UPDATE: Jenkins ran a 4.47 low and a 4.52 high at his pro day and his private workout is moved to the middle of next week, per SportingNews.com. I’m certain the two are unrelated. Denver will still be the first to get a crack at Jenkins.

According to SportingNews.com Ohio State cornerback Malcolm Jenkins’ first private workout will be with the Denver Broncos next Friday some time in the middle of next week. Also according to an interview Boston College defensive tackle B.J. Raji said he also has a private workout with Denver on Friday March 20th. According to PFT Connecticut’s running back Donald Brown will have his own workout come March 24th, the day before his pro day. Brown would be the second running back to workout for the Broncos. Small christian college Liberty’s Rashad Jennings worked out for Denver just last Sunday, March 8th.

The Draft is a little over a month away, it is good to see Denver checking out the top prospects available within their reach, that being Raji and Jenkins. It is no surprise to anyone if Raji falls the Broncos would be foolish not to select him. Now the prospect of Jenkins as a first rounder for Denver would make a statement. Perhaps Mike Nolan isn’t exactly planning for an antique secondary after all. McDaniels giving Brown and Jennings a workout causes some intrigue as well. All in all this is a smart move regardless of the level of interest. It’s good to see the front office is on the ball with this.

Here’s a quick synopsis of these players.

  • Name: Malcolm Jenkins
  • School: Ohio State
  • Standing: Senior
  • Height: 6’0
  • Weight: 204 (Combine)
  • Pro Day 40: 4.47
  • Round: Top 20 overall
  • Pros: Malcolm Jenkins has amazing size for a corner. Jenkins is the 2008 Jim Thorpe Award Winner, which puts him in the same company as Deion Sanders, Charles Woodson, Antoine Windfield, Roy Williams, Terrance Newman, Carlos Rodgers, Michael Huff, Aaron Ross, and Antoine Cason. Thats a pretty good list of company to be in the same sentence with. Jenkins is known for his great instincts and leadership shown during game time. Here’s some highlights and his combine footage.
  • Cons: The big question about Jenkins is his ability to play corner in the NFL with his linear speed. Jenkins was clocked at a 4.55 at the combine. UPDATE: Jenkins ran a 4.47 at his pro day which is closer to the speed teams want out of him.The instincts Jenkins possesses may allow him to keep with top receivers but his speed could leave him behind and better suited at free safety. Jenkins said in an interview with NFL Network at the combine that he wasn’t sure he was going to run the 40 at his pro day, which I believe is ill advised. Hopefully the nation will see a 40 around 4.5 or lower.

  • Name: B.J. Raji
  • School: Boston College
  • Standing: Senior
  • Height: 6’1
  • Weight: 331 (Pro Day)
  • Combine 40: 5.13
  • Round: Top 12 overall
  • Pros: This Boston College manbeast eats up blocks like no other. Raji is very good at not over pursuing and returning to the ball. Seriously, if you don’t believe me check it here and here. Here’s his combine footage.
  • Cons: Raji has encountered some maturity problems, which include being academically ineligible the 2007 season and he was also ejected from a game in 2006 due to throwing a punch. However, Raji has rebounded to a problem free 2008 season and has been impressing scouts not only with his skills but his personality as well. His weight has been fluctuating a few pounds here and there but he stated that it is just due to his hectic schedule and when things calm down he’ll be back on routine. Here is his interview with the NFL Network.

  • Name: Donald Brown
  • School: Connecticut
  • Standing: Junior
  • Height: 5’10
  • Weight: 210 (Combine)
  • Combine 40: 4.51
  • Round: 1-2
  • Pros: Donald Brown put up huge numbers at Connecticut through the years, totaling 3,800 yards in 3 seasons and 2,083 of those yards came this last season alone. Brown is a very patient back which would benefit him behind Denver’s offensive line. Also, Brown has great vision and just like Terrell Davis Brown is great at getting his shoulders square to the line of scrimmage. Drafting Brown is an interesting situation because he is way to entirely high for 12 and will be gone by 48. If Denver wants to land Brown some type of trade will have to be initiated. Here is his combine footage.
  • Cons: Some analysts have asked why Brown didn’t beat last years’ starter Andre Dixon. Brown’s ability to run the ball north to south is also questionable. Durability and ball security have come into question as well. Brown has been recommended to gain some weight to deal with a full time workload in the NFL.

