As Katch22 mentioned in the comments to the last post, Defensive Coordinator Mike Nolan is most recently from the 49ers and may be looking back at that group for possible suggestions for upgrades this free agency season.

So, here is a look at the ESPN list of free agents from SF:

Billy Bajema TE
Tully Banta-Cain LB (Released)
Damane Duckett DT
Ronald Fields DT
DeShaun Foster RB
Roderick Green LB
Bryant Johnson WR
Keith Lewis FS (Released)
Jamie Martin QB
J.T. O’Sullivan QB
Allen Rossum CB
Sean Ryan TE
Takeo Spikes LB
Donald Strickland CB

What do you think about this crew? Anyone here strike your fancy? Any upgrades at our Defensive Positions?

  • KMA

I could see maybe O’sullivan coming in as a #2 QB, maybe even a Donald Strickland

  • KMA

    “maybe even a Donald Strickland”
    at CB I meant

  • Ryan M.

I like Rossum’s speed, but he’s not the greatest of players.

  • Katch22

Maybe B Johnson, depth once again. Spikes might fit the bill with McD & X having a demand for decent but cheaper players, he has some gas left in the tank looking at his 2008 stats. The more I look at Spikes the more interested I become. Does anybody know how his relationship with Nolan is? Him and DJ in the middle would make a good duo and then we could look at other options in the draft.

  • kerry

i wouldnt pick up a single one of those bums from San Fran.

  • merc22

spikes would save us a draft pick and would like to sign a 3yr deal, and then release him after this year. I want denver to get spikes,Igor Ishansky, and chris canty

  • charlie

how about JVILMA?? him and dj in the middle elvis and jarvy on the outside

  • kerry

    Charlie:

Vilma hated the 3-4 in NewYork so he wont come here to play here in a 3-4 either.

  • charlie

im sure dj could talk him into it…

  • Richard

The 49ers are a crappy team and these guys aren’t good enough to play for them, how could they help us.

By the way, We need to understand that Johnathan Vilma had a great rookie season for the Jets a long time ago. He was a very good mike LB that year. He FAILED miserably when they went to a 3-4 D and also had a serious knee injury. He is now a name, not a player. There isn’t anything he could do to help the Broncos, and it amazes me that he still gets buzz from some of the posters. Theres too much good talent in the draft to worry about an old, diminished football player.

  • charlie

richard – good point….we need to trade champ asap!!!

  • Richard

Charlie I would rather keep Champ and trade down to 20-25 or so. We would get 2 more picks, one in the 2nd, and probably another in the 4th. That gives us 6 choices in the first 4 rounds. And if NathanH is correct about Canty wanting a 5 yr 50mil contract with 18mil up front, I’d rather have a shot at some of the better Dlinemen available in the 2nd through 4th rounds like: Ziggy Hood from Missou, Ron Brace from BC, Jarron Gilbert from San Jose St, Dorrell Scott from Clemson, and maybe even Alex Magee from Purdue. In a later round we could take Sammie Lee Hill from Stillman. Oh, and we get English from Northern Illinois in the first.

I put some Banta-Cain on a rash I had once.

    Cleared it right up.

  • steve

the only one even worth considering is takeo spikes. the rest of these chumps are not deserving of orange and blue

  • Roy

I couuld see Banta-Cain and Spikes both getting interviews if Nolan recommends them. They are by no means a permanent solution, but they could be decent stop-gaps for now.

  • http://broncomadness.com Garrett Barnes

Spikes would be nice temporarily as he used to be a star but I just couldn’t take him seriously long term.

  • dc

notable draft picks other than the usual suspects for the 3-4
    Jarron Gilbert 6’5 288
    Chris Baker 6’2 326
    Rashon Harris 6’4 298
    Sammie lee Hill 6’4 330
    dude from Iowa King smthng
    Tyson Jackson 6’4 295
    Terrance Knighton 6’3 321
    Khalif Mitchell 6’5 318
    Zach Porter 6’7 280

  • OC Bronco

Richard – I agree with you. trade down not up and keep Champ!
I have seen some of the hype around Jarron Gilbert and I’m buying. I don’t know if he is a 2nd or 3rd rounder but I like the film I’ve seen (of course ESPN shows his most promising work).

