DawkinsBrian Dawkins, safety of the Philadelphia Eagles for the past 13 years, has signed with the Denver Broncos, Mike Florio of SportingNews.com reports. Dawkins is both a quality player and quality leader that will pay huge dividends to this rebuilding Broncos defense.

We’re waiting for confirmation from another source, but until then we’re running with this. This is easily the biggest signing of the day. What do you all think?

Thanks to Ben in the comments!

Kerry relax, I know you are excited about Dawkins coming to Denver, have patience he will sign in due time …

  • Eagles Fan

You got a great player. Dawkins is my favorite Eagle of all time. I might actually consider getting a Dawkins broncos jersey. I’m just glad he didn’t end up with the cowboys or the giants. I can’t stand them…

  • Richard

KKFN reported that Dawkins has arrived in Denver with his whole family for dinner with McD and will talk contract after dinner. It hasn’t happened yet, but, you think they may be in the real estate market here soon?

  • Brittany T

    the broncos dont deserve dawkins
    rip eagles

  • buz killington

you guys are screwed. All you have now is a bunch of old men ready for the nursing home to root for. Dawkins was the man for us (Eagle fan here BTW), but he is missing a few steps now and he will be responsible for giving up the big plays when it counts now. Dawkins is a hall of famer, but can no longer play at that level anymore. He is like that babe you dated back in school who now looks repulsive and you are embarassed to even try to convince your peers that she was once hot. The Eagles know what they are doing and I predict he will be cut at the end of the season and he will sign with the Eagles just so he can retire an Eagle. Good luck with your geriatric team guys; you are going to need it.LOL

  • T

The Baltimore Sun reported that ray Lewis prefered Denver to Dallas or the Jets. They say it’s because he has a good relationship with Denver’s new D/C Mike Nolan

  • kerry

Nfl.com hasnt reported a Dawkins signing. only a visit.

  • http://merlinofchaos.livejournal.com E. Halsey Miles

Schefter says the Dawkins deal is NOT done but it is close.

  • kerry

i been saying that all day!!!!

  • NathanH

I heard Schefter said it’s pretty much a done deal. Just not officially “signed” yet.

I’m so happy about this. I say bust ass now to get Ray Lewis. And than DE, NT, and CB in terms of best available with the first 3 picks and we’re set imo. Guys like Dawkins and Lewis bring invaluable leadership and demand the best out of their teammates every play. Guy’s like Bart Scott went undrafted to probowl do to influences from guys like them. Do it Broncos.

And guys, if we sign Ray Lewis, PLEASE stop with the Malauga talk…PLEASE.

  • kerry

were about to sign Andra Davis, the MLb from Cleveland. so right there the Maualuga talk should stop!!!!!

  • Jon Krause

cool, but he’s like 35? he’s still got some left in the tank…
we should have kept Lynch longer! :( him and Brian…just imagine!

dawkins could be awesome… we need a good MLB too, like the Brown guy

  • Hannibal Casanova

We should all know that football is a business first and foremost. Dawk unders that he is nothing but a commodity to be sold around as a business product. So why are we so emotionally surprised? He will continue to make big money for the next two years. Business!

  • CJ

Kerry where did you get your info on andre davis?

  • Marv

what happened to Julius peppers guys

  • kerry

    CJ:

i got my info from the Denver Post

    Marv:

Julius Peppers was franchised 2 weeks ago.

  • Dakota fan

I said the same thing as a lot of you on another thread earlier today, that I won’t believe Dawkins is a Bronco until it’s reported by someone like John Clayton or Adam Schefter.

I just listened to Donovan McNabb comment on Dawkins- if the Broncos don’t strike a deal with him before he leaves town, I have to believe he’ll stay in Philly. Sounds like the Philly fans (a few that I’ve seen on here) really love the guy.

Speaking of good sources- I’ve seen a few of you mention some pro football websites that give some great info. Can someone put their favorite 2 or 3 on a post so I have a few new websites to go to while I’m at work? I mean, while I’m enjoying down time at home?

  • Dakota fan

NathanH- Check the author of the guy who posted it. It’s the same guy who posted it on the Sporting News link all day. Wait until he’s visited and had supper with McD and Schefter says it’s so. I’m not calling you a liar- I’m just being VERY (maybe overly) cautiously optimistic.

  • Dakota fan

I meant wait until Dawkins has visited. If you have supper with McD, congratulations!!

  • kerry

    Nathan h:

no disrespect but Mike Florio posted that. Florio is an idiot who always jumps the gun on football reportings and is a known Broncohater. hates Shanahan too. he runs Profootballtalk.com. so take what he says with a grain of salt. Florio is a putz to say the least.

  • kerry

id also like to add Florio is a FU**ING R-TARD!! and a Giants lover who doesnt know his ass from a hole in the ground.

  • broncos24

broncos should sign tank johnson and ray lewis and then get b.j in the draft and then we have a solid defense.

  • Jason

I think until I see it here:

    http://blogs.nfl.com/category/adam-schefter/?icampaign=DW_free_agency_friday

    I won’t believe it.

  • MikeY55

man i really hope we dont sign andra davis…

  • CJ

The Fox affiliate in Philly is also reporting that Dawk signed with the Broncs. I would post the link, but the stupid iPhone doesn’t have a copy/paste function. It says they contacted a second source in Denver to confirm it.

  • http://broncotalk.net Joe

So what the hell do we believe? Is he signed or what

  • Dee

I’d also like to see us try and pursue Jermaine Phillips(Bucs) SS

  • Jpweave

Guys, Dawkin’s has agreed to the terms of a deal and wil sign the contract tomorrow at a press confrence.

