First, Jay Cutler threw an interception in Broncos territory that led to three points for Miami. Two possessions later, he threw another pick, this one returned for a touchdown. Before you knew it, it was 13-0, and the Miami Dolphins (4-4) would hold on to win a 26-17 game against the Denver Broncos (4-4) in Week 9 NFL action.

The Dolphins improve to 8-1-1 in franchise history against the Broncos in the regular season. The Broncos’ 17 points marks the fifth straight game that this once league-leading offense has struggled to even tally 20 points. Despite all of these struggles, the Broncos remain one game ahead in the AFC West, turning their attention to the Cleveland Browns for a Thursday Night Football bout.

Cutler finished with three interceptions, completing just over 50% of his passes and two touchdowns. He didn’t have a lot of help – the usually dominant Broncos rushing attack was stifled to the tune of 14 yards, spoiling rookie running back Ryan Torain‘s NFL debut.

While Torain’s debut was spoiled, other rookies played huge roles in whatever offense the Broncos could muster. Fullback Peyton Hillis had an incredible game, leaping defenders and breaking tackles to the tune of 116 receiving yards and a touchdown. WR Eddie Royal returned a kickoff 95 yards to the five-yard line, then finished the job with a receiving touchdown. He finished with 69 yards receiving to add to his 100+ yards in returns.

The Dolphins defense was surprisingly stiff. Not only did Miami hold Broncos runners to just over a dozen yards, they kept Brandon Marshall without a catch until late in the third quarter.

This loss was clearly on the Broncos offense and its struggles with penalties and turnovers. The Broncos defense didn’t allow a touchdown until late in the fourth quarter, with D.J. Williams and Marlon McCree sidelined with injury.

At the end of the day, these turnovers and penalties are FIXABLE mistakes, leaving me hope that they can turn the ship around. They need to do it soon, though – frankly, it’s been two weeks too many without addressing these problems. The bye week didn’t help… maybe a short, three-day week will.

  • AKscott

what an awful PI call against marshall.. turns out to be a 10 pooint swing.. instead of being up 1 we go down 9, and eventually fall to 4-4. At the end of the day we are still in first place and our defense looks like they found a little bit of heart. I wonder about our defensive playcalling.. our corners gave way too much cushion, which is understandable when you have a guy with pennington’s deep ball threat ability (sarcasm)
why cant the corners man up some of the time?? 2 & 10 and the qb plays pitch and catch just gets old to watch.. especially when pennington was staring his reciever down the whole way.

This is fixable, the D gives me a bit of hope.. and hopefully at some point we can atone for the Hoculi call and get a few breaks our way

  • AKscott

And Kudos to Andre Hall for bringing his carries w/o a fumble streak to 1

  • kerry

well im not gonna blame the refs because that would make me just like a Chargers fan. two weeks and Shanahan cant prep his team to deal with the fish. now he only has four days to prep them for Cleveland. yeah good luck. that Chad Jackson signing sure worked out today. oh thats right he didnt play. always good to sign a guy then just sit him on the bench.

  • AKscott

Honestly i thought the team prep was there.. we shut down the wildcat by playing better against the run, which had to be priority #1 going into the bye. We didnt have the fumble problem, but we did have 2 bad picks and some dropped passes.. thats fixable..
Im sick right now, yet slightly encouraged by our D

  • Kim

I don’t know what the heck is going on with this team…..same old story…TURNOVERS….PENALTIES and the DEFENSE!! Another game we should have won but because of turnovers we lost. Shanny better have one hell of a game plan for Thursday because if we play like we have been for the past several games we will loose. I am sooooo disgusted with the Broncos right now. They better figure out what the issue is and get it fixed if we want to salvage the season let alone make a playoff spot!!!

