As news of the Broncos hiring Josh McDaniels as Head Coach continues to hit the streets late Sunday night, one thing is still uncertain – who will be the team’s next defensive coordinator?

In the few hours following the news breaking, three separate reports state that McDaniels will hire three different coaches as defensive coordinator.

Adam Schefter of NFL.com reports that former 49ers Head Coach Mike Nolan has locked up the gig. Nolan spent 1987-1992 with the Broncos as linebackers coach before serving as defensive coordinator for several teams.

Meanwhile, the Rocky Mountain News reports that two Broncos players have been told that former Texans and Panthers Head Coach Dom Capers will be the new DC. The Denver Post confirms that Capers will receive “strong consideration” for the position.

Earlier, ESPN reported that Philadelphia Eagles secondary coach Sean McDermott was McDaniels’ guy, but has since removed any references of him (here’s PFT’s story).

Who to believe? When in doubt, trust Schefter, although the RMN’s sources are obviously convincing. Nolan had a lot of success as Ravens defensive coordinator before struggling as Head Coach in San Francisco. Either way, we won’t know for sure until tomorrow or Tuesday – the McDaniels hiring still isn’t even confirmed by the Broncos themselves! Expect a news conference soon and some answers to go along with it.

It’s the Dawn of a New Era, Broncos fans. The McBroncos Era.

Nolan is an incredible move! I was hoping Denver would pick him up as soon as he was let go by San Francisco. I know that it would be very difficult to bring in a DC mid-season, but the Chargers had success with it.

  • Bobby

Any word on the scheme mike nolan runs?

  • CB123

That’s what I want to know as well Bobby.

  • broncobobmeridian

    Nolan runs a 3-4 defense

  • CB123

    Thanks, broncobob!

  • http://BroncoTalk.net East

    Adam Schefter is never wrong.

Wow we’re scrapping the whole defense since Mike Nolan runs a 3-4. Lets hope Marcus Thomas can play NT.

  • dbroncos

I think that Thomas would be a DT (DE) in the 3-4 system. I could be wrong but i believe that is how it works. Correct me if i am wrong, but from what i understand the conversion goes (4-3 > 3-4): 4-3 DT > 3-4 DE, 4-3 DE > 3-4 OLB.

  • dazbroncos

well, if we go 3- 4 we r gonna need to spend some $$ and get beef up front…

The whole reason Dwayne Robertson left NYJ was b/c Mangiini went 3-4 and it didnt work with Robertons play style….

Trade down in Rd 1 and get BC Raji..he can play both DT or NT….

    just an idea…not a good one necessarily…

  • http://broncotalk.net Ian Henson

Last time Denver ran the 3-4 Nolan was the linebacker coach. He left Denver when Dan Reeves was fired and went with him to be the DC for the Giants. Nolan coached that great linebacking corps: Karl Mecklenburg, Simon Fletcher, Michael Brooks and Mike Croel…

Guess this means that our first pick in the draft will most likely be a middle linebacker.

  • http://broncotalk.net Kyle

I just updated a post to the RMN, who cites two players who have said they’ve been told Capers is the guy.

    Ay ay ay.

  • AKscott

The 2 players were Niko and Webster.. Bowlen figured a little misinformation wouldnt hurt since they wont be around next year anyway

  • jchase8410

Dude, the “McBronco era” made my night. I think that’s what I will call them from now on!

    McBroncos ’09

  • dazbroncos

For the luv of God ( which ever one you choose to follow…. hows that for PC!!!) please dont let RMN get this one right….of all the headlines to get right please dont let it be this one……

Nolan is much better in my peanut mind than Capers…..

  • http://broncotalk.net Ian Henson

When Elvis Dumervil was scouted all of his reports came back as a OLB, not a DE. Moss could also be a monster DE, Robinson should be able to kick out to DE, don’t know about Thomas, he may be able to NT — lord knows you don’t draft a NT normally. For the life of me cannot remember what Powell’s combine was like, where he’d fit in here. I also don’t know what the inside story with Tim Crowder is, but he certainly has the size for a 3-4.

Anyone still think Albert Haynesworth is the answer to our prayers? I’m thinking Nnmadi (if he can escape the franchise tag), a killer safety and a linebacker early in the draft.

