So much for enjoying a much-improved 2008 season. After the 2007 season, the Denver Broncos (7-9) drafted 12th overall. After 2008, the Broncos (8-8) will do the same.

Thanks to trades made during and before the season, the Broncos have ten total draft choices, in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 5th, 5th, 6th, 6th, 7th, and 7th rounds.

The 2009 NFL Draft will take place on April 25th and 26th. AFC West rival Chiefs, Raiders, and Chargers will tentatively draft 3rd, 7th, and 16th respectively.

Due to strength of schedule tiebreakers, the Broncos are the first of five 8-8 teams to draft. No complaints here, though; if we’re out of the playoffs, might as well enjoy the best possible draft position. I’m all about the defense this April – let’s do everything possible to get a respectable, if not dominant, unit out there on the field.

  • Boisebroncoguy

Any ideas on who we should take? I don’t have a clue at this point.

  • the decider13

I’m leaning towards Taylor Mays. BJ Raji would be good, James Laurenitas, Everette Brown if he falls to his. All defense.

  • robtink242

please lets see if we could trade moss or crowder to a 3-4 team for a a draft pick.

  • Riverscanbl&wme

Does San Diego have someone else’s pick because because 16 seems a little high for a playoff team. Who we should take depends a lot on who we sign in free agency but I would like that Rey Maualuga kid out of SC. The kid is a monster and with him and Woodyard flying around the overall attitude on defense would be immediately improved. I like William Moore at safety from Mizzou. The kid is always in position to make a play and has attitude. Just a couple options at the present time knowing full well the draft boards will be completely different when April comes around.

  • http://broncotalk.net Kenshun Smith

Hey we need a lights out defense we need guys thats going to fly around and not give up on plays. First starting with defensive line my pick T.Cody Alabama or Bj Raji BC, DE Michael Johnson GT ot Evertt Brown-FSU, FS Taylor Mays USC or Rashad Johnson ALabama, SS Myron Rolle FSU or Nic Harris Oklahoma lets turn this defense around for 2009. Go Broncos!!!!!!!!!!!

  • http://broncotalk.net Kenshun Smith

We need a defensive line that will hold 2 offensive lineman to free up our linebackers our defense is not getting to the Quarterback.
    28th in defense we suck!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • http://broncomadness.com Garrett Barnes

Rey Maualuga is the best linebacker in this years class and would definitely be in our range. I would not go after Taylor Mays at S because he has a high bust factor. I would beware of drafting him. William Moore is much better but right now we are looking for Maualuga. In my opinion he is actually the best player in the draft and surprisingly in our range.

  • MIAbronco

guys, you have got to watch the youtube scouting video of bj raji, he is an absolute monster in the middle with a high moter. he may lac great tackling skills but at 6’2″ 335 he is exactly what we need even iif we do get haynesworth in the off season, they would match up perfectly together. also dont forget about carlton powell as he was one the BEST at stopping the run in college. we dont need terrence cody, he is a fat slob.

dont get too caught up in taylor mays, i dont think he is going to pan out to a great pro, but i do like ray mauluga as he could become our leader in the middle with dj.

so if we get ray or raji i will be very happy and we can address safety in the second or third round. i think shanny should give up on looking for defensive ends because without a solid middle to take up blockers it wont matterwho is out there as they will be blocked.

  • kerry

ahhh draft talk. my favorite. but before i begin let me get some things out of the way before the dunderheads come in screaming. Julius Peppers, Nnamdi Asomugha are gonna be franchised. that has already been stated. so they wont be available in free agency. the Titans are already negotiating with Haynesworth so he more then likely wont be available. now that that is out of the way….let me begin.

I like Rey Maualuga alot. great potential. but if anyone remembers Shanahan wanted Johnathan Vilma BADLY this past offseason. Vilma is gonna be a free agent this offseason. (if the Saints resign him they forfeit their 1st round pick, so dont bet on the Saints resigning him) so look for Shanahan to get Vilma thus not drafting Maualuga (i prefer Maualuga)

Saftey is a need. but not as much as some think. Taylor Mays is a good one but has high bust potential like Micheal Huff had. Mays will run a 4.35-4.40 so look for Al Davis to draft him just on 40 time alone. William Moore has good size to go with speed. but doesnt warrent the 12th pick. perhaps a trade down to get Moore and a mid round pick would be ideal. keep an eye on Patrick Chung also to be drafted in the second round.

