So, Why Are We Not Pursuing D.J. Hackett?

There are reports flying all around the world of the NFL that the Redskins and the Buccaneers are trying to staple down D.J. Hackett. Seattle would like to keep him, but they’re not going to give him the money he wants when they’re deep at the position with Branch, Engram, and Burleson. My question is this… Why aren’t we at least trying to see what the guy wants pay wise to join the team? Word on the street is that he wants big money to join a team, something Dan Snyder hasn’t had any problem doing in the past. The only thing is… I don’t think he is going to get it. If someone were going to grossly overpay for a wide out this off season, that ship has already sailed. Lets face it, the guy’s biggest negative is that he is oft injured. He’s also been called “soft” recently.

All that being said, the guy is a play maker. In the four regular season games he was healthy last season, he typically had between 50-100 yards and a touchdown in each. In the playoffs he came out and helped dismantle the Redskins, this being one reason they are going after him, and the D.C. media recognized this as well. I doubt he’s getting big offers, but probably something worthy of his talent. Hell, even the Skins are being prudent this go around. He was a late round pick that blossomed in to a good starting receiver, remind you of anyone? I like that he went to CU even though I’m not really a college football fan, it just seems guys like to come back and play in their college state. Case in point: Daniel Graham and Chad Brown. Brown never got to come back to Denver, but tried on a number of occasions. I think the Denver Post even tried to elude to Hackett in this article, but didnt really seem to make any point with their crack sports writing of late. (I really miss having Adam Schefter in town, but that’s a different story for a different day)

Lets be frank, I’m not that thrilled with the signing of Keary Colbert. I think he can grow on the team, and hopefully can be a starter. Marshall is still young, and needs another threat to help keep heat off of him. A strong tandem of receivers will get much further in the NFL than one great receiver. When the writing was on the wall for Javon, I thought that Denver was going to make a play for a free agent receiver. Not necessarily a flashy guy, but a consistent player nonetheless. I think that’s what Hackett could bring to the Broncos out of the wide outs left on the market.
