A day after the signing of J.J. Arrington apparently fell through, the Denver Broncos have made moves to address their running back opening. The team has agreed to terms with former Patriot LaMont Jordan, Josina Anderson of KDVR Fox 31 reports.

The two-year, $2.5 million deal will be signed when Jordan visits Denver soon.

Jordan spent last season in New England where he rushed 80 times for 363 yards (4.5 ypc) and four touchdowns. The ninth year pro spent his first four seasons with the New York Jets and the following three seasons with the Oakland Raiders.

I am not a LaMont Jordan fan. He always struck me as a lazy player, and ex-teammate Warren Sapp‘s comments calling him the “worst offseason running back ever” last year confirmed that to me. He had success last year, and maybe McD can get the best out of him again, but I’m not a big fan of this signing.

Thanks to Jaiu in the comments!

2 years 2.5 million! Damn! Thats cheap as hell!

Denver’s running game is definitely doing what New England’s did last year. Correll Buckhalter will be Sammy Morris, Peyton Hillis will be Kevin Faulk, Ryan Torian/Drafted RB will be Ben Jarvis-Ellis-Green, and LaMont Jordan will be LaMont Jordan.

  • orangecrush74

I have been a long time Broncos fan. I really am not feeling any of the off season moves. Regretfully, I am more excited about my hometown team whom I never rooted for in my life (Saints). L. Jordan? He is a bum. Changing personnel just for the sake of change is ridiculous. Unfortunately, Hillis will be a stud for another team.

  • Colorancher

Not a fan of Jordan. But it looks to be a good deal money wise. Hopefully he will perform. I do like Hillis and Buckhalter in the backfield.

  • Katch22

I bet Jordan doesn’t make it out of training camp. Everybody is going to step up there game this offseason.

  • http://BroncoTalk.net Mr.East

I think it’s obvious that the personnel wasn’t just changed for the sake of change. It’s more like the personnel was changed because they sucked and couldn’t get the job done. Defensive drafting was absolutely piss poor, most aren’t even in the NFL anymore. Free agency moves were duds. D-Rob was going to count 16 million against the salary cap this year… thanks Mike!

“LaMont Jordan will be LaMont Jordan” — That’s classic! very nice East! :)

Again, this is a solid, fiscally sound signing by McD/Xanders. As with their others, I have no issues with the logic of these deals we’re making and the positions we’re filling heading into the draft.

I do have a bit of a concern that we’re filling our locker room with ex-Pats, but that’s to be expected. I just hope they workout better than Shanahan’s attempt at repopulating our locker room with Cleveland Browns. :)

  • http://www.search-this.com mark

I was hoping they could get Laurence Maroney since New England clearly doesn’t care for the guy…

  • http://broncotalk.net Kyle

Maybe McDaniels adding all these ex-Pats is less about the players and their talents and more about gaining a foot (or ear) in the locker room.

Not sure how I feel about that.

  • Colorancher

    Jonathan;
You nailed it. I think all the signings thus far are good for the team. It will make some players possibly perform at a higher level knowing that they have to compete for their jobs. To me it does not matter where they came from, it is whether or not they can play for us at a top notch level.

  • http://www.broncotalk.net Jonathan Douglas

Kyle, well it doesn’t hurt to have guys familar with you to spread a little player-to-player positive spin regarding your new coach. However, Jordan just doesn’t seem the type to be all that loyal and motivated by team spirit.

    Maybe I’m wrong… it’s happened before! :)

  • http://www.search-this.com mark

New England Patriots != Cleveland Browns

Pats went 17 and 1 and then 11 and 5… If there is a team to take players from well then this is the one.

  • kerry

YAAAAAAAAAWWWWWWWWWWWWWWNNNNNNNNNN!! all these signing of ex patriots smacks of “hey ill sign my buddis from New England regardless if they suck or not, but hey they are still my buddies” Mcdaniels CLEARLY cares more for getting sub par players thinking the system will win out over actual talent. kind of like Shanahan’s defense’s over the past decade.