DE is a HUGE need. a great pass rush will make an average secondary great. now there really isnt a DE that is ELITE in this draft. guys like Brian Orakpo, Georgie Selvie are good but not great. my pick for the draft if a DE was taken would be Senderick Marks out of Auburn. he moved to DT this year but played DE before. he is 291 pounds. a 291 pound DE would be ideal to rush as well as stop the run.

DT is also a need. Haynesworth wont be available in free agency and yet again there isnt a real clear cut elite DT. that is unless Terrence Cody declares for the draft. this guy is 6’7, 365 pounds. not very polished but a huge body in the middle. but Shanahan doesnt like big DT’s so dont look for him to be a bronco.

CB needs to be addressed but in the later rounds. so ill skip that.

OL- again upgraded later in the draft.

    QB. no

    WR-NO

    TE-NO

RB-yes. a franchise RB is needed. its time for Shanahan to drop his ego of thinking he can turn bums into stars. Beanie Wells and Knowshown Moreno maybe available at the 12 pick. a franchise back would instantly take the pressure off Jay Cutler from having to throw the ball 45 times a game.

but all in all until the combine rools around its impossible to say who will actually be available at the 12 pick. Maualuga could have a stellar combine and be gone in the top 5. same with Taylor Mays and Terrence Cody.

  • Riverscanbl&wme

I agree MIAbronco but we need complete defensive ends that can also play the run. Doom and Moss both have the speed move around the end but can’t collapse the pocket or hold the point on run downs. We need guys like Merling last year or a Trevor Pryce that have the size to play inside but the speed to play outside. Basically we need to get physical in the trenches. Look at New England. They have invested all of their money and draft choices on the D-Line and solid linebackers who play smart fundamental football. They have let guys like Asanti and Ty Law go but still remained great on defense because they stop the run and can create a pass rush. It doesn’t matter if you have Deion and Champ playing corner they can’t do their job with no pass rush and the fear of playaction stemming from second and shorts. We just need a physical defense that can hold an opponent to 20 points.

  • kerry

    MIABronco:

i checked on BJ Raji. looks good. i dont watch Youtube videos though because they dont tell you anything about conedrills or Shuttle times. Raji isnt even projected to go until the mid second round. so why waste the 12th pick on this guy?? and Carlton Powell barely is 300 pounds and coming off a major Achilles injury. he wont be a factor at all in the upcoming season. Shanahan has to stop with these smaller DT’s. they dont work!!

  • olen

Trade Champ Bailey? Why would anyone want to trade a person of Champs talent and financial cost to the cap for another untested talent that is not known ? Ain’t football careers a matter of who has the most talent on a continuous basis ?

  • robtink242

i’m in total agreement with Kerry. Vilma and Dj back together would be scary. i dont think well draft any Saftey in the top rounds. But a physical DE sounds great. Shanny has to get Beanie Wells he’ll give us playoff hope with a tough line up in 09.

  • MIAbronco

    kerry:

the last few draft sites that i checked out (like espn and mel kiper) had raji as a mid first rounder, plus you’ve got to think that this guy will put up great combine numbers, even though i dont believe in combine results for defensive linemen, some of them can just play.

on cody, that guy will be a bust, granted he is huge, hes slow as dirt and will have serious weight issues in the nfl.

  • kerry

    robtink242:

yes Vilma and DJ would be great. i look forward to that. although Maualuga would be great. i dont see it. i dont think safety will be addressed in the first round but possibly the second with Patrick Chung out of Oregon. my first round projection will be DT. Shanahan always says he doesnt care about giving up passing yards, but hates to give up rushing yards. translation :HEY SHANAHAN, DRAFT A BIG, STRONG DT. NOT SOME 300 POUND LOSER WHO GETS TOSSED AROUND LIKE A SACK OF NICKELS!!!

