It is painful to think that it is only February and the draft is in April. Therefore all of the draft junkies like to imagine what might take place come draft day. I decided I would take part in this time honored tradition. This mock draft is wonderful because what mock draft isn’t? It is also horrible due to the fact that we are so far away from knowing the final decisions. I was debating whether I would wait for the combine to edit this draft, but luckily for you readers I decided to release this version and update after the combine. UPDATED: 02/19/09

Round 1

  1. Detroit Lions
    Matthew Stafford, QB, Georgia
  2. Jim Schwartz must have a lot of guts to take this job and to take an unpolished rookie QB with the first overall pick. However, rookie QBs sell tickets and jerseys, which is something Detroit hasn’t experienced in awhile. The Lions have so many concerns to address that whatever they choose will provide an instant improvement. Even if the Lions address the QB need through free agency it would benefit Stafford to sit out his first year and watch a veteran.

  3. St. Louis Rams
    Michael Crabtree, WR, Texas Tech
  4. Marc Bulger has been sacked 126 times over the past three seasons. This doesn’t help the fact that he’s 31 years old. Michael Crabtree is the best player available on the draft board at this position. Kudos to Walt from WalterFootball for shaking up the mock draft world with this choice. This pick will be very similar to Detroit taking Calvin Johnson or Minnesota taking Adrian Peterson. I do agree with taking the best player available on the board (much like the Steelers do), however, I believe that St. Louis should take Tackle Eugene Monroe, or possibly even Jason Smith.

  5. Kansas City Chiefs
    Mark Sanchez, QB, USC
  6. Once again, this pick is due to the theory of taking the best player available. Tyler Thigpen played above and beyond his expectations, which would lead one to think Kansas would address their ailing defensive line. However, Thigpen hasn’t proved himself completely and the new offensive minded coach Todd Haley will look to create QB competition (given he liked fellow USC QB Matt Leinart while in Arizona). I do not think Sanchez is the best player available. Sanchez will struggle if made starter come week one Kansas City would be better off taking Aaron Curry or even Brian Orakpo seeing how they only got the QB 10 times.

  7.  Seattle Seahawks
    Eugene Monroe, T, Virgnia
  8. If St. Louis took Crabtree, and the Chiefs claimed Sanchez, Eugene Monroe will fall into Seattle’s lap. I’m sure Matt Hasselbeck would love to have a dynamic receiver like Crabtree (or even a receiver at all), but at 33 he’d also like having a great tackle to keep him on his feet. Hasselbeck only started 7 games in 2008 and was sacked 19 times, averaging 2.7 sacks allowed a game. Receivers can be gained in FA and in later rounds.

  9. Cleveland Browns
    Aaron Curry, ILB, Wake Forest
  10. Mike Mayock is very high on Aaron Curry, and Mayock is a great evaluator of talent. Cleveland needs help nearly everywhere on the defense and with Andra Davis going into free agency, Curry could step in immediately. This is a crucial draft for the Browns, they are only a few defensive fills away from a potential winning season. However, this is the Browns… anything could happen.

  11. Cincinnati Bengals
    Andre Smith, T, Alabama
  12. This pick makes sense for many reasons. Carson Palmer needs a lot of help in so many ways and Cincinnati loves players with character issues. I think that the Bengals would be better off taking a player like B.J. Raji but depending on the combine and offseason moves this pick is very likely to change.

  13. Oakland Raiders
    Jeremy Maclin, WR, Missouri
  14. Al Davis loves 40 times like Denver fanboys love Wesley Woodyard. Maclin is explosive, impressive, and down right fun to watch. Al Davis will have a hard time passing this receiver up. JaMarcus Russell needs a lot of help and receiver is one of those spots. Al Davis would be better off taking the blind side Michael Oher or Baylor’s finest Jason Smith, but they don’t run 4.3 40’s.

  15. Jacksonville Jaguars
    Michael Oher, T, Mississippi
  16. Jacksonville needs an offensive tackle if they want to keep David Garrard alive. Depending on how Jason Smith compares to Oher this pick could change. There is no doubt Jacksonville needs a to grab an offensive tackle in this draft and Michael Oher is a great prospect.

