Update: You can get to the audio archive of the entire conversation here.

“I’m not looking for a certain kind of guy, I’m looking for a guy that can follow the system, be accurate, make smart decisions, lead the team to win, Jay could’ve been that guy”

“The off-season program is not mandatory, but I think the guys like to be around each other.  Also, the players like to be in Denver with the weather this time of year.  We have an amazing turnout for the offseason workouts, something like 96%.”

Scott:  “Why Matt Cassel?”

Josh:  “The reason we were brought up in this conversation…  we were trying to fill a lot of spots in free agency, then we got called into the thing because a lot of teams had interest in our quarterback (Cutler) and they knew I had a history with Matt.”

On the upcoming draft:  “We’ve got a lot of ammunition to target the players we want to get on draft day”

On how to use Hillis this season:  “I really like Peyton Hillis.  You may know we used a lot of different backs in a lot of situations in New England.  We will use a back any which way we can.  Denver knew last season as we did in New England that 4 backs is not enough for one season.”

Scott: We saw the hoodie in that press conference, are we going to see it on Sundays too?

Josh: “I will try hoodie on the sideline, but I kinda like that zip up pullover too”

If you tune it right now, you can listen to 1043 The Fan in Denver interview Josh McDaniels.  Follow the link here.

damn, i loved that interview… still on the ledge but feeling a lot better about this whole situation.

  • DepressedSF

Does McDaniels have tourette’s or something?

What’s with the constant throat clearing during the interview.

I just have to say that regarless of all the BS that’s been floating around. I think that this was the right move. I also believe that Jay presented himself very well. Bash me all you like. I’m entitled to my opinion.

B-Marsh looked excited at Kyle O. It got me fired up about the season. I still think we have a good shot at being a playoff contender if we can fix that thing we call a defense.

  • soxbigdog

    I love the B-Marsh line…

“It means nothing to throw for 4500 yards and 25 TD and you don’t win”

  • Jaiu

Not only is it hard to watch yer favorite sports team let a player of Cutler’s caliber and potential go, but there are ups and downs supporting them as well. Most of us may consider this a “down time”, but the season hasn’t started yet and as difficult as it is now, i have come to accept what has happened and look forward to the draft and the 09 season.

To cheese it up, i am saluting the Broncos flag as it is currently waving at half mast.

    GO BRONCOS

  • wbross57

anyone ever count how many times cutler says “you know” in any of his interviews? damn

  • Hansen

Yep, McD had some very valid points when addressing the offensive impotence. (17) 2 minute drives and only 1 field goal, etc. He has done some homework to rattle off those stats. I wasnt necessarily on the ledge, but I backed away quite a bit.

Yeah, Cutler presented himself well and was told to do so. All part of the sales job to Chicago. Suit, haircut, what to say. Terry Frei made a bit of a deal about cutler wearing a suit, but McD wearing a hoodie. Who gives crap what he was wearing!!!! Its football, not a fashion show. Remember Nolan wearing a suit in San Fran? Did they win?? No. But Bellichick wears a grubby hoodie and has 3 SBs. Hell, I even saw the guy wipe his snotty nose on the sleeve! You think Kraft gives a crap? Ok, so McD is following Bellichicks lead – so what. If he brings success and victories back to Mile High he can wear his bathrobe for all I care.

Nice quote by BMarsh too. Somewhat mature. It also means nothing to catch 100 passes, have a run in with the law AGAIN, and get suspended for multiple games.

  • Jaiu

    @wbross57

HAHA! i used to count how many times in [Broncos’] interviews when he’d say, “i mean uhh…”

  • Hansen

In addition Frei, McD did wear a suit during his original press conference. Now he was working and was dressed accordingly. Now go paint your nails, Frei.

  • broncoNM

Gotta give it to Orton…he has the right attitude and mind set…If he buys into the system which it sounds like he does this could workout fine…

he states “I’ve taken the same approach my entire career, and that is, my job description is to win football games,” he said. “And I’ve done a pretty good job of that and I plan to keep that up. I’m a hard worker. I’m not flashy by any means but my job is to play football and win and I plan to do that.”

I still don’t trust McDaniels… He said he has no regrets… I sense too much pride in him…

“Pride is the path to the dark side. Pride leads to getting rid of pro-bowl players. Getting rid of pro-bowl players leads to loosing. Loosing leads to suffering.”

