Denver Broncos wide receiver Clifford Russell, who suffered a sprained neck during Sunday’s game at Kansas City, was released from the hospital following examination and accompanied the team on its charter flight back to Denver.

Russell was taken off the field on a stretcher after spraining his neck in the fourth quarter Sunday against Kansas City. He was hurt on Kansas City’s return of the kickoff following a Denver touchdown.

He lifted his left hand and waved as he was taken off the field.

UPDATE 09/30 – Russell is up and walking.  He suffered numbness in his right arm, but is participating in team meetings and hopes to practice as soon as this week.  The Broncos will release a practice participation report on Wednesday, and we’ll have more information then.

UPDATE #2 – Clifford Russell was placed on Injured Reserve on Tuesday, ending his season. Best of luck in your recovery, Cliff.

Very glad to see Russell is okay.

I was very relieved to hear during post game reports that Clifford is ok. He didn’t look to be moving his lower half as he laid on the field and I couldn’t help flashing back to Mike Utley as I have no doubt many of us did. Take care Clifford and don’t use your head as a battering ram anymore, ok?

I (along with many others I believe) said a little prayer for Clifford. I thought the KC fans acted very respectful and were sincerely concerned for Clifford’s well being. We are all very happy to hear that he is doing better. Hang in there Clifford and take care of your self. P.S. I am a Charger fan, but when it comes to good sportsmanship, I’d like to believe we are all on the same page. Take care.

Glad to hear he’s OK! I like the West’s conference rivalries, but when someone gets hurt, It all seems so unimportant.

Undeniably great news. I agree completely Tracie

I am a KC Chiefs fan, and I have no doubt that we all were extremely concerned for Clifford Russell. Sure, we might all be extreme rivals, but no one wants to see a player hurt like that… I’m sure glad to know he’s okay. God Bless him!

Hopefully Clifford Russell will be okay. Good news that he was released from the hospital after examination. Everyone holds their breath when things like this occur. Thankfully this injury did not look like an unnecessary roughness situation but the hit Cutler took to his back following a pass looked like a purposeful attempt to hurt Cutler. I wonder why players who are guilty of viciousness of this nature are not thrown out of the game. Too many players are subjected to debilitating injuries due to vicious play.
Bumper bumping in Nascar should likewise result in expulsion from the race. Why not enact rules eliminating unnecessarily violent offenders from the games?

I was watching the game at my home in KC, and was excitted to see the Chiefs in the lead. But when I saw Clifford on the ground I thought it was more of a spine injury. I loved seeing the Chiefs trainers and over helping the Broncos trainers with Cliff. But when he raised his hand to tell everyone that he was ok;… I had a couple of man tears in my eyes.
The rivalry between us and the Broncos is huge…. But I loved seeing how the fans all were praying and hoping that he was ok. And when Cliff was wheeled off on the strecher seeing Herm Edwards the Chiefs coach come over with Dwane Bowe and the other Chiefs players tap him on the side…. It just shows the sportsman ship and the humility the players have.
I hope that your neck feels better Clifford and hope that you make a swift and speedy recovery….

So relieved to hear that he is okay. Best wishes for a speedy recovery!

I am glad to hear he’s going to be ok as well! I missed the post-game report and didn’t hear it mentioned on the news last night or this morning! It shouldn’t be this difficult to find out what happened to an injured player!

I am so glad that clifford is okay, Its nice to see the goodsportsmanship. we have practicing to our kids, keep up the good work. glad you are alright

it was truly awesome to see players from both teams seeing him off the field. these division games are always rough. i too had a couple man tears in my eyes.

I thought the injury to Russell looked just as serious as the injury to Boldin not much later on in another game. But because Boldin is more of a “big name”, it seemed as if Boldin was the only one of the two receiving any attention. I heard the updates on Boldin and wondered what had happened to Russell and why they were not addressing what had happened to his as well. Did anyone else notice this or was it just me?

  • Sheltrim

I hope Clifford is doing well. As a Chiefs fan or just as a pure football fan no one wants to see anything like that on the field. Best of luck young man, and may God be with you.

Glad to hear that Clifford is doing well, that was scary to watch. We’ll continue to pray for your recovery here.
