The Broncos moved to the league-mandated 53 players today, releasing 21 players along the way. Most notable are starting fullback Kyle Johnson and recently-acquired defensive tackle Jimmy Kennedy.

The entire list of roster cuts made today are listed below.

Other notable cuts include Greg Eslinger, Quincy Morgan, and Steve Cargile, who had a really good preseason for the Broncos. Defensive end Kenny Peterson was moved to the reserved/suspended list (remember that he was cut the day before training camp only to be re-signed the next day, so he is definitely on thin ice).

My take: Johnson has always been a personal favorite of mine – it has a lot to do with the weekly interviews he has done on Sirius NFL Radio, but I always thought he had great clutch hands and was a great team player. Kennedy’s release pisses me off because we gave up a 6th round pick for a guy who never saw a snap as a Bronco. It also thins our defensive tackle corp, which was already thinned from the trade of Gerard Warren and the injury of Ebenezer Ekuban (who played DT in dime packages all camp long).

Tomorrow the team can begin forming its 8-man practice squad, and I would expect Eslinger, Cargile, either Hackney or Parsons, Mark Fenton and Kevin House to be serious practice squad contenders. Players like Kyle Johnson, Jimmy Kennedy and Quincy Morgan will be hard to keep on the team and will likely find work elsewhere.

Once a player has suited up for 9 games, he no longer has practice squad eligibility. So Kevin House, who suited up for 16 games with the Chargers, is not going to be on anybody’s practice squad. Neither will Kennedy, Johnson or Morgan.

I expect our practice squad to include Akah, Fenton, Hackney, Eslinger, Martinez, and possibly a few guys the team liked cut from other teams. Assuming Eslinger survives waivers, but unproven centers aren’t a super valuable commodity in the league. But you never know.

I had heard about practice squad eligibility requirements before this, but hadn’t known exactly what they were. It’s amazing how much I learn from my readers ever week…

Thanks for the info. I also think undrafted rookies Steven Harris and Roderick Rogers have a good chance of making the practice squad.

Excellent. Between the two of us we nailed 6 of 8. I was wrong on akah and I should not have missed Cargile; we all know how much the team loves him.
