Jay Cutler

Jay Cutler

According CBS4 Denver Jay Cutler and Josh McDaniels finally spoke, the conversation was via conference call with McDaniels and Pat Bowlen. The conversation apparently did not go smoothly. According to CBS4,

McDaniels made it clear to the quarterback how the team will be run, and how Cutler was expected to fit into that plan. McDaniels reiterated the Broncos position that they have no intention of trading Cutler, but he also made it clear that all players are being constantly evaluated and could be traded if management thinks it will make the team better.

Per CBS4, Pat Bowlen called Cutler twice last week and both of the calls went unreturned.

Well thats just great news for the Denver Broncos. Personally I don’t get why Jay can’t let this go. At this point it’s crazy to think that it’s still bothering him this much. Cutler is not the first “franchise” player to be traded or attempted to be traded, but he continually acts like it. Even Shannon Sharpe was almost traded by Mike Shanahan. I know the rest of you don’t go to work and spit in your boss’s face when he tells you something you don’t like. Cutler has no excuse for not returning Bowlen’s phone calls, after all he’s the guy who signs his checks. There is nothing good that can come out of a disgruntled quarterback. Cutler has the right to be angry but not to tear apart this franchise.

One rumor is that Cutler cancelled the meeting today and has no intent on rescheduling. Stick around for more updates as the rumors and hopefully facts/Adam Schefter reports fly in.

  • BroncosFan24

WOW! He really needs to stop acting like a 5 year old!

  • T-Money

What have we learned from listening to CBS4 whether or not it’s Reggie, Vic, or Gary. Wait for the rest of the story to develop and then jump to conclusions.

  • http://brocotalk.net (dee)

I can’t believe this, what more can the Broncos do? Cutler refused to speak with the person that signs his cheques? This is only my opinion but it seems to me that Cutler has given up on the Broncos and wants out…. He doesn’t like the new coach, the defense hasn’t been fixed, and Marshall is gone for 8 games… He wants out.

Are Cutler’s true colors coming out? Is the McD fiasco just what Cutler needed to jump ship? Blowing off the team owner is one way to get fired/traded.

  • http://brocotalk.net (dee)

I’m only giving my opinion without any other facts, that being said I may be wrong.

  • fan

trade him for anderson from cleveland he has a big arm like cutler

  • http://brocotalk.net (dee)

Nfl. com is also reporting the cbs4denver story, I’m assuming they would have at least asked Schefter to look into its validity?

  • WhidbeyBronco

We know NOTHING yet, right? I think we can assume Jay didn’t spit in anyone’s face.
“McDaniels made it clear to the quarterback how the team will be run, and how Cutler was expected to fit into that plan. McDaniels reiterated the Broncos position that they have no intention of trading Cutler, but he also made it clear that all players are being constantly evaluated and could be traded if management thinks it will make the team better.”
If this is the way it went down with no friendly “sorry for the confusion” , “just business / no offense intended” and/or “we’re not going to trade you because we like you as a player” (how about “REALLY like”?)
If it was like that… like “this is how it is, we don’t care how you feel about it…”
    Wow.
My boss is your average good kind of boss to work for. I’m very well aware that his word is law but he doesn’t feel it necessary to flaunt this. He is considerate of my pride and my feelings. If he wasn’t, I’d find another boss. Especially as I am a valuable employee and expect to be treated as such. Is this childish?

ok, let me go back to WE KNOW NOTHING
I doubt they were inconsiderate to him and visa versa. I expect these folks who really are best served by working together to preserve both of their jobs and any chance of winning in the next few years… will soon be getting along just fine.

We really are starving for drama these days eh East?

  • olen

Stir the pot . I t sells the news .Jay will stay .McD is the coach and Jay is the quarterback . If you have ever coached there is always something stirring around .

  • BroncoinVA9986

    ????????????? that’s what i have to say

  • Anthony

Cutler is starting to piss me off. Grow up you baby. Either he’s doing this because he wants a new contract or because he is just a baby. It just shows that Shanahan had no discipline whatsoever in the locker room and that Jay was free to do what he wanted , which is probably the reason why he turns the fuckin ball over so much. Jay it’s time to grow this is a business and your record is 17-20 for crying out loud.