  • Name: Rashad Jennings
  • School: Liberty
  • Standing: Junior
  • Height: 6’1
  • Weight: 231 (Pro Day)
  • Pro Day 40: 4.52
  • Round: 4-5
  • Pros: Jennings has been labeled a ‘work horse’ style back. Jennings isn’t the fastest back out there but he is quite fast for his size. A true north to south runner, Jennings will run you right over. Jennings is extremely productive, he has totaled 4,051 yards and 42 touchdowns in his career. In every single game of 2008 Jennings played he tallied at least 100 all purpose yards, only one game where he did not rush for 100 yards, but he ran for 56 and caught for 54. Jennings will most likely be available in the later rounds and Denver has an abundance of those picks. Here is his combine footage and a highlight reel.
  • Cons: Jennings is from the Division I-AA, has never really played against any big namers, and possibly the hardest opposing team was Coastal Carolina. Since Jennings doesn’t have great speed he will be caught by some linebackers and most safeties. Jennings also had problems Pittsburgh before transferring to Liberty.

What do you think Bronco Nation? Should Denver add to the crowded running back situation via this year’s draft? What about Jenkins and Raji? Could the draft be any freakin’ farther away!? Air it out! Also, keep a look out for my updated mock draft to be released soon.

  • http://birty.blogspot.com mikebirty

well they’re not drafting Jenkins then. Or is it only reports on trades that we shouldn’t believe?

  • stav

no jenkins please – we had a slow corner last year who we cut for obvious reasons. He was unimpressive at the combine and as much as he’s a loudmouth, Deion Sanders pointed out flaws with his technique which would be a negative on the next level. Let’s not draft a cb at #12 only to change him to a safety. Just draft a true safety with #48 or the 3rd round if that’s a need they want to address.

  • Richard

Should Jay “Jeff George II” Cutler decide not to attend the meeting on the 16th, lets ship his ass to Detroit for their 2nd first rounder at 20, their 2nd at #33, and next years 2nd rounder. Then we can improve the D this year. Looks like we could really help ouselves, and cure our hemmoriod problem(Buzz Crook) at the same time.

  • WhidbeyBronco

Richard u are perfect! A perfect example of the fair weather, NOT-knowledgeable fans that I comment-skip as a rule for your idiocy. Please refrain from posting so early next time so I don’t accidentally read you. Thank you.

    Back to the actual topic…
Please no Jenkins! I’d much prefer we risk a fast guy in later rounds!
Raji? How could we get him? We have no reasonable trade bait.
Anyone else available at #12? I like East’s idea of Michael Johnson or better yet trade down.

  • NathanH

We need to fill a starting spot with our first, so I dont see Jenkins unless we really fall in love with him.

I also don’t think Donald Brown is realistic at all unless we traded down to the mid 20’s and I hate the idea of going RB in the 1st.

I really, really like Jennings, and have been high on him for months. The guy runs like Brandon Jacobs and seems to have some great character. He’s strong as a bull.

I’m hoping we trade down to the late 1st, pick up another 2nd, and pick up whats left in order of Clay Matthews, Clint Sintim or Connor Barwin.

  • sam

    ok

  • Richard

WhidbeyBronco I have been a Bronco fan since I moved to Colorado in !975, and have been attending football games since 1959. So don’t give me your BS assessment because you disagree with me. I don’t know who the hell you are and I franlly don’t CARE. ASSHOLE!

  • kerry

wow im surprised most arent whining because they didnt work out Rey Maualuga

  • Richard

NathanH I agree about moving down, and as you know I like Clint Sintim, my only concern about Connor Barwin is where do you play him. 3 yrs at TE and one at DE in division II, the kid is going to have a steep learning curve. Clay Matthews has one year of starting experience, but seems to have some real upside.

  • http://broncotalk.net (dee)

    Kerry

They already have a hush hush agreement in place with ReyRey, as you know we never talk to the draftees we eventually draft. After we trade Scheffler for a 2nd, we may package our other send for another first where we could draft Jenkins …. ?

Crazy? I dont think it is out of the realm of possibilities….

  • Dakota fan

Stupid question time- I haven’t looked at all at the draft class this year except on this site. Is Clay Matthews the son of the original Clay Matthews, nephew of Bruce? If so, I feel old. I’ll REALLY feel old when I see the GRANDSON of a guy I watched play.

  • AKscott

Besides, look at the picture above.. Do we really want him doing that to Champ every time champ makes a good play??

    How distracting!!

  • http://BroncoTalk.net Mr.East

Dakota fan – Yep thats the one.

    AKscott – Hahaha that’s hillarous.

