Stink List: Pre-Season Week 2Â
Note: As I mentioned last week, when the regular season starts I will be posting the  Stink List late Sunday or Monday night, during the preseason the deadline I set for myself was Wednesday. I wanted to give the game some time to air out, and also let any other news of pertinence expunge itself into the open. That being said, here I sit on Thursday, having already failed myself. I’ll go ahead and blame waking up early/little sleep or a general “tiredness” on being a day past my self imposed yet self rejected deadline. Everyone is tired these days no? We live in a world where everyone is tired.
“How’s it going?”
“Not bad. Tired.”
How far back in the history of humankind do we have to go to find a well rested consensus? I don’t care when it is, take me there, I’ll deal. Just let me take Direct TV Season Ticket with me in the time machine. Being tired, you stink! Who else made the cut? Read on!
1. Tony Scheffler has got to be having a bad week. A big fumble in a game that doesn’t mean anything, and now his Bromance is visiting this week with his hands all over a new tight end. Cutler is getting drunk & slapping girls asses while skipping out on checks with Greg Olsen. Â Maybe they’ll all hang out, Tony no doubt will be the 3rd wheel. He won’t be able to take it, too many Cutler-Olsen inside jokes, too many fist pounds (followed by “blowing it up”), too much for Tone. Our hearts go out to ya Bro-ski.
I do wish that we would have seen more from Scheffler in the first two games, and maybe McD isn’t showing all his cards, and maybe we’ll get to see more this weekend, but I had a realization about Scheff. He has consistently been a fan favorite in Denver since his rookie season, and why not? He was part of the 06′ three musketeers, he’s got great hands and can make his way up field when given the opportunity. Only thing is, he has been nothing more than a mediocre TE in a division known for having two of the best. RIP Gonzo. Â Could that be where our infatuation has come from? Us, wanting to find our Antonio Gates or Tony Gonzales, wanting to fit in. Forget trying to be the next Gates, I just hope that he can produce as much as Zach Miller is projected to, or at least be as effective if even in a smaller role than Miller. We’ve never had a reason to dislike Tony, injuries aside, I just hope this year we have a reason to love Tony. After all, he’s looking for a new Brohemian to chillax with. We’ve always had reasons to love
2. Champ and the secondary. Ever since sending Portis to DC for the future Hall of Famer we’ve enjoyed the luxury of owning “One of the best secondaries in the game”. The fact was rarely questioned, through the years of new faces at CB2, through the changes in defensive personnel, having Champ was a free pass as far as the media was concerned. As far as reality is concerned the adage/label held steady pretty darn true as well. The biggest concern defensively this off season was the line. The line that has so far added more pressure on the QB since Doom stormed the league as a rookie. With this pressure should come turnovers, or so we hope. Here’s hoping that those turnovers start this week against JC. Here’s hoping that Goodman lives up to the hype given. Here’s hoping that the inevitable decline in Champs game doesn’t start this year. You know what we need to see? Bailey pick for six, how great that would feel! Almost as great as
3. Tommy Brandstater must have felt. Tommy did his part last Sunday night contributing with a superb performance as “The Rookie QB”. The cameras were set, lights were on, director yelled ACTION and Tommy played the role perfectly, managing to get a few short dunks off while bumbling into 3 sacks and a picture perfect fumble. All that was missing was an accidental lining up under left guard. Shooting scenes 3a & 4b in the next two weeks, set up well by now resting Chris Simms, look for slight improvement by Brandstater this week followed by a 300yd, 4 touchdown, including a game winning hail marry throw in his game. Tommy Brandstater is our Matt Saracen, Ingle you’re Landry.