  • bob

i said to lou from littleton on air that denver would finish 9 and 7 wow i only need 3 more loses and i win . we need a coach who will get the players to play like the should . great coaches only last so long . how many times do we have to hear the same old thing we will have to work on it , we made some mistakes , get the team to play as one and you may have a good start at getting bettter . denver is by no means a super bowl team . we have the talent they say, where is it .

  • troyn

the horrible P.i. call on marshall decided this game, far more than the call in the SD game. Hopefully with this game and the 2 bogus PI calls against Jacksonville, the league calls it even, otherwise it will be painful. Actually, other than playing the corners too deep, this was a good overall effort.

  • merc22

End of the game made me mad, with that screen and that catch by williams(that was so LUCKY)

  • Boisebroncoguy

I have been wondering all year, but more so today, why it looks like we have 8 guys on defense, and the other teams look like they have 15 playing against us. Other teams always have guys wide open, and we never seem to. It also seems that ever since the Hochuli call, the refs have been spending the rest of the season trying to even the score. I don’t know, maybe i am just angry and halucinating (sp?).

  • fan@6mightnotb@60

BoiseGuy is right. Why don’t we press if we’re not going to stop anyone anyway.

  • AKscott

well merc it doesnt help when the defender doesnt even look for the ball.. louis green man.. that play hurt.. nail in the coffin if you ask me
and nothing like bringing the house on 3 & 17 — no excuse why we gave up 16 1/2 yards on that play.. Defensive play calling today was questionable at times to say the least.
Good effort however by our D today i think. As i said before, im encouraged by how they showed up against the run today

  • Dakota Fan

Ugh- this was one of those that cause you to lean your heads back, stare at the sky and make you long for the 97-98 seasons.

What is going on with Jay? He looks like his confidence is totally gone. Are the receivers not gaining enough separation on their defenders? Obviously it sounds like I’m looking for someone to blame, but that’s not the case.

Maybe I’m relying too much on them, but I don’t collect stamps, I don’t climb mountains and I don’t raise prized race horses. This team is what I do for entertainment and right now, they’ve got me wondering what they need to do next.

By the way- my local station decided to carry the dumbass Minnesota Vikings game instead of the Broncos. After games like this, now I know how it feels to root for a team like the Vikings that suck so bad .

Help me out family- what do they do to turn it around?

  • Roy

Yep, the Broncs really crapped in their hat today. Seeing Hillis with a big day was great. How soon before we start giving our rookie defence players a look? Can’t do much worse.

  • kerry

the fact that Shanahan is still gonna have a job tomorrow is a utter joke! everybody face facts! this season is lost! we are gonna win maybe two or three more games and have a mid first round pick. just out of reach of any immediate impact defensive player. god wake up people! Shanahan is a joke. two weeks and he cant get this team ready to contend with a team that won one game last year!!! ONE GAME!! our FB was our leading receiver today. that should tell you how out of Synch this team is. Shanahan has lost his players and Cutler has no confidence. once he throws an INT he becomes an average to poor QB. then he goes to the sidelines and pouts like a girl. when Payton Manning or Tom Bardy throw INT’s, they go to the sideline, look at photos of defensive formations so they know not where to throw, and they come back and make the plays.

  • MIAbronco

i just read on espn that dj tore his mcl

  • http://www.search-this.com mark

The list of what’s wrong with the Broncos is now long and distinguished s0 perhaps it’s now easier to count what’s right with the team…

  • broncofan

Yep, its true, dj tore his mcl..what a big blow
we sure do need a running back..the denver running game is gone..we need selvin young
every week …its the same stuff with the broncos….turnovers or they cant get key stops on key 3rd downs
im not really shocked that b-marsh called out the defense and offense after the game, somebody needed too…cuz after every game they lose they say the same crap “we gotta go back to the drawing boards and correct some things” ..and shanahan will say “we are making some strides”
im putting the blame on this coaching staff…shanahan has lost his magic…the offense and defensive coordinators call questionable plays all game long….especially that 3rd and 19…shouldnt have blitz

im so frustrated rite now with the broncos!