  • Rob Bronco

So our sub .500 quarterback is still upset because the owner and head coach didn’t rush to greet him with open arms? Big surprise. If you would have asked me three months ago if Cutler should be on the trading block, I would have said, “NO WAY.” But now, with all that has happened (our 3 game skid at the end of last season, failing to make the playoffs, Cutler’s reaction to McD, Cutler’s reaction to being trade bait), I’ve changed my tune.

Pay close attention to the next few months, especially as we get closer to the draft. Expect a draft day surprise that may have Chris Simms starting at QB with a rookie QB being drafted.

  • merch22

well idk what to think, wait for schefter

  • David Kircus Made My Tuna Melt Sub

    Trade Cutler for Stafford…

  • http://myspace.com/paraleipsis jchase8410

Damn people let their emotions get in the way of good judgement. Seriously, trade a pro-bowl QB for an unproven rookie who, if you have been listening you would know, his knock is his decision making…sound familiar? I refuse to judge anyone based off of an unnamed “source close to the situation”. When I hear from McD or Cutler, I will decide how I feel then. Hypocrites on the site want to lynch Cutler, based solely on their emotions, because he has emotions of his own. Wait for the facts to come out before jumping To conclusions.

  • Hansen

Interesting article. Focusing on what McD told Cutler, (made it clear to the quarterback how the team will be run) what we see is the Belichick way – All business, take no crap from the players. Frankly, I like it and I think its needed. Say what you will about Spygate etc, this new attitude in Denver is much needed and Cutler seems to be responding in a less-than-professional way. Men rise up to such a challenge, understanding their role. Sadly, Cutler is not responding as a man. Now if he is traded I will be suspect and nervous of who takes the reins, but the boy needs to toughen up. McD mishandled this situation to a certain extent, but I like how he is establishing where he is in regards to the Broncos.

  • broncoNM

This doesnt sound like that bad of a conversation. Its the first meeting since this whole fiasco started and id imagine it would be awkward. McD reiterated that cutler will not be traded. If cutler didnt know that he would continue to be evaluated its time he heard that. Did he expect bowlen to crown him “QB for life”…I think bowlen has learned his lesson about giving employees life long contracts. It is McD’s team and he does need to make that clear. I dont think its a good idea to ignore Bowlen. Cutler may not be happy but he has to communicate with the owner. That is a guaranteed one way ticket out of town. I am a huge fan of Cutler and still think McD was taking crazy pills to even think about trading him but if this story has any truth to it and cutler is NOT over this by OTA’s (next week) I may start to reconsider Cutler’s future in denver. The first meeting between these 3 guys is done and Cutler gets a couple of days to let it pass and get it out of his head. But this needs to be over by Mar 16th.

  • BroncoinVA9986

well half the reason cutler’s record as a starter isn’t awesome is because or defense is horrible but whatever….

  • ryan

Why do we have to keep going over this? YOU HAVE TO HAVE TRUST BETWEEN HEAD COACH AND QB. McDaniels refuses to confirm or deny that he sought out trades with other teams, Cutler has a right to be pissed until McDaniels acts like a man and gets honest.

So tell me all of you who keep saying Cutler is a baby and needs to grow up; how does he move past this until McDaniels continues to lie? Where is the trust? Where is the respect. Does not matter if your NFL QB or mailman, you deserve honesty. This is not a arrogant spoiled athlete thing, its a treating other humans right thing.

  • http://BroncoTalk.net Mr.East

    WhidbeyBronco,

I don’t think I’m “desperate for drama.” You can say all you want about “what we don’t know.” The fact is what we do know is that Cutler blew off the owner of the franchise, and that is completely unacceptable. I’m not sure how you overlooked that tidbit right there.

What can you say about Cutler? He bit the hand that feeds. Bowlen signs all of his paychecks and he straight snubbed him. Cutler thinks he’s Jesus H Christ right now and that’s poison to any team. NFL.com confirmed that Cutler refused to take Bowlen’s calls till Monday, but he can sure take his money whenever he wants. I’m not saying you are but, how can you possibly stand behind a QB like that?

