Marshall

Denver Broncos wide receiver Brandon Marshall has been suspended for, “Conduct detrimental to the team.”

Adam Schefter is reporting via his twitter account that Marshall’s suspension will be for the remainder of the preseason and he may be available for the season opener.

The maximum suspension time allowable under the Collective Bargaining Agreement is four games. Marshall will not be able to appeal through the NFL, however, he would be able to appeal through a third party. As I pointed out in yesterday’s post I believe that Marshall will have a hard time doing this as I have a feeling his lawyer may have ties to the Broncos. (Then again, I could be wrong, I’m not a lawyer).

More details to follow as they become available… Press release and poll after the jump.

If all we can get is a 4th rounder for him (probably a 6th now) and he keeps up this behavior I hope we keep him on the team and suspended for the next 2 years.

  • MiamiMike

It’s about time someone put Marshall in timeout. He once again has proven he has issues controlling his emotions. It’s just to bad he does not give up any pay for not being at camp in the preseason. he has hurt his team the fans and on a good point he hurt himself. Do not give into his childish behavior. It only shows Denver did the right thing by not reworking his contract. Marshall shows he cannot control his anger and it is only a matter of time before he blows up on or off the field again.

  • flbronc

talk about not having a choice… his actions from wednesday and the press it garnered, what else could we have done?

we could still probably nab a fourth for him, but i wouldnt do it personally. somebody would take a chance that he’s not going to totally implode i think. if someone coughed up a first rounder, i’d buy the plane ticket. he’s pretty much lost all of my support at this point.

  • http://broncotalk.net (dee)

    Robert

No, that would be the easy way out for him. The bigger punishment to let him sit and not be able to play the game he says he “loves”.

I dont think this has a very big impact on the team, because we’ve played all preseason and most of the training camp without him. Hopefully we can have a great season and if he falls make a decison on him at that time.

    *falls in line.

    About Time

  • http://broncotalk.net Ian Henson

At least he’ll have time to learn the playbook now.

  • Isaiah Kyler

Pretty tired of Marshall, he is a ticking time bomb … I have to wonder what ever happened to receivers who are like Rod Smith or Jerry Rice … Athletes with class!

  • Eric in Vegas

If Roy Williams does have a broken collarbone, the Cowboys will be calling…

  • http://broncotalk.net (dee)

    Ian

I second your notion, he has all the time in the world now to learn that playbook. Hopefully we’re something like 3-1 or 4-0 and he can come back, shutup, and play for us.

Yes I’m an optimist and I love the Broncos.

    Denver announces Marshall suspension

    August 28, 2009 10:56 AM

    Posted by ESPN.coms Bill Williamson

Schefter reported earlier Friday morning that Marshall has been suspended by the team for the rest of the preseason and that he could be reinstated in time for the Sept.13 season opener if he behavior improves.

  • http://broncotalk.net Ian Henson

    Dee-

Give me credit, I beat Williamson with that report =P

The Denver Broncos have suspended wide receiver Brandon Marshall for conduct detrimental to the club.

That’s fine and deserved, but what about Josh McDaniels’ conduct that has been detrimental to the club?

  • antonio

sure am glad we ‘upgraded’ our coaching staff in the offseason. it really wouldve sucked to be getting pro bowl production from our qb and wr1 spots this year.

not that im excusing either of the players’ behavior, but there is more to being a leader of men than having to resort to asserting one’s authority at the expense of the quality of the team.

bowlen and mcdaniels may leave these 2 fiascos with their egos unscathed, but the cost has been a significant reduction in talent from last year’s team to this one.

  • http://broncotalk.net Ian Henson

    mark-

Wait for the man to coach a regular season game, haha.

  • Isaiah Kyler

    Mark
McD has done nothing in any way that was detrimental to the team … his job is to improve a team that blew a 3 game lead last year. This same team also had one of the worst defenses in the NFL.

Give the guy a break, the regular season has not even started yet and we don’t even know what we are getting from this guy.