  17. Green Bay Packers
    B.J. Raji, NT, Boston College
  18. With the hiring of Dom Capers Green bay will switch the 3-4. There isn’t a set NT yet on the defensive line. Even if Green Bay thinks they can fill it in with another player passing up on Raji would be ridiculous with a switch to a new system. Raji will be an offensive line’s kryptonite. Another player that could fall into this spot is Malcolm Jenkins with the aging of Charles Woodson.

  19.  San Francisco 49ers
    Jason Smith, T, Baylor
  20. It doesn’t matter who the 49ers start at quarterback because he’ll spend a lot of time eating the turf behind their current line. Mike Mayock has Jason Smith at the top of his list for offensive linemen, so look out for Smith at the combine. If Jason Smith falls this far San Fran would be foolish to pass him up.

  21.  Buffalo Bills
    Brian Orakpo, DE/OLB, Texas
  22. The Bills have many holes to fill in defensively. The top defensive players on the board at this point are Brian Orakpo, Everette Brown, and Malcolm Jenkins. Last year Buffalo drafted Leodis McKelvin so it makes sense for them to draft a solid pass rusher. The Bills only managed to tally 24 sacks on the year, so they basically had a DeMarcus Ware. This pick will be more clear when the combine is over.

  23.  Denver Broncos
    Everette Brown, DE/OLB, Florida State
  24. Where to begin? Denver’s defense is absolutely atrocious. Everette Brown has the potential to be an instant starter in Denver at a much needed position. Some think Jarvis Moss could be a good fit at OLB, but he is just as unproven in that position in the NFL as Brown is. Even with the release of Dre’ Bly don’t look for Denver to draft a corner because it’s not as essential to have shutdown corners in the 3-4.

One theory is that any defensive position Denver drafts is an improvement, which is true to a point. The question is what should Denver do to optimize the improvement with their 1st round pick? Right now I believe Brown is the ideal choice for Denver, but come April there will be a different story. Between the combine, all the players that will continue to be released, and the free agents that will be acquired Denver will be in a completely different place. Brown is a talented player, but this selection may only be possible with the Raiders not selecting one of the premier offensive tackles of this first round. The only other player on the board at pick 12 that would fulfill that spot’s potential is Knowshon Moreno. If Denver doesn’t want to address the running back position, Brown, or Rey Maualuga then trading down would be a wise decision.

Brian Xanders said himself that there would be a chance that Denver would be acquiring more draft picks which could mean two picks in the second round. If I had it my way Denver would select Clay Matthews and Ron Brace in the second round. However, I believe that Matthews will rise into the first round after the combine. I would expect some big name player on the Denver defense to be traded if Denver doesn’t want to trade down.

  25.  Washington Redskins
    Michael Johnson, DE, Georgia Tech
  26. The Redskins looked really solid at the start of the season, at one point they were in first in the NFC East only to finish last. At the end of the season Redskins ranked 4th in the NFL for yards allowed a game (288.8 yards), but only 28th in the NFL in sacks (24 total). Demetric Evans (a free agent this offseason) is great against the run but only mediocre at getting to the passer. If Washington wants to compete in the QB heavy NFC East they’ll need a guy who can cause havoc in the backfield. Johnson’s stock may fall at the combine, so this pick might change to Peria Jerry, who I expect to have a great performance.

  27. New Orleans Saints
    Chris Wells, RB, Ohio State
  28. Can Reggie Bush ever stay healthy? Can he run between the tackles, or are we destined to watch him catch the screen pass? There might be a reason why Drew Brees threw for over 5,000 yards this season, the only capable backs were Pierre Thomas and Mike Bell. Another possibility would be Tyson Jackson so New Orleans could finally register a decent amount of sacks.

  29.  Houston Texans
    Malcom Jenkins, CB, Ohio State
  30. Houston would love to stop the pass for once. Now with the potential departure of Dunta Robinson the secondary needs to be addressed more than ever. If Malcolm Jenkins falls this far down Houston will rejoice.

  31.  San Diego Chargers
    Tyson Jackson, DE, LSU
  32. Does anyone else find it ridiculous that the Chargers went to the divisional round of the playoffs and get to pick before non-playoff teams? Apparently that San Diego defense wasn’t all that it was cracked up to be and adding Tyson Jackson should be a smart decision if Igor Olshansky leaves in free agency. Don’t be surprised if San Diego takes Knowshon Moreno if he’s still on the board.