    My Source: ESPN

  • Den

A 35 year old safety, great. They were riding him out of town in Philly, until they stopped dropping him in coverage. He plays at the line of scrimmage, and was key to the Eagles defensive because he knew the timing so well. Lack of experience, and his aging speed will expose his weaknesses. If you don’t believe me break the tapes down. Further, when did the Eagles 30 somethings become a high priority for us Broncos? Not as excited as everyone else.

  • http://broncotalk.net Ben

Jpweave read the rest of it it says espn refutes the report.

  • Eagles Insider

This is unreliable information yes dawkins did go to meet with denver but nothing is official yet. the eagles have a little something up their sleeve.

  • NathanH

To the people complaining about Dawkins’ age, who would you have rather of signed in free agency or drafted that would have been as good for the next 2 years. And its not even about how good he plays, its about how good he makes everyone else play every play because of his intensity.

He’s a great leader that demands respect, and will make any rookie we draft work that much harder, which I love. I know he’s slower now and gets beat over the top more often that we’d all like, but he’s a great tackler, that helps against the run immensly. He also is great at forcing fumbles. Who’s the last guy we had that forces any type of turnovers at the saftey position? I’m pumped, its a great stop game at saftey for 2 years(hopefully) and we can draft a saftey this year or next to be mentored by Dawkins.

We have so many holes to fill, and with the signing of Dawkins, it allows us to push aside saftey til next years draft if we don’t see “that guy”, and use our picks to fill out the front 7.

  • tyler

It’s about time denver made a move on a huge player. we also need him to be that leader on the field . this is a great move. 1 step closer to the championship

  • http://BroncoTalk.net Mr.East

Denver is starting from scratch, and it would be great to have someone around who knows what defensive success looks like. Brian Dawkins is true leader, just listen to his speeches they pump you the hell up. Depending on how much they give him makes this a smart move. I believe he still has some miles left in his tank.

    buzz killington –
The average age of a bronco player is around 25. Geriatric? I don’t think so. Inexperienced is more like it.

  • T-Money

I would like to have a good mix of young and old. You need some or so leadership of a defense. If we put out 11 rookies like everybody wants, we’ll make last year look like the orange crush days. Some maturity and experience is a good thing despite he age.

  • http://broncotalk.net Joe

Cassell has been traded to the chiefs…….fuck

  • CJ

I really hope this mystery team comes out and gets him cuz i dont want to hear him crushing us for years to come. And does anybody no when this confrence is supposed to start for brian dawkins?????

  • http://broncotalk.net Joe

    Adam Schefter
Dawkins signs five-year deal with Broncos
Posted: February 28th, 2009 | Adam Schefter | Tags: Brian Dawkins, Denver Broncos, Philadelphia Eagles

Denver signs free agent safety Brian Dawkins to a five-year, $17 million deal that includes $7.2 million guaranteed. The contract also has escalators that could boost the value of the deal to $27 million over five years, but the deal also could be voided to two years, $9 million.

  • # 20 will be missed in philly

Congrats denver fans you got the best thing that happen to the eagles …. they messed it up for themselves …. u got a man that will come to work everyday … enjoy it … he will bring a spark to your D like no other ….. get excited his energy alone …. will have u going …. me and a lot of other people in this city are gonna be watchin the broncos a lot more …. there is nothing up the eagles sleeves …. they do not know how to treat players that come to work to win ….. no respect …

  • Randy

i would just like to say i am a die hard eagles fan who is very jealous of the denver fans right now. you guys really need to consider yourselfs very lucky to have signed someone like dawkins.. i have gone to see a few eagles games and there is nothing more exciting then watching dawkins lead the fans in singing the fight song after a touchdown, ther is nothing more exciting then when he comes out of the tunnel and is being introduced and listening to the whole stadium go nutz. you have also signed a great running back in buckhaltor i have watched him for years and he was way under used in philly and he hads a great back to your back field… looks like i might have to become a denver fan, all i can say is ill be one of the first to buy a dawkins broncos jersey and since denver comes to philly this year i will actually be routing on the broncos.. congrats to all the denver fans and broncos oganization you have taken the heart and soul out of philly

  • die hard eagles fan

this is by far the most stupid thing the eagles have ever done…dawking is by far the best safety in the nfl and hes been the heart and soul of the eagles for 13 seasons! the broncos just made the best deal by far of all the free agents, he was the one to get. u guys might have a shot this year with dawkins leading ur defense. good luck broncos, wish the eagles all the luck, were gonna need it

  • Jpweave

Hey Ben they may refute the report but the contract was already worked out and it happened just how i said it would so okay bud.

  • hpelle

brian dawkins brings leadership, experience, the fact that he gives his all, and that he follows through and doesn’t give up. the broncos got one of our best. in fact, i just might start watching the broncos as i’ve got nothing left to watch the eagles for.

  • V

A philly fan here and to say that you guys got our heart is an understatement. I dont care how old his legs are, if youve got the pulse of the team and the fans you pay the man…although denver went out of their way with the huge contract, you can never put a price on HEART..I’m youre biggest fan and wish you the best..Thanks for giving it all you got and leaving it all on the field and being a great roll model for all young players coming into the league…To say that youre nothing but class and a great athlete would be an understatement. You play football like I played ball and your upe there with the Lambert’s and the Ditka’s and Lott’s greatest d-players and with montana’s and rice’s and walter payton’s Greatest of All Time.. Best of Luck…

  • billy smith