  • Rob Bronco

There are so many things to criticize right now, I don’t even know where to start. First – Brandon Marshall gets his first catch in the THIRD QUARTER? I realize that Cutler has favored Marshall a lot during the past few weeks, but it appeared during this game that Cutler intentionally avoided throwing to Marshall. I also don’t understand why the offense has transitioned to a throw-first team. Without the run, we have no bootleg. We have no play-action. I know that our RBs have been hurt, but you HAVE to make that running game work.

Our defense did better today, but they’ve got a long way to go. We get KILLED when we play zone coverage. I would rather us play man coverage with an aggressive blitz than this zone BS we’ve been trying to put together. Every team we’ve played has slaughtered us on 3rd down conversions for two reasons: We don’t blitz enough and we concede the first down so that we don’t give up the big play. But that keeps drives alive!

Finally, the penalties. Absolutely ridiculous. Offensive Holding. Offensive PI. Facemask penalties. It’s out of control. Granted, that jackass referee calling back that touchdown for Pass Interference is an f**king joke. We all know it wasn’t PI. Don’t even get me started on referees blowing calls without any consequence. They can fine players and coaches for calling out refs, but they don’t fine refs for blowing calls?

Right now, we are not a playoff team. The Chargers are incredibly talented and if they ever get their heads out of their asses, they’ll blow right by us as we watch the Broncos close out the season at 7-9.

  • MIAbronco

im real happy that we did sign wesley woodyard right now. he may not be a brick wall like D.J., but hes real fast and was a tremendous playmaker at kentucky. trust me when i say this kid will have some flashes

  • Awesome, Austin

What the hell was the offense smoking today?

  • Awesome, Austin

By the way everybody that wants heads to roll mid season for this teams performance the Broncos are still in first place…

  • kerry

the Broncos arent in first place because they are good. they are in first place because everybody else in the AFC west just sucks. basically in first place by default….Shanahan will have his typical rhetoric about how they need to get back to the drawing board and that they are making strides. but seriously, who is buying that bullshit line anymore?? the guy needs to go! but we all know at the end of the season the blame will fall on EVERYBODY else but shanahan. again the lord of the lands kingship will go unblemished. ugh! dump this clown! someone said he lost his magic?? yeah the magic wore a number 7. thats been gone for ten years. which is to say Shanahan had no magic at all. just season after season of mediocre football teams. one good year of 13-3. and nothing since.

  • Bruce

Here’s a novel approach. Bench Cutler and start Hackney. See what happens. Jay Cutler has talked more trash this year, but hasn’t proved anything. Bronco’s are in first place because the rest of the AFC West is so pathetic. Give Hackney a try , the thought that Cutler is replaceable is exactly what he needs to straighten him up. He’s too cocky.

  • Riverscanbl&wme

Bad coaching and bad run blocking. Denver had 7 yards rushing for the day.
Slowik not putting in the right packages on defense is killing me man. They had a four wide set and we were in the 4-3 and wondered why Ginn was five yards from the closes defender (D.J.). Ginn dropped the pass but these things are not acceptable. The screen on 3rd and 17. Wow, who would have thought?
The defense played well but the cushions they gave was ridiculous. If they get behind you I can understand but to give Camirillo free 7 yard catches every other play is retarted.
I love the Broncos and I hate to say Shanahan is this or that but sometimes you have to wonder what these coaches spent 2 weeks doing? Dan Marino called us a sloppy team and I can’t disagree with that and that falls on the coach.

  • Riverscanbl&wme

Oh yeah, we should talk about how impressive our rookies are amidst all this negative talk. Hillis is a stud, Eddie is the man, and Clady is lights out.

  • Boisebroncoguy

YES! Let’s hear it for the rookies!!!! Our vets need to catch up to them.

  • kerry

yes our rookies are great. props to the rookies. Shanahan still needs to be fired!