  • Richard

Hercules Banta-Cain doesn’t help if your hanging at biker bars.

dc people need to look up Gilbert hes going to be a player and should be available in the 4th.

Dude from Iowa is Mitch King and I think he could be converted into a MONSTER strong inside lb.

its Zach Potter(like Harry you know) from Nebraska, and I agree could be a good 3-4 DE. Think Carriker that went to St. Louis.

Also add Dorrell Scott, I know, I keep lobbying for him but it seems the bandwagon hasn’t started yet. Hes big(6’4″ 312 lbs.) has great hands(including a really great swim move) and was an Outland nominee. Not his fault Clemson had an off year. Could be an excellent mid round End and a backup Nose. C’mon guys look this kid up.

  • da boogyman

I feel sorry for you mr orange and blue. The truth is anybody in the N.F.L is good enough to be in any color uniform. Just because you think that way does not mean its true. You can not call yourself a N.F.L football fan if you can badmouth and player for trying there best. As for the Broncos {orange and blue} I would love to see them in the superbowl again but not more then any other team. Football is football, players are players, its the true spirit of the N.F.L that you should love. Also not a real good Idea to bad mouth a 279 pound football player who by the way makes more money in 16 games then you will in 10 to 15 years.

  • http://broncotalk.net Joe

Ok guy, check this. I just read and heard that Shaun Rogers wants out of Cleveland. Yes, the same guy that we came sooo close to signing before Detroit changed their minds. What if Denver traded for him? Or just sign him as a free agent if they cut him? (He wants to be released). That would be badass. He is a monster.

  • inrodwetrust

Think Mike Singletary still has it? Aside from Frank Gore he is about the only current 49er I would want to see as a Bronco. I bet Mike would be a better MLB than Nate Webster even in his 60’s.

  • Roy

inrod—I disagree. Besides Gore, I would also take Patrick Willis. That dude is a BEAST!!!

  • Richard

Joe I’d have to think long and hard about Shaun Rogers. Recalling McDs Albiet canned answer about smart, tough, etc.,etc, etc, good character(boy scout oath optional). Shaun is definitely a character, but I don’t believe it is in the sense McD means it. Of course if it helps us win and its the only choice left we’ll have to consider him.

  • pwsbronco

We don’t even need to waste our time on any of these guy. None of them is an upgrade to the players we got rid of. Take this off of all discussions…..man, can’t believe I even read this. Guess I can’t wait until friday….passing time, what a waste…….

  • http://myspace.com/paraleipsis jchase8410

I would like to see Igor Olshansky in the predominately orange and blue this season. Let’s not forget that his D-line coach is now in Denver. I don’t really want to see anyone from a terrible SF team. O’Sullivan would be an ok backup QB to have around though.

  • NathanH

Spikes is still a good player and allows versatitity having played productively on the outside and inside of a 3-4 before. If we could get him for the right price, I say jump on it.

I too heard about Shaun Rodgers. I say go after it. Hopefully for a 4th or they cut him and we have a shot to sign him. He’s a prototype 3-4, and allows us to take a high upside prospect like Sammie Lee Hill(who’s stock is rising hard right now).

  • Pat

I got news for some Bronco fans. You have a crappy team, too, so you may be taking in players from other crappy teams. It doesn’t mean those players can’t fit.

Plus, the Broncos special teams were awful. Someone like Keith lewis would help cure a terrible unit.

  • steve

speaking of nebraska, what about that kid Sue? anybody watch him against clemson? or against CU for that matter. I think he’d make a good 3-4 DE.

  • NathanH

Pat, we have a crappy D…not team.

Anyways, we don’t need stars, we just need to scout right for guys that will fit into our system. It wasn’t long ago James Harrison was a special teams player.

Also, there is a lot of value in the later rounds and hopefully we can get lucky and land some future stars late(again).