  33.  New York Jets
    Vontae Davis, CB, Illinois
  34. Vernon Gholston did not work out very well last year, so I don’t see the Jets spending first round money on an OLB. Expect the Jets to patch up their 29th ranked passing defense. Vontae Davis may have character issues but his talent is hard to pass up when your corners aren’t doing their job.

  35.  Chicago Bears
    Alphonso Smith, CB, Wake Forest
  36. The Chicago Bears are famous for their defense, but they fell violently short this season. Opposing quarterbacks torched the Bears averaging 234.5 yards a game. Therefore the Bears definitely need improve the secondary. Some may think this is too high for Smith but he will impress at the combine.

  37.  Tampa Bay Buccaneers
    Knowshon Moreno, RB, Georgia
  38. Tampa Bay can’t afford to trust the health of Cadillac Williams, and the Earnest Graham, Warrick Dunn tadem was very ineffective. It’s a shame to let Moreno fall this low but it will mean great things for the Buccaneer backfield.

  39.  Detroit Lions
    Eben Britton, T, Arizona
  40. Congratulations Detroit, you drafted a QB with your number one pick… now protect him! Eben Britton is considered to be one of the best offensive tackles on the board at this spot. If Detroit knows anything about football they should protect the sanctity of their QB whether young or old.

  41.  Philadelphia Eagles
    Duke Robinson, G, Oklahoma
  42. The bigger guys always crowd up on the Philadelphia’s offensive line… I mean just take a look at Jon Runyan and Tra Thomas (free agent). It is no secret that their offensive line is aging and needs whatever they can get, and Duke Robinson is the top offensive lineman on the board.

  43. Minnesota Vikings
    Peria Jerry, DT, Ole Miss
  44. Much like the Eagles offensive line the Minnesota defensive line could use some youth. Both Kevin Williams and Pat Williams aren’t getting any younger and Peria Jerry at pick 23 is a steal. Look out for Jerry at the combine, his stock will rise.

  45.  New England Patriots
    Larry English, DE/OLB, NIU
  46. With Mike Vrabel getting up there in age, Larry English could be a great addition to New England’s 3-4 defense. English is the ideal OLB in the 3-4 scheme. If English is all he’s cracked up to be then the Patriots’ linebacking core will be one to reckon with come the 2009 season.

  47.  Atlanta Falcons
    Brandon Pettigrew, TE, Oklahoma State
  48. Brandon Pettigrew is obviously the top tight end of this draft, but tight ends should not be taken so high in the first round. At pick 24 Pettigrew is a great choice to compliment Matt Ryan’s passing game.

  49. Miami Dolphins
    Brian Cushing, ILB, USC
  50. Brian Cushing has the versatility to play any linebacking spot in any scheme, though his best spot is considered ILB in a   3-4. The Dolphins don’t really have playmaker at inside linebacker and Cushing is their best opportunity at this position to fill this spot by week one.

  51. Baltimore Ravens
    Alex Mack, C, California
  52. With the release of Chris McCallister Baltimore stated their desire to resign Ray Lewis and Terrell Suggs. With Jason Brown headed into free agency it will be hard for them to retain him with the other big names. I had D.J. Moore in this spot earlier, but Mack is a hard player to pass up on. One can also argue that a receiver will be taken such as Percy Harvin or Hakeem Nicks.

  53. Indianapolis Colts
    Hakeem Nicks, WR, UNC
  54. I spent a lot of time panning out the options at this pick. It was between Alex Mack or Nicks. Yes, the Colts drafted Mike Pollack last year but he mainly played time as a right guard. Jamey Richard didn’t fill the shoes of Jeff Saturday, who’s going into free agency. Expect the Colts to address the center position, whether it is in the draft or not. With the aging/expected departure of Reggie Wayne a receiver has a good chance of landing here.

  55. Philadelphia Eagles
    Rey Maualuga ILB, USC
  56. Critics believe that Rey Maualuga won’t fall this far. They may be right, but I believe that Maualuga isn’t as versatile as Cushing and will not have a great combine. Maualuga will have a good combine, and he will put up numbers that were expected of him leading people to say that he’s a beast. Matt McGuire at WalterFootball wrote a great article about this in his blog. Anyways, Maualuga is a great prospect at ILB and the Eagles aren’t exactly stacked at that position.