Richard – Allegedly they offered their #1 and #20 at first.

mikebirty – Birty I can always rely on you for your awesome comedic take.

  • myerda00

Guys do not quote what the Broncos did in the past. This is not the Shanahan guided Broncos, it is the new McDaniels policy direction Broncos. Not interview who you draft, yeh not smart.
#12 should not be Jenkins or Maualuga because both would be a big reach. I really think these guys, along with Brown and others will be interviewed because Denver will trade down. Now at the bottom of round one and the top of 2, you will look at these players.
Of course if Cutler decides he does not fit in Denver because of no Shanahan or Bates or Leach or Scheffler then a lot of picks will be in Denvers column.

  • NathanH

Richard- I think Barwin fits in PERFECT as a 3-4 pass rusher. Watch some highlights of him(you have to look at them objectively, because…well, they’re highlights), he has a nasty streak, and great athleticism.

And dee- Maualuga won’t be taken 12th, not unless he runs an amazing 40 at his pro day. I think our best option at 12 if Raji’s not there(which he won’t be ), is Tyson Jackson. Not the most exciting pick, but he’s ready to play and fills a pretty big hole.

Also, it’s very wishful thinking to believe that Scheffler’s worth a 2nd. He’s never started more then 7 games in a season and and at 26, even if he can prove to be healthy, no team would trade a 2nd for him. I think if we can get another 4th for him, we take it. Then we parlay the 4ths to move up if we see someone.

  • AKscott

Shockey went for a 2nd and a 5th.. no way we get a 2nd for tony

  • AKscott

..and 2nd and a 5th for winslow jr

i agree w/ Nathan h. a 4th is probably closer to what we’ll get, which i dont think is worth it at all..

    KEEP TONY!

  • Mike

I hate to see Scheff go, myself.

  • Mike

Does anybody know what’s on Jenkins’ arm? Is that a brand of a horseshoe? I can’t tell from the pic

  • Dakota fan

    Mike:

I think it’s either a brand of an Omega on his arm(possible frat sign) or his best friend’s initials, one or the other.

  • Mike

Thanks. I found this on another site. “It’s the Greek symbol for Omega. He’s in the fraternity Omega Psi Phi”
Apparently many fraternaty brothers do this. It must hurt, though.

  • Richard

NathanH I think Tyson Jackson IS an exciting pick. I downloaded an LSU game just to watch his play. Hes strong, quick, has very good lateral movement, and is a really big boy. He was significantly taller than the Offensive linemen, and intimindated the hell out of them. He will need some coaching on technique, but I’m sure Coach Nunnelly can work with him.

I’m not saying Connor Barwin isn’t a good player, he has what it takes to make it, my concern is that coming from a Div II school he won’t be a Plug and Play type guy. He may need a year to acclimate to the Pros.

myerdaOO You’re correct about Maualuga and Jenkins. After reviewing the Free Agant acquisitions, we probably won’t take a DB in the first round, and we don’t need a LB this early, especially when one of my favorite prospects, Jasper Brinkley will be available in later rounds.

  • AKscott

lol dakota fan.. best friends initials.. thats rich!

  • jcampb72

Way to go McDumba$$! Cutler put his house up for sale. Sounds like he seriously doesn’t want to be a bronco. I don’t blame him. I officially am not buying my season tix, i’ll blame it on this not the terrible economy.

  • the decider13

My top picks for number 12 (In order)

    1.Raji
    2.Jenkins
    3.Everette Brown
    4.Tyson Jackson
    5. Aaron Maybin

and maybe Rey would be acceptable

If we take anyone besides these five, I will be shocked and dismayed. And to everyone that says Jenkins can’t be a good corner cause he is too slow needs to rely less on combine times and more on game tape. Jenkins is a very good, physical corner, that would really push our secondary to a new level. It definately not the biggest need (D line is for sure the biggest as you can tell by my other choices) but it would still be a good pick.

Also, I really like both brown and jennings if they are available in the 3rd to 4th round. Brown will go sooner than that I think, but Jennings in the 4th would be fine by me.

  • Boisebroncoguy

I just saw that article as well. It does say though that he still has a condo in Denver. I’m not sure if this is a big deal or much ado about nothing.

  • jcampb72

His parker house is right next to the facility. His condo is for partying, I see him a lot dwntwn. He’s clearly pissed. I’m just waiting for him to make it public that he wants out. He might not say anything, monday we will know for sure.

