly. He brought in defensive guys like Ray Rhodes, Jim Bates, and Larry Coyer. Who were as hyped defensively as McDaniels was offensively. I’ll give you Bob Slowik was a bad hire. But he made efforts to fix the defense. I don’t recall a defensive player/coach who was available that he passed on.

As for your Pittsburgh comment, Their defense was and is very good. But I recall their QB winning the Super Bowl this year and not their defense.

  • Jon Krause

Our identity used to be a totall running team, then came Travis Henry, who kinda killed that whole thing, then we became a Cutler-passing team, back in 05 we were a ‘D-run’ team. Now I also don’t know who we are? Not a running team, not a passing team? I don’t know what our ‘D’ will be like, I hope we can become a ’05 ‘D’ team again with Dawkins, Champ, D.J., and Elvis among others.

  • Mav_PM

Our Team is now the identity. It’s the whole point this season to rebuild our team in order to win. Not to identify the guy to make us win. Our team has stars (Royal, Hillis, Bailey, Doom, Dawkins, Knowshon and many more), guys we wish were stars but may never reach their potential, and the supporting cast that don’t always get recognition (OLine, DLine). The QB delivers the rock but then it’s up to the receiver to finish the play, maybe with help from the o-line making the screen or protecting the pocket. Up to the Running Back to find the hole created by the blockers. Aren’t we always pointing out to Chicago fans that Cutler can’t become much without some quality receivers on his TEAM?

We don’t necessarily want the same “identity” or “hero” player all season even though we’re used to that. We fans could become deeper creatures than that (we probably won’t). Maybe the excitement comes each week from watching for different playmakers to step up. Cannon-arm Cutler was the chosen hero for the last few seasons. The weight of each win and loss were on his shoulders. Most of us were united for 3 whole seasons to cheer and support Jay no matter what happened til the end (April 2nd). It sets up failure when the lone hero can’t force wins on his own and all the fans get dragged down. Sunday was only one game this year. It showed most of us were now united in reversing that support with that same 3-season intensity. It was a chance to prove we can win without Jay and for him to fail without us. It didn’t happen but games like that are fun anyways.

I cheered for sacks of Cutler last night. I may not watch another Bears game the rest of the year. Vaya con dios Cutler. Instead I’ll be focusing on my team as they make their way through this long season. Wins and success will fire up Broncos fans. I don’t know if we’ll get many this year. Hopefully it’ll get better as the team gets better then tack on an even better record next year.

    We are…BRONCOS!

  • Joe DoGG

I had a question Broncos Fans. Who thinks that Josh McDaniels should stop copying Bill Belichick with the whole hoodie wearing thing. He looks like a chump in a hoodie anybody would. Get your own style man. Quit trying to makes us New England I know we need change but come on. Were Not New England we are the DENVER BRONCOS. Besides I don’t know about you, but I never liked the patriots anyhow. Like every time we played them. The thing is Denver Broncos fans are true fans. We will still go to games and still route for the home team. I was at that Denver chicago game and I was hoping that people would be booing him as well. I almost hope we loose every game so that he gets straight kicked out of town and then we can get Sam Bradford or Tim Tebow and a new coach. Anyhow Go BRONCOS and hopefully good residence to Josh Mc Copypants

  • Stan

I have been a Bronco fan since the mid ’60s. What a shame that our 32 year old head coach’s NFL legacy will be that he was personally resposible for loosing a franchise Quarterback. All he had to do was tell Cutler he had two choices, play for the Broncos or retire from football. End of story. Instead we get Orton, and no hope for this season and probably next. I will be really disapointed if Josh lasts beyond mid season.
