Broncos Claim WR C.J. Jones off Waivers

C.J. Jones, wide receiver most recently of the Kansas City Chiefs, was awarded to the Denver Broncos Wednesday off waivers. The third-year player out of Iowa and the Canadian Football League rejoins Broncos Head Coach Josh McDaniels after he worked with McD on the New England Patriots practice squad in 2007.

Jones (5-11, 195) was released by the Patriots in 2008 and spent the rest of the season out of football. The Chiefs signed him in March 2009 and released him on June 19.

A special-teamer in the CFL, Jones returned nine kickoffs for 236 yards (26.2 avg.) and six punts 55 yards (9.2 avg.) in 2005 for the Montreal Alouettes. As a senior at Iowa, Jones set an Orange Bowl record when he returned the opening kickoff 101 yards for a touchdown against USC.

Jones must be resilient; he’s been bouncing in and out of the NFL since 2003 and has yet to tally a regular season reception. He definitely has ‘camp body’ written all over him, but for the time being, welcome to the Broncos! Press release after the jump.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — The Denver Broncos were awarded wide receiver C.J. Jones off waivers from Kansas City, it was announced Wednesday.

Jones (5-foot-11, 195 pounds) is a third-year wide receiver who has spent time on the active roster with Cleveland (2003) and New England (2008) as well as parts of two seasons on the practice squad with the Browns (2003-04) and Patriots (2007). Jones, who entered the NFL with Cleveland as a college free agent in 2003, was declared inactive for 11 games as a rookie and spent five weeks on the Browns’ practice squad. After spending the 2004 season on the Browns’ practice squad, Jones was allocated to NFL Europa, where he caught 10 passes for 118 yards and a touchdown for Cologne. He was released following Cleveland’s training camp in 2005 before being allocated by Seattle to NFL Europa where he made seven catches for 82 yards with Berlin.

Jones spent the 2006 season out of football after competing in Seattle’s training camp. He spent the entire 2007 season on New England’s practice squad. In 2008, Jones was declared inactive for the first regular-season game for the Patriots before being released and spending the rest of the season out of football. Kansas City signed Jones on March 5, 2009, as an unrestricted free agent but waived him on June 19.

Jones spent the 2005 season playing with the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League where he returned nine kickoffs for 236 yards (26.2 avg.) and six punts 55 yards (9.2 avg.).

In college at the University of Iowa, Jones was a two-year starter, totaling 72 catches for 902 yards (12.5 avg.) and 10 touchdowns in 24 games. As a senior, Jones set an Orange Bowl record when he returned the opening kickoff 101 yards for a touchdown against the University of Southern California.

Prior to playing for the Hawkeyes, Jones was a standout at Garden City Community College in Garden City, Kan. He amassed 74 catches for 1,463 yards and 18 touchdowns while adding eight scores on punt returns.

Jones was named one of the top 50 players in the state of Florida as a junior and senior at Santaluces High School in Santaluces, Fla. Clinton Jones was born on Sept. 20, 1980.

    Kerry your right he did kill dogs. but last time i check after you serve your time you paid your debt to society. It isnt rite to hold ppl to there past after they’ed serve there time. I just though it was Low to bring someone’s past business up like that.

    O i guess in 2000 you wouldn’t have taken Ray Lewis hmmmm. I would mind Plaxico, Ronnie Brown, Brandon Marshall, Randy Moss, Marshawn Lynch, your fave Albert Hayneworth, etc. all those guys did wrong in some form to HUMANS and they are hell of great players in there own ways. And you get mad a guy for killing animals. I have four dogs and di don’t support fighting rings or killing of animals i just dont see why the guy cant move on.

    Mike Vick cant instantly make this team the number one rushing offense. Being polished by a real QB coach in McDaniels can move him to a more accurate passer. I think you made this post “Orton is a “play not to lose QB” kind of like Trent Dilfer”. there is no way u compare Orton or Trent Dilfer to Mike Vick. Mike Vick is a winner who can bring a level of toughness like no other. I dont know if your in a cave up there in the rockies but before Mike Vick left only two QB names were heard more than his and that Peyton Manning and Tom Brady.

    Is it wrong of me to actually respect Phillip Rivers more than I do Jay Cutler? I use the word “respect” loosely. I wish that I cared more about the newest acquisitions made by this team since the draft. I can only hope the Mc Daniels system will truly work, this gamble that Pat Bowlen has taken has me a tad bit worried.

    i hear you but last time i check both young and Vick arms a stronger than Orton, they both have more TD per season in the AIR. and they both play to win. You can never knock the ability they have in the clutch when it matters the most. All i’m saying is with the proper QB coach. Vick can be a Tim Tebow and develop into a McNabb

    robtink242, this offense does not require a rocket arm it requires timing and accuracy (both of which Vick lacked when he was playing) and some smarts (which once again, your boy is lacking). We haven’t seen Orton throw a single pass for this team, give the man a shot.

