So, I actually set the alarm, woke up at 1am and watched the whole game (ending at 4am this morning). Work is going to suck this morning. :(

Let’s take a look at some of my thoughts and predictions from before the game versus what we saw on the field against Houston…

Young headlines Youth at RB –
Selvin Young was average versus Houston’s first team defense. He did well catching out of the back field and did have a nice run called back by a penalty. However, four attempts for only 3 yards rushing is nothing to write home about. Michael Pittman was ok with 20 yards on four attempts. Alridge did break one run for an impressive gain, but was contained well on his three other attempts. And that leaves Andre Hall. Granted, Hall had the assistance of the starting (or nearly the starting) O-line playing the rest of the first half; however, he still managed to impress by racking up 43 yards on 8 attempts.

I don’t think this will alter the starting line up next week. I would imagine Hall will remain #2 and get another opportunity to show off his skills next weekend.

The Man in the Middle –
Well, I said Nate Webster would lose his hat twice… he only lost it once. Sorry folks. :(
I think the one player I didn’t even notice during the game was Niko Koutouvides. The statistic boys say Niko had a tackle, but I must have missed it. The only thing I saw Niko doing was waving his arms and pointing alot before the snap with little impact in the area of putting hits on the Texans. I’m not anti-Niko, I just wasn’t all that impressed… and when you add to this the STUNNING play of LB Wesley Woodyard and the solid play from guys like Winborn and Beck, Niko’s night looks even weeker.

Webster only recorded 3 tackles, but was EVERYWHERE. I think he will obviously keeps his starting job for this week and we should see more helmet-flying action from him this weekend!

New faces on the ole D-line –
WE STOPPED THE RUN!!!! That’s right folks, our new first string defense (minus D-Rod) held the Texan’s first string offense to only 17 yards rushing in the first quarter! I was SO blown away by our run stopping, I hardly noticed much else.

However, we didn’t get a sack until late, late in the game. When was the last time we didn’t hear something from Elvis Dumervil? I’ll credit that to Alex Gibbs… Let’s see what kind of pressure our first teamers can put on Dallas this weekend before we get too worried. :)

Royal Treatment –
Well I think we say that Eddie Royal did well in his first NFL game. Nothing mind-blowing, but he made a couple tough catches and showed that he was tough enough to stick it out over the middle. And, Brandon Marshall made catching Cutler passes look easy as usual.
However, I was rather disappointed in the lack of excitement or highlights from our other wideouts.
TE Tony Scheffler, coming in with the second teamers, had the best night of this group putting up 47 yards on 3 catches. That might improve his stock this week, but he’ll have to block better as well.
Nate Jackson seems to be providing reliable service on the first team, but Tony may have raised the bar a bit after this game – We’ll wait and see

The tale of two Ryans –
I hate to say it, but I was pretty accurate on the Ryan and Ryan issue. Ryan Clady didn’t let Mario get to Cutler, but he was pushed to his limit on almost every play. Mario did have a good quarter with a couple stops behind the line.
Ryan Harris didn’t just stuggle, he got his ass handed to him. What was that? Four Penalties for +30 yards? And on top of that, it looked like he was getting beaten regularly on that side.
On the positive side, the middle of our O-line looked solid.

Ryan Harris needs to get his head on straight. One more game like Saturday’s and he could be watching the rest of preseason (and the season) from the bench or worse.

Matt Prater at Houston
(Ronald Martinez/Getty Images)

Enough Prattle about Prater –
Well, Matt Prater had his first taste of the NFL on Saturday. For anyone crying to end the ‘meaningless’ preseason, please see Prater’s first Field Goal attempt as proof positive our young guys need a bit of game experience before diving into the games that ‘count.’ Prater calmed down after his first miss and connected on the next three.

SPECIAL TEAMS NOTE:
It was very nice seeing some plays being made on ST. Jamie Winborn and Cecil Sapp had great plays on a coverage team that did a good job of limiting the Texan’s return game. The one blowout was the last Houston possession that started with Slaton’s 39 yard return.

Our returners also did well. Eddie Royal returned two kickoffs for 21 and 27 yards. Andre Hall has two returns for 20 yards each and even Alridge had a 23 yard return.

