Mike Shanahan

The biggest Denver Broncos press conference since John Elway retired will take place at 11 a.m. MST in Dove Valley Headquarters Wednesday. Owner Pat Bowlen will discuss the firing of Head Coach/Executive VP Mike Shanahan, and the Mastermind will take the stand shortly thereafter.

We’ll be covering the event live-blog-style, so be sure to join us for instant thoughts, quotes, and commentary.

In the meantime, take a trip down Memory Lane and watch the 1995 press conference where Bowlen introduces Shanny as his new Head Coach. Video.

    where can we see it?

If Bowlen is able to get Spioli before the Browns do, here is something to at least consider.

Follow the Steelers model and hire from within.

Make Rick Dennison the head coach. WHAT…you say what??
    – he knows the offense and has done a great job picking up where Gibbs left with the O line.
    – he is home grown
    – he is smart
    – he knows defense (orange crush, remember them)
    – he has several years of coaching experience under his belt
    – he wouldn’t be expensive

Make Bates the ‘full meal deal’ offensive coordinator

Spioli can then focus his attention on finding the right defensive coordiator and stocking him up with some decent talent. Not to mention rebuilding the front office and scouting department.

Am I the only one who thinks its a bit odd that someone who has been fired is having a news conference sitting next to the person who fired him? If nothing else it must mean there is still some unburnt bridges between the two.

The press conference will stream from the Denver Broncos site: http://www.denverbroncos.com/page.php?id=334&storyID=8747

mikebirty: it happened with jimmy johnson and jerry jones. usually it is with a high profile coach and when the two are somewhat close.

Thanks Chris! I also anticipate/speculate that NFL Network, ESPN, and the local Denver news stations will carry the press conference. It’s that big.

whats there to say Shanahan?? i mean seriously what is there to say?? “Im sorry i suck as a GM” “im sorry i dont know how to build a good defense” “I only won because of John Elway” “I let my ego get in the way of building a team” come on this scharade has gone on long enough. we should be holding a presser for the hiring of a GM.

  • http://broncomadness.com Garrett Barnes

kerry yell at shanny as he is now. but do not say that he did not take a part of that super bowl win. he signed steals like TD, Rod Smith and Shannon Sharpe. He got Mark Schlereth, and Ed McCafferey. Do not say that he did not win those Super Bowls only because of Elway. He built a decent defense for some years. Remember Al Wilson, Trevor Pryce, D.J Williams, Darrent Williams, and Champ Bailey? Just do not take those Super Bowls away from Shanny. That is just insulting.

  • kerry

    Garrett Barnes:

Shanny signed Shannon Sharpe huh?? really when did that happen? last time i checked Shannon was there when Shanny INHERITED that team. and how many SB’s did we go to AFTER Elway retired. actually how many playoff games did we win post Elway?? oh thats right 1!!!! and because Shanahan drafted some decent defensive players, does not mean he built a good defense. and yeah sure Shanny had part in the SB years. but Elway and TD were the Biggest reasons. as evidenced by the fact Shanny won 1 single playoff game since they left. ten years and one playoff win. that clearly shows who deserves the most credit. and it is not Mike Shanahan. but he does deserve some credit. and ill tell you what is insulting, guys like you who say is so great when he in fact is not. he has no football sense when it comes to defense. he is a one sided coach as evidenced by the great offenses and terrible defenses. a couple of good defensive draft picks in ten years doesnt equal a good defense whatsoever. it takes a team to build a defense. not just a couple players on defense. and Shanahan didnt even draft Champ Bailey. so dont sit there and give him credit when Champ Bailey was already great before getting to Denver. that leaves Al Wilson, Trevor Pryce, DJ Williams and Darrent Williams. 4 good players in ten years. you are telling me Shanahan deseves credit for drafting 4 good decent defensive players in ten years??!?? thats terrible!! most coaches would never get drafting duties after the horrible defensive drafts like Shanahan has had.

So Pat Bowlen just stated that he didn’t have any intention of hiring a GM. That’s interesting. Might that mean that he’s looking to hire a head coach that would have more than just the authority to coach the team?

I don’t like the firing of Shanahan, but I understand it. I understand that Pat Bowlen is frustrated with not making the playoffs, and that he realizes that our defense is an embarrassment. If he told Shanahan to fire the DC and Shanahan refused, then Bowlen had no other choice but to let him go. PB is the owner and CEO, and he has to rule with an iron fist, which he hasn’t done in a while. But I think this is was an emotional decision for Bowlen, and not a logical one.

Shanahan has the best winning percentage of any coach in Broncos history. He has a terrific approach to offense, as seen by the 1k yard Running Back factory we’ve been running for the past decade. He’s been in SIX superbowls with the offenses he’s coached. He’s won 138 games for the Broncos, which is fantastic considering that there are very few coaches in the NFL who have ever even won 75 games. In his tenure with the team, he has only had 2 losing seasons. Think about it for a moment – what other coaches can you mention who have accomplished that?

Mike, we appreciate all you’ve done for us, and all that you’ve given to the Broncos organization. We are grateful for your time on the team, and in my book, you’re a class act. Thanks for respecting the fans, the players, and the ownership for the entire time you were with us.

I have to say, that was not the press conference I expected. No one was pissed (and they really seemed to be honest about it and not just blowing smoke). Anyone else think it was weird?

  • ssc

good grief for once kerry, shut your trap and have a little respect for shanahan. can you spare us all your vile presence for one respectful moment for a guy who’s been a big part of broncos history?

  • Anthony33

    ssc
    agree.

Wow…compare this press conference to the fiasco al davis put on a couple of months ago.

Denver has and always will be a class act.

  • rcsodak

Kerry, huh? hmmmm….john kerry? Afterall, he’s the only bloviating fool I know that could make as big of an ass as you’ve done.
Shut your pie hole for once.
The game changes. If you don’t change with it, you lose. Same goes for defenses and offenses. Shanny gave his life to the organization. 100+ hrs a week. He hired people, with high expectations. He fired people who didn’t fit the bill. If you had paid attention, you’d have learned something, as well. Shanny NEVER had total control of the organization. He had people in positions that were to do their jobs as scouts/coordinators/coaches; and they were to give him their input and he then would make “informed” decisions. Sometimes, those people left something to be desired. But Shanny was the person that made the final decision from his sources, so the buck stopped with him. And he stood up like a man and acknowledged that fact.
I think the Kerry’s of the world need to sthu, and quit acting like they know everything there is to know in the world of the NFL. Until you’ve been in those shoes, you don’t know anything more than the next underinformed fan. Grow up!

  • Paty

    KERRY
you suck right along with Pat Bowlen why don’t you go join him and take the job since you think you’re smarter than everyone here.
It’s Shanny haters like you that helped Bowlen make that terrible mistake

  • Paty

Have some respect for Shannahan he is a GREAT COACH and a terrible loss to this franchise you are an idiot stfu

  • thunder

So the only reason he has for letting him go is because he had to follow his instinct? Hmmm not buying that I think he was pissed cause the chargers kicked our ass and that was the reason. I was pissed off too but get rid of the problem hire a gm and dc and let Mike keep coaching he is the best available and remember we don’t count on alot of money to pick someone better.

Funny how those who have the most negative stuff to say usually are remarkably uninformed.