  • kerry

    Miabronco:

alot of people said the same thing about Kris Jenkins having weight issues. and he is one of the most dominant DT’s in the NFL. ive checked some sites too, and the knock of Raji is the fact he was academically ineligable alot last year, thus missing alot of time. some sites say mid first round, some say mid second, one of them even said top of the third round. im not a huge fan of combine results either. accept conetimes and shuttle drills. that measures a guys agility and initial burst at the snap of the ball. 40 times mean nothing really.

  • Bucky

    kerry

I have said it before and i will say it again, Nnamdi will not take the franchise tag this time around, he wasn’t happy about it last year, and he was been vocal about his displeasure with Al this year and the way he has treated guys like Hall, maybe they will be able to franchise him, but i don’t see it happening.

Other than that i agree with you, i think we pick up Vilma and take either a big DE or (please God) a RB like wells in the first, but if we dont go after Vilma then Maualuga will be the guy, I still prefer the Draft rout.

  • kerry

    Bucky:

do you know how the franchise tag works?? a player doesnt have a choice about the franchise tag. if it is placed on him, he either signs the deal and plays, or sits out until he signs. he cant simply say “i dont want the franchise tag” it doesnt work that way. and Al Davis doesnt care about his displeasure. he will Franchise Asomugha. he is already on record saying he will do so. if Asomugha doesnt sign he sits until he signs or is traded. but a team would have to meet the trade requirements. and his price will be too high in a trade. but Asomugha doesnt have a choice about the franchise tag. if he is tagged he plays for the Raiders or sits out. there is no “i dont want the franchise tag” same thing happened with Haynesworth last year. he whined about the tag but had to deal with it because he didnt have a choice in the matter. thats why there was a Clause in this contract saying if he made the Pro Bowl he couldnt be franchised. Asomugha didnt have that stipulation put in his franchise tag agreement.

  • MIAbronco

    kerry:

i agree, 40 times are just for show except for maybe a deep threat receiver, because when is a lineman going to run more then 10 yards in a straight line down the field,, and think about the bench press, when is a player going to lie on his back and press 225 lbs off his chest in the course of a game. heres another fun fact about the combine: remember good ol kevin kasper, he broke all sorts of speed, agility and quickness records at the combine and accounted for nothing in the nfl.

  • OC Bronco

I just love that we have a lot of picks. That is the key to putting together a winning team – not high picks. And we DON’T need to waste a #1 on a RB. We just need one that will stay healthy! I can’t imagine ever having another season where we (any team for that matter) lose 6 starting RB’s.

  • jchase8410

I don’t care who they draft or sign via FA. If the corners are ping to play 15 yards off the receivers, and the linebackers play 6 yards off the ball and never blitz, other teams will pick them apart. The defense SUCKED all year due to BOTH lack of real talent, and a horrible defensive scheme. If 1 of those areas are fixed, Denver could have a middle of the pack defense. If both are addressed in the offseason, they could be top 10 material.
For that to happen, Shanahan would have to hire a real DC and let him TAKE CONTROL of the defense…but as Kerry has pointed out so many times, the likelyhood of that happening is very slim.
So I guess taking care of the talent problem is the best route to take. I like the DE from Texas, he is ridiculous strong. Maualuga should be Denver’s first pick though. Everyone knows what a monster he is, and his skill set should translate well into the NFL. Watching him play reminds me of how Urlacher played in college. He has size, speed, swagger, and he hits like a truck! Go get him please!!!

  • melvin

Defense … that is all ….

  • c.j. kriegel

I say the broncos go all out on safeties. We should go 4 a free safety like william moore first then go 4 a strong safety like taylor mays. After releasing john lynch i knew we were going to have problems at the safety position but these 2 players create a good possibility of fixing that problem.

p.s. Matt Prater needs to go (he sucks). the broncos should go 4 sam swank (he can actually make a p.a.t.)

  • Bob W

Well I guess it all is moot now that Shanny got the boot , now it will all be a big surprise where and or when we will draft and by who will be running it . For myself if Nnamdi Asomugha is not taggged and Jonathan Vilma teammate of DJ’s at Miami are out there they are the only two free agents I go after with a try at Chris Canty DE of dallas. Notice the little d in dallas HAHA anyway those are my 3 free agents get the rest in the draft.

