Look around folks, Denver sits atop the AFC at 3-0 with Buffalo and the Titans as the only other undefeated teams in the conference.  That’s right, I said conference, not Division as in AFC West.  We all know things could change in a hurry and we’re also counting out the Ravens having an early bye week thanks to Ike.  But lets face it, the AFC definitely is not what it was last year and certainly not what it was expected to be this year.

First off, the obvious factoids.  Pats lose Tom Brady, you’d have to be dead not to know this one, but it puts the automatic favorites as a team struggling to make the playoffs in a blink of an eye.  Second, the Colts have something wrong.  What’s wrong with them?  Their offensive line.  I’m surprised they haven’t snatched back Gandy to help out.  With the Indy O-line not being themselves it’s left Manning and Addai discombobulated to say the least.

Pittsburgh looks tough, but not unbeatable.  They lost a close one to a very good Eagles team today and now Big Ben is out with an injured hand and an already beat up shoulder.  As for the other undefeated teams, we know we can take it to the Titans and Buffalo just sqeaked by Oakland today, not really a concern.  So where am I going with this?

If you’re east coast biased or like I said above, dead to the world, Denver’s offense has been dominant this season.  Great thing to hear, isn’t it?  We haven’t put up points like this since the Super Bowl days and haven’t posted a 3-0 record since 2003.  I would even venture to say our offense has looked even better than that of our 97 Championship team omitting the running game of course.  The media keeps saying Cutler has all these great weapons.  These are the same people that said Denver was made up of a young inexperienced mish mash of players last year.  Where I don’t think we’re the end all be all of NFL offenses, this group just seems to click.  More importantly they have role players that do just that, fill their role.  Scheffler is not the best all around TE in the game, but he is a killer down field.  Stokley is not an every down WR, but he gets open on key third downs.  Seriously, I could talk about this stuff all day people.

We are pulling ahead of team we still have to take very seriously in the Chargers.  After all, they caught us in this situation last year.  But this is a different year and a different team.  But it could be arguably the biggest shame in the history of the Broncos if we had a completely prolific Offense only to have our Defense squander everything.  By everything I mean a real shot at a Super Bowl.  That’s right bowl, not playoff contention, not hope to make the post-season, CHAMPIONSHIP.  Now I’ve always been pretty apologetic for my Broncos defense.  I always feel like they have just have a few things to tweak here or there to be great.  Last season it was “Oh, they’re just learning this new system”.  In seasons past, it’s been “Wow, the secondary looks great but the run D isn’t there”.  Oddly enough it’s also been the other way around.  But this season they haven’t given me much to hope for.

Trust me, my hope is still there.  It’s not for lack of talent.  The defense is loaded with it.  I’m not going to repeat the merits of what we have, just that I thought we made all the right upgrades in the off-season.  Is it just Slowik finding his way as a first time coordinator?  The unit needing to gel a little more after bringing in new faces?  I don’t have that answer, but it has me concerned.  They have shored up our run stopping problems from last season, I will give them that.  Also, moving D.J. back to his old spot has made him an absolute beast once again.  The Saints game today was his coming out party as Earl mentioned earlier.  Other than those two pieces, this squad has given me nothing to get excited about.

Yes, we held the Raiders in check by only allowing 14 points in garbage time.  I thought it was a sign of things to come, but the last two games have shown it was just the lousy Raiders.  We have faced two very good offenses in these past match ups but we have not been able to stop a team on their own side of the field for the most part.  Today we made the Saints punt once, just once.  We also had that nice turnover, but no other bright spots here.  Drew Brees was able to play field general on us all day, much like Marmalard last week.   Here’s a few fun little facts that need to be locker room bulletin board material: Weeks two and three combined Denver has given up 798 yards passing. ESPN’s general consensus on the defense going into week three: “Over-rated! Seriously, could there be a more overrated pair of cornerbacks in football than Denver’s? No doubt Drew Brees, even sans Marques Colston, can give this team fits.”

We’ll see how we do against middle of the pack and lower end teams in the coming weeks.  We need to figure out how to shut down the middle and underneath soft spots in the secondary and for the love of all that is football get a pass rush.  But mark my words, if the Defense doesn’t get it’s crap together quickly this team will lose out at a shot for something special.  2008 could be a one year opportunitly for Denver to shock the league as a rising powerhouse against a conference on a downward spiral.

I think Champ played good like always. He knocked down a few balls that could have been big games. Dre got beat a few times too and that kind of bugs me. I think he’s a much better player than he is showing. I think it’s safe to say that for the most part our run defense is doing it’s job just fine. I few big plays..but that’s always been like the defense.

We need to stop getting a large lead and start playing nickle and dime packages. That’s two weeks in a row that Denver went from the “we need points” mind set to the “defend the lead” mind set. That’s a big part of why Bush and Shocky got open so often. When you run a 8-9 cover guy Zone defense, (with a 7 step drop) you’ve got a 20 yard pillow in the middle for screens and slants.