  • http://www.search-this.com mark

@Ian – I am… I liked McDaniels’ play calling thus far and he has a nice resume for sure. But one thing a resume never says is, “Doesn’t work well with others” or “Has no people skills.” People wont mind if you have no people skills if you win, but man if you lose, look out.

  • Gambino

Looks like a bunch of the McD hater trolls from the DP have found their way onto here. How does this have anything to do with McDaniels? Marshall hates this city and said so a long time ago when your boy Shanny was here. Get over it. Cutler and Shanny aren’t here. Quit living in the past(which barely produced any playoff wins anyways), and just accept the fact the dude hasn’t even coached a game yet. You call yourselves fans? I call you fair weather fans.

  • Gambino

Mark – How do you know he has “no people skills”? I guess his “people skills” are why he was able to sign Dawkins and bunch of other FA’s. Now you’re just reaching like all the other bitter Cutler lovers. “People skills” that really made me LOL.

  • http://cdn0.sbnation.com/profile_images/111140/La_La_Mascot.jpg WhidbeyBronco

Mark!!! Folks here have been having their Kool Aid delivered from MHR lately. Don’t blame them, it’s a disease.

    IAN
“Wait for the man to coach a regular season game, haha.”

Yeah, he’s done about everything wrong he can so far! Why don’t YOU wait before getting on his juevos?

Brandon is pissed because he deserves a payday and was promised a trade!! Anyone would be. Who here goes to work with folks all around them who make more and do much less …and likes it?

    Freaking duh!

    Go Broncos.

PS Hire J Garcia for the year!!
    lol

  • Pat

    what an idiot

  • http://www.search-this.com mark

@Gambino – Your post reek of assumption. I was actually happy to see Shanahan go. I do and did like Shanny, but it was time. I like the hire of McDaniels. I like his free agent acquisitions. I also didn’t mind his first 2 draft picks, after the first two I have questions. But hey it’s a crap-shoot anyways. But then he lies, to Cutler, to the media, and to the fans. I hate liars. I have no problem with him trying to trade for Cassell, but when it didn’t work he should have done some damage control. He didn’t. His response was tough, get over it Cutler, I am calling the shots. Which is his some response to Marshall. Do you realize that he and Marshall have not even spoken? For those of us that are married and have kids we know that nothing can get fixed without speaking. Nothing… So while Cutler and Marshall did some misbehaving of their own. Someone with good people skills can work through it. Manage it, for the sake of the team. Put ego aside and care about the person. Trust me, Tony Dungy would never have let this happen… So listen to me now and believe me later. McDaniels had better win or he will lose this team.

  • TD30isMVP

Brandon deserves a payday? So your employee is arrested multiple times, is suspended, lies about a stupid self-inflicted injury and talks bad about the company, but he when he isn’t injured or at court or suspended he plays very well…gosh that just screams give him more money!

  • http://broncotalk.net (dee)

    Ian –

I know you had the report of before, I was just pointing to the part of reinstatement that could happen by the opener.

    WB

Seriously? I thought you were smarter that that.

  • jbirchbronco

    Mark,

Your comment is ridiculous!! If you haven’t noticed McDaniels is not into this “Me” first attitude. If you don’t know what I’m talking about look more in depth into the Cutler situation and more recently Brandon Marshall. Shanahan drafted players that were talented, but with this attitude I’m talking about. If you’re not about the team, there’s the door and don’t let it hit you on the A$$ on the way. I for one am thinking the first little while may be rough, but if we can survive the first bumpiness, I feel the Bronx are headed in the right direction.

  • http://broncotalk.net Kyle

Right Whidbey, and I agree, Marshall has every right to be mad and upset. But as a professional I expect him to still go to work. I expect him NOT to be disrespectful and selfish around his teammates. His “me-first” attitude isn’t going to win any championships.

I complimented him for not holding out, but his actions were just as bad if not worse. He deserved this.

  • http://broncotalk.net (dee)

    Mark

Every coach in the NFL has to win, players don’t respond to losing or .500 coaches, thats why Shanahan is no longer here.

Let the season play out before you bury McD.