  • myerda00

Katch22, you are right. Remember if any of the new players do not make it to the 53, then Mc&X have spent nothing.

They have not gotten rid of a player that made any impact (maybe Scheffler on trade), so I see a lot of competition. If Jordan beats out Hillis, Torain, Boyd, or any others, so be it.

The ONLY true solid group that the Broncos have is OL.

  • Stav

I can only agree Katch22 – Jordan will not be part of this team when the season opens. I said in a different posting, Hillis needs to be given a solid shot at the starting RB. He’s too talented to be just a third down back. He’s got great hands, decent speed (certainly not breakaway), and he showed us last year that he can pick up the tough yards. I understand he had a very limited showcase, but he did average 5yds per carry. If he can put up 4.4 – 5yds per carry he’s the starter.

  • myerda00

    Forgot
Makes you really wonder what was in Arringtons contract that is not in Buckhalters or Jordans. Or any other for that fact.

  • Andpark

Stupid move. Agree with Kerry. Cheap but ultimately why is McD making us Pats West? Stoked on Buck, Hillis is the man, and my brief viewing of Torrain I was impressed (TD in first and only game) so why are we picking up such lackluster other RB’s? I call BS. McD is not on my good side lately.

  • http://BroncoTalk.net Mr.East

I don’t get why people are so down on this cheap pick up. Do I need to repeat myself?

Denver’s running game is definitely doing what New England’s did last year. This is a good thing! The Patriots were 6th in rushing behind a line that gave up the most sacks in the NFL.

Correll Buckhalter will be Sammy Morris, Peyton Hillis will be Kevin Faulk, Ryan Torian/Drafted RB will be Ben Jarvis-Ellis-Green, and LaMont Jordan will be LaMont Jordan.

There are players that will vie for these spots, competition is good. Giving starting jobs during offseason is bad!

  • Jaiu

i agree with katch22; i don’t see Jordan making it through camp. i’d like to see a healthy Torain, or Buckhalter get the start and Hillis back at FB. With his FB/RB experience and receiver hands, the Broncos would need that extra “threat” on the field, especially if they adopt the Patriots scheme of not throwing to the TE much. But ehh, that’s what Madden 10’s for.

  • kerry

    Mr East:

oh, well since you repeated yourself then we all will just agree with you right now! ppfffttt. YOU may want this team to be an exact replica of the Patriots, but alot of us are very skeptical of these moves because they smack of favoritism over actual talent.

  • http://broncotalk.net (dee)

I dont know how people can pile on guys when they haven’t even played a preseason game with the Broncos yet. Give guys a chance, this is a cheap contract and if he fails he will be cut.

  • http://broncotalk.net (dee)

    Kerry

If the Broncos win 3 superbowls in the next 5 years, you won’t care who they look like. And when it comes to picking talent I’ll trust the Patriot way as opposed to what Denver has done for the past 10 years.

  • http://BroncoTalk.net Mr.East

Yeah because thats exactly what I said, I think Denver should be like the Patriots. I want success, thats like saying screw Bill Walsh, we’re doing things our own way. Do you not understand a coaching tree? Josh McDaniels is boiling things down to X’s and O’s something you obviously don’t know about. You just relate names and schemes to teams. Thats not how it works kerri. Saying Denver is turning into a replica of the Patriots… you might as well say they’re like the Cowboys too since they’re running a 3-4. With that said Denver is also like the Chargers, 49ers, Jets, Dolphins and Browns.

If you haven’t noticed the majority of the players are not just “Patriots.” These players come from a winning environment. Defensively most of them come from a winning 3-4 environment which means experience winning a scheme new to Denver. The only defensive player s who aren’t from a winning 3-4 environment are Fields and Davis. Please take your negative spin on that.

Seriously Kerri, you’re the eternal pessimist. If Jesus came back today you’d ask him for I.D.