  • broncoNM

hansen… i agree that was a DAMN GOOD interview by BMarsh.

  • Matt

Seeing B-Marsh’s interview reaffirmed my beliefs that the boys didn’t care for Cutler as much as most would think and that they’d be angered by the trade.

Great to see B-Marsh being positive and genuinely excited about the change as I thought he’d be crying that he wouldn’t be wracking up the yards from the long bombs courtesy of Cutler. I feel the locker room has a positive vibe all together.

This season will be rough regardless, thanks to the schedule, and even if we had Cutler this season I believe we would have a similar if not worse record than we will come out with.

Let’s just hope the draft works out well for us and we strictly pick defensive players of course.

I have faith in McD although history hasn’t been too pretty for ex-Pat’s; but hey, everyone’s making such a fuss about him before he’s been able to coach a game, hell, even a practice.

  • NathanH

I loved B-Marsh’s jersey. I think Orton or whoever wins the starting job for next season will end up doing a lot better then expected. If it is Orton, you have to expect his stats to be much, much better given McDaniels pass heavy offense, our much better pass blocking o-line, and our much better recieving crew. Brandon Marshall and Eddie Royal are much, much better targets then Brandon Lloyd or Hester.

If we draft right defensively, i’m confident we can still compete for a playoff spot.

I loved this interview by McDaniels though as well. Mostly the parts where he said we have ammo to get the players we want. That says to that if they want Raji, they’ll get him. And also the part about P-Hilll, because it answers some of our speculation.

  • http://birty.blogspot.com mikebirty

too right nathan, good to hear that mcd loves hillis as much as everyone else!

  • stav

I loved that stat line that Marshall threw out regarding not winning. Little bit of a snub to old #6, but who cares. Positive attitude, a real company man approach – basically he’s there to catch the ball/block/do whatever is needed by the team regardless of whose throwing the ball. Made me feel like some important components of this team stand with the decision. He also had a good line about, “Mr. B has two rings, and Coach McDaniels has two rings. I think they know what they’re doing,” or something to this affect.

In a another direction, when the draft comes, and we go defense with the 1st two picks, I’ll tell you right now, I won’t be disappointed. If Raji falls to #12, bingo, and yes at #18, big Rey who ran a 4.59 – 4.71 at the USC pro-day, if those two are Broncos after the 1st round? Big grin on my face. Now if Sanchez is there at #12 and Raji is gone? Interesting, but all we need is a competent system QB, is it Orton, is it Simms? I don’t know, but it could be. If we pass up Sanchez or Freeman in the 1st round for two defensive starters, I got no problem with it. One quick note on Cushing, two weeks ago I noted he had issues with the “juice” back in high school, and now? Both he and Mathews are rumored to have tested positive for steroids? Yeah, I’ll pass on Cushing that some people were hot on. Big shocker – Pete Carroll says they are clean. I’ll take the weedhead Raji over the juicehead any day, one is just retarded at night who can perform and the other is a chemically-induced performer.

Did anyone else notice in the Marshall interview that he already sounds like the patriots do when they give interviews? Team first, it’s all about winning, only positive talk about teammates and coaches. It’s pretty impressive that after only a few weeks McDaniels is instilling that attitude in the team. I’ve never heard Marshall talk like that before.

  • Hansen

I am feeling much better about all this. Mark – it is interesting the change of attitude. I feel that is a glimpse into what may have been lacking with Shannys rule compared to McD’s. There is some very interesting items to take away from these interviews – BMarsh’s, Cutlers and McDs. So many people bombed on McD due to his age, and that may prove to be true, but on the flip side he may be able to connect better to the players due to his age. He has energy, knowledge and enthusiasm. And he may very well know what he is doing. This year will be tough, a growing period. But with the amount of picks we have and a new attitude (at least at this point) there is some real promise here. I, for one, am very excited.

I am hesitant to use the C word, but there is some evidence Cutler may have been a bit of a cancer. I think everyone would agree that its better to have a true team mate with a weaker arm than a cancer with a cannon.

  • broncoNM

I have not heard alot of comments from bronco players about the trade except from BMarsh but im getting the sense that not many players were sad to see Cutler go…No broncos came to his defense…On the flip side some bears had some good things to say about Orton…especially Urlacher:
“I guess the Bears felt like we needed another quarterback, so they made a move,” Urlacher told the Chicago Tribune. “They gave up a lot. Cutler must be pretty good.”