  • http://cdn0.sbnation.com/profile_images/111140/La_La_Mascot.jpg WhidbeyBronco

    Kyle
yes Brandon desrved this… I didn’t mean to imply it was ok to behave this way! I just feel the whole issue could have been avoided! Coach is supposed to be smarter than his kids!!

Gambino head back over to MHR with that crap!! (It works both ways)

  • jbirchbronco

I for one liked Shanny, but was getting tired of ALWAYS just missing the playoffs. I liked Cutler, but never really liked his attitude. His “arm better than Elway” comment put me over the edge. Regarding the Cutler situation, I sometimes wonder if there was a little bit more behind the scenes that was never reported that lead to McDaniels being interested in Cassel. That’s just my opinion though. Hold on Bronx fans it’s going to be rough at first, but I believe McDaniels really wants to win and will do it with those players that care more about the team than themselves.

  • http://www.search-this.com mark

@jbirchbronco – I don’t like all the attitude these kids bring to the table these days either. But do something about it – talk to him! If we traded away every player with an attitude the Nuggets couldn’t even field a team. Carmelo would have been traded away 3 years ago when now he is starting to grow up. Sorry, but in my book a good coach needs to manage players, not just Xs and Os… I have come to expect some shenanigans out of young players, not from coaches.

  • http://broncotalk.net (dee)

Kyle – I agree with you.

WB – Did you not watch the video? After watching his antics, anything he deserved is out the window.

  • jbirchbronco

@mark – I’m just saying, whatever happened to the good ole’ days of TD, Elway, Rod Smith, McCaffery, Atwater and whoever else you want to put on that list. I feel we were extremely spoiled with our Super Bowl wins with the type of team we had. I do say what you’re saying about the Nugs. I’m over here on the other side of the Rockies and the same thing as happened w/ Carlos Boozer. Same stuff as Brandon Marshall. These two individuals have me exhausted like no other and both need a serious attitude adjustment. Do I believe McDaniels mis-handled Cutler? Sure do. It was Cutler though that wouldn’t return any calls to Bowlen. Either it’s tough to watch our Broncos go through this, I will still be a loyal fan!!

  • http://BroncoTalk.net Mr.East

You can or cannot wait for McDaniels to coach a game to form an opinion about him. However, I don’t see him punting the playbook or his headset when things don’t go his way.

Marshall isn’t being suspended for dropping passes or running poor routes, just like McDaniels isn’t being suspended for trading Cutler, signing a baker’s dozen of Patriots to the team, and neglecting the NT spot.

As the Pope once put it,

    “To err is Brandon Marshall.”

  • http://www.search-this.com mark

@jbirchbronco – Agreed, it’s just brutal to watch for those of us that bleed Orange and Blue. But the team will go on, without Cutler, without Mashall and probably sooner rather than laster, without McDaniels…

The thing that I ended last season saying was, well at least we have a great QB and a beast of a WR. The future is bright. But now….

  • http://cdn0.sbnation.com/profile_images/111140/La_La_Mascot.jpg WhidbeyBronco

    dee
who let the situation get so bad, the kid or the dad…

yeah, it may be too late now, the team can’t let one player disrupt things…

I’m pissed that we’ve blown up another skill position that we were strong in!! Anybody else?!!

  • http://BroncoTalk.net Mr.East

    Mark,

I was unware that the building blocks of the team were a pouty QB and WR that haven’t won any games of importance. Give me a great NT and a great LT any day.

    WB,

That’s a terrible analogy. McDaniels isn’t a “Dad” and Marshall isn’t a “kid.” Marshall has to start acting like a man and McDaniels can’t afford to stoop down to treat him like a kid. McDaniels has to draw the line in the sand and Marshall can choose where he will stand. It’s obvious that it’s all about the money when it comes to Marshall.

  • http://BroncoTalk.net Mr.East

In other words you’re not supposed to wipe the ass of every talented player who doesn’t get things they’re way. It tends to send the wrong message to the rest of the team.

I guess it is McDaniels fault for telling him he’s not getting a new contract and them expecting him to accept a measly 2.198 million dollars for a year of work. Poor Marshall, the trust factor must so confusing when you’re not making 9 million a year!