  57. New York Giants
    James Laurinaitis, ILB, Ohio State
  58. Staying at Ohio State for another year obviously hurt Laurinaitis’ draft stock. There is no doubt that Laurinaitis is a natural football player and athlete. The real question is his playmaker ability, his capacity to be an elite ILB in the NFL. The Giants need help at ILB badly and Laurinaitis at pick 29 is a good time address it. Antonio Pierce has seen his best of days and I don’t think Giants fans are comfortable with seeing Chase Blackburn becoming a starter.

  59. Tennessee Titans
    D.J. Moore, CB, Vanderbilt
  60. Either Tennessee is really lucky or a lot better at drafting than everyone thought last season. Rookie players like Chris Johnson and Cortland Finnegan highly contributed to the Titans 13-3 record and playoff appearance. Some mock drafts will have Percy Harvin here, but I don’t see Harvin as 1st round material (even though I saw him win 5 races at my high school track state championship) and everyone says the Titans don’t draft receivers this high. Moore’s draft stock is rising and after the combine he will squeeze his way into a low first round choice. If Alex Mack is on the board here Tennessee may opt to take him seeing how Kevin Mawae is 38.

  61. Arizona Cardinals
    LeSean McCoy, RB, Pittsburgh
  62. Edgerin James wants out of town and tippy toe Tim Hightower won’t exactly get it done down after down. McCoy has proven to the world in the last two years that he can get it done. McCoy has averaged 4.8 yards carry in the past two seasons and he has gained 549 yards receiving in his career as well. The Cardinals can’t afford solely rely on their passing game next year, just ask Mike Shanahan.

  63.  Pittsburgh Steelers
    Max Unger, C, Oregon
  64. Do the Pittsburgh Steelers hate Big Ben? Yes. They stick good old Ben behind a line of amateurs and hope he stays alive. Max Unger is the logical choice seeing how the Steelers need all the help they can get at offensive line, but they always take the best player available. This pick is completely useless to predict as of now. Who would have guessed that Pittsburgh chose Rashard Mendenhall and Limas Sweed last year?

Thats all of round one. After the combine check back to see the updated version. I’m not sure if I’m ballsy enough to explore a complete round two but I’ll let be known that Ron Brace would be my choice for Denver. Air out out readers! Let me know what you love and I know you’ll let me hear what you hate.

  • Richard

Jordan C I agree that theres more good OLB prospects than ILB guys in this draft. So what we few, we proud, we broncotalk posters need to do is think outside the box and review which DE/OLB guys might fit in the middle. Two that may fit the bill are: 1) Clint Sintim could be a real find in the SILB position, hes listed as a Sam OLB in a 4-3but has played Mike as well, and 2) AAron Kampman and Jason Babineaux both started at Iowa as linebackers. This years draft has another in DE Mitch King. He’s described as non stop, agressive, smart, quick, etc. He started as an ILB. Can we say Tedy Bruschi? He, by the way, played DE at Arizona.

  • NathanH

Wow, I never thought of Mitch King playing ILB at the next level, but I’ve watched him play quite a bit and I think you may be on to something. The only problem with it that I see is that I’ve heard he could go as high as the 2nd, and would we be willing to take a guy that would be asked to take on a lot and possibly take 2-3 years before he sees starting time with a 2nd or even 3rd? If he was some how there in the 4th i’d love to try something like that with him though.

What do you guys think about these ILB’s expected to go somewhere outside of the 1st if we didn’t take one already:

    Darry Beckwith(pretty impressive and athletic)
Scott McKillop(Led the nation in tackle pg, only seen him once though)
Gerald McRath(I really want some more info on this guy-In 3 seasons he had 386 tackles, 32.5 for a loss, 8 sacks, and 6 forced fumbles.)

Anybody else got there eyes on some sleepers in the mid rounds?

  • Jon Krause

I would fall on the floor and laugh, and cry, and then laugh again if the Lions take Crabtree :)

That would be soooo funny. It’s really not that unlikely. Roy, Calvin…
    lol

  • kerry

    jchase8410:

yeah i can tell you where the bashing comes from, you say guys like Polomalu, Tatupu and Seau. ok Seau was drafted over 20 years ago so that is irrelavant. look at guys like Leinart, Bush, Winston Justice are all bums. plenty of USC flops that everyone had overhyped just because they play for USC. and ill go a step further and alot of the bashing coes from the fact that EVERY SINGLE YEAR people watch the Rose Bowl and just proclaim we HAVE TO HAVE this certain player. last year Illinois played USC and everybody screamed for Rashard Mendenhall, before that hundreds screamed that we just HAD to trade up for Reggie Bush and so on and so on. alot of USC players are formed in Pete Carolls system and flop in the NFL. id take a division 2 football player over a USC athlete anyday of the week. big difference between football players and athletes trying to play football.

