UPDATE: McDaniels told reporters after practice that Torain has been released.
It’s been a tumultuous day for Denver Broncos running backs. The team signed RB Marcus Thomas Wednesday, got Lamont Jordan back to practice from injury, and have reportedly decided to start Knowshon Moreno Friday. Now, ESPN’s Bill Williamson reports that the Broncos have lost Ryan Torain for the 2009 preseason, and possibly longer.
Torain, who was wearing a large knee brace during training camp and missed at least one practice, has reportedly strained the PCL in his left knee.
The Broncos have announced no roster moves – all of these reports are secondhand, but the team would have had to adjust their 80-man roster to add Thomas. Since Torain is expected to miss time, and the team added another RB instead of some other position, it isn’t a stretch to speculate that Torain’s is the roster spot the team adjusted. The team has three options if they want to free up Torain’s spot: waive him, place him on Injured Reserve, or place him on the PUP list. The third option would give Torain the opportunity to come back after Week Six of the regular season.
We will update you either way when we know more, but for the time being, you can connect the dots. Torain missing the preseason, and possibly more, is a logical fit. [Big props to gobronx for the note on the PUP list!]