  • Jordan C

    Steve –

I don’t think the Broncos should sign “A Boy Named Sue”. Just sayin’.

  • http://mrherculesrockefeller.blogspot.com hercules rockefeller
  • broncobobmeridian

i was just checking out an article from yahoo sports, ranking the top free agents of 2009, and there wasnt one ex- bronco on list. Just goes to show what type of talent we had in 2008.

  • http://myspace.com/paraleipsis jchase8410

Herc, I don’t care what he said three years ago after a cheap shot. He is a quality guy according to my source, and he is a monster who plays his position well. All players say stupid things from time to time, that’s no reason to not pursue them for our team

  • merc22

we only need Igor, and then vetern LB’s who know the 3-4, and this Defense will be fine. I think bell gets the job at CB

  • broncoNM

Dolphins signed gibril wilson to a 5 yr deal.

  • Katch22

Well there goes one of my FA to the fish! I hope S Bell get’s away from them so we can pursue him. I still think S Brown released from the Bears would be a good pickup…….

  • conductormann

I had high hopes for Gibril Wilson in orange and blue. Jermaine Phillips is too pricey, but does a James Sanders, Sean Jones, or James Butler give us what we need? I’m sensing that Xanders would have targeted Wilson had his office not been wrapped up in securing Bly’s replacement.

  • broncoNM

i too had gibril on my FA list but im still pulling for leonhard or j sanders at the safety position. gibril was not available for long.

  • http://myspace.com/paraleipsis jchase8410

How did they sign him before the free agency period began?

  • http://myspace.com/paraleipsis jchase8410

    nm, he was released…I’m dumb

  • http://myspace.com/paraleipsis jchase8410

I know this is a free agency thread, but I would love. To see the Broncos draft Pat White. We are in need of a backup for Jay, and he would fill the need for a solid #3 receiver. It would kill 2 birds with one stone, and only take 1 mid round pick. A golden scenario if I have ever seen one.

  • Jordan C

Matt Mosley at ESPN is reporting that Bart Scott is close to re-signing with Baltimore. That may mean that Ray Lewis is out. Dallas is reportedly not interested. I see other teams interested as the Pats and the Jets. Maybe the Chargers or the Chiefs, but they like to draft guys.

Mosley thinks there’s a chance that Lewis will want to play for his former DC in Nolan. I’m sure Nolan would love to have him. Now that the competition is limited, do you guys really see Ray Lewis coming to Denver? Do you want him? I do – if the price is right.

I like the Pat White drafting idea.

I also think that Shaun Rogers would be a bad fit for Denver, unfortunately. Mike Nolan is not known for his good chemistry with his players and Rogers is reportedly wanting to leave because he got snubbed by Mangini.

  • Roy

Gibril, as many know, has signed with Miami. Which means Denver did not want him, because I think (& I could be wrong) we have a higher waiver priority than Miami. Maybe it’s because his contract was too high. At any rate, there goes that.

  • Jordan C

What’s really interesting to me about Gibril Wilson going to play for the Dophins is that he’s moving to FS.

I thought that Sean Jones only played SS, which he did in Cleveland. But if he’s healed up, I really like the idea of pairing this ball hawk (14 picks in 3 years) with James Sanders at the safety positions. Then draft a CB in round 2 or 3 and then hopefully the backfield is set.

  • Jordan C

    Forgot all about

    Foxworth!

I had assumed he’d been signed. I’d love to see him back in Denver. He’s got the intelligence and versatility that McD will be looking for.

  • conductormann

I love the Pat White idea. Kinda like when Rod Smith was our #3 QB. Still, with the demands of the practice schedule, he could only get reps at one position. A back-up QB who only practices at WR wouldn’t exactly let you sleep well at night.

  • Jordan C

Did nobody get the Johnny Cash reference? Or did nobody care…? Ouch.

  • http://broncotalk.net (dee)

Free Agency opens in 3 hours …. a report from SD suggests denver may be players in the haynesworth sweepstakes … more to come when I get the source.

  • http://broncotalk.net (dee)

*Correction… the report is out of houston … Im digging for more details
