Sometimes, it’s not about necessarily outplaying your opponent. Sometimes, it’s about keeping your composure. It’s about staying the course.

Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton out-threw Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning 299 yards to 291. The Bengals outgained the Broncos 366 to 359 yards. The Bengals earned two more first downs than the Broncos, and they forced two Denver turnovers while only surrendering one.

But special teams proved to be a huge X-factor in favor of the Broncos on Sunday, who escape Ohio with a hard-fought 31-23 win. A missed Mike Nugent field goal at the end of the first half left the Bengals trailing 10-3, then the Broncos’ Trindon Holliday returned the second half’s opening kickoff 105 yards for a franchise-record-breaking, game-changing touchdown. Those turned out to be the difference-makers.

Along with a very resilient Denver team.

Because while Holliday was able to run away with the touchdown, the Broncos weren’t able to run away with the game. Peyton Manning was intercepted twice — on back-to-back pass attempts in the third quarter — that led to 10 Bengals points and ultimately saw the Broncos’ 14-point lead disappear into a three-point deficit.

Then Manning and the Broncos, who have been terrific in fourth quarters this season, kept their composure while the Bengals lost theirs. Penalties, sacks, and an interception suddenly ailed the Bengals in waves, while a cool and confident Peyton Manning finished two drives with touchdown passes to Joel Dreessen and Eric Decker to retake the lead. The Bengals’ last-minute comeback effort fell short, ending this physically-demanding roller coaster of a game with the Broncos’ fifth win of the season.

It was a bit of a wake-up call for the Broncos, who were flying perhaps a little too high following statement wins against the San Diego Chargers and New Orleans Saints. Still, a win in the NFL is a win, and the Broncos showed they can keep cool under pressure and despite their own mistakes. Who gets your game ball, Broncos fans?

Manning… for making the entire team feel confident that, even through adversity, no game is ever out of reach and each of the three teams can play inspired football. Stars are emerging on each squad. You can feel it!

Monty, sorry, but Dalton did not out-throw Manning, just because he got eight whole yards more. Dalton had to throw seven more passes to get that yardage, and he completed 61.9%. Manning, on the other hand, completed 77.1%! Check out the passer ratings: Manning 105.8, Dalton 81.3. Dalton did not belong on the same field as Manning.

I believe Monty meant Dalton “out-threw” Manning in terms of yards.

  • BRONCOS4LIFE

I agree with you man!!! Go Broncos! its going to be a good year :) Cant wait to see what happens in December and January :) Go Broncos!

  • Leo Maes

I can’t believe nobody has gave the game ball to Tony & Chris… these guys are HUNGRY!!!

  • herc_rock

Getting a win despite not playing all that great and making a handful of potential game-killing mistakes is HUGE.
Game ball to Holliday. It’s about time that guy showed us something…

  • Bryan

I agree with Holliday for a game ball. Dude is lightning fast. If he can get to out to our 40, then he’s going to the house. But man, everytime I see him fielding the punts, I hold my breath and say “Please hold on to the ball”…But that’s only because of the first punt he had in a Broncos uni. If he wouldn’t have muffed that one, I wouldn’t be so nervous.

I tell you what..all week long Cincy felt like a trap game. I expected us to win because we’re supposed to beat these kind of teams. But PFM was right, Cincy played us as a much better team than their record indicated them to be.

Zero run game. Cincy’s defense seemed to be tackling our WR’s before the ball even got there. We definitely had to fight hard for that W. Kept me on the edge of my bar stool the whole game. I give alot of props to the Cincy D tho. Everytime we had a drive that would have put us up two scores, they held their own and got us off the field.

Edit: Oh..and I’m feeling pretty bad for Kuper this year. He seems like he’s got a case of the injury bug. Nothing is going right for Kup.

  • Gary_in_SD

Not only that, he forced a blatant holding call with a bull rush up the middle that not only negated a crutial long 3rd down conversion, it pretty much snuffed out any hope that Cincy had at that point in the game.

  • BroncosWin

I believe he should of said “had more yards than manning” quit defending pple and go be gay with jim jebow

  • BroncosWin

Nice one! Forgot about that…. well played gary… well played

  • BroncosWin

  • BroncosWin

Very good point…. I agree completely… once these dudes got their shot on the field… boom. They play lights out every game.

  • BroncosWin

    LoL

  • BroncosWin

    Win.

  • BroncosWin

Man! There was a point there in the 4th (when Cinci went up by three) that I was beginning to get frustrated and saw the old, self-destructive 2007-2009 Broncos coming out. But within seconds I got a hold of my self and calmed down.

I said “okay this is a close game, all the better to watch.” And what do you know! This team has the will to win! I’m more impressed with our defense every week and I can’t even begin to express the excitement I have for this offense going forward.

    GO BRONCOS!! SUPERBOWL BOUND!!!
