An interesting tidbit nugget bombshell in Peter King‘s latest edition of MMQB regarding the Jay Cutler fiasco over the weekend – Cutler might have asked the Broncos for a trade after offensive coordinator Jeremy Bates moved on to USC.

I heard one other interesting thing Sunday: Cutler asked for a trade shortly after the Broncos lost offensive coordinator Jeremy Bates — Cutler’s confidant — to USC after the season. So maybe both sides need to go into marriage counseling here.

There are conflicting reports that Head Coach Josh McDaniels and GM Brian Xanders shopped Cutler instead of simply listening to offers. This would add some reliability to those reports.

I don’t know what to think. Either way, the Broncos brass should have never even listened to trade offers for Cutler. King is an excellent reporter; there’s no doubt he heard this from somewhere, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he needed to hear it twice before putting it to print. This fiasco keeps getting stranger and stranger; the second I think I have my head around it somewhat, even in the least, the latest report throws me for a loop. I don’t know how the Broncos and Cutler recover from this.

:( This has seriously ruined the last day and counting for me. I’m trying not to worry about it and hope that they’ll all be adults, sit down, and work this crap out. All sides could have handled things better, I don’t care who’s to blame, I just want resolution, quickly…

  • Boisebroncoguy

I can understand Jay having a “knee-jerk” reaction when Bates was let go. I think he got over it judging from interviews I saw with him after it was all over. However, I do not get shopping Jay so we could pick up Matt freaking Cassel.

  • kerry

Cutler wont be going and im gonna tell you why. there isnt anyone out there that can come in and do what Cutler did this past year, with 7 RB’s on IR. but here is the biggest thing, McDaniels should have laughed and slammed down the phone the second he heard “Cutler” and “Trade” in the same sentence. what in idiot. is anyone less enthusiastic about this season now? i know iam. Cutler wants out, Marshall arrested again, McDaniels is a Putz, so is Xanders, Bowlen is to drunk to do anything. when is it all gonna end?? if there i a single one of you who thinks we are gonna be anymore then disfunctional this year the you need meds and a padded room. McDaniels just couldnt leave well enough alone. just like Shanahan he is letting his ego get in the way. but hey thats who Bowlen wanted. another Shanahan. his words not mine.

  • Arden

What a mess…I’ve seen less drama at a slumber party.

  • KMA

    Just a quick reminder, it’s March 2nd,

Everybody just needs to chill because if any of you who say
“it’s all over” start singing the praises of MCD or GMX in September or November, I’m gonna remind you about it.

Carmelo Anthony had the best advice for Cutler…

“You got to learn that it is a business, especially with him,” said Anthony, who last summer was ultimately reassured by Nuggets exec Rex Chapman that Denver wouldn’t trade him. “(Cutler) has been the guy who they’ve been saying could be the next (John) Elway perhaps. (Trade rumors) are always a tough situation because you don’t know where it’s coming from, who’s saying it, if it’s true, if it’s false. That was my big thing this summer. Just let me know, so I can get my mind off thinking about where it’s coming from and who’s saying it and who’s not saying it.”

Cutler needs to quit whining, get in to Dove Valley, and listen to MCD and GMX tell him that he’s not going anywhere, then we can all move on.
If he keeps up the I’m going to hide for a while BS, then so be it, get the #1 pick from Detroit and start over.

  • Pat

Get over it Cutler. We want u as a bronco!!!!!! Relax man

  • TD30isMVP

I agree with NathanH, just hope they get it worked out. That being said, talks of trades are always out there and they must listen to them just as the CEO of any company needs to listen to any offer to buy the company even though it was not for sale (it’s just usually not “leaked” in the news. I love Jay and really like what the new coach has done so far, so I hope this gets worked out soon.

  • Candide

The big mistake here by Josh and crew is one of a financial nature, and a financial nature ALONE.

This is all about the Benjamins. If you are Cutler’s agent, Josh McDaniel just insured that your big payday will be much sooner than it would have been 2 years from now.

There are really only two scenarios that play out from here:

    1) The Broncos trade Jay Cutler to a new team that signs him to Manning Money, $100 million+.

    2) The Broncos re-work his contract, supposedly to soothe his bruised ego and he gets, you guessed it, Manning Money.

This could not have worked out better for Jay even if his agent has actually choreographed the entire thing.

Remember, there are no bruised egos in sports—there’s only: “Show me the money!!!!”