JD, very good analysis. I did like Clady’s work against the BEST DE. He will need to improve his initial punch.
I disagree some on Harris. Yes he did line up wrong on the screen and he did have the false start with Nate but my count has him and Kuper getting most of the rushing yards. But do agree in that he needs to make improvement before real games.
The OL seemed to get confused on a couple of calls. Some players blocked one way and the others the opposite.
Hall is the solid #2 RB. Alridge will make 53.
First half DL player good. DJ was good but rest of #1’s LB looked weak. Right on the analysis of Niko, he really needs to improve.
Barrett and Woodyard always showed up at the ball. Both will make 53.
My overall grade is a C, nothing really great but nothing really bad.
Lets see the improvement against Dallas.

I believe Young played a lot better than the stat sheet indicates. He had good runs after the catch, and when any kind of hole was opened for him, he hit it well. It’s not entirely his fault the play gets blown up in the backfield.

Clady had an up and down game, now that I’ve seen it with my own eyes on a decent sized TV. I thought he did very well in pass protection, but his run blocking was horrid. Simply horrid. More than once he reached the second level, started blocking a linebacker, then got tossed around like a rag doll.

Cutler has me more excited for this season than anything else.

What about Patrick Ramsey? I’m overseas right now so i couldnt catch the game but his numbers looked pretty awful. In the past Mike has only kept 2 QB’s. From what I’ve read in camp Ramsey’s looked pretty bad and Hackney has looked pretty good. Any thoughts on how the #2 spot plays out? Do we go with a young QB to back up Jay, look towards the FA market, stick with Ramsey??

  • http://broncotalk.net Kyle

The knock on Hackney is his height. Meanwhile, Ramsey has NFL experience and has actually been productive, throwing just a few more touchdowns than INTs in his career. It’s hard to let a “known commodity” go for someone whose physical attributes gives you an uneasy feeling in your stomach.

That’s the disclaimer – why I think, at the end of the day, the Broncos will keep Ramsey. What I think they SHOULD do, though, is cut Ramsey, who hasn’t showed anything this season (or last), while Hackney would more likely put the fear of God in our opponent.

JD you are a warrior getting up in the middle of the night to give your analysis…. on a school night no less. Great insight, it’s appreciated out here.
I’m giving up on Ryan Harris. Quite frankly, outside of puff pieces I haven’t heard a great thing about him since his junior year at ND.

  • BH

I too got up, but thanks to a newborn. I guess that means I don’t match your dedication. I have to agree with your analysis. I haven’t made it through the entire game yet, but I am concerned about this year. We have made some important steps, but I think that we are still a year of development and another good off season away:

    1. What is the plan if Boss goes down at SSLB? With DJ and Webster on the field, we are right back to where we started from. Woodyard is not the answer, because I believe he is seen as a WLB. DJ will not move to SSLB, at least he said so. If Louis Green is capable, why didn’t he break into the starting line up last year?

    2. The DL was disappointing. Another season with nothing special? They stopped the run, but there was very little pressure. Does vanilla defense explain this, or is the Chargers OL going to run us over again?

    3. Is Ryan Harris going to develop? We heard that he was getting burned in camp, then he got burned in the game? Will he develop? If not, I guess that it will be back to Pears, maybe Kuper. Still, not much of an improvement over last year. I think that Clady will be great. Even if Harris works out, we are probably a year of development away on the OL.

    4. #1 RB, we need one. We’ll get buy, but I don’t think that the Chargers will fear our stable. Seems like the Eagles/Westbrook dink and dunk screen type offense might best suit this crew.

    5. WRs. You can see what Marshall means to the team. Why does he have to miss the Chargers game! Ughh! Am excited about the future here. Again, though, Royal has some learnin’ to do.

This team could be a lot like the 80s Elway teams where he had to carry the team on his back. I really enjoy watching Cutler.

Overall, I think the team has improved, made some critical talent acquisitions in the off season, but has taken just a little over half of the steps that it needs to take to be a power house again. With Boss Bailey’s injury history, I really am not sure that he is going to be the solution at SSLB. We are still mediocre at MLB. Not really sure how to grade the Safety postion, but are probably a year of development away there (an Abdullah/Barrett tandem) perhaps? DL is still developing. OL is developing. RB is probably still missing. Overall, probably not strong enough to beat the Chargers and Cowboys of the world, but we are getting within striking distance.