  • AKscott

Give our D some props as well. They allowed 1 defensive TD the entire game, and they were put in some pretty bad situations with the picks and just play calling in general. Also they came up with the first INT i can remember since champ’s in week 2 (maybe im forgetting one??) For the most part they stepped it up, and the times that they didnt (the 3 and Loooongs) i think it was more a scheme problem than poor play. Is pennington to camirillo some deep threat that we needed to repect so much that we give him a 7 yard cushion each play? Hell, man him up, if they get beat deep chances are chad isnt gonna get the ball downfield anyway. He sure as hell will put it on the money 8 yards out.. why give it to him every time?!? Just baffling

  • AKscott

a bit of what B-marsh had to say (from espn.com)

Marshall no fan of defensive scheme: Fresh off his lowest catch output since becoming a starter late in his rookie season in 2006, Denver star receiver Brandon Marshall, who had two catches for 27 yards, was more focused on the game plan of Denver defensive coordinator Bob Slowik.

Marshall didn’t like the fact that Denver cornerback Karl Paymah, who replaced the injured Champ Bailey, was playing so far off of Miami receiver Greg Camarillo. He had 11 catches for 111 yards.

“When I look at it, it’s common sense, if I was a receiver going against our defense and they’re stacking the box and we’re playing a one-high defense and eight in the box, and the DBs are 10 yards off of me, I’m going to catch 10 to 12 balls a game,” Marshall ranted. “I don’t even know that receiver’s name who caught all those balls.

“Tighten up the coverage and just play ball, it’s real simple. It’s real simple. They don’t need to be 10 yards off. Tighten it up. You say they don’t do that against us, the reason why is a receiver will kill them.”

Thank you brandon!! Also keep in mind that he played safety in college basically all of his Junior season, so he does have SOME experience from the other side of the ball.. sure you can chalk some of it up to post game frustration but he’s on the money if you ask me

  • Roy

Incredible. Shanny has no one else to blame or fire but himself this year. It is all him or the staff he put in place. It is time Bowlen took some of his power away. Hire Sunquist back, or any good GM for that matter, and a real OC and DC. If Shanny wants to wear those hats, he can demote himself and get a new HC. Anyway you slice it, our team is not right. If we finish above 500 or make the playoffs it will be because of attrition, not having a great team.

What happened to our explosive offence? Shanny said “better close the playbook, people might see the kind of things that are in there.” HELLO!!!!! Let our players play. The plays we are running is akin to hunting a loin with a bb gun. It doesn’t make sense.

Sucks about DJ. Hope that means our rooks will get a look. Our current starting rookies that played today were awesome. There is nothing else that can be said about them.

  • Matt

Im with dakota fan. The Broncos are all i do for entertainment and my only hobby. Im tired of going through the week having to avoid all highlights, sports talk radio or surfing on nfl sites for fear i might catch a glimpse or hear a blurb about these horrible games. These players and coaches deserve a punch in the face for the way they have been playing. I put my damn jersey on and plan every sunday to watch these guys play and im tired of ending every week with ” oh well maybe next week, atleast the chargers lost”. Who cares! This team is playing like a terd sandwich. Stupid turnovers and costly penalties are killing us. It starts at the top. Im not ready to call for shanahans head but he needs to get some urgency going. These guys act like its friggin preseason. I was convinced that we had turned a corner this year but these guys dont know how to win. Rookies are great but you gotta teach them how to win. I could dissect these guys all day but bottom line is they dont protect the ball and they cant shut teams down. We have got to have a better showing running the ball. I dont want to get used to losing. I might aswell become a damn oakland fan then, atleast then i can go commit crimes and beat up people for no reason. I think we abandoned the run game too early. Play action is wothless without at least the fear that you might run the ball once in a half. Im not makeing excuses but the PI call on Marshall was literally one of the worst calls i have ever seen. I was sitting with a nuetral fan and he was as dumbfounded as me. We had plenty of chances all game but i have to say that was a flat out BAD call!

