The Denver Broncos put in claims for two players on the waiver wire this week. Twice, they were denied.

Twice, AFC West rivals got the better of the Broncos.

Bill Williamson of ESPN reports that the San Diego Chargers acquired running back Michael Bennett this week off waivers, trumping the Broncos’ claim on the former Buc because of the team’s lesser record. The Oakland Raiders, meanwhile, acquired cornerback/returner Justin Miller off the waiver wire, also trumping Denver, who put in a claim.

When a player is waived, teams have 24 hours to stake a claim. The team with the lowest record wins the claim.

It’s wildly speculated that the Chargers, who have RBs Ladainian Tomlinson, Darren Sproles and rookie Jacob Hester already in tow, added Bennett purely to prevent Denver from acquiring a much-needed running back as the AFC West race tightens down the stretch. Denver has placed four running backs on Injured Reserve since the fourth week of the preseason, forcing them to add two running backs this week.

The Broncos had luck on their side to start the season, but that luck has gone and reversed itself, and the teams’ fortunes, right quick. They’re simply decimated by injuries. It’s ‘just their luck’ that the two times they put in claims on the waiver wire, rivals trailing in the AFC West are able to get them instead. The Broncos would have been better with either or both of these guys in the fold. Both positions are shaky at best in terms of depth. They’ll have to make due with what they’ve got, at least for another week, against Atlanta.

Kyle, I reported this last night on one of my comments lol Sorry just trying to feel important …

if they want to add a player they dont need that is fine it just makes them remove a player from their roster. plus karma always has its way of working out

I agree with Trent… this move could end up hurting San Diego.

You know, I don’t have the hatred for San Diego like I do the Raiders. I’ve hated the Raiders since I started rooting for the Broncos as a 5 year old in 1977, so that’s a long and healthy hatred.

However, they’re moving up the list fast. It doesn’t pain me a bit to see that loudmoth SOB Rivers and his SOB teammate Igor Olashansky getting lit up this year. If karma really does exist, they have a LOT more coming to them.

I get FURIOUS when I read anything outside of Denver in regards to the Broncos and the Chargers. If you read or listen to what the national media is saying, the Chargers are having a down year for no other reason than they are decimated by injuries. If you read stuff written about the Broncos, they’re just an underachieving, untalented team who has a few nicks and scrapes.

Plus, the powder blue unis make them look like pussies.

    ORANGE AND BLUE FOREVER, BABY!!!!!

I hope this move hurts the Chargers. I am a Denver fan in Southern Cali, and everywhere I go I hear about the Chargers and Raiders. The Raiders suck so bad that it just isn’t fun to hate them anymore…but the Chargers, now that’s a team I can hate. Claiming Bennet was nothing more than a dick move on their part. All it shows me is that they are afraid of Denver. They are fully aware that Denver has a better team than they do, and are willing to pull a move like this to make sure they don’t fall even farther behind.
