Champ Bailey vs. Chargers

Champ Bailey vs. Chargers

Adam Schefter of the NFL Network is reporting that Denver Broncos cornerback Champ Bailey and linebacker D.J. Williams will be deactivated for today’s home game against the Kansas City Chiefs. On Friday it looked as if fullback/linebacker Spencer Larsen would also sit-out, but given what we know he will likely suit and spell/back-up the returning Nate Webster.

For the Chiefs wide receiver Mark Bradley is out, while defensive end Tamba Hali is probable.

At cornerback Dre Bly will go one-on-one with Dewayne Bowe for most of the game, Bailey normally covers the legendary Chiefs tight end Tony Gonzales. With Bailey out, it’s tough to say who will match up with him predominantly- Jamie Winborn and Karl Paymah or a combined effort forward is likely. This could spell trouble in Denver today.

UPDATE: Chiefs linebacker Donnie Edwards will also be out.

Am I the only one who sees the irony of Nate Webster, Nate freaking Webster!!! being healthier longer than Bailey and Williams. This is the same guy who no one wanted to start because of his injury history! I do like him though and am glad to have him back.

Bummer about Champ…….but I guess its better to have him at 100%

champ probaly feels good, but rather have bailey cover smith than bowe

    Garrett- Good point.

Merc- I’m actually more nervous about that match-up. It seems like every time he hurts himself it’s against Terrell Owens or Randy Moss. It’s usually just around take off time and self induced. The groin against Moss and remember the hamstring pull against Owens?

It will be fun to watch if he gets to go across from Steve Smith though.

Without Champ and DJ, the defensive line really needs to step up their game and GET TO THE F-ING QB. If they can force a young QB in Thigpen to force some bad throws, Dre and Karl and Josh can make some plays. Stopping Gonzalez is going to be a huge challenge without Champ, so a pass rush is paramount in this game. Also, LJ is going to be hard to stop if Denver continues their trend of missing sure tackles. I am worried about having Webster back because he does a terrible job of meeting the runningback in the hole, and if you let LJ get through the hole without slowing him down he will hurt you.
The offense doesn’t worry me as much. They have to come out and get some points on the first drive and set the tone for the game. If They can jump out early and get a lead, I don’t think the Chefs can come back. Here’s hoping, Go Broncos…oh, and I’m going to the san Diego game on the 28th, so I hope that game doesn’t matter.

jchase- scoring on the first drive is clutch. It’s something that during most games decides whether the team wins or loses.

Bill Cowher just called Denver the most dangerous team in the AFC West

  • Bobby

Sorry, He said the entire AFC…Not just the West

  • http://broncos-denver-broncos.blogspot.com/ Ian Henson

Bobby- Wow, that’s great that Cowher said that. He’s always had such a high level of mutual respect shared with Shanahan. I don’t know if I (big bold italics) would even go as far as to say that they are the most dangerous team in the AFC. Though I can’t remember ever having this potent of an offense.

I think he meant that this Denver Broncos team is not one that you want to under-estimate. If you look past them, they will beat you.

DJ deactivated, what does mean? Is he healthy and they are making him sit? What does that mean for his future in Denver? Or, am I just reading to much into the choice of wording? I’d rather he just move over to middle linebacker than Webster. Woodyard is looking really good.
