Name: Hamza Abdullah
Height – Weight: 6’2″ – 216 lbs.
Position: Strong Safety
Age – Experience: 24 – 4
College: Washington State

Hamza Abdullah, a 7th round choice in 2005 by Tampa Bay, has had the luxury of learning on the bench the past several years. After suiting for one game in 2005 and contributing to special teams in 2006, Abdullah saw his most significant game action in 2007, earning a starting role and playing fairly well overall. He started in 8 games, tallying 48 tackles with 2 forced fumbles and 7 passes defensed.

The Good: Abdullah is the fastest safety on the roster and arguably has the most upside. While he hasn’t tallied an INT yet, he has a nose for the ball with 7 passes defensed and a few tipped balls that led to Bronco interceptions. He isn’t afraid to get his nose dirty in run defense, either.

The Bad: His infamous whiff on Thursday Night Football against the Texans is not an indication of his play overall, yet it stuck in many fans’ minds. He started out strong as a starter, but his impact tailed off as the season went on. He only tallied 2 tackles in each of the last two weeks of the season (in comparison, his first start against KC netted him 9 solo tackles and 2 passes defensed).

Status: Incumbent starter. Signed through 2008. The Broncos added free agents Marlon McCree and Marquand Manuel to compete for starting roles, and rookie Josh Barrett is a project the Broncos hope to develop in much the same way they did with Abdullah in 2006. Abdullah’s starting role is by no means guaranteed – he will have to earn it in training camp.

    I like Abdullah. He’s a big time hitter. But I have to disagree with one statement you made. Barrett is now hands down the fastest safety on the roster.

    Do I feel like being a smartass and saying Barrett isn’t technically on the roster because he hasn’t signed yet? Nah. You’re right. Barrett’s fast, but don’t underestimate Abdullah’s speed either.

    I still want to see what Hamza would do with a consistent starting safety next to him. Last year there was so many changes, including Foxy having to fill in, I don’t think he had chance to settle in and show what he can do. Too much of it was figuring out where the other safety was and also switching base defense mid-season too can’t have helped a young guy.

    I really dont know much about Hamza except for what i have heard because on the East Coast i dont get much access to Bronco games, however, i found this at SI and figured it was worth posting.

    Obviously, a 40-time is not the only important stat and is not always indicative of a players game speed but, and maybe a person who has seen the Broncos play more than i have, as opposed to someone who mostly gets the highlights and boxscore, but that doesnt seem that fast.

    i look at things like this. hamza has this year to prove he can be a solid starter for this team. if he can show he can be solid then he can be a starter for us next year. and next year we could have a very fast and young group of safeties with Barrett and Abdullah. Lynch, Mccree, and Manuel all have one year deals so all three will more then likely be gone. Abdullah has to win the starting job and Barrett has to learn everything he can from John Lynch. im on the fence about Abdullah. his famous whiff is still fresh on my mind. and with his speed he should have had some INT’s last year. his field awareness is a concern.