Think about it: If the Broncos announce sometime between now and the draft that Jay is their man and they have signed him to a new 10 year, $120 million dollar contract, with guarantees in the $50 million plus range, is Jay bruised ego gonna be OK?

    Whaddayathink?

Whatever the new contract is, he ought to send a couple percent to Bill Bellicheat for making it all possible. Did the old man (Bill) school the kid (Josh) on this one or what?

  • KMA

    Candide, Spot on!!
I’d say that about sums it up

  • T-Money

Candide makes a good point, but i have a hard time believing that alll this is accurate.

There’s WAY TO MUCH speculation and weird reporting out there. We all need to let the fire go out…let the smoke clear…and wait for the Broncos organization AND Jay give a press release.

I will say this however. If Jay leaves… This franchise is going to take a serious dive. We wont be super bowl bound for a long long time.

What a crappy way to start a Monday.

  • Colorancher

Mcdaniels is a passing offense type of coach. Why would Cutler go anywhere else. All the passing teams in the NFL already have QBs, except the Cardnals. He will stay if he knows whats best for him. As an ex college QB, he wants to pass and Denver is where he will get to do that.

  • Richard

I’ve been supportive of Cutler on this board for a while and still think he’s a good person and just a little naive about dealing with the press. Regardless of whether he was shopped or not, it was the Broncos call not his. But lets get one thing straight. His declining to show up for a “Clear the Air Meeting” is Bulls###.

I regularly manage young men in my business, and I require that they:

1 Show up on time and be ready to work.
2 Exibit some maturity(I deal with young scientists) and a degree of professionalism.
3 Understand the golden rule(he who has the gold rules)

I’ve always given them the latitude to be themselves, but they are no longer “Grad students”, and there comes a time to grow up.

I am beginning to believe that Cutler hasn’t figured out that he’s no longer the BMOC at Vanderbildt. He signed a CONTRACT, and he needs to live up to it without being a petulant child. Grow up Jay, show up and talk to your employers.

  • myerda00

Candide may be right, but IMO, NO
I do not see McDaniels and Xanders offering an extention to Cutler because he got his feelings hurt. And I hope that does not happen because that would be a quick way to lose your whole team.
I do think that we have not heard the end of this. Since Cutler may have started the ‘I want a trade’ thing and other teams know this, I see other offers coming in. But not until draft day.

Think of this, a team (TB, Chicago, Minn, Detroit) offers #1, #2, and #3 for Cutler. Do you pull the trigger?

  • broncoNM

    Candide-
I completely agree. Money fixes all. If jay gets paid this is a non issue. If the broncos dont pay him than either way he would have been out the door either now or later. This whole thing probably sped up Jay’s payday.
Man this totally ruined my weekend. I still think it might be a good idea for the broncos to make a press conference to announce that Cutler isnt going anywhere. My reasoning is because this thing may not go away and could continue to grow. There are articles and ESPN commentators wondering if the broncos still might try to deal Cutler. I understand that these are not reliable sources but an official comment from onwership might help to put this to rest. I agree with what someone else stated that Cutler should head back to denver and get this meeting over with. These guys still write his pay checks and this is working for him right now. The fans are on his side and a big payday could be on the horizon. Right now McD is the bad guy but if cutler continues to stay away and complain things might start to sway the other way. I say we sign him. Give him the big bucks. I honestly feel like Cutler has amazing talent and has all the tools to be a Championship QB. Just my opinion.

  • T-Money

You know what i find interesting. Denverbroncos.com wont touch this topic with a 10 foot pole.

  • kalberts

At what point does Bowlen step in and say, “Hey, enough fellas. Let’s hug and make up.”

On a serious note. When does he get involved and demand that this be worked out?

  • KMA

    it’s spinning out of control…..
This from the Denver Post, via ROTOWORLD…

“A league source told the Denver Post that the Vikings have expressed interest in Jay Cutler.
The Lions also remain interested, but Denver is adamant about keeping Cutler. The Broncos wouldn’t want Detroit’s No. 1 pick because of the cost and neither team can offer a QB that would make a deal feasible. The Broncos only would’ve traded Cutler if they were getting Matt Cassel in return.”

    Source: Denver Post

T-Money, I’m thinking they need to say something soon, it’s all over the internet, in the ESPN rumor pages as well.
Bill Williamson even speculates about swapping Cutler for Cassel with KC…
    Posted by ESPN.com’s Bill Williamson

    Here’s an idea:

How about a Jay Cutler-for-Matt Cassel trade?