  • Richard

According to Channel 7, Cutler put his Castle Pines home up for sale yesterday. Bought it at the high for 1.39 mill in 2006. Will try to sell it for 2 mill in a depressed market. Does anyone else see this as a tactic? Or is this a middle finger salute, before he blows off the Broncos. Thoughts?

Mr East If you are right about Detroit offering their 1st and 20th, would you show Cutler the door if he stiffs the team on Monday? We could certainly do some real good with 3 first round choices.

  • Hansen

I’m leaving now to go see the house. If the color scheme works for me I will make an offer. I’ll let everyone know if I get it. If so everyone is welcome to come over on Sundays!

Here’s a thought: Interesting how both Detroit and Cleveland are within a 350 mile radius of Santa Claus, Indiana.

  • Jordan C

Hey look,WhidbeyBronco, somehow we got back onto another topic. Oh well.

Sadly, I’ve become indifferent about Cutler. If he stays, great. If he gets traded, oh well. The team has to get good value for him, though. If the Bengals got offered two 1st rounders for OchoCinco…I hope we get better than a 1,2,2. But that would be acceptable. I almost don’t what the Lions two 1st rounders. Would we really take Raji #1 overall? Not Aaron Curry. ILB is not a major hole.

If he goes, then I’m starting the campaign for the new Pat White era.

Downsides: He likes to run too much. He’s 6’1″. He played in the spread. He doesn’t have a psycho/fire-in-the-belly motivatinoal demeaner.

Upsides: He’s a quick learner. He’s wicked fast. He’s wicked versatile. He works hard/is dedicated. He got a “knows-what-he-wants-and-won’t-back-down” attitude a la, he has the confidence to be a QB in the NFL rather than do what everyone else say that he should. He’s stepped up to the challenge of the Senior Bowl, Combine, and Pro Day workouts and has made all the throws. I’ve heard no knocks at all from those events. McDaniel’s doesn’t shy away from using the spread. He is way, way smarter than Tavaris Jackson, but has similar skills.

Give Chris Simms a year to show what he can do while White learns the offense and returns kicks (or not, whatever).

Like I said, I’m not promoting that the Broncos trade Jay Cutler, but I don’t like any of the other QB’s in the draft, including Stafford. Who are you going to hand the reigns to, Byron Leftwich? Jeff Garcia? I really think that White is underrated at a 3rd round projection.

    New Bronco Mock:

    1. Tyson Jackson DE
    1. Trade Down then get Conner Barwin OLB (reach, maybe)
    2. Ron Brace NT
    2. Pat White QB
    3. Mike Hamlin SS
    3.Mike Mickens/Mark Parson CB
    4. Jasper Brinkley (just for you Richard) ILB
    5.Kyle Moore – underrated/overshadowed USC 3-4 DE
    5. Mike Thomas – wicked fast WR
    6. Devon Drew – blocking TE who can catch
    7. Trimane Goddard – underrated (7 int’s in 08), with a rough combine FS
    7. Roger Allen OL (credit: MHR)

That pretty much fills all the holes that I see, plus provides young depth under the teams aging positions.

Lastly, the Rocky Mountain News lives on!, sort of.

    http://www.iwantmyrocky.com/category/sports/

  • jcampb72

Richard, at this point I would take detroits 1 and 20.

  • WhidbeyBronco

Richard, ok I apologize for calling you a fair weather fan. Apparently you’re just an idiot. Nice loyalty. Cutler’s not replaced Elway but any stretch of the imagination but he’s our best chance after how many have failed? He was offended, that’s it. Is a man allowed to be offended when he believes he’s being lied to? He’s done NOTHING against our team. Not a missed ANYTHING!! Hell Elway refused flat out to play for the team that drafted him!! But in retrospect we adore him (at least I do) Why are you so loyal to this young coach who wants to act like Belichick after having done NOTHING? STUPID MAN.

I truly hope our rookie coach turns out as did his mentor
I truly hope Cutler who’s done much but has MUCH to prove (as well as his part to repair his own mishandling of this situation) turns out as well as Elway

    Together is their best chance!
You don’t see me disrespecting McDaniels because I think he’s flubbed up a bit. I like his free agent signings!

You people who dog Cutler and call him names like the little bitches you are can sure kiss his ass when he shows up and acts like the leader he is! (you’ll probably dog his every mistake though won’t you?) IDIOT!

  • Jordan C

WhidbeyBronco, make sure you stay on topic. It’s very important. Also, you might want to calm down a bit. Ulcers are no fun.

  • jcampb72

I’ll be suprised if Cutler shows up monday.