  • AKscott

yeah and agreed on the Mcbroncos.. good stuff
hopefully we can supersize that Defense

  • http://broncotalk.net Kyle

I think we just wrote Woody Paige’s next column, AKscott.

  • http://BroncoTalk.net East

    I don’t think that it’s Capers for 2 reasons:

    1) Adam Schefter is rarely wrong.
    2) Bronco players can’t even communicate well on the field why should they know anything about this?

  • AKscott

lol kyle.. you can almost smell al the “mc” comments coming in tomorrows paper huh?

no pun intended.. ok well kinda intended

  • dazbroncos

    Ian Henson…

3- 4 or 4-3….. either way we still need a ILB and of the know FA’s out there I think Vilma b.c Saints wont keep him and send their rd 1 pick to Jets…so he’ll be available.
Ablert would be good but SOOO much $$ for an older player and coming off a knee strain. Also, he has Van Den Bosch on the other side drawing attention so how much is actualy his play is debatable …he has his moments and about 12 sacks however….

U pose a great Oakland questiion…With all their 08 FA spending ( Kelly, Hall, Walker and McFlopper…i mean Mcadden, and Nnmandi.) can they afford to resign Lechler and Nnmandi again….?

Who knows… But I luv the idea of getting Vilma and Nnmandi as FA’s and drafting DT/DL or safety…

    just my 2 cents

  • dazbroncos

    LOL kyle re woody paige….

    Pissa!!!

  • http://BroncoTalk.net East

Man am I so restless… it better be Nolan… why wouldn’t you select Mike Nolan over Dom Capers? Seriously!!!

  • CB123

Reading that RMN article, I think they jumped the gun on that heading (they seem to do that from time to time).

It only reads in the article, saying that Capers is the, “team’s new defensive coach.” So maybe he goes in as a secondary coach? Does he have a contract with the Pat’s by any chance?

Yeah East, I take Schefter’s words over everything else out there.

  • AKscott

Ian, Not sure about powell’s ability regarding NT, however i do remember reading something at draft time about how they liked his frame, and thought that he would be able to bulk up easily (which isnt something you see a whole lot of from interior lineman) , and was hailed as a run stopper.. take it for what its worth

  • dazbroncos

    East, i agree….

Also, and this is TOTAL speculation…but Bowlen is nothing if not loyal and also likes his people, as did Shanny, to move on and succeed but never rules them returning at a later date.

Now Nolan has been here before and IF he left on good terms to pursue development rather than being removed….. u get my drift…

He very well could be the guy….

Again… Schefter is NOT of wrong….

    (Please Schefter dont be wrong…LOL)

  • http://BroncoTalk.net East

Yeah Denver has confirmed it at denverbroncos.com

Mike Nolan could bring in a 3-4 and bring in TERRELL SUGGS in free agency! That would be a huge step forward in fixing the defense.

  • http://broncotalk.net Ian Henson

Kyle and I were just talking, basically players find out the same way that we do. They’re not reliable with this breaking stuff — unfortunately they haven’t gotten around to the that official twitter account that lets them know when Dove Valley’s going to be open or not.

  • http://broncotalk.net Ian Henson

Last time Nolan was our DC we drafted a young LB in the first round, Mike Croel, he had ten sacks his rookie season and went on to win RoY. Just saying.

  • http://BroncoTalk.net East

What I mean is Denver has confirmed Josh McDaniels and thats it.

  • dazbroncos

    hey east..

I only see the confirmation of Mcdaniels, not Nolan…..

  • dazbroncos

    just saw next post….never mind….lol

  • http://BroncoTalk.net East

Yeah daz I wish they confirmed it.

However a confirmation from Schefter is the next best thing.

What Ian and Kyle are saying makes sense. The players aren’t usually trusted as executives due to mouths like Terrell Owens.

  • http://broncotalk.net Ian Henson

    East, getting everybody excited =P

Maybe it can be like that scene in Farenheit 9/11 where everyone keeps refering to Al Gore as Mr. President. We’ll just keep talking about Nolan as if he was our DC. “Dom Capers isn’t MY Broncos DC…”

  • http://BroncoTalk.net East

    Haha Ian I hope…

The NFL has been crazy of late. All upsets and the NFC Championship is in Arizona…

Who knows what will happen next?