  • Richard

    Nathan H

Darry Beckwith is 6’1″ 233. Size wise he’s Woodyard, we already have that guy. Played Will and some Mike in a 4-3. We already have that guy in DJ Williams. Is weak in coverage, and has trouble diengaging from blocks. Nice player but doesn’t help us.

Scott McKillip better size than Beckwith, has excellent insticts and techniques, good at covering TEs. Needs to improve strength in upper body. He could help us. A couple months with Rich Tuten would be just what the DR. ordered.

Gerald McRath good intincts ,young, undersized. Not a fit in what we’re trying to do. A project if you want him in later rounds.-

The reason I’m thinking Jasper Brinkley or maybe a Mitch King is because we don’t have any of those guys and they would bring something to the party. Speed and Finnesse are good things to have on a football field, but one thing lacking on our D has been size and power. We really need both.

  • NathanH

I completely agree with the size and power part. Thanks for the info.

How bout some of these mid round safteys?

    Chip Vaugh
    Brandon Underwood
    Kevin Ellison

And what do you guys think of Rashad Jennings of Liberty? This guy runs crazy quick for his size. Look him up on Youtube. I’d use a 3rd on him in a heart beat, maybe even a 2nd. I would never use a 1st on RB though .

  • Stav

Completely agree on Rb issue, they have too many needs to waste a #12 on RB. If any of those four can actually wrap up and tackle then they are already better than anyone who started at safety for us last year.

  • Richard

Nathan H I Haven’t really looked at safeties yet. I have been concentrating on Dline and Linebackers so far. But cheer up, I’m home from work with a broken left hand. I don’t have much to do and I’ll eventually get to the safety position. My only real problem is my typing is rather slow and painful.(As are my Posts)

  • http://www.CosmicWeather.com Kelly from Carolina

Sounds like Josh McDaniels knows exactly who he wants from his combine interview at NFL.com:

    http://www.nfl.com/videos?videoId=09000d5d80ed6ec5

I’m really psyched to see how they put this team back together!

  • Jchase8410

Wow, Kerry…come on now. I’m pretty sure I put in CAPS “DEFENSIVE” Player. Secondly, I’m nor sure I would call Reggie Bush a bum. I seem to remember him scoring on us twice this year, which I know isn’t saying much with our defense. However, he is a playmaker, whether it is catching a screen pass, returning punts, whatever. Maybe he doesn’t excel running between the tackles, but neither does, say, Sproles, but he tears teams up. Leinart is playing behind a future HOF QB in Kurt Warner, so we’ll see with him. If we were talking about picking Mark Sanchez, this would be a completely different discussion.

  • Patrick

Reggie Bush isn’t a running back. Lets talk running backs. Everywhere I read the trendy pick amongst Broncos faithful this year seems to be Knowshon Moreno. I haven’t seen one person picking Beanie Wells and the Broncos to meet at the altar. Mr. East Himself just picked Beanie before Knowshon, my question, Broncos faithful, IS WHY NOT BEANIE?

  • OC Bronco

We definitely don’t need a RB in the First Round. Our scheme doesn’t call for it (not that it wouldn’t be nice) but let’s face it, we need to and we will focus on defense.
And the USC bashing is ridiculous! More than half of all players are busts, first rounders included and no more from USC than anywhere else. I will agree that a player’s draft stock seems to rise after an awesome bowl performace (a la Jarvis Moss) and I still don’t understand how talent evaluators keep making that mistake.
Getting back to RB’s, there will be excellent ones available in the 2nd-3rd rounds. Beanie Wells could be available, Shonn Greene (Iowa) is an absolute beast and there will always be the lesser known backs that go undrafted or late (TD).

  • http://brocotalk.net (dee)

Hello my follow broncomaniac’s … I just read the article from RMN saying J Moss (my boy) will be switch to an pass rushing outside linebacker … To me it makes sense hes 6’6 260 … however what doesnt make sense to me is converting Dumervil into an OLB as well … hes 5’10?