By now, the football world knows that the Broncos were involved in talks about getting Matt Cassel from New England before the Patriots traded Tom Brady’s injury replacement to Kansas City. The Broncos’ motivation was to reunite former New England offensive coordinator and new Denver head coach Josh McDaniels and Cassel.

Then, Denver, as ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reports, may have sent Cutler to Tampa Bay.
The Broncos are now in a bind. Cassel is out of the picture and Cutler is upset that the Broncos entertained the thought of dealing him. Cutler would like Denver to deal him.

The Broncos can do one of two things: Try to mend the issue with Cutler or deal him. The problem is, Denver has no other quarterback options if it trades Cutler.

So maybe the Broncos go back to the root of the issue and offer Cutler to Kansas City for Cassel if McDaniels really would prefer Cassel. In most NFL circles, the younger, more experienced Cutler is considered a better player than Cassel.

Yes, Cassel fits the Patriots Way that McDaniels appears to be so consumed by and he runs the same system as McDaniels, but Cutler is the better player. Perhaps Chiefs general manager Scott Pioli, another Patriot disciple who also lives the Patriot Way, would see a bargain and make the swap.

After all, talents like Cutler don’t get shopped every day. Then, everyone would be happy. McDaniels gets to be back with Cassel and the Chiefs would get a very good player from one of their rivals.

Makes sense, right? But, of course, this likely won’t happen because it all so absurd.

But then, this whole saga has been absurd.

  • http://www.broncotalk.net Jonathan Douglas

    T-Money,

Yeah, after Andrew Mason left the personality of that site and ability to bring a unique transparency left as well…. It’s kinda sad, really.

  • jcampb72

The more I read the more I beggining to believe cutty needs to stop being such a premadonna. To see him pout on the sideline makes me sick, the dude needs to grow up.

  • Candide

QB is the one position that you have to have the player satisfied with the money. It’s just too easy to screw up at that position and hurt the head coach. Jay was probably quite satisfied with his contract until Friday but now that he has been dissed he knows he doesn’t have to be anymore.

What exactly can the Broncos do except to pay him or trade him. He is on record saying he wouldn’t mind being traded. And no amount of “I’m sorry” or “We really didn’t mean it” is going to cover it.

All sides know that this is a business. Only us fans are stupid enough to think otherwise. Jay will get paid the big bucks much sooner now one way or the other.

  • http://broncotalk.net Kyle

I understand where you’re coming from Candide, but I respectfully disagree. If you appease an angry player with a fat contract, you set a dangerous precedent for the rest of the team. Cutler’s contract is fair right now for all parties involved.

McD and company messed up bad – he and Xanders are both on the hot seat as far as I’m concerned – but they’re still Cutler’s employers and Cutler needs to appear to a meeting if they deem it necessary, as hard as that may be.

  • Katch22

Does anybody remember when Cut and Bates use to scream at each other during practice or in meetings? I think this is going to turn out to be similar relationship with McD. Things always have a way of working them selves out even if it’s a love hate relationship. I think cooler heads will prevail. Cut’s agent Cook was Farves agent as well right? Nothing but drama there. I am done with this situation since I think all will be good to go. What is getting me as of now is the free agents we are bring in on the D. Dawkins is great but everybody else? I’m not seeing it, what I am seeing is McD played Miami alot with NE and he thinks their secondary was outstanding? I hope he will start to address the line soon with “solid” players because that is what killed us last year and so far I’m not to impressed. AND PLEASE STOP MESSING WITH THE OFFENSE! Don’t mess with something that’s not broken. I still think the replacing Leach move was totally uncalled for, ya McD we get it you were with NE already you can stop bring in there cast offs now. 20 bucks we sign there FA FB Evans too.

  • Dakota fan

The sad part about this whole deal (for me) doesn’t involve Cutler. I’d like to consider myself a newer generation coach who understands today’s coveted athletes better, but I have little tolerance for crybaby sh*t. I love Cutler’s physical and analytical capabilities on the football field, but he’s really getting on my last nerve.

The class act football player is an endangered species. Instead of having a sit down kum-by-yah session with McD and GmX, maybe he should have a sit down, shut up and listen with Brian Dawkins or Karl Mecklenberg or Champ Bailey. These guys do (or did) play football balls to the wall and don’t (didn’t) play a game of media tag to make some grand point. I’ve had it with this crap, even though it’s not going to end today.

