There were several items on the agenda at this week’s NFL Owners’ Meetings. Some of them passed, while others were tabled for later. Here’s a short list:

Items that passed:

  • Radio communication devices will now be added to one defensive player’s helmet per team. The Broncos would likely employ WLB D.J. Williams or CB Champ Bailey in that regard, although if S John Lynch competes and keeps his starting job I could see him being the signal caller.
  • The forceout rule is no more (where a wide receiver’s catch can still be counted as a completion if he was pushed out before his feet hit the turf), in attempts to keep the calls more consistent. Controversial rule to begin with… no surprise.
  • Face mask penalties of the minor variety have been removed altogether… only significant contact that tugs or twists the helmet will be called, at only the 15-yard length. Love this move.

Items that went down in flames (possibly just for now):

  • The playoffs will not be re-seeded so wild card teams with better records would get the home field advantage instead of division winners. Was never a fan of the idea, but wasn’t opposed to it, either.
  • Wear your hair as long as you like, NFL players! Watch out for those locks, Larry Johnson.

Here’s a rule for them to bring in next year –

15 yard, loss of down, unsportsman-like conduct for any receiver who turns to an official and pleads or motions for a pass-interference penalty.

Beautiful. Thanks for the update kyle

    Hate the no force-out rule.

REALLY hate the no 5yd facemask rule. It makes the penalty even more subjective than it was before. Awful.

I disagree Herc. So many simple bumps of the face mask were getting called. It happens. While it may have only been a 5-yard penalty, but it could completely kill an interception or other big play, giving the other team another down. Ridiculous.

I’m neutral on the force out rule

I sort of meh on the facemask penalty. Since there wasn’t automatic first down given for the 5 yard variety, although it did give teams a lot of first downs for something pretty weak.

I’m a defensive person at heart. So I lean more on the side being happy that it’s gone, and don’t get me started on the helmet to helmet thing. I’m glad they did away with the force out rule. If a receiver jumps up to catch the ball on the sideline, clutching in mid air and you can’t force him out, how are you supposed to defend against it? You should be able to clean him out, if his feet don’t land in bounds too bad for him, throw to the middle of the field. I personally don’t like how offense minded the NFL has become in the last 15 years or so, even though I can understand why they do it.

I tell you a rule that I’ve been pushing for for a very long time: Pass interference = 15 yards. It’s a game changing penalty the way it is right now.

  • http://broncotalk.net Kyle

    Completely agree there

  • http://www.broncotalk.net Josh Temple

I agree there too Herc. I get tired of the” I have a tall fast receiver strategy” (Randy Moss, TO) so I’m going to overthrow him a few feet (for no chance of an int) too high on the deep end zone pass and see if I can catch a flag but keep it close enough for it to be considered “catchable” and hope to draw the flag every time.

  • azbronco7

    wow… that’s a detailed strategy Josh. :)

pass interference has always been crap. but if a corner gets beat deep, wouldn’t he just shove the WR every time? Rather have 15 yards than 60. Keeps the DBs honest and the WRs dramatic!

True az, there in lies the problem, you can’t design a perfect rule for it, just hope the refs aren’t so ticky tacky and we keep the status quo.