  • Jordan C

    Harrison is 5’11”

  • T

Beanie is a weanie… Sure his physical stats look great but, he’s soft. If you want a RB thats first inline for the trainer then he’s your guy

  • http://brocotalk.net (dee)

Jordan C – really? wow I was trying to look up other outside linebackers I saw some that were about 6’1. I know that Shaun “I wear panties” Phillips was 6’3 … I didnt consider Harrison? I wonder if the weight difference is close …. Doom is like 250? I guess Harrison might be a tad heavier.

  • Jchase8410

In my mock that I had posted a while back, I had the broncos taking raji in the first, shonn Greene in the second, louis delmas in the third, and I had mitch king with one of our 5th round picks.

  • jcampb72

trade to 18-22 and get MLB laraunitus….then shonn greene and ron brace or a Safety.

  • NathanH

Gibril Wilson was realeased by the Raiders today. I hope we consider him. He had 120+ tackles and was good at getting to the ball. We could really use a tackler like him in the secondary.

  • broncoNM

NathanH… I liked your first 2 suggestions of Jim Leonhard or James Sanders. The few times i watched the ravens Leonhard seem to be everywhere making plays. I know he was surrounded by alot of talent but i still see him as a nice addition. Doubt the ravens would let him go tho. Leonhard is listed about 20 lbs lighter than wilson and sanders but i wouldnt have know it by watching him play. That guy can lay a lick. Dont get me wrong Gibril would still be a great upgrade at safety but i would prefer leonhard or sanders. Nothing wrong with too many viable options. Any of these guys would be better than the M&M duo of last year.

  • http://myspace.com/paraleipsis jchase8410

I really like Gibril Wilson. He would be a good addition

  • MikeY55

how about gibril anddd james sanders… leonards okay but dewan landry thes starter there before he got hurt if all goes good on hisrecovery he probably takes the spot back… if leonard sanders are available take sanders for our FS and gibril at strong we definatloy got enough cash for both sanders for one isn’t considered a very high up there FA and gibril just got cut by the faiders so thats gotta cut ur price tag down a bit

  • Jordan C

I was hoping for Gibril Wilson last year. I’m hoping again this year.

  • Myle High

I putting down my prediction for the free agency/draft right now. I say in free agency Broncos at the very least pick up Dominique Foxworth and Channing Crowder. Foxworth was a decent CB and I think McDaniels has more respect for his character than Shanahan did. In the draft 1st round will be Rey Maualugu (whether we trade down for him or not) and in the 2nd round… Patrick Chung. Then with all hope next year in the draft the Broncos find a way to take Taylor Mays. With Chung and Mays as our safety tandem it will be in the same realm as Dennis Smith/Steve Atwater. In addition to being great defensive backs if they have the same ability to stuff the run as Smith and Atwater than we could have a great defense for years to come.

  • Richard

Jordan C Does Gibril Wilson play free or strong?

  • http://brocotalk.net (dee)

Does Gibril has the speed and hard hitting power that we need in the safety positon , I’m still curious on what Barrett will be able to provide us. He’s a big safety and has the speed , and also has some ball skills as we saw in the Carolina game… maybe being an apprentice for a year will allow him to progress further

  • http://brocotalk.net (dee)

On a side note , every time I see a picture of D-Will I’m reminded of how much I miss seeing him play , the loss of him had a huge impact on the Broncos not only on the field but also with the teammate that was lost.

RIP D- Will , I remember the pick you ran back against the Raiders , I remember you picking off Rivers against the Chargers and taking it for 6 … I remember the heart you showed on the field …Players come and players go, but Bronco Fans will never forget you …

  • NathanH

dee, if your asking if he has the size and speed for saftey, he does for SS, but probably not for FS as he’s not great in man coverage at all. He finished 9th in the NFL in tackles and was the only non-lb of the top 10.

Remember how many long runs we gave up last year? That was mostly because our safties were amongst the worst in the league. It’d be nice to have a tackler like Gibril if we could match him with a ball hawk FS.

  • Jordan C

I agree about Wilson being a SS. I also agree/hope for the development of J Barrett. Rather than get a long term free safety, I like the idea of signing Brian Dawkins to a two year contract to mentor/provide leadership. He might still be available, right?