I think you were confusing “the boss” with McDaniels instead of Pat Bowlen. I understand your analogy of your boss respecting you and treating you as a valuable member of the team, but you don’t get payed a few million to do what you do. Professional athletes are held to a higher standard like politicians whether they like it or not.

It doesn’t matter what position you play or how many freaking Super Bowls you’ve won. If the owner calls you, you get back with him as soon as you can. The fact that Cutler wouldn’t respond to Pat Bowlen speaks about his character.

So no, I’m not desperate for drama, and we do know something. I’m just telling it like it is, and you have to agree with me in that sense.

jchase – I’m sure he’s just being sarcastic.

  • http://BroncoTalk.net Mr.East

    ryan,

You couldn’t be farther from the truth. McDaniels is progressing the team and Cutler is living in his “me first” world. Whether he means to or not Jay Cutler is tearing apart the franchise. You do not see McDaniels making childish comments to the media, but of course you just say he’s lying, where it’s having tact. Cutler is trying to act like he runs the team, and he doesn’t.

It doesn’t matter what happened 2 weeks ago it’s about the now. Cutler needs to shut the hell up and do what it takes to improve.

The fact that Cutler didn’t return Bowlen’s calls is despicable, and you cannot disagree about that.

  • Awesome, Austin

Trade cuty for anybody…I would take Grossman at this point…A little piece of my fanhood has died since this whole thing started

  • ryan

So Mr. East why not address my points instead of saying things like “its not about the past its about now.”

That is a cop-out. Tell me one healthy relationship you have in your life that does not have trust. So spare me all the “Cutler needs to be a professional” stuff. I bet if you had someone at your work who lied to you and then would not own up to it, it would have an adverse effect on your working relationship.

So as soon as you can tell me one healthy relationship you have in your life that does not have trust then I will cede my point. Until then Cutler has a right to be pissed at a guy who lied to him and does not have the decency to own up to it.

  • Dakota fan

IF, IF, IF, IF, IF, IF, IF, IF, IF, IF, IF, IF, IF, IF THIS STORY IS TRUE…..

Enough ifs? I trust the media (sports or otherwise) like I would trust Bernie Madoff with my life savings, but IF Cutler, McD, GmX and Bowlen’s conversation really went down this way, I have two points to make:

    1. Cutler is cutting his own throat. He hasn’t reached T.O.’s lofty standards of assinine behavior, but he’s starting to act like him. I don’t live in Denver, but it strikes me that (even before this mess) Cutler has a shaky reputation in the Mile High City that’s not getting any better. I can’t believe I’m saying it, but IF THIS IS TRUE (I can’t say it enough), he’s going to talk his way out of a contract, with Denver or whoever else. I love his physical gifts, but he needs to shut the hell up.

    2. Josh McDaniels is taking back this team. I thought Shanahan had a decent level of control over his players, but I’m thinking that in the last few years, he let the inmates run the asylum. I’m going to sound like an old fart, but the head coach is the man in charge. Those of you who love Cutler are going to hate hearing it, but it’s true: McDaniels is the guy Bowlen hired and he’s not going anywhere. McD needs to gain control and it starts at the top with #6.

  • JRODZ

Mr. East is right on the money with this one. This is basic management. McD is younger than 1/3 of his roster. Cutler needs to zip it and play football. He doesn’t have to like his coach. McD is systematically trying to assert & gain control of the team. That’s what he’s being paid to do. Everyone needs to fall in line to turn this thing around. My guess is the veterans might side with his tactics. I just hope Cutler sees the light and makes himself & the rest of the team champions again.

  • Roy

I am sure that the conversation would have been much different had Cutler come in or took a confrence call when it was requested of him A WEEK AGO. I don’t know about anyone else, but if I refused a request like that from my boss, you could bet your ass I would be out of a job. Maybe Cutler should go and work at a homeless shelter for awhile to put his priveledged life into perspective. I really hate it when someone takes their position in life for granted when there are so many that have to go without. A little humility goes a long way.

  • http://BroncoTalk.net Mr.East

    ryan,

Why should I address your point? You have no proof that McDaniels tried to trade Cutler. All McDaniels and Xanders have said is that they never intended trading him.