“I guess we got better as a team,” Urlacher added, according to the newspaper. “You get a quarterback who is a Pro Bowl guy. But I will say this: I think Kyle Orton is a good quarterback. He’s a great teammate. I hope he does really well in Denver.”

Dont get me wrong i dont read alot into player comments but as stated on another forum its seems to be evident that Orton will be missed by some players in chicago and im not sure that Cutler will be that missed in the bronco locker room.

This offseason had not gotten off to the best start, nor a start any Bronco fan could imagine 6 months ago.

Cutler is a Bear and I am happy for him. His life long dream has come a reality. Things happen for a reason.

With a coach like McDaniels Orton can do the job. We have many draft picks to help us and Dawkings was a hell of a pick up.

Hillis will see a lot of play under this system and I have hope that we can surprise the league.

New beginnings are never a bad thing and as any NFL fan you have to realize that things change.

HOPE FOR 2009 BRONCOS 4 LIFE.

McDaniels is a wannabee fool. The truth is, the only difference from last year is you’ll have 3,200 yards passing instead of 4,500 yards. And since your defense will still suck, you’re looking at 4-5 wins.

So many people don’t get it. Jay could pull out some of the games where you gave up 35+ points. If you give up even 28, which will be every week, can Orton get you 30 points to win the game? hahahaha. No! Never!

You’ll see when the season starts how valuable Cutler was. 8-8 will look great to you! All McFool had to do was improve the defense and you have 10-11 wins. Instead you’re looking at 4-5 wins. You guys play sd twice, washington, philly, giants, dallas, pitt, new england, baltimore. That’s 9 basically guaranteed losses with your defense and Orton. All of those teams will score 30+ on you, and Orton will never be able to win a shootout. Dink and dunk passes won’t do it. If you go 4-3 in the other 7 games, that’s 4 wins. 4-5 wins is being generous. You might go 0-16 like the Lions. It is possible. On paper you have the worst team in the division. Get ready for the worst season in Broncos history! Thanks Josh!

Maybe the wrong topic to state this on but I will say it here… First of all McDaniels, you best believe that this is all because of you. I really hope you know what you are doing now. Your half -witted apologies that you made to Cutler like “Jay’s our guy… Well he is under contract.” You should have just stopped at, “Jay is our guy.” You are already hard headed. That is great to know. I’m sure that I did not read everything, but I believe that Pat Bowlen could have stopped this from happening way earlier. By the time he truly intervened the relationship was severed. I could have sworn that when Shanny was fired that Pat Bowlen did make comments about not wanting to change personnel on the offensive side of the ball and then when Cutler said that Bowlen had personally talked to him about keeping the offensive core together for Denver Pat denied ever discussing that with Cutler. That’s kind of hard to swallow considering I thought I heard it in a PUBLIC statement… Possibly I misinterpreted… I don’t know.

Now to Jay Cutler… I believe that you had the fans on your side when this all started. It was crooked what McDaniels tried to do. Maybe not from a business aspect, but from a star player/coach perspective. It was done in a sneaky manner and it was very cut throat. I believe Jay had the right to be mad about it FOR A WHILE, but then it was time to drop it! I really did like Jay, but I lost a lot of respect for him the way this went down. He forgot about his teammates and the biggest support he could have had… THE FANS! You are no better than McDaniels now Cutler. All I can hope for now is that you fall into the same mold and statistics of the past quarterbacks of the Chicago Bears, and what sucks is that I do follow the Bears too. Ugh…

Well what’s done is done now. Chicago, you have a pretty good quarterback and we landed up with Kyle Orton. That trade on paper looked like trading in a dollar and getting back .65 cents back. Sorry Kyle, but prove me wrong… PLEASE! Tell me it was just a Chicago thing and that this is what you needed to be truly successful. I know that he was something like 21-12 as a starter, but he also had that awesome Bear’s Defense to fall back on. GONE! I was really pissed at Pat Bowlen for this trade too, but I will give him some props on the justification that he gave to the fans on why he traded Cutler. Bowlen must have a great PR person to thank for that one, or he is a real stand up guy??? COME ON SEPTEMBER!!!