  • J

Wow google Mike Nolan! Than open the wikipedia page! Read MIke Nolan’s bio on the right it is already updated and Nolan is the DC for the Broncos! WOW

  • dazbroncos

    Hey Ian,

How about my personal fav… “The dorothy….there’s no DC like Nolan, there’s no DC like Nolan, there’s no DC like Nolan..”

Although admittedly the tart had links to Kansas so she can only be trusted so helpful…LOL

Or the Obi Wan…To all the other coaches and owners out there..” This is not the DC you are looking for”….. leaving him for us…..

I really need to get out more….

  • http://broncotalk.net Ian Henson

The biggest compliment out of all of this, one of the Patriots fans said, “Great, now we have to worry about the Broncos…” As if we hadn’t owned them basically every time that we played. I kept saying in 2007, that they were lucky that they didn’t have to play us. =P 17-1 would have been 16-2.

  • http://BroncoTalk.net East

    J –

Yeah I saw that too when I was in a frantic google search. Thats crazy, I hope we can trust Wikipedia like high schoolers do for book reports.

  • J

Ian I kinda had a feeling that the Broncs will hire McD
1.Because we play them and want to beat them
    2. The Pats know how to beat the Colts-the team we cant seem to beat!
    3. Just to piss off Belichik :)

  • AKscott

J, anyone can edit wiki.. doesnt make it true
but doesnt make it false either.. just not a great sole source of info

  • http://broncotalk.net Ian Henson

    J-

Saw that earlier, couldn’t tell who edited the wiki though… His page is Blue and Orange themed though.

    daz –

LOL, wave the wand, jedi mind trick whatever we need to do. Is a DC obligated to wear Reebok apparel as well? Or can the man still sport a suit?

  • AKscott

daz – as long as we can remember “there’s no place like home” and do better than damn 4-4 I’ll be happy

  • J

If the info for Nolan is true next season will be very exciting. McDaniels can teach Jay a thing or two and improve his game. Nolan should improve the D so the only weak part of our team is ST lets hope McDaniels can bring a good ST coach.

  • http://broncotalk.net Ian Henson

    J-

I guess McDaniels hire has the least amount of buyers remorse. Spagnuolo wanted to bring in new offensive guys and that kind of turned me off to him. Frazier wanted to keep all of our offensive guys, just ran a defense that was already similar to Denver’s current defense. I guess the brass wanted a whole new deal.

  • dazbroncos

    AK,
    You are 100% correct..

As long as the analogies are flying thick and fast:
‘Home is where the heart is” Hopefully the D will find its heart again an play with some both at home and away.

I like winning as much as the next guy but if we a re going to get beaten, and it will happen, then at least go down trying. To often in the last few seasons it seems like the D has just quit trying…. or played with no heart… hence the refererence….

    Go Broncos in 09!

  • Ellis

    McDaniels & Nolan …….what else!

  • CB123

I agree daz. We need a second-half defense also. Too many games lost in the second-half over the years.

So is this hopefully the end of the “prevent” defense? I sure hope so, more than anything else!

  • dazbroncos

    cb123,

The prevent has its place, but the only thing it has done for us lately seems to be prevent us from winning.

A 3 man rush, or more specifically, our 3 man rush is worse ( if possible) than our 4 man rush….
It also only works when the 8 you are dropping play their spaces and cover their players….

Our efforts have given the opposition QB about 23 minutes on average to find an open receiver ( 3rd and 18 against Miami springs to mind from OUR endzone..) but who is one to pick the small things….lol

Use it when you CANT lose…..

    just my 2 cents

  • Kurtis

I think Capers would be perfect but Nolan would also be a good move too! It’s nice to hear though that names are popping up with not only dc experience, but head coaching experience too!! That seems like only a plus. The pitiful end to a season is suddenly forgotten, I can’t wait for next season!

  • http://BroncoTalk.net East

    Yeah “prevent” sounds so bad.

It sounds like the defense knows something bad is going to happen but they’ll try to “prevent” it.

  • CB123

True, use it when the time is right.