  • AKscott

“I dont want to get used to losing. I might aswell become a damn oakland fan then, atleast then i can go commit crimes and beat up people for no reason.”

    LMFAO

  • http://birty.blogspot.com mikebirty

Maybe its the lack of sleep but I actually thought the team played well. Ok maybe not well but well enough to win. If you put Tennesee or the Panthers or someone who’s on a roll – like the week 3 Broncos – in a 10-16 position at the start of the 4th quarter, they’ll win the game. I’m sure part of it is due to confidence. Playing another game so quickly can only be good after a game like this.

I’ll disagree with Marshall too – I thought Karl Paymah had a good game (for him). Some big hits, some good coverage but like Foxworth – if you go after him he will conceed yards, that’s why he’s not a starter. And its nice to see Peyton Hillis getting into the game plan – filled the Tony Scheffler hole perfectly.

I am less worried after this loss than I was after any of the others.

  • AKscott

i didnt take it as marsh ripping paymah, but more so marshall ripping slowik.. if anything i take it as marshall having confidence in paymah.. like wanting slowik to allow the CB’s to do what they are here for. Anybody can play off 10 yards react and make the tackle.. let em get up on the LOS and make some plays, affect WR routes..

  • MIAbronco

so…who do we draft with the 9th overall pick in the upcoming draft….. the way the AFC west is playing this year, we could be one of those below 500 dividion champs with a top ten pick

  • flbronc

i could only watch the first half, and from what i saw we didnt ignore marshall at all before the third quarter, in fact jay forced the ball to him into heavy coverage and got picked.

i have no answers for this team. the defense played decent from what i saw, holding them to field goals and getting a couple of stops in the first half. the offense was awful in the first half, royal was the only reason we scored… had we needed more than 5 yds for the td, i dont know if we’d have gotten it. jay never looked good or confident yesterday, and i’d like to know what was up with him. does his finger still hurt, was he sick, did his dog die, rusty after the bye, whatever- he didnt look right. his numbers came out good, but he sure looked uncomfortable in the first half.

Miabronco- unfortunately you might be right about our pick. i say trade it for a late first rounder and a second or early third and stockpile on defense. we need ends, cb’s, s’s and a mlb- lots of them.

  • MIAbronco

jarvis moss looked decent yesterday, so the jury is still out on him, but we definatley need another linebacker and more importantly a stud safety, but even more important then that, we may need an over haul of the front office!

One thing that does make optimistic is that this is one of the youngest teams in the nfl, so there is hope for us.

  • Bobby

If you want to hear some of BMarsh’s comments, follow this link. I think he has some good things to say.

  • Bobby
  • ssc

Riverscanbl&wme is right on about slowik mismatching personnel, having LBs in there when he should have nickel/dime sets. this week maybe you could use the lack of CB depth as an excuse, but the fact is that slowik in prior weeks would often play his 3-4 against 3 and 4 WR sets. paymah had a good game, but hey brainiac slowik, paymah’s strength is press coverage, not playing 10 yds off a receiver that doesn’t remotely have the speed to get behind him. the paymah pick came on one of the few plays where he played press, and it was against the speedy ginn — yet paymah was farther downfield on the go route than ginn was. this was a good effort by the defense that was crippled by slowik’s coaching. blitz on a 3rd-and-19 against a weak armed QB who’s like 0-for-25 on 3rd-and-longs??? brilliant logic.

oh and i like jeremy bates so far, but dude you gotta get the king-of-YAC marshall the ball with some little slants and screens and even maybe a reverse. get him the ball before he’s doubled.

  • fischdog

I know George Foster and Tatum Bell do not even play. But Dre’ Bly is a total waste of space. Every 3rd and Long…they go after Bly who usually has a 20 yard buffer between him and the receiver. He never tackles anyone low, so weak! He used to be a all or nothing corner…now he is nothing.