  • kerry

    Mr East:

jesus doesnt exsist. and what says we will win 3 SB’s in the next 5 years? because McDaniels happens to be from the Pats?? well lets see, so were Crennel, Mangini and Weis. 2 of those three were fired, one went to college and is doing a terrible job there. so just because you come from the Belichick tree, doesnt mean instant success of any measure. my pessimism has much more solid ground then your reasoning of thinking McDaniels comes from the Belichick tree so that translates into SB wins. ppfffttt. ask Mangini and Crennel how many SB wins they have, or even playoff wins for that matter. because according to you, since they come from that coaching tree, they should have had tons of success. (here is a hint, none of them had any success)

    Dee:

there is nothing to suggest a SB win will come within 5 years let alone 3 in 5 years. McDaniels isnt that good. well he is good at following the three steps in how to ruin your franchise before playing a game.

step one: try to trade your franchise QB for a glorified backup.

step two: let it get to the media you botched said trade thus pissing off your QB.

step three: publicly lie about trying to trade your franchise QB, pissing him off even further.

yeah McDaniels is off to a great start for those 3 SB’s in 5 years. ppfft.

  • http://myspace.com/paraleipsis jchase8410

I know the Denver Broncos are a proud franchise, with an even prouder fan base. They have a rich and storied history, and some fans (such as myself) don’t want to see that thrown out the window in order to be a replica. Copies rarely come out as clear as the original.
I am fine with most of the signings thus far, but a few have been questionable to say the least. I can see bringing in Gaffney as another receiving threat for 4 & 5 WR sets…familiar with the system, good pickup. However, signing your old longsnapper to a multimillion dollar contract is somewhat unnecessary in my eyes. LaMont Jordan is, and I don’t care how cheap he was, a bit frivolous. Remember you generally get what you pay for.

  • Paul

It would be nice if McDaniels were to put more emphasis on putting his own mark on this team that bring in marked ones from the Patriots regime. Is it not a coaches job to sell his system to the players he inherits? Is it not the coaches job to motivate the talent to play his way? Instruct them? Why does McDaniels feel he has to rely on bringing in the cast offs of the Pats?

That being said, I agree with jchase, I would not like to see the Broncos try to become the carbon copy of the Pats. As a life long Broncos fan, I don’t want people to think that it ok for our coaches and team to do whatever it takes to win, including cheating. I have never liked the Pats and it is not because they win all the time!!

  • DB

rediculous!!!! Lamont effing Jordan??? what the hell happened to Derrick Ward??

  • flbronc

zip a de do da. he wont live through camp. he got 5 carries a game last year.. there has to be a reason for that. hopefully mcd and gmx see that a 30 year old injury prone rb who gets 5 carries a game isnt worth a roster spot.

  • http://www.dbaumgartner.com daveb

Maybe…just maybe…McD is bringing in some of these guys because they know his system and can teach it to others…I’m just sayin’. And it’s not like most of these signings are expected to stick around long–that’s what the draft is for.

DB: What happened to Ward? Cash baby.

  • http://portal.adams.edu Ryan McBronco Fan

4.5 yds per game is productivity in my book. it’s what he had last year and he should be fresh.
2.5 mill is chump change. he understands the offense.
if that’s not a solid pick-up then you are retarded. him over j.j. arrington any day

  • broncoNM

This is a fine pick up. A cheap veteran. I see nothing wrong with creating competition. If he ends up making the team he could be a decent role player. If i had it my way i would have Buckhalter and Hillis spliting carries with Arrington as our 3rd down back. Either Torian or Jordan as depth. Jordan could be used as short yardage situations. I know this will probably be a job for hillis but i think hillis could offer more and im hoping McD notices this in camps. Young and Hall are as good as gone to me and for some reason i dont have much hope for torian.

  • Vince_Marine

Looks like we just signed JJ and Chris Simms too. That is a lot of running back to sign considering we still have Payton (#22). I hope JMac doen’t try and trade him.