The Super Bowl champs of the last several years (Patriots, Giants, Steelers, Colts) don’t have issues like this because the owner/coaching staff) doesn’t allow it. The coaches and Bowlen need to set the precedent right now if they want to make something of this team in the next several years to come.

I’m behind Cutler if he decides to grow up a little and not let his little feelings get hurt. If not, get rid of his ass and get someone who has the intestinal fortitude to play quarterback and win championships in the NFL.

  • http://www.search-this.com mark

I think Cutler needs to grow up – It’s not Show-friends it’s Show BUSINESS..

  • soxbigdog

Well.. to a point this lets the broncos brain trust off the hook ‘a little’, if the story is true…

Now they are just a messy soap opera where no is lying and no one is telling the truth

  • Andpark

Let’s just say I am very happy that the pre season doesn’t start til Aug. Hopefully time heals all wounds and McD and Cutler can get some sort of understanding. Again lots of great moves regardless, shame all this Cutler stuff had to happen.

  • http://myspace.com/paraleipsis jchase8410

So all of you who have employees working under you, let me ask you this. Is it fair for you to have a mandatory meeting with an employee while he is on vacation? Is he supposed to drop what he is doing and run back while “off the clock”? Jay isn’t even in Denver, and this is still the off-season ana Jay’s vacation time. How is it fair that his employers call him into a meeting she
N he isn’t even in town? Seriously?

  • http://broncotalk.net Kyle

jchase: If you’re making millions, and it’s an emergency, yes. Get back as soon as you can.

Plus his “vacation” lasts months. Every year. Us normal folk get a one-week break every other year or something. ;)

  • http://broncotalk.net Joe

Wow guys, you really have to watch the videos and stuff of espn (I know they are full of shit and everything) but now its gettin’ wild. Everything is bashing cutler now. They are all saying that he needs to grow up and get over this. They say that this is a trade that never happened, and he is acting as of it did. They are all personally bashing Cutler now. Maybe this will get his ass to Denver. I love Jay Cutler. He is my favorite player on the team, by far. I want nothing more than just for him to come back to Denver and be happy. I hope he does. He is the man

  • http://www.dbaumgartner.com daveb

jchase8410 – I’d say it’s more than fair when you are whining to the media ever chance you get. Obviously not on much of a “vacation” if he’s got that kind of time. He either needs to sit down with them or shut up (ok…he should do both).

  • Dakota fan

Gene Wojciechowski wrote a great article on ESPN today in regards to this whole situation. I know ESPN is on the hated list by most Broncos fans, but I agree wholeheartedly with his assessment.

He pointed out Derrick Brooks’ statement on being cut by the Bucs last week after being with them for 14 years. Brooks said, “Everybody has a picture that they want painted their own particular way, but when the picture’s not painted your way, you don’t kick and scream. You be a man about it.”

    Anytime now, Jay- anytime.

  • Vince_Marine

There goes our great offseason!!! All of the great pickups we made through free agency are now being overshadowed by Cutler and Marshall, the supposed leaders of this team. These two need to grow up fast, and get on board. This team is headed for great things and they are going to be left out if they don’t stop the non-sense!!!

  • jcampb72

Espn’s dogging on cutty hard. “stop whining about a trade that never happened” “you haven’t won anything yet” “bad character” are just a few. Now it looks like Cutty’s only choice is to shrug it off. He doesn’t sound like a NFL QB, he sounds like my kid sister when were in the car for too long.

  • J

I love Jay but he needs to shut up and be a man! I am starting to think that we SHOULD trade him! Is he ever gonna play as hard as before now that he almost got traded is he care if we win or lose? I am hearing the Lions are still interested lets trade him for the #1 pick and start over! Lets roll the dice on Matt Stafford and take it from there.

  • http://broncotalk.net Kyle

Gene Wojciechowski is a freaking moron. That piece is self-serving and contrived. His conclusion is, “Jay Cutler has pretty passing numbers, but so what?” SO WHAT? Are you kidding me? That’s the entire point of this whole dilemma!! Jeebus!

  • Katch22

Does anybody know anything about Ward yet???

  • jvill

    Ug, enough with the whining.