  • Bob W

Forgot about our kicker and punter ( K ) Jason Hansen ( P ) Shane Lechler bet these two players are ready to go somewhere where they can win some games.

  • http://fuckoff Keenan S

First off, the broncos defence was the weakest pile of s*** I have EVER seen in my entire life, even Champ Bailey (dont get me wrong I love champ hes my favorite player) but even he sucked, yaya he was injured but when he was in he was gettin burned, he is clearly aging, and the safeties are the biggest pile of s*** in the league, what denver has to do is either load up on the offence (aka DRAFT A RUNNING BACK IN THE FIRST ROUND THIS YEAR!!) and just do what the Jets did last year and go on a free agent signing frenzy. Sign HAYNESWORTH.. he is just what we need to not only help, but SIGNIFICANTLY help the d-line, there all little bi****s. Then go out and draft a free agent safety like Jermaine Phillips or Dewan Landry, if we get a running back in the first round like Keyshawn Moreno or Beanie Wells, people will have to respect the running game again and that will make Brandon MarShall and Eddie Royal even more dangerous, thats just my opinion.. o and firing MIKE SHANAHAN aka a future hall of famer.. what and the f*** were you thinking Bowlan?

  • Ben

We need to draft a good safty. Dont know how many times this year i saw the safty come up to fill the hole only to get juked out leading to a big run. William Moore is a good looking safty then taylor mays.

  • Ben C

I think taylor mays is a better pick than william moore but I do agree with you Ben that we do need a good saftey because are secondary sucks and just looked how the chargers pushed us around do to our crapy secondary if we had a better secondary we would be in the playoffs right now. Though I do think we need a saftey I also would not mind a good DT because that position is also what cost us a playoff spot.

  • http://broncotalk.net/2008/12/denver-broncos-to-draft-12th-in-2009-nfl-draft/ bronc nation

Keenan are you kidding me? our offence is fine how it is, we shouldnt draft a rb high unless the new coach thinks that PEYTON HILLIS and ryan turrain and selvin young wont be healthy, we should sign vilma as a free agent maybe even zach thomas cause i think hes leavin dallas, then use our 1st rounde pick on a dt like terrence cody who can push the pocket and finally start to stop the run, then we can draft Patrick Chung second round. The problem with our front seven this yr was over pursuit, even dj got caught outa position play after play because he wasnt readin the plays rite and jus got way too aggressive. I would LOVE to see rey maleuga as a brnco but the bottom line is if we can afford to get a pretty good frree agent mlb then we should, and use our first pick to start to put together a decent front seven by getting a guy like terrence cody who could be a fututre shaun rodgers

  • Anthony Clark

    A. hanesworthe will be available because his contract states that he could not be franchised. Taylor Mays will not be a bust. He will bring some toughness to the secondary and the ability to play big recievers and stuff the run. If you can fire a superbowl coach you can pull it off! Get it done baby!

  • Glenn

Denver’s draft strategy is predicated on 1) our choice of head coach and their defensive system and 2) what we are able to achieve in the Free Agent market going into the draft. Assume we go with Spagnuolo and his 4-3 Fire Zone (Eagles/Giants) defense and sign DT Haynesworth.

Then I think the decision for the 1st pick is Linebacker or Safety. USC’s Mays may not last to our 1-12/12 pick, many boards have him going to SF at 10. The only other 1st round strong safety would be Mizzou’s Moore. MLB has two mid 1st guys to pick from; Ohio State’s Lauranaitis or USC’s Maualuga. Going with either a Strong Safety or a Middle Linebacker leads to decisions about what to do with DJ Williams and prospect Barrett. Woodyard is best used at the “Will” WOLB. Which means that DJ either moves to the “Sam” SOLB or he doesn’t start. The wrap on DJ is that he is undersized for the 4-3 MLB, who ideally needs to be a big run stuffer. DJ would be fine in a 3-4 at MLB is he is the “protected” MLB (lining up behind the NG) with Muaugula or Laurinaitis “unprotected” by a DL and exposed to contact from the OGs. In the 4-3 Fire Zone, the Free and Strong safeties become almost interchangable, so if we go Mays, Barrett could go to FS, remain at SS to back Mays, or add 10-15 pounds to 235-240 in move to OLB (he has the speed at 225 to add weight). Manuel is fine as a backup SS/FS. If Moore, Lauranaitis and Mauagula are all on the board at 12, Denver might consider trading down in the 1st from say 12 to 18 and picking up a late 2nd (300 points).