I think that denver should just throw the nickel and dime packages out, including prevent because we are horrible at it, it stick to man corners, floating safeties, and zone linebackers. And maybe, just MAYBE get a pass rush out of the front 4. Maybe sink a blitz or two in too.

Our corners are fine but our safeties and linebackers can’t cover anything. Um…. why did we see Paymah on the field again this week?

Well, the succes of the Run-D is a bit cheap. We have been up by huge numbers early in games, thus forcing the offense to throw. And maybe the defense has been good against traditional runningformations, but if the offense apllys some sort of swing pass/toss/pitch to get their back to edge quickly we simply cannot make an open field tackle. This goes also for DJ.

In all else i agree – the defense is all that’s keeping this team from a deep, deep playoff-run. I just hope the D pulls an “2007-Giants” or waits ’till the playoffs and go “2006-Indy”!!

we have a good D…we just get tired after the 12st half thats all, but getting kapman or kearney would help a ton!

    Bottom line
If you want to preasure the quarterback, rush more than three players. This approach is not working.

We have a number of problems to work out. The first is a lack of talent on the D line. Robertson disappeared yesterday, Moss was tying but needs more reps to get it going. Crowder was inactive, and didn’t show up for the Chargers game last week. Marcus Thomas seemed to play ok. Peterson was invisible, and Shaw was ?. Engleberger had the strip for Webster’s fumble recovery and return, and EB had the only sack of the game.

DJ Williams was a monster and kept things from getting out of hand. Webster(only lost helmet once) played well for the most part, but is still overrunning plays. Boss was much better than last week, due to his ankle injury and lost reps in camp and the first game against Chokeland. Winborn spelled him like last week, but Boss is getting it together.

The DBs are another story. Champ is Champ. Bly is not getting it done right now. I don’t know if its scheme or a learning curve with this years Defensive system. McCree played ok and I have no complaints. Manual had a particularly bad game. Paymah was still lost.

The optimist in me says that they are improving and will play better as the season progresses. The goal line stand was pretty good evidence that that is happening.

The pessimist in me says that we need MUCH more production from the Dline or there will be major changes (once again) in the offseason. Linebacking is ok for now give or take a helmet or two.
The backfield is going to require a major infusion of talent in the offseason, Corner and Safety will both need to be addressed.
We have known for months that the first part of the schedule was going to be deifficult, and it has lived up to expectations. It’s still way too early to consider a super bowl appearance for this team or any other in the league. Its time to let the euphoria of the Chargers victory go. We dodged a bullet yesterday against the Saints. And even though the Chefs are so bad that they should be demoted to kitchen assistants, its time to focus on getting a W at ErrorHead.

    Richard-

Well put, I guess the most troublesome things going into next off-season are: drafting, sure we can draft more defensive linemen- but we’re still waiting for the last swarm to develop. Not really an option, so let’s move onto free agency, Albert Haynesworth should be available this off-season, but with the money he’s going to need… I’m not sure who Denver’s going to rearrange for that one.

This whole situation is flat out disturbing. When will Dumervil’s performance start to match his previous years, is Moss really a bust or simply not developed yet and will Marcus Thomas & Tim Crowder start performing at the caliber that they’re expected to. On to Dewayne Robertson for a second, he’s done well in my opinion, but as I pointed out during the live blog- he is the 9th highest paid player in the NFL.

pash rush, pash rush, pash rush, we aint got any.

broncos should really consider blitz blitz blitz and maybe more blitz.

our defense is bad but why not gamble and bring more to the pash rush? linebacker? corners? safties? i rather see our defense burn in flames than dieing a slow death. at least that will prob be more fun to watch.

  • BroncoFan18

Why didn’t we see any blitzes from the defense all game long? Brees sat back in the pocket with all day to throw the ball. We are giving up big yardage without blitzing, so what’s to lose by sending a couple more guys at the quarterback.

The problem with Dumervil is that all the opponent has to do is double him to take him out of the game. And because we have no one else (right now) on the d-line who is a star, that’s all opposing teams need to do.

Pass rush is DEFINITELY the issue right now.

Agree with everything said, but let’s not poo-poo the faiduhs. Denver caught them overconfident, game 1. Pure and simple. I guarantee the 2nd game won’t be such a pushover, if Denver’s D doesn’t get fixed.
Hopefully, this next game against KC will allow the D a little bit of a rest, and Champ can show why he’s so highly spoke of. Stop Johnson, and I could see Denver scoring “half-a-hundred” on ’em.

I’ll reserve judgement on the “D” until after next weekend. Those were two really good offenses we all just saw the last two weeks. Don’t forget how good the defense looked against the Raiders. That game could have well been a shutout if Mike so wanted. I see both of those teams (SD & NO) making the playoffs, even with the 1-2 starts. There will be no excuse for not stopping KC though. No excuse if our offense doesn’t really put it to them too. Shut them down as expected and I’d say the Broncos will be well on their way to a division title… Prediction: 34-10 Denver.