The preseason Cowboys game last year was a real indicator of a disappointing season, it will be very interesting to see how well Denver competes this week. The Chargers really looked good against the Cowboys this weekend.

Also, I don’t know if anyone noticed, but Elam missed a 48 yard FG wide right.

  • OC Bronco

One final note, are we ever going to spend smart money in free agency?!? I know I am jumping the gun as the season hasn’t even started but Shanahan’s track record is horrible and if Niko and Colbert don’t show up this year it is even more money wasted on non-contributors and mediocrity AGAIN….

  • AKscott

Thanks Kyle.. although i disagree with your (hopefully joking)comment about Hackney putting the fear of god in ANYBODY, i personally saw enough of Ramsey in the Detroit game last year to be more than willing to explore other options, including developing Hackney.
BH said it right in the post above i really enjoy watching Cutler.. how can you not???
God forbid he goes down and we have to watch Ramsey toss around misguided passes for the rest of the season- be nice to have a solid #2 – even if he’s a bit small and inexperienced

  • http://Broncotalk Ben

Hey, why aren’t we hearing anything about hackney overtaking ramsey 4 the 2nd string QB job, i have been 2 numberous training camps and each time hackney has overplayed ramsey alng w/ the pre-season game.

  • TJ

I’m just hoping that Holland will be in shape and works his way back into the starting RG position. Then they can move Kuper over to RT where he will be a huge upgrade over Harris. Clady will be fine. He won’t be going against too many more people as sick as Mario Williams this season. Cutler looked awesome. He will be fun to watch this year and I believe he will carry this team all season. What was not mentioned in this post was how horrible the Red Zone offense was. How many years does it take to get over that hump?! They’ve got to score points! The defense still has alot of work to do. That’s all I can say about them.

  • http://birty.blogspot.com mikebirty

Montrae Holland needs to keep on the slimfast and get back on the field asap.

After the Favre effect has died down and everyone has sorted out their QBs and released who they are going to release – I wonder if the Broncos would consider looking for a different back up. Is there anyone of any note without a team?

  • Lon

Culpepper is still available. He’s way past his prime but I would think he would still be better than Ramsey. He stinks!

  • rcsodak

Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t this the FIRST preseason game for the Broncos?
Geez, it’s like ya’ll expect perfection from all of the players, regardless of how long they’ve been with the team/league.
This is a week by week endeavor. This is where we start to see if play improves, or is stagnant.
    I’m hoping for the former.

  • Person

I dont mean to sound like a broken record, but this is preseason.

    Jay Cutler… thank god!

The D-line looked good without D-Rob. Marcus Thomas should have a great year. I’m not too certain anymore about how great an idea it was to trade up in the first round for a 245 pound DE Jarvis Moss.

    Running backs… don’t worry.

The O-line… Clady had Mario Williams basically tell him “Welcome to the NFL BIOTCH!” It’s okay though, because its Mario Williams who is possibly the best DE in the NFL right now. Clady will do well. On the other hand… Ryan Harris… he is not reassuring of fans knowing that he has to go up against the San Diego D-line twice. Work is needed.

Ramsey is the #2 because of NFL experience as being a Redskins starter. I live in Virginia, so I’ve grown up around the Redskins craze. Ramsey’s “NFL experience” is really more mental damage than anything else. They brought the ancient Mark Brunell in to start over Ramsey. So I beg Mike Shanahan, PLEASE DO NOT KEEP PATRICK RAMSEY!

All in all, it was a first game of the year. We should pay a lot more attention this saturday against the Cowboys.

  • Dario

I thought Prater was supposed to be some wizard at kickoffs. Is incredible kickoffs to the goalline or 5 yard line now considered incredible? There’s nothing positive about missing a 30 yard field goal. I still think that kicking is a big question mark.

Koutouvides looked really outclassed against the Texan second round offensive linemen/FBs. He was bouncing off tackles. He wasn’t standing up blockers but avoiding them. Woodyard looked better than K-man.

I thought Clady was just fine, Williams is a double-team kind of player and he did pretty well on the pass rush 1 on 1.