  • http://brocotalk.net (dee)

I’ll take detroit’s 1st and 20th pick, Cutler lovers read Sam Adams post on Cutler at http://www.iwantmyrocky.com/sports

IF he doesnt show up it could be his bruised vagina isnt fully healed… ya im back to being pissed,

Show up Cutler , if you truly are a man and are pissed at MCD speak to him man to man, face to face and not hiding behind your bitch Bus.

McD aint going no where , you know where to find him…

  • Jordan C

Seriously, people. I know you love your Broncos. But remember: ulcers – no fun.

  • Jordan C

People are calling for the first over all pick, so let’s hear what you would do with it. Stafford? Curry? Raji? The mike is open.

  • Hansen

    A bruised vagina? Hmmmmm, interesting.

  • jcampb72

I don’t know about you guys but if McDickwad actually traded cutler for cassel all hell would have broke loose. Now, McDoochebag has the best player on the team pissed off enough to put his house on the market and now he doesn’t even want to play for him or the broncos anymore. More than anything I got a Cutler jersey in Orange and his pro bowl on the way. Shit better get right quick!

  • http://brocotalk.net (dee)

    Hansen,
I thought I’d dish it out, since people have no trouble bashing MCD. And the bruised vagina joke was actually made by someone else, I found it slightly funny.

OK back to being serious, this quote from a NFL exec is maybe the most honest thing I’ve heard since this whole mess started, please read it Cutler lovers….

“If you can fire a Mike Shanahan, you can trade a kid like that,” an NFL source said. “Everyone is disposable in this league. And (Cutler’s) a guy who hasn’t proven a thing yet. He’s had some great statistics, but he hasn’t won a thing yet.”

    – source : http://www.nfl.com/news/story?id=09000d5d80f3ddb9&template=without-video-with-comments&confirm=true

  • http://brocotalk.net (dee)

6 Months ago what would be a bigger shock

Firing Mike Shanahan. Acheivements (2 superbowls, etc)

    or

Trading Jay Cutler. Acheivements (has the same name as a bodybuilder)

    ?

  • http://brocotalk.net (dee)

I just thought of something, even this situation is a total mess. The amount of publicity the Denver Broncos have gotten in the national media is amazing. The broncos are the team everyone is watching, even at the draft all about “what the broncos do” …. Monday all the national media will be looking at Denver and whether Cutler shows up….

I’m lovin this, we are the new Dallas Cowboys!

Soak it up guys, once this is over the national media will ignore us once again =( ….

Unless you know we win the Superbowl or something …

  • Richard

Jordan C Curry for certain, then trade for Brady Quinn. He knows McDaniel’s system by succeeding with it at Notre Dame. Gotta Love the golden domers. I would then move the 12th pick down with whomever into the lower 1st round, maybe Philly or Baltimore. Take English from Northern Illinois with 20 or Tyson Jackson from LSU and Ziggy Hood from Missou with the 28 or 29. Brace with one of 2nd rounders and to please NathanH Connor Barwin with the 2nd 2nd rounder. THanks for the props on Jasper Brinkley.

WidbeyBronco I have been posting on this site for 2 years and have had numerous discussions with many of the regulars. We don’t always agree, but we’ve always have been respectful to each other. If it makes you feel better about yourself to flame me with Ad Hominum attacks, have at it. Unfortunately, you are making yourself the fool.

  • Anthony33

Cutler put his house up for sale yesterday according to the denver post.

  • http://www.google.com T-Money

    Anthony33 –

He has 2 houses and an apartment in denver. He put one (the at castle pines) up for sale. People have reported that he was going to sell it WAY before this mess.

  • Anthony33

    T-Money
I knew he had two houses, but not that this sale was well in the works. Based on what he is asking and what he paid, it sounds more like another ploy from his jack ass agent. If you recall, Elam did the same thing a few years ago.

  • Boisebroncoguy

Go to CBS4denver.com and read their report on the house issue. It sounds like no big deal, according to them.

  • http://brocotalk.net (dee)

how about we all create a “jayfirebuscook.com” website … lol

  • kerry

oh who cares. Cutler and his poor ego are too bruised to show up Monday. i was way on Cutler’s side before but now all i hear is a whining little bitch. id send Cutler to detroit for the 1st and 20th pick in the first round in a freaking heartbeat. that or send him to the Browns for Brady Quinn and the 5th pick or Quinn and Shaun Rogers. im sick of the soap opera.

  • http://brocotalk.net (dee)

    Kerry

    me and you finally agree.