    Is it so hard for us to imagine that a guy who put up 18tds/12ints/2900yds with the crap wr corps of the Bears can’t put up better numbers with the HUGE offensive upgrade that the Denver WR’s makeup? Let’s just add in that he’ll never be sacked 27x again, not even 15. I don’t see any reason why we won’t see an improvement in that stat line. And I don’t wanna hear anything about how good Forte was and how we carried that teams offense, 3.9 ypc is garbage in the NFL. Moreno will easily match and surpass that, all he needs is the opportunity. I don’t see this as much of stretch to project a line of 23tds/14ints/3400yds. It all falls back on what the defense can do this year. Don’t worry about Orton, all he needs to do is be accurate, the days of the airing it out down field are gone, but he does need to move his comp % over 60 for this to work, and of course there’s that lingering issue with #15. We don’t need a star, we need someone consistent.

    Lot of pressure on Ayers, that’s a definite. I’ve seen a few analysts dub him as the one rookie with the most pressure on him to perform or the one rookie whose team will require the most out of them. You can actually say that for both Ayers and Moreno, if these TWO, not ONE, can have an impact then we’ll surprise a few people this year, but the emphasis will be on Ayers.

    how do you know Orton wont be sacked 15 times or more? sure we have a great O-line, but behind that O-line we had a mobile, nimble QB with a quick release. Orton is a statue, slow release and has a reputation of folding under pressure.

    I don’t, I just have faith in the fact that McD is going to nail the fact you state above into the O-Line’s head, and that the system is setup to get rid of the ball asap, but can you honestly see Orton getting sacked 20 or more times behind that line, no way. Also, you can’t compare the lines of Chicago and Denver, one is top three and the other is average at best. So let’s say that knocks off 7-9 sacks. Let’s also keep in mind that if Moreno plays like the #12 pick, Orton won’t HAVE to pass as much, knock off another 3-5? I good running game effectively takes the pressure off of a QB by creating higher comp% passing downs. I see there’s no questioning the projected stat line though. Not too much of a reach I don’t think. I’m not saying that Orton is going to burn up the NFL in passing, but to project him to improve his overall stat line via a significant upgrade in offensive talent and protection should be a given. All he has to do is put the ball in between the numbers 60% of the time and let his receivers work on their YAC. If he can’t do that, well, what can we say, hello to the longest season ever.

    I’m not going to sit here like many others and rip our QB without seeing him play live first. No, I’m going to do the math and see that we’re putting an average player behind a line of highly above average OL’s, one of the top 3 WR corps (hopefully if they can resolve THE ISSUE) in the NFL, and working with the #1 all around best RB available in the draft. Adding in that they have Hillis, and Scheffler, tell me why he can’t succeed? Anyone? You have to have SOME type of talent to start at QB and win in the NFL, right? All he has to do is get them the ball, and we’re not talking 40yd+ passes here.

    Just an FYI – when did Cuntler live up to the pressure? And don’t give me against San Diego. We had a major referee eff up in that one. Just because you can throw a football 90+ mph, or aren’t afraid to throw into double coverage doesn’t mean that you THRIVE under pressure. We traded away MAJOR TALENT, but not WINNING TALENT.

    I really can’t imagine why you think Orton will be this bad. You really think Cassel who didn’t start a game of football since 8th grade is so much better because he knew the system? McD is a “QB Genius” or whatever and picked Orton as the best candidate for at least this coming season. Orton has plenty of experience, won plenty of games in the National Football League, only 1 year on his contract, I find hard to believe Orton is soo much less mobile than Cutler was. Anyways I think he will be fine and come week 3 I hope I can say “see Kerry, not so bad.”

    I call Kerry has to buy a Orton jersey and post it when Orton brings the Broncos 3-0.

    It still amazes me how people can start writing off the QB, the coach, and the season way before one game has been played. Simple logic calls for giving it a chance. Every fan owes that to the team, and yourself. Orton does not have Cutlers arm, but may very well have a considerably better attitude and I, for one, would rather have a QB with some smarts and a good attitude than Captain Morgan under center. Cutler may help Chicago turn things around. Fine, good for him. Orton, or whoever in QB’ing in the future, may also help us due to the new system. We have an incredible OLine, and that plays a huge roll in overall success. McD may also be bring some smarts and new ideas. After all, he seems to have done well with a winning organization over the past eight years. Give him a chance.
    Another thing that gives me some optimism is the attitude McD brings. What I mean is how he seems to be installing some order, a real hard business attitude. As for me, I like that. Shanny seemed to be running a country club, getting soft. This isnt Romper Room for a bunch of spoiled athletes with bad attitudes. Work within the system, play with everything you have, every down. If not, get out. Be a leader, not a whiner sitting on the bench waiting for the next rum and coke. How many times have Rod Smith and Eddie Mc been referenced on this forum? Just like star QBs, those types of selfless players are hard to find too. I would take a bunch of Rod Smiths and Eddie Mcs over some of the punks we have/had any day. Ok, sorry about the soapbox.