I do believe McDaniels was interested in trading Cutler and I don’t blame him for it one bit. Cutler is a player and players can be traded. Do I agree with McDaniels? No. Cutler can be miffed just like Sharpe said when he heard about his trade but he needs to get over it and win. Whether it is a dumb choice or not McDaniels can do what he wants and Cutler has no room to get angry about it, especially not in the form of not picking up Bowlen’s calls. There’s addressing your points for you.

  • Joe H.

If I didn’t answer phone calls from my boss I would be fired!! Cutler is basically an employee. His job is to be the QB of the Denver Broncos. I can’t believe Cutler is that cocky that he disrespected his boss like that!! That takes alot of balls!! He definately needs to grow up!!!

  • Roy

East, I am with you on this one. Ryan, part of a relationship is also being willing to sit down and discuss issues civily and PRIVATLY. This COMMUNICATION will allow people to move on and build trust. Being an egotistical baby is not good for anyone.

  • broncoNM

DO NOT TRADE Cutler for Anderson or Stafford or Grossman or anyone else that would make Simms the starter. A pissed off Cutler will still play 10 times better than any of these losers. Cutler needs/will play for denver this year. If we only win 2 games in ’09 then we can have this conversation a year from now. Do not trade Cutler…He is a top five QB that deserves a chance to prove it again this year.

  • ryan

Joe H. you would be fired because you are not under a contract, if you were and it did not stipulate you had to take phone calls from you boss then you would not be fired.

@Mr. East Really? I have no proof that McDaniels!? Other than Schefter, Mortenson, Williamson, Peter King and every other respectable reporter stating it. Yup, no proof at all.

Every reporter in the know has said that McDaniels got caught with his hands in the cookie jar and is now trying to deny it. Cutler was not even mad until McDaniels decided to then not own up to it.

And yes I am not refuting that McDaniels can do what he wants, he can trade Cutler for a long snapper if he wants, but this does not mean he has the right to lie about it.

So keep dodging the question of how a coach can lead a team, and instill a team first mentality when he does not practice honesty and respect?

So Mr. East you may have healthy relationships in your life that thrive on lying but I don’t have have never met others who do.

  • adam

I’m really starting to wonder if the Castle trade fell through. What if instead the Lions offered the Broncos the 1st and 20th pick in the draft? What if the Pats leaked it because they were pissed? Wouldn’t this also further explain why Castle came so cheap? Guess it doesn’t make a lot of sense to play coy if they did, but something is fishy. I suppose we’ll have clarity when OTA’s start next week.

The way Cutler is acting (and man I enjoyed him up til all this), playing for the Lions might serve him right. He may even like it, Calvin Johnson, close to Santa Clause…I’m out of advantages.

  • http://BroncoTalk.net Mr.East

    ryan,

Chris Mortenson reported it, now it must be true, ask Bob Stoops.

Not only can McDaniels do what he wants, Cutler has to be okay with it as well. Cutler was mad the whole way, don’t even try to defend him. If you want to exalt Peter King then read his report about Cutler asking for a trade. What do you think about that? Where is the trust in that relationship right there? How about when McDaniels first became the coach and Cutler blew off talking to him for a week. How is that a trustful relationship right there?

Josh McDaniels considered trading Jay Cutler and didn’t. Thats what happened. How’s that for dodging a question for you?

And don’t you bring my personal life into this. You don’t know anything about me and if you have to do that it really just shows how little you know about football. That is completely disrespectful poking fun that I have relationships that thrive on lying. Keep it to football and be respectful, something I have to tell you and Jay Cutler.

  • ryan

Get real east, my point was that there was a consensus in the facts of what happened. Go ahead and pretend like it did not but that does not change what ALL the media reported.

And no one brought your personal life into it, don’t be so sensitive. It is you who is resorting to personal attack. I was simply saying that it is consistent to for Cutler to expect honesty in his relationships since ALL humans expect it, including yourself. So cool it with “disrespectful” nonsense and trying to lecture me, your off base and over reading into things.

I am sure you are a great guy and we would probably get along great over a beer, but I fundamentally disagree with you in the idea that leadership and authority include not having to treat people with honesty. Leadership at its core is influence and you do this by getting people to buy in. So tell me how you get to a team first mindset in which everyone buys in to what the coach is selling without honesty? You don’t.