  • Jordan C

I really like the idea of Champ, Wilson, Dawkins, and Macho Harris/DJ Moore in the secondary. Or give Jack Williams or Josh Bell a shot.

McD said they will play 3-4 some of the time, it looks like they can possibly get most of the positions filled. And if they can, I think you’ll see them commit to the scheme very soon. It all depends on free agency.

  • Mike

Champ is going to be traded foer 2 draft picks. If you’re starting from the ground up, then start from the ground up.

  • Jordan C

I saw them trading Champ before they cut Bly, but now I’m not so sure. Could still see it, though.

  • NathanH

If Champs gonna restructure his contract like I heard, than were not gonna be trading him. I think that was an indicator that he’s staying.

And Jordon C, The Eagles will likely re-sign Dawkins. No one has played more games for their franchise than Dawkins and I heard he wants to retire there and they want him back as well.

  • Richard

Mike Champ isn’t going to be traded, Period. If he was it would already have happened, and they would have kept(ugh!) Bly. Would be really stupid thing to do. So far I haven’t detected anything stupid from our new brain trust.

JordanC Wilson at strong would be nice, but have you looked at Sean Jones from Cleveland? Could be HOT! By the way, even if we pick up Wilson or anyone else, we still need two Free safeties, since Barrett is a strong. One from the draft, one from FA. I’d be interested in your thoughts.

Ok people, to some of you this may sound very dumb. When draft time comes, and if BJ Raji gets taken by Green Bay or anyone before us, I would not mind getting Knowshon Moreno. I know our defense is the issue for this team, but I feel that we are going to do a lot in FA. Our runningback situation is not any prettier than our defense though. Yes we have Hillis (he’s the man), Torain, and Young. Everyone else is going to be a free agent. Hillis is definitley a plus, Young needs to go, and no one knows anything about Torain, because he is always hurt. There is always something wrong with him. And after watching Moreno run his forty and such, he would definitley be a plus to our offense. Our one-two punch could consist of him and Hillis. We wont cut Torain, but we will bring him in gradually. He is coming off a torn ACL. Moreno is a bigass dude with some speed (4.55). He could be our first and second down back, than Hillis will pound the ball on the third downs. Than with all of our picks after that, we go pure defense. I feel that besides Raji, he would be the only rookie to come in and have a true impact on our team as a rookie. He reminds me of an Adrian Peterson. What do you guys all think about this idea?

  • http://BroncoTalk.net Mr.East

Richard, I wouldn’t be to sure about that. I’m not saying he will be traded but they’res always that possibility.

I agree with you about Sean Jones, he has a lot of potential but he has a hard time staying healthy and consistent

  • http://BroncoTalk.net Mr.East

    Joe –

I completely agree. Knowshown Moreno is an elite prospect who is flying under the radar due to the lack of RB need. The only player right now I’m okay with Denver taking at 12 (who hasn’t fallen drastically) is Knowshon Moreno. He will turn around Denver’s underachieving and inconsistent offense. I’m glad someone else thinks the same.

  • NathanH

Joe, given our O-line and RB coach have stayed, I’d much rather go after the next TD, Mike Anderson, Clinton Portis, etc and get someone outside of the 1st round that’ll be a star.

Rashad Jennings of Liberty is currently soaring up the draft boards and could be there in the 2nd if Beanie or Know start to drop. Think Brandon Jacobs.

  • http://broncotalk.net Joe

    Mr. Eeast –

Ya I definitley see him helping out our offense. Especially in the TOP area, as well as the red zone. He is a big back who could really put some punishment on the defenders. If we can get him and our running game again, Denver’s number 2 ranked offense could easily turn into the number one offense in the NFL. We need that TOP badly, and thats when he can contribute. And having a player of his status on the team could really help Jay. With a good running game, Jay could be even more outstanding. The opposing defenses can’t just prepapre for the pass all the time, as they did last year. And look how well Jay did with that going on. ProBowl. Imagine if we had that running game?? Less picks, more touchdown passes.

  • Jordan C

I’ll have mixed feelings about taking Moreno. If the defense wasn’t such a mess, I’d be all about it.

I thought Barrett played free safety. If he does play strong, then I’d be less interested in Wilson, but not disappointed if they do sign him.

Free safety, to me, is a game changing position and needs real leadership. In the draft, I only like the top two or three prospects in Jenkins, Delmas, and Rashad Johnson. Outside of Dawkins, there’s not anybody else worth looking at in FA.