But, if Mays is gone at 12, then I think we should go MLB with either Muaugula or Laurinaitis. That makes DJ and his contract expendable, unless you want to move him strong side. If we sign Haynesworth and Bowlen is writing checks to Shanny and a bunch of assistant coaches that aren’t retained, Denver may need budgetary (if not cap) relief. DJ, I think gets you at least a 3rd, maybe a late 2nd pick. Winborn is a decent SOLB. So after the first round our LB corps is Woodyard – Laurinaitis/Mauagula – Winborn plus a 2nd or 3rd round pick minus DJ’s contract (which helps pay for Haynesworth). Hmmm.

The next decision for Denver is what to do with the 2-16/48 pick (it becomes a 2-15/47 if SD makes the Super Bowl). A 2-16/48 pick is worth “420 points” on the standard draft pick value table. Denver painfully lacks depth. This impacts us late season when injuries deplete us as well as on special teams. The 3rd and 4th rounds are loaded with players I like for Denver. Down trading the 2-16/48 pick is logical if you think Denver needs depth rather than being just a few players away from a turnaround. I also think Denver should let many of our UFAs go (McCree, Paymah, Peterson, Webster), and cut Koutouvides. I also think we’ll need to part with Robertson and his complex contract so as to avoid bonus money due after the draft; money that also could be used to fund Haynesworth. So here’s a plausible Denver draft (using walterfootball.com draft rankings):

*1-12/12 = Lauranaitis ILB Ohio State

    # 2-16/48 (15 if SD goes to SB) – Trade down with St Louis? to the 3-3/66 + 4-21/117 + 6-3/163. The 2/48 = 420 points gets 3/66=260, 4/99=104, 6/163=27 points.

    # 3-6/70 (trade DJ Williams to Cincinnati), 240 points = Parson CB Ohio
    * 3-15/79 (14 if SD goes to SB) = Scott NT/DT Clemson
    # 3-21/85 (St Louis) = R. Jennings RB Liberty

    * 4-14/110 (13 if SD goes to SB) = S. Smith FS/CB Utah
    # 4-21/117 (St Louis) = Bardon WR Cal Poly

    * 5-4/132 (Seattle) = Egboh DE Stanford
    # 5-17/145 (trade Dre Bly), 34 points from Arizona = Unger C/G Oregon
    * 5-13/141 (12 if SD goes to SB) = Donaldson RB Western Illinois

    # 6-3/163 (St Louis) = Osaisai CB Stanford
    * 6-12/172 (15 if SD goes to SB) = J. Lane FB Texas A&M
    # 6-20/180 (Trade C. Jackson), 20 points from Detroit = McCain KR/CB Utah
    * 6-24/184* (Atl, exchanged for Atl 7-27, if Foxworth resigns) = Abdallah NT/DT Ohio State

    * 7-16/203 (14 if SD goes to SB) Fiammetta FB Syracuse
    * 7-27/214* (back to ATL for the ATL 6th assuming Foxy resigns).

Denver would then go hard at CFAs (undrafted collegiate free agents).
    CFA – FS/CB Pinkard USC
CFA – SOLB Horniek Colorado State
CFA – WOLB Akins Boston College
    CFA – Scatback/PR Thigpen Indiana
CFA – Scatback/Slot Rec Dixon Kentucky
CFA – QB Holbrook New Mexico State
CFA – DE Norris Oregon State

The DL is built around Haynesworth as the “heavy” 4-3 NT in the strong C-G gap. Two additional “heavies” are added with Scott and Abdullah. Thomas, Powell (2008 5th Rounder), and 2008 UFA Shaw compete for the weak side C-T gap DT slot. In “heavy” anti run rotations both the NT and DT could be manned with 315 pound or heavier anti-run gap stuffers.

Drafting Lauranaitis allows DJ Williams to be traded.