  • plato68

I back Cutler 100% he has every right to be upset. Cutler is the franchise quarterback and should be treated with respect. Mc Daniels needs to lead by example and apologize. Just my two cents

  • http://BroncoTalk.net Mr.East

    ryan,

My point is that this isn’t about our personal lives, I wasn’t being sensitve. We cannot begin to make a comparison because this is about business. The whole point of playing in the NFL is to win a Super Bowl no matter who is around you or what they do. If you are a true professional you get the job done no matter what. In 30 years Cutler will kick himself if this all leads to the demise of his career.

    Plate,

Cutler may be the face of the franchise but Pat Bowlen owns the franchise. There’s no excuse for not pick up his calls. So don’t blindly back your QB. McDaniels has nothing to apologize for, he considered trading him and then didn’t. End of story. Cutler wants to still cry and split apart the team, how is that leadership?

  • T-Money

Oh my god. Half of you cry more than cutler does. What the hell happened to Bronco Nation. CBS4 is what started this crap and now they just served you another dose. And it is NFL’s job to report ALL news whether it’s the complete truth or just part of it.

    1. Don’t trade Cutler
    2. Wait for the DENVER BRONCOS to make a statement.
    3. If anybody ever says “a person close to the source”, you should immediately throw out the validity.
    4. Stop feeding off of the media.

  • http://BroncoTalk.net Mr.East

    T “right on the” Money,

Exactly. The unfortunate thing is though that it won’t be that smooth. We’re in for a rough offseason, but I think by training camp things will get a lot better.

  • plato68

I have to admit there is some reason to your madness. Perhaps but to even entertain the idea of trading Cutler for Cassel in my opinion proves that our rookie head coach is an imbecile/ buffoon

  • T-Money

The dreaded ‘source close’ to the Jay Cutler situation strikes again….. dun na na…

  • Trda

McD has blown it from the time he hit Denver and needs to get a clue or leave NOW!. He’s not man enough to handle Cutler. It’s about a relationship, not by being a bully. Bowlen blew it even bigger by putting Xboy in as GM. Neither have a clue what they are doing and Bowlen obviously can’t figure it out either. If you thought the Broncos were bad last year, this year will be a riot.

  • BroncosTrevizo

    i want J.Cutler trade at M.Stafford!

  • plato68

No more TOMFOOLERY OR BALLYHOO Mc Daniels needs to be held accountable when excercising questionable judgment.

  • plato68

ooops accountable sorry for the mispelling

  • Mr.Frye

    hello Mr.East

  • T-Money

    BroncosTrevizo-

Why? Why would you ever want to trade a UNIQUE and DEVELOPING Quarterback… for an UNPROVEN 50/50 chance at talent?

That would be THE DUMBEST MOVE IN BRONCO HISTORY!

  • http://BroncoTalk.net Mr.East

I give up. People can stand behind Cutler’s whiny arrogant behavior.

    1) Cutler asked to be traded

    2) Other teams try to aquire Cutler but McDaniels doesn’t trade him.

    3) Cutler becomes outraged when he heard that his name was in trade talks.

    4) McDaniels says he never intended on trading Cutler.

    5) Cutler refuses to talk to Bowlen or McDaniels

McDaniels is building the team where Cutler is tearing it apart. Cutler needs to be held accountable, McDaniels has been doing his job Cutler is just complaining.

  • plato68

Is that Mc Daniels defenition of building a team. If it’s not broke dont fix it. The Mc Daniels had to go and F that up Hell Shanny would have lied.

  • plato68

All the offense needed was fine tuning once again just my opinion

  • http://BroncoTalk.net Mr.East

So 16th in the NFL in scoring when you have an offense thats 2nd in yards is just fine tuning in your opinion? I dont know about you but I’m not fine with 28 yard field goals.

It was broken at all ends of the spectrum.

McDaniels made a back up (who was sacked the most in the NFL) a star. McDaniels took a bunch of no name running backs to the 6th best run offense in the NFL.

  • T-Money

Here is another article that creates even more of a dramatic situation. It’s all spin, and this SOURCE is full of it. He probably called in from a payphone in disneyland.
