denver-broncos-blogsDenver Broncos News

  • One writer puts together a seething fake letter from John Elway to Denver Broncos fans regarding Tim Tebow.  Much of it rings true, but the fading Tebowmaniac in me would have responded with, “Yeah, but he wins.  He took a team that lost 20+ games in two seasons and went deep into the playoffs.”  2011 is a season I’ll cherish forever. [New York Times]
  • Peyton Manning and Keith Brooking all broke into the league in that magical year of 1998. Ronnie Hillman? He was 7.  It’s been a long time Broncos fans… [Denver Post]
  • Preseason games mean nothing, we all know that.  The Detroit Lions went 4-0 then 0-16 one time, the St. Louis Rams went 4-0 then 2-14 another.  I wish someone would tell me how many teams make the playoffs who go 3-1 or 4-0 in the preseason. [Denver Post]
  • It looks like Brock Osweiler is apparently going to get mentored by Manning after all.  He’ll have no excuses once he gets his shot to lead this franchise to greatness.  Fans like me can’t wait to be judgmental. [Denver Post]
  • More training camp updates from Andrew Mason.  If you can’t be there in person, then this is definitely the next best thing! [MaxDenver.com]
  • Oh and rookie hazings continue, this time with some good old fashioned property damage and hooliganism.  I preferred the dorky haircuts myself. [Yahoo! Sports]

Tebow seems a lifetime ago. Last year was fun but this year is going to be so much better.

Has Hillman been able to practice once since injuring his Hammy? I was really hoping to get to see him in action this weekend but that doesn’t seem too likely to happen.

Sorry, Tim, but if the Broncos had the 2010 defense, nobody would be saying Tebow “just wins.” In fact, Andrew Luck would be playing for the Broncos today . . .

Seething? Does someone need their pampers changed?

Meh…Broncos were 1-4 last year with the same defense under Orton. We’ve been around this circle…Orton choked, Tebow sucked, then made magic. It is what it is and I enjoyed the ride while it lasted. Definitely looking forward to see what happens with Manning…

I do change diapers on a daily basis.

It wasn’t the same defense, and you ought to know that. With virtually no preseason, they started with a brand new scheme, changing from a 3-4 to a 4-3, with a brand new HC and DC, a rookie at SLB and a MLB who had played very little there before, and with Dumervil, Dawkins, and D.J. all injured or playing hurt. By the time Tebow began throwing the ball everywhere but between the sidelines, the defense had five games to gel, and injured players were returning to the lineup.

And with the same defense, the Broncos finished 1-4 under Tebow. Elway traded Tebow off because Tebow is not a good QB. Period.

So Orton started 1-4. Because of the maniacal Tebow lemmings, they yanked Orton before he was given the chance to pull the season out. Could Orton have done it? Well, for the 11 games in which he was healthy the year before, Orton AVERAGED 306 yards passing per game, while he was at the top of the league in YPC (which kills the argument that it was because he passed a lot). Moreover, he had 20 TDs vs. 6 INTs during that stretch for a passer rating of 96.0. It wasn’t his fault the defense was 32nd ranked and the running game was near the bottom.

Meanwhile, down the road apiece, during that same spell in 2011, Phyllis was throwing the ball to everyone besides his Chargers teammates. But they stayed with him. And I remember the horrendous starts by Big Ben. But they stayed with him.

And now, in yesterday’s games, while Tebow was “passing” at 39%, Orton was 7/10, including a beautiful 40-yard pass to the opponent’s five-yard line, where he split a double team (and then put it into the end zone). Even his interception was a pinpoint pass that bounced off the chest of the receiver. Orton actually outplayed Romo yesterday.

But, nope, the “magic” last year was performed by the defense, while Tebow was actually playing QB for about the last 5 minutes a game.Without that defense, the Broncos would have finished at the bottom of the LEAGUE, let alone the Division.