    Weakness of the team is surely the DLine. I hope somebody steps up or its going to be a long year. We don’t have a NT or DE’s that play the 5 tech well. I hope they know how to put there hands up and get some tips.

    That power ranking for QB’s is a joke. Remember, the Bears finished 9-7 last year, and everyone thinks thier defense was great. They were ranked 21 st. at the end of the year. The bears offense ranked worse but had a crappy O-line, and terrible receivers.

    first off Denver isnt gonna gonna start 3-0. its hilarious how all of you think Cincinnati is just gonna be an automatic win. not even close. Palmer is back, Benson is healthy, Chad Johnson is back and the Bengals has the 12th overall ranked defense last year WITHOUT all the additions. guys like DE Michael Johnson they drafted. they have one of the best CB tandems in football. the Bengals are not gonna be a win. especially in Cincinnati.

    Kerry- I was stating that the QB power ranking was a joke. Last year the Bears Offense ranked 26 overall. How can you judge Orton’s play with the help he had to work with. There is no way our current QB’s rank at the bottom. It will be interesting to see how Cutler ranks with what he has to work with.

    hey i dont think we are the worst but we aremt to far from it. thats if you rate the QB but every other part of this offense that will make the QB look good should of landed us top 15. atleast in general offense. Kerry we are going to beat Cincy. I’m sorry i just think this team has to much to prove and our coach should know all eyes are on him and he will put his best foot forward.

    When since Bronco fans pull for the opposing team. Even in games were doubted in you stick to your team.

    how can i judge Ortons performance? its pretty simple actually. his numbers (or lack there of) scream that this guy isnt the QB that can take a team to the next level. if a QB has to have a team just to make him look good the that should cause concern. the winners and great QB’s like Marino for example are great QB’s WITHOUT players to MAKE them look good. hell even Elway had nobody around him and carried the team all throughout the 80’s. id be alot more comfortable if we had a QB that could go out and win games as opposed to a QB who needs guys to help him look decent.

    6. Eagles. healthy McNabb, Westbrook. new LT Peters and rookie Maclin.
    7. Chargers. healthy LT, Rivers, Sproles and Gates.

    the Qb id be comfortable with plays in Chicago unfortunately. but since i have to choose then id say none of the QB’s this team currently has are capable of it. so none. i dont think this team is going to the playoffs this year since we dumped Cutler. next year look for Matt Cassel to be in Denver if KC doesnt sign him longterm.

    I don’t think Denver if no. 1. I think that 18 is accurate if not a little high. I mean I would change some teams but I was just curious. For bashing just about everything that we do I was just curious as to how the rest of the NFL plays out.

    Kerry I would agree with everything except maybe Houston @ 4. Matt is constantly hurt, do you honestly think Matt Schaub, Andre Johnson and Slaton are THAT much better than Orton, Marshall and Moreno? I don’t.

    uh yeah Houston is that good. they were third in offense behind Denver last year and have only gotten a healthy Matt schaub back. and yeah Schaub, Johnson and slaton are better then Orton, Moreno and Marshall. Orton is not as good as Schaub. Schaub started only 11 games last year and had more yards and less INT’s then Orton who started 15 games. Slaton had 1,282 yards and 9 TD’s and Moreno………hasnt even taken a snap in the NFL. and Johnson had over 1,500 yards and 8 TD. Marshall is in a dink and dunk offense so he may not come near the numbers he had last year. so yeah the Texans combo is better with a better QB, a proven RB and the second best WR in football behind Larry Fitzgerald. we have Orton who is not good, an unproven RB and a WR who is great but may not match his numbers due to a weaker QB. plus Marshall may be suspended during the year due to his upcoming trial. Texans Trio is definetly better and PROVEN to be better.

    The only stat that matters in an offense is scoring, you should know that by now. The Texans were 17th, which means they sucked at it. Your comparison with Orton, who didn’t have an O line or recievers worth the shit I take every morning, is simply speculation. All your bs talk about Orton has no merit. He should do fine. If there is one thing mcd knows how to do its score. They put huge numbers with a backup QB, 8th in the league in scoring. Lets be optimistic like good fans and keep our heads high. You can bitch and moan all you want if we start to float up shit creek without a paddle. Moreno is gonna kill, you watch. He might even hit the 2,000 yard mark with recieving and rushing yards combined. The only thing I’m worried about is our D, especially our line.

Cause i believe he has that pullout a win mentallity or forth qrt luck. But i’m starting to think he has something against black QB. He slaughter my thoughts of Troy Smith, Pat White, and Mike Vick. Which i think is too silly. But hey i can be wrong.

    I know a lot of you guys say mike vick and pat white dont fit the “system”. but its funny McDaniels held a work out for Pat White. Hmmmm mybe none of us knows the playbook. hmmm just a thought. Elway, Brady, Marino and Montana where winners because they held that mentallity.
