In 1998, the Denver Broncos entered the playoffs as a wild card team, five-weeks later they defeated the Green Bay Packers (and Brett Favre) 31-24 in Super Bowl XXXII- becoming the first AFC team to win the Super Bowl since 1984. In that season, the Broncos had loses to both the Oakland Raiders and to the Kansas City Chiefs. Prior to the playoffs the team went 1-2 over their final three-games.
It could have happened anywhere, but it happened to happen in New York. Sunday afternoon was that parting of the dark clouds that I’ve been prophetizing often, as of late. Last week we let you know that the Broncos would defeat the Jets. Then we ran over to The New York Times and told them too. No one really agreed, but the belief of The Nation prevailed. So Denver’s not quite the King of New York just yet, but it’s looking like they’ll have to be if they want to win the Super Bowl. Not to mention that there are a lot of great teams in between now and the big game.
Three-games up in the AFC West, with four to go and all of a sudden Denver’s found a hero in another late-round back with Peyton Hillis, who this week is not just up for Rookie of the Week, he’s also up for Offensive Player of the Week (along with Jay Cutler, yes I know one is for rushing, one is for passing). Yes, Denver is only 7-5, but take a look the recently released ESPN Power Rankings, check out the top ten- how many teams has Denver beat on the list? Three (Tampa [4], New York [7] and Atlanta [9]), with one to go Carolina [5], the remaining schedule for Denver is anything but easy.
As you all know, Denver most likely will make the playoffs, but how awful would it be to face the San Diego Chargers in San Diego on December 28th for a chance to make the playoffs? Let’s not let that happen. I know that Super Bowl talk at this point is ridiculous, but if not me then who is going to mention it? Denver’s been worse in a season and gone to the big show. Keep in mind that last Sunday Denver started 12-players who had less than three-years experience. The team has made it this far using practice squad and third-stringers, it’s not too far out to say that they’ll be even better once people start to get healthy and the team starts to approach the playoffs.
There are undeniable connections pointing to the fact that these 2008 Denver Broncos could go down as one of the better teams in franchise history. It’s not every year that we have so many young players nominated weekly for awards. Let’s set off the hype for Chiefs week right here in the comments section Nation! We’d love to hear what you think…
