The year was 867 C.E. and Vikings (not those Vikings, easy…) from Sjaelland and Uppsala were heading for Scotland. Aebbe the Younger (now known as St. Aebbe), the Mother Superior, received news of the upcoming raid; she gathered her nuns and quickly informed them that they must immediately disfigure their faces to make themselves unappealing to the Vikings. With this, St. Abbe hoped to preserve their chastity. Aebbe herself cut off her nose along with her upper lip. The nuns followed suit and did the same.

When the Vikings arrived, disgusted by the site of the nuns, they burned the entire building to the ground.

The date was January 20, 2008.

“It hurts…” Philip Rivers said.

“We had a chance. I know that’s no consolation,” said Rivers. “People didn’t think it would be close, but not us. We expected to win.”

He wasn’t talking about his surgically repaired A.C.L., which he had had surgery on the week prior, he was referring to the loss in the San Diego Chargers AFC Championship game to the New England Patriots.

You know the story, Philip Rivers miraculously returns from knee surgery to play in the AFC Championship game with a protective brace. He finished the game with 37 attempts, 19 completions, 211 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions. Miraculous indeed.

Quick question, what would he have done, had the Chargers won?

Think his knee was feeling better following the game against the Patriots? Or should he just have taken a backseat and let backup quarterback Billy Volek lead the team, as he’d done the week prior against the Indianapolis Colts. Volek, you will remember took the reigns from the injured Rivers went three for four on passes and ran in for the game winning touchdown.

Enter Shawn Merriman, who despite a torn P.C.L. and L.C.L. in his knee has been cleared by the team to play…

Seriously. Al Wilson, one year removed from a Pro Bowl season, cannot get a look from any team in the NFL and Merriman’s likely to start week one for the Chargers.

This is a win at all costs season for the Chargers, obviously and they themselves know that Merriman isn’t likely to last. Every doctor Merriman has seen recommended surgery. The Chargers realize that they’re putting this man’s career at risk, but don’t stress they’ve just extended his backup Jyles Tucker’s contract. The Chargers signed a man with six games worth of NFL playing time to a five-year deal worth more than 14 million. Six million of it is guaranteed, did I mention he was an undrafted free agent in 2007? Because, he was.

Wow, just wow… This is the organization that regularly employs Philip Rivers, go figure. Being a life-long Broncos fan, I’ve never really had a thing against anybody in the AFC West except for the Chargers. This year, I’m turning it up a notch and this is why. They fired Marty Schottenheimer (spelled it correctly with no spell check thank you) after an incredible season, despite that talent available on the field and now they’re literally placing the livelihood of one of their best defensive players ever on the line. Super Bowl contender indeed, but where is the line drawn?

Agreed on all counts but ultimately it comes down to Merriman. He’s the one at risk.

  • Danish Denver-fan!

I live 200 miles from Sjaelland (Sjælland).

Being a Dane, you’ve gotta wave your flag when Denmark enters the conversation.

Anyway, i agree on your views.

  • flbronc

i agree with ya, except the point where you mention that you never had any beef with any afc west team other than san diego (which means a whales vagina).

I hate the raiders with the core of my football being. look in their stands and front office and that will tell you why.

  • MIAbronco

did you know that frequent steroid use leads to weakened ligaments….hmm. there may be a connection here. oh and phillip rivers has a big head and hes on a magic ride that is the san diego chargers, im kinda curious as to whether or not the giants would have still won the super bowl last year if phylis was in charge, sans the trade

  • robtink242

I love the nfl it’s just great. and i’ve been a bronco fan all my life and i realize players want to play. but, what the chargers organization is wrong merriman is one chop block from a wheel chair for a long time. all this for a CHANCE of winning the super bowl. this is just wrong!

  • MIAbronco

i hope its a chop block courtesy of the denver zone blocking scheme

  • kerry

im glad Merriman is gonna be playing against us. that way when we kick the Chargers ass there wont be any excuse like “oh we didnt have Merriman” or any king of whining like that.

  • chargerbomb

LOL at Bronco fans acting like they have any type of moral high ground. This is the same team that broke Jamal Williams’ ankle on an illegal downfield clip back in 2002, and tried to injure Igor Olshansky by diving at his knees … on a spike. The same team that is regularly cited as one of the dirtiest teams in the NFL. But heck, I guess it’s alright to hurt players as long as they play on the opposition.

    Be careful about casting stones.

    CB,

Don’t believe for a second that every team in the NFL won’t be sending chop blocks Merriman’s way. Foolish decision to let Merriman keep playing.

  • chargerbomb

After suffering the injury against the Titans last year, Merriman played 2 regular season games and 3 playoff games. That included games against the Broncos on Christmas Eve and against the Titans in the playoffs. His knee held up then, and I expect it to again this season.

He’ll play with a brace, and they will rotate him with Jyles Tucker quite a bit. But I think he’ll be able to manage it.

  • SivNiz

The great thing this is that we’ll find out September 14th, I know I’ll be there!

Broncos win on a TD pass to Sheffler :)

  • OC Bronco

This is Merriman’s decision not the Chargers. But of course the Chargers wouldn’t force him to sit this year out when they know they have to pay him regardless.
Merriman’s decision is based on cash. He wants his big pay day in 2 years when his contract runs out. Typically after the type of surgery he needs a player’s effectiveness decreases and he knows that so he is going to go all out and force something after this year.
Let’s not get all high and mighty. We don’t mind that Ben Hamiliton is playing this year and neither does the NFL or Ben Hamilton. Supposedly no risk? Sure.

  • Jaiu

Don’t other teams have their own fansites for their fans to visit, like WhalesVaginaChokers.net?

OC Bronco- Agreed, it is Merriman’s decision. It was the Chargers who passed him for a physical though. That’s kind of the point of the article. They passed him on his physical, then gave his backup a contract extension. They’ve gone leaps and bounds above the Raiders front office in my opinion.

Chargerbomb- Good to have you, yes there are several references to Denver being the dirtiest team in the NFL. If our blocks were cheating, why hasn’t the NFL taken action? We’ve been blocking the same way since 1996. The spike play was rediculous and I don’t know what the circumstances were, it was most likely retalitory, but either way it was completely uncalled for.