But Paymah looked like a beast out there…making plays, tackling, bringing attitude. Champ and Paymah and straight out release of Bly…that would make me happy.

    Pay

  • T-Money

I’m thinking that we should just look ahead to the Browns game because this was such a bitter loss that it’s makeing me sick.

    Cleavland…. Broncos. 3 days…

  • flbronc

gracious, i didnt realize we play on thursday. i just finished reading the walking wounded report from yesterday.. will we even have anyone healthy to play? is pittman going to be able to start or will hall or torain get the nod?

Any news on sheff, stokeley? or young for that matter?

  • Riverscanbl&wme

Thank you SSC! They say you need to keep a coordinator and allow him time to bring gus in that fit their system, but my nephew can match personell better than this guy. We should find a defensive minded college coach who has passion and bring him in. Get a good D-Line coach and focus all our efforts on the trenches.
The offense needs to try something new. Try starting the game in the no huddle spread offense when all of your backs are hurt. Run reverses, double reverses, screens, or let Royal do a reverse pass since he used to be a quarterback. At the very least this teams needs leadership. Is it wishfull thinking that maybe Rod could give the pre-game speech before the Cleveland game?

  • Matt

ssc has a good point. Im sure Marshall was shadowed and double covered all day but a screen or reverse would have been a good move. Just to get him involved a little bit. The offense did not adjust well the entire game. Easy for me to say now on monday morning but i feel like the offense did nothing to try and adjust to the defense. Im not saying we have to do anything pathetic like run the wildcat or anything but a reverse would have been nice.

  • Dakota Fan

Shanahan fired? I’ve said it before and I say it again: with whom will you replace him? Just because there’s been a couple of in-season firings this year, it doesn’t mean it’s time to get rid of him. The teams who are consistently poor are firing year after year and not getting anywhere.

Here’s a scenario: hire Matt Millen as the GM and Mike Nolan as the head coach. That’s about as logical as firing Shanahan.

I won’t disagree that things need to change. Here’s my best guess at what needs to happen:

    1. Shanahan has to relinquish some control. I’ll back him 100% as a coach, but he needs to let someone else make the personnel decisions.

    2. Keep the staff intact. Slowik may have made some mistakes yesterday, but all 53 players and 53 coaches (sorry, it seems like their staff is that big!!) are to blame for that one.

I’d like to be in those meetings today. I’m thinking they’re all in for it. I’d also like to be in the meeting between Shanahan and Marshall. Even if Marshall does make some legit points, he needs to do so in the locker room and in the team meetings. That’s very TO or Ocho Cinco of him to call out his team in front of millions of viewers. As much as I hate Joey Porter, he’s right. He knew how to get into Marshall’s head and he did.

Grow up, you overpaid punk. You want respect? Go out and earn it.

  • Boisebroncoguy

I’m not saying I would fire Shanahan. I’m not readt to go there yet, but, one interesting name out there might be Bill Cowher. Who knows?

  • T-Money

I don’t think it’s a coaching problem. Keep in mind that Shanahan has NOT been calling plays for 9 years. He just oversees everything and intervenes when necessary. I also don’t think it’s a talent problem. We have alot of it. I think it’s a maturity thing. I think Culter came out the first few weeks on fire but was smothers by the media and all the pressure from being the qb that has diabetes. The media is getting into his head and it’s forcing him to think he has to be the best, and not just be jay cutler.

We are still young and growing up. There are still some growing pains happening. But look at the bright side. For such a young group were are doing very well.

  • Dakota Fan

Hey Boise- great minds think alike. He’s the only available coach who I could see taking over for Shanahan.

Have you seen Jake Plummer lately out there? He must have a beard to his beltline by now!!

  • Boisebroncoguy

Jake hasn’t been seen around here, that I know of, for quite some time. All I know is that he has a place in Northern Idaho and he just hangs out there a lot. And I know he plays a lot of handball, that is about it.