Trade down the #2-16/48 pick, since the 2nd round is weak in positions needed, Denver needs depth

The defensive backfield is retooled with CB Parson, FS/CB Smith, CB Osaisai, CB/KR McCain, FS/CB Pinkard. Parson, Osaisai and McCain compete with J. Williams & J. Bell for the starting RCB. Smith and Pinkard compete to replace McCree.

CB McCain and Scatback Thigpen compete for PR/KR specialists

Drafting two true heavy FBs, (J. Lane and Fiammetta) allows Larsen to move to his natural MLB position and play FB as a reserve. Hillis moves to RB. Lane can also be worked as a backup to Graham at TE (Mustard can go).

Two additional 20 carry RBs are added in Jennings and Donaldson, resigning Pittman becomes unnecessary. The 4 man heavy RBs are Torain, Hillis, Jennings and Donaldson.

Scatbacks Aldrige (2008 CFA) and Dixon (2009 CFA) work hard at learning the Slot Receiver position as depth to Stockley.

The Linebackers are Woodyard WOLB – Laurinaitis MLB – Winborn SOLB

Unger is added to give depth at C/G pending 2009/2010 Wiegmann and Nalen retirements and to compete with Lichtensteiger for the 2010 starting C postion, assuming Wiegmann returns for a final year.

6’6’ 225 pound 4.55 second 40, WR Bardon backs up Marshall at the “heavy” Flanker position in Denver’s WCO, works on specializing on fade patterns in red zone.

Denver can also deploy a “heavy” pro or I set with Lane and Hillis at FB/RB and Bardon and Marshall as oversized SE/WR in the red zone. Nasty.

i think we need to find a good coach before we even think about the draft!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!broncos rule!!!!!

  • Matt

Glenn … your comment is very detailed i like that. However your use of heavy makes me want to hit you with a heavy pan in the face. The Broncos do need help in draft But the D-line is where a great D is born… look at New York… They Need Spag’s to find the talent and turn the D around.

  • http://broncotalk.net/2008/12/denver-broncos-to-draft-12th-in-2009-nfl-draft/ bronc nation

hey who thinks that hiring mcdaniels was a good move and who thinks we shoulda gone with spag or frazier?

  • matthew

what we need is eithier ray maualuga,if he falls to us or we trade.or taylor mays.ray mauluga will do great, and taylor mays is great that’s my choice go USC and BRONCOS!

  • Dustin

I think we should take Chris wells in the first round how about you all.

  • Dustin

Who thinks she should with Mike at the HC POSITION…… I DO

  • Dustin

Is there a chance we might pick up Pig Brown from Missouri as a free agent or even Chase Coffman in the second round we need a back up TE that can block and catch instead of Ryan doing all the work.

  • Dustin

I also think that William Moore would be a good pick because we need someone to fill in Lynches spot we was really hurting in the secondary without him last year.

  • jacob cassidy

i think they should draft brian orakpo from (texas) and ian johnson from (boise state) and try to get julise peppers and try to get bigger linbackers

  • Matt K

im really feeling B.J. Raji i think we need a big strong tackle up front to help stop the run wich we could not do last. year look at what l.j. did, and this guy is a beast been watching him at the combine and colledge tapes i think hell be a perfect fit to help rebuild our defence, will B.J. be availible idk lotta people have him real high on mock drafts but if we could i hope we get him, as for beenie i would love to see him in denver we need another franchise power back but i think we cant afford to waist our 1st round pick on offence just my opinion n beenies not goona be in the 2cnd round i like ray to i think thats who we will pick up wich is a good pick also top mid linebacker is who we need to compliment d.j. n boss

  • http://www.myspace.com/724swagking Dave Smith

WE NEED A RUNNING BACK, DEFENSE OF PLAYERS AND WIDE OUT

  • http://None Aaron Zimmerman

    Mark Sanchez – first
    Taylor Mays – 2nd

  • Ollie

We shouldnt take sanchez first because we need to focus on our defensive needs. We need a DT or DE like tyson jackson from LSU or if BJ Raji if he is still available. Second taylor mays isnt even in the draft but he would be a good choice if he wasnt returning to USC for his senior season. If we do decide to take a QB in the draft for some reason i dont think we should waste our first rounds picks on sanchez and if we really need to pick up a QB take Rhett Boman in the 3rd round.