  • jbirchbronco

@mark – I’ve been thinking a little bit more about the Jazz/Nuggets situation. I also believe it has a lot to do with the type of coach that is coaching the team. Coach Karl is more adapt to coach the Carmelo, JR Smith type, whereas Coach Sloan isn’t. I believe the same goes for our Bronx. Shanahan was the type to coach Travis Henry, Cutler & Marshall and McDaniels isn’t. I guess it all depends on which type you’d rather have. I would rather not have to deal with all the drama.

  • http://www.search-this.com mark

@WhidbeyBronco – “who let the situation get so bad, the kid or the dad… ” That’s well said. And while this suspension is deserved it’s just another easy way out for McDaniels. He still doesn’t take to Marshall, he just sits him.

Let me ask you this. How does this story end? How does it end happily if you don’t talk?

  • bw53

Marshall has proven with his immature and unprofessional actions–beyond a shadow of a doubt–that HE DID NOT DESERVE A CONTRACT EXTENSION!

Credit should be given to Bowlen and McD for handling this situation appropriately.

  • Roy

I want to know how the situation could have been avoided. Give him a new deal when he just had surgerry and is one arrest away from a year long suspension? Pander to his wants? Give into his diva attitude?

Marshall is a perfect example of an unprofessional primadonna. He wants to complain about our coaching medical staff? Send his ass to Cleveland. I am sure they will give him a new contract. Try to get a trade srtaight up for either Cribbs or Shaun Rogers.

  • jbirchbronco

@mark – It’s way brutal watching the team I’ve been cheering for, since I was born, go through this. I too said the same thing at the end of last year, but looking back now have said the same “Maybe next year” thing since we played the Steelers in the AFC Championship. Actually probably more since our SB days. I also agree w/ what you said about the future being bright with Cutler and Marshall. I believe the future still will be right, because I believe in my Bronx and I believe that they will start bringing in more talented players with a better head on them. They will start bringing in more Royals, more Champs, more Team before I players and we WILL see this thing get turned around. The only question I have is that will they give McDaniels the time to do it? Because I do believe he’s on the right track, although he did have one HUGE SCREW UP!!

  • OC Bronco

    WB-
Who isn’t pissed that we’ve lost 2 pro-bowlers. But my agreement with you ends there. Blaming McD makes no sense to me.

The Cutler fiasco began when he outright disagreed with Bowlen’s coaching decision. That isn’t for Cutler to say. Then McD took calls and considered a trade. But don’t you find it odd that we got much more for Cutler than the Chiefs gave away to get Cassell – doesn’t that tell you McD wasn’t trying too hard to trade him? Or do you think NE wanted the worst offer? Yeah that makes sense let’s take 2nd rounders and give away other picks rather than get multiple firsts.

Now Marshall – He’s like Nuke LaLouche. All the talent in the world but a 5 cent head. That is why we can’t trade him. He’s got no worth due to his off-field discretions. No team wants to give up a high draft pick much less pay him big dollars knowing he will likely be suspended again.

Lastly, I’m not a kool-aid drinker. I prefer scotch. And my scotch tells me I will be drinking a lot of it this season because we might not be so good. We suked last year against a cake schedule but I think we will be vastly improved although our record won’t show it. Still we are headed in the right direction. No more Daryl Gardners and Travis Henrys.

  • http://www.webmdreviews.com Robert

It is pretty obvious by the context of some posts who didn’t play sports for a good coach in high school or college (if played sports at all). There seems to be a real disconnect between what the importance of team mentality is vs the importance of a player at 1 position.

For the record. Cutler was one of the bottom 10 QB’s in the redzone last year. Please stop referring to him as great. He might be one day but he has not earned that yet.

Marshall led the league in dropped passes and had a whopping 6 td’s last year. He isn’t a great route runner and despite the promise to improve, is not a red zone threat by any means.

I think everyone can pretty much agree that Shanahan was taking the team in the wrong direction so we can stop talking about McD has ruined this season. You can’t break what is already broken.