Teams call this time of year. We have no idea what was said, or even how long the conversation lasted. As a business person, I’m always willing to listen to what someone has to say, even if I know no way in heck am I going to give them what they are asking for. That’s how you uncover opportunity.

And what’s King’s point here, other than throwing more fuel on a fire that was dying out?

Remember, this is also the man that said Robert Gallery was going to be awesome, and followed around Brett Favre like a little lost puppy. Bus Cook was also Favre’s agent, and he did a bang-up job damaging two other franchises. This is just messy and spreading more rumors and innuendo ain’t gonna help.

  • Candide

    @Kyle

As Hyman Roth said in the Godfather: “This is the business we’ve chosen”

Jay knows that. Josh knows that. You make mistakes, and you get whacked. If a player does not perform up to expectations in the NFL, you fire him and you donn’y have to pay anymore of the contract (except the guaranteed part). In the NFL contracts are not guaranteed because the union (unlike basebal and basketball) wasn’t strong enough to get that in labor contract.

On the converse, Josh McDaniels blew it, publicly. It’s going to cost his owner a whole lot more money whether he trades Jay or not. “That is the business he has chosen.”

  • http://fanzak.com James

this jay cutler mess is ridiculous
    http://fanzak.com/fzrants/Does_the_NFL_stand_for_

  • bz

Yes I love Cutler and think that it was stupid that they even attempted to trade him or whatever happened. Even if they just listened very inently. At the same time he needs to grow up. To say no to your boss when he asks to have a meeting. Jay we all love you…take the advice of Melo and realize it was strictly business and move on. At least listen to McDaniels…

  • http://myspace.com/paraleipsis jchase8410

I understand that Kyle, but I really don’t see this as an Emergency. I guess it could be. This is really my first comment on this while debaucle. I am trying to ride out the waves so to speak. I don’t believe anything I read that isn’t directly from the person(s) involved. So, until this meeting that Bus Cook says was never scheduled actually happens, I am reserving judgement. I have my own theory as to what may have taken place derived from what I have read, but again, I am not going to point the blame or change my opinion on anyone. It is a lot like Phil Jackson not wanting to coach Kobe, but they both got over it enough to Dominate the western conference.
It appears to me that TB and or Detroit called about a possible trade for Cutler, to which McD said, “if you can get me Cassel I would consider it.” that way everyone who has reported it can be right. The broncos didn’t initiate the trade talks, but did actively shop Jay at the same time…but who knows? Just speculation on my part. I’m not mad at anyone until I know all the facts.

  • juice

I think that if these rumors continue to escalate – which that is all they are – rumors… We will soon hear that Philly is interested in shipping McNabb to the Broncs for Cutler… I know it wont happen, but it will be the next RUMOR… McNabb has worn out his welcome and Cutler has just set his on fire… and “sources” will say that Dawkins and Buckhalter have “reached out to Donovan” – My point is that there is an OBVIOUS appetite out there for these rumors and these websites need to feed the hunger and they wont let it just die.

  • T-Money

    Kyle…

I think it’s time for a create-a-caption. There is way to much sarrow, pity, and anger in this locker room! It’s time to lighten the mood…

  • http://broncotalk.net Joe

Quick note: Jason Taylor just got released. Anyone think we should go after him now that Canty is gone? More leadership…

  • Vince_Marine

This is a great read!!! AMEN to this article!!! Cutler is not bigger than the Broncos!!!
    http://myespn.go.com/s/conversations/show/story/3946294

Joe, Jason Taylor wouldn’t play 3-4 DE, but has expressed interest in OLB. I’d like it.

  • BroncoinVA9986

Why would PETER KING only put out this info now…….Why not when he heard the story….sounds like a jay clayton story to me

  • BroncoinVA9986

atleast things dont suck on Madden 09.

  • inrodwetrust

Wisdom can come from experience, after Jay gets torched by the media and his peers he may realize:

    1) never listen to “throw you under the Bus Cook” or the media, who are only boiling this pot for their own gain.

    2) you lose teammate and fan respect the instant you show ZERO class

    3) if you are the role model for every diabetic kid in the country, you don’t act like your in their grade.

  • Mark

To Pat Bowlen – Fire McDaniels – 1) He’s obviously a horrible judge of talent (Cutler is better than Elway at year 3 & better than Cassel will ever be & 2) he has no integrity – what player will ever trust him – perhaps something picked-up in New England – From a ling-time Bronco Fan since the orange crush days