  • robtink242

jordan, young, and torain are on the edge. jordan closest to fall. i still say we draft a back SHONN GREENE. the guys a complete back as well. he listed 5’11 at 227 lbs. he rushed with 1,850 yards and 20 touchdowns in 2008. we can use his talents instead old beat up vets. plus he be available between 2-4 rounds of the draft.

  • BroncoinVA9986

I think this is a crappy signing….its good to get lots of players and deals…but lamont Jordan…Damn

  • http://BroncoTalk.net Mr.East

“The Denver Broncos are not a transmogrification of the Patriots, keep in mind Mike Shanahan brought over a wealth of knowledge from Bill Walsh and George Seifert.”

When did I say that we were going to win super bowls? Seriously you have this problems with putting words in my mouth to try to make your negative point.

I never said just because he comes from the Belichick tree means he will win super bowls. Ask Mangini or Crennel? Do you even read the articles? Seriously?! I don’t think you do.

“The difference between him and the other Belichick underlings is that he was taught in that atmosphere, the rest learned at other places and used their coordinator positions primarily as stepping stones.”

Google where Crennel, and Mangini all got their roots from. You’ll see McDaniels is different, his experience comes from his father, Nick Saban, then Belichick. However we cannot predict his success, even though you think you can, AND NO I’m not saying he will be the most successful coach ever, or will even have a winning season.

Unlike you I’m not going to piss on my own shoes and yell that the sky is falling. Is there ever a time where you actually agree to something Denver does? Instead of slamming Denver what do you expect them to do, because all you say is NO NO NO but I never see a proposition roll off your tongue.

  • soxbigdog

Well.. if he’s cheap, he provides depth at running back… and we found out how important that is last season !

I just have the image in my head of him on the sidelines with the Raiders trying to eat a towel at the end of a game where the Broncos had come back to win

  • BroncoinVA9986

yea he is cheap…..yuck oh well

  • Tom9798

Home: Kansas City, Oakland, San Diego, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, New England, Dallas, N.Y. Giants
Away: Kansas City, Oakland, San Diego, Baltimore, Cincinnati, Indianapolis, Philadelphia, Washington

    Brutal schedule. . . until the free agency picks . . . I thought 9-7 at best . . . now I’m jazzed . . . . 11-5 . . . defense will be ranked in the top ten . . . . offense in the top three . . . 6-2 at home . . . . 5-3 on the road . . . . will sweep S.D. . . . claim AFC West Champions . . . will defeat wildcard in first week and defeat conference opponent for AFC Champion and win the Superbowl by four points . . .
    the Denver Broncos are going to stun the NFL! . . . . could be 12-4 . . . but I’m not quite sure about Indy away . . . . this glass is 4-5ths full . . . just remember a summa-beach told you so . . .

  • Tom9798

just a couple stats on Jay Cutler . . . our over-sensitive Q.B. . . . in 1993 John Elway threw for 4,030 yds. ( his most ever to that date) and 25 T.D.’s . . . it was his 11th yr. in the NFL . . . Jay Cutler threw for 4,526 yds. and 25 TD’s in his 3rd yr. and made the Pro-Bowl . . . and unfortunately either Q.B. during this time had crap for a defense to back him up . . .

This is going to change this year . . . not only has the offense improved with the competition at RB and the addition of Gaffney at WR . . . but we managed to steal a lightning fast defensive backfield from the Dolfin’s with Hill and Goodman . . . and an All-Pro Brian Dawkins to mentor them along with the Bailey brothers helping tudor and punch the outsides . . . also getting Reid from Indy was huge . . . . and we haven’t even gotten to the draft yet . . .

This will not be the same defense Bronco fans have endured the last three years! . . . I’ve already posted on other blogs that we will win the Superbowl next year . . . . most tired of hearing negative BS, maybe you are too . . . let’s start looking at the cup 4-5th’s full . . . . this is going to be an exciting year to come!