Look at the best teams in the NFL for the last decade or longer

    Patriots, Colts and Steelers

What do all 3 teams have in common? The people they bring into the organization are high class and team first players and coaches. Anyone who thinks Marshall wouldn’t be a problem for Dungy, Cowher, Tomlin or Bilichick is absolutely right but NOT because Marshall wouldn’t throw fits or act the same. He would. His extreme immaturity and unwillingness to see how he is in anyway at fault for all of his troubles, guarantee that.

He wouldn’t be a problem because they would suspend him until he either straightened up or until they got the right trade deal that best fit the teams need and then move him.

McD didn’t lie about Cutler. He was contacted about a trade offer and he listened to it. Then he wouldn’t promise Cutler he wouldn’t be mentioned in any future trade talks. Was it a bad move? Maybe. On the same token, Cutler obviously felt he was worth more than anyone else and once those colors were shown, he needed to be moved. That attitude no longer fits.

Our new coach won’t be fired this year or next year so give him the chance to show what he can do and support the “team”.

Let me pose a conversation that should have happened months ago:

“Hey Brandon, thanks for meeting with me. I have been watching all your game-footage from last season and I must say, It’s very impressive. I’m sure glad you are on this team. I understand that you are not satisfied with your contract? I can understand this, your production has been very good the last couple of years and you would like to see your contract reflect that. I would love to see you get that new contract too, but right now we can’t do that Brandon. But if you go out there this year and perform at the level we both know you are capable of doing and can demonstrate that all the off-field stuff is a thing of the past I can promise you that you will receive that contract that you want. Sound good Brandon? Great, I’m glad we had this talk now let’s play some football.”

Feel free to change some of the verb-age, but it’s a start. A start that never happened. They never talked. And now we are where we are.

  • http://www.webmdreviews.com Robert

Mark you must be good friends with McDaniels to know that conversation never took place. I’m sure you know that Bowlin, one of the most placid and people friendly owners in the league, didn’t have that conversation either in their 1 on 1 which left Marshall demanding a trade. I am glad we have such an outstanding insider contributing to these posts. Keep up the outstanding work.

  • kerry

oh who gives a shit. i mean really. this guy wants out, he doesnt wanna be here so take what you can get for him or just cut his ass. this is absurd. and people wonder why Denver fans are so divided about McDaniels and this entire football team. and McDaniels thinks we can win without him, shit we werent gonna win with him! this team has NO direction.

  • jbirchbronco

Welcome Kerry, the most pessimistic so called Bronco fan there ever was!! Look at the brightside Kerry that is if you can find one!!

  • http://cdn0.sbnation.com/profile_images/111140/La_La_Mascot.jpg WhidbeyBronco

I can’t resist saying that I wonder how a lot of you Shanny haters were fans at all during the times when four SB losses were the highlight of our of proud history! You probably weren’t there.

For the record AGAIN… I don’t blame McD completely for Cutler or Brandon! That’s crazy. He is partly responsible for letting things get so bad! He’s the boss for Christ’s sake! I wish we would have hired as much a ‘personnel’ coach as an offensive guru to move on after Shanny.

That being said. We’ll agree that it’s going to be tough this season. Hopefully only the real fans will stick around!! I was at the Seattle game and sat with several true Broncos fans right in the middle of the Hawks nest… There are a lot of us out there still!!

I’ll match my Bourbons to your Scotch (OC Bronco) as we enjoy the hell out of this season of happy agony in the manner other true NFL fans end up doing every year!

Proud to be a Broncos fan

@Gambino – Your post reek of assumption.
    ———-

I got a good laugh about that one too…

Robert is EXACTLY right. Dungy wouldn’t deal with his BS and just get rid of him before he can become a cancer. McD was stuck with him because that’s the hand he was dealt. He’s dealing with like a seasoned vet if you ask me. To think that a simple conversation would solve this problem is beyond naive. Marshall didn’t want to be here and one simple ass kissing convo isn’t going to make him stay…

I guess you work for the Broncos and can say with confidence that convo has also never happened…**sigh**