I honestly don’t know much about Sean Jones. I read, though, that he stayed relatively healthy until last year. If he can prove that he’s fully recovered from last year, then great – go get him. I like Wilson more, though, maybe just because I know more about him.

Over the next week, I’m curious about two things: Jenkin’s 40 time and his potential at free safety and the Baltimore linebacker situation. If the Broncos can a chance to sign Bart Scott, and they do, then I’ll stop all this talk about Rey Maualuga. But if not…

  • NathanH

I really like Delmas. He has great leadership and is a ball hawk. He’s overagressive at times, but hopefully the coaching staff at the next level can work that out for him. If William Moore some how drops to our 2nd pick too, I’d be possibly interested in him.

Some mid round guys i wanted your guys’ opinions on:

Worrell Williams-ILB(a little undersized but all over the place on every play)
Terrance Taylor(beasted at the combine, maybe worth a 6th or 7th)-NT
    Vance Walker-DE
    Roy Miller-DE/DT
    Chip Vaughn-SS

Any one seen a lot of any of these guys?

  • http://BroncoTalk.net Mr.East

I’ve seen a lot on Vance Walker and Terrance Taylor and trust me they will not be around come 6 or 7. Walterfootball has Taylor going to Denver in the 3rd round and Vance Walker going to Dallas in the 4th. I’m not sold on Worrell Williams yet, but I cant wait to watch him at the combine.

  • NathanH

I knew Walker would be gone by than, but they were saying on NFL networks coverage of the combine that Taylor, despite his freakish strength, likely won’t be picked before the 6th. They were knocking his ability to pass rush at all, mostly nitpicking really. I was suprised as I had seen him on Walterfootballs mock as well. Maybe he doesn’t interview well or something we don’t know and can’t see the measurables on. I think the guy has a lot of potential though, and could be money for depth at NT.

  • Richard

Mr. East My feeling and that’s all any of us has to go on, is that the demolition of the roster is complete and champ stays especially because of his interception against New England in ’05. No way McD has forgotten about that one, it broke the Pats back.

NathanH Terrance Taylor isn’t that hot a prospect. If he interests you, may I suggest Dorrell Scott from Clemson, a better larger player available in the same mid rounds as taylor. And another kid that has me drooling is Jarron Gilbert DE from San Jose St. He needs to put on about 10-15 lbs., but if we give him a signing bonus, we also give him a gift certificate to McDonalds. This kid can play, and theres a utube video of him jumping out of a pool that show A LOT of Burst.

Worrell Williams is good, but has the same knocks as his older brother DJ. He is all instinct and has little football iq. He is a big, strong MLB who makes plays, maybe worth a 5th, or 6th round pick

  • Jordan C

I haven’t seen Taylor, but I’ve read that he’s big and takes up space, but lacks motor/motivation and pass rushing skills, as was already pointed out. Interestingly enough, I’ve read that the scouting report was similar for Gabe Watson, who’s been talked about a lot. It turns out that both played at Michigan. Coincidence? I think not. Seriously, though, Taylor is probably a good mid- to late-round developmental project.

From what I’m reading about Scott, it looks like he’s not quite big enough to play nose tackle. ESPN’s got him listed at just 308. Gilbert is being projected at 3-4 DE or 4-3 DT. I haven’t heard anybody put him as NT. He’s looking to be about 280-290.

  • Jordan C

In fact, Walterfootball lists combine weigh ins as: Scott at 312, Gilbert at 288, and Taylor at 306! Much lighter for Taylor than I expected.

  • Richard

Scott is 6’4″, a few weeks in the weight room and a gift certificate to the golden corral buffett will solve the weight problem. Taylor is 6’0′-6’1″ and is probably as big as he’s going to get. Gilbert is 6’6″ and is definitely a DE prospect, I’m sorry if I didn’t make that clear in a previous post. He has amazingly strong legs with great balance, and very good hands. If he’s 288 lbs. now hes put on 7 lbs since December. He’s headed in the right direction.

as per usual i don’t have much to say but i wanted the 100th comment.

Quick question, consensus seems to be that this pick should be a defender – so how many prospective defensive starters have to be signed in free agency for beenie or knowshon to be the logical pick?

I’d say 4 or 5. Safety, Linebacker and two linemen. Another linebacker clinches it.
