By 2pm today Denver, and the rest of the league, must have their rosters down to 75 men. Several sources are saying that the Broncos have begun trimming their roster before today’s deadline.

Eight Broncos were not at practice today leading many in the media to speculate that those players would be cut. Among those players were D-linemen Kenard Lang and Demetrin Veal, WR’s David Kircus and David Terrell, RB Cedric Cobbs, FB Troy Fleming, TE Teyo Johnson and Kicker Brandon Pace.

Kenard Lang will likely be the biggest story as he was a starter last year and part of this year’s ‘Jim Bates Purge’. But out of this group I’m most disappointed in losing David Kircus. I just always liked Circus-Kircus. He’s had some acrobatic catches and made some clutch plays for us last year. However, the knock on him was always consistency and Shanahan has a zero-tolerance for failing in that department. There may be a few media-types that pretend that Kircus’ run-in with the law this off-season was a factor, but I think that’s way off the mark. Shanahan has already covered that and this cut is all about David’s lack of consistency during practice and games.

Also in the group is often-released WR David Terrell. This one is hardly a surprise as we have several key receivers back from injury and now seem to have the depth we didn’t have all during training camp. Same with Cobbs, who was signed after injuries to Mike Bell,Travis Henry and Andre Hall — all of which are back at practice.

FB Troy Fleming is a bit surprising, as he has had a pretty good camp and has good chemistry with Travis Henry, but Kyle Johnson is playing extremely well, and the fight we thought would happen at fullback this year never really materialized. Also, Sapp will be able to play both RB and FB this season freeing up a slot at one of those positions.

TE Teyo Johnson wasn’t much of a shock as he is well behind Daniel Graham, Tony Scheffler, Steven Alexander and Nate Jackson (who rocked vs Cleveland). Chad Mustard can also play TE in a pinch.

Brandon Pace, was brought in to give our kickers some competition, but I think the only fight we have this year is in the punting area. Jason Elam will clearly be our starting field goal guy again this year, so this is not surprising either.

None of these are official until announced by Dove Valley, so we’ll keep you up to date as we hear any news!
