Brian Xanders

Just a bit over two weeks after the 2012 NFL Draft, the Denver Broncos have decided to part ways with general manager Brian Xanders.

Per the Denver Post:

“John [Elway] and I had a lengthy conversation today and we mutually decided to part ways for the best interest of my career aspirations,”’’ Xanders said. “I appreciated everything that Pat Bowlen has done for the Broncos and for bringing me here in 2008. It was great working with Coach John Fox. I’m telling you, he’s a great coach to work with. And it was great working with John Elway.”

Brian Xanders joined the Broncos with former coach Josh McDaniels after fourteen years with the Atlanta Falcons.

In his four years with the Broncos, Xanders’ role was a bit of a mystery to the fans. After the firing of Josh McDaniels, Xanders claimed that McDaniels had the final say and made all of the decisions. When Elway took control of the Broncos front office it was widely accepted that he had a strong hand in the Broncos war room. The Broncos also promoted scout Matt Russell to the Director of College Scouting.

What do you think Bronco fans? Will Elway take over the General Manager responsibilites, promote Matt Russell again, or even bring someone from the outside?

Well if they hire someone with the initial N we can always say that EF’N staff. . .!!!!

It is entirely possible that Xanders was not on the same page as Fox and Elway.  That is the impression I get anyway.

Okay, this is a good move. Bronco fans understand the caliber player in Manning committed to this team for a reason and it wasn’t Zanders… Anyone HAS to believe Elway is a sensible business person and knows this game much more than any of us to make the educated decision…

Anyone get feeling of a team that’s similar to 94 95 ? Vet quarterback, defense with some vet leadership, new rookie d talent Wolfe(Trevor pryce), just need a Terrell Davis type to emerge!

    Nola broncos fan

Mr. East, I agree Xanders role was a mystery? I for one cannot name any other GM’s in the league, I just don’t care much about it. It appears that Elway has been managing the Broncos ever since he was hired!?  No need for  2GM’s?  I just want training camp to fire up!!

After a bit more reflection, it did occur to me that the Broncos are NOT falling into the one-man-runs-the-show trap again. Duh. The other guy is John Fox. Elway isn’t coach too.

This model now isn’t dissimilar to how tons of franchises are run. Elway is basically the GM. He’s proven to be a savvy executive, after all (see: Manning, Peyton).

I was just actually a Xanders fan. I think 2011 is the only draft in his years with the Broncos where he had any real power, and it turned out pretty damn good.

    The Johns?

Interesting to read everyone’s discection of the dynamic.  The only constant is change in the Not For Long League.  For what its worth my 2p of speculation is that Elway made the decision to trade out of the first, Xanders wasn’t happy with it and because of that didn’t negotiate the best deal he could from Tampa and Elway was, rightfully, upset.

The one thing  that you can be sure of is that there is no set model for running a successful sports team, no matter what sport your playing.

I haven’t liked him and I always will.

Who gives a damn about Broncos winning front office executive? lol I want Super Bowls not espy awards.

I still think he’s rather weak for letting two different guys stomp on his duties.

He doesn’t seem like a strong leader to me. If he’s not willing to challenge Elway or try to make some of his own decisions, then I say good riddance.

I really don’t like calling Cutler a proven franchise quarterback. Also, Peyton Hillis was/is a mess, and the same goes for Marshall.

I’m just glad you didn’t mention Scheffler like he was a Pro Bowler.

Shanahan has his messes too, you must a have selective memory.

    Shanahan’s drama:

    – Cap rigging with Elway
    – Cap rigging with TD
    – Brian Griese
    – Maurice Clarrett
    – Travis Henry
    – Letting go Bertland Berry
    – Letting go Reggie Hayward
    – Letting go Trevor Pryce
    – Fighting with Jake Plummer
    – Missing the playoffs in 2007 after being 7-2
    - Guaranteeing that the Broncos would make the playoffs in 2008
    – Fathering the biggest implosion to lose four straight games and miss the playoffs

It’s not that there wasn’t drama then, it’s just old wounds that you’ve forgotten about.

Dan Reeves was crazy even before this.

    We didn’t start the fire.

I didn’t think it was that good. I mean it wasn’t a bad draft by any means, but unless Rahim Moore pans out it will remain as slightly above average to me.

Getting Von Miller with the second overall pick wasn’t really rocket science. I mean, you could have picked anyone in the top five last year and it would have looked amazing.

Last year’s first round was stacked. Ten of the top eleven are either Pro Bowlers or potential Pro Bowers, the only exception being Blaine Gabbert.

I believe this was pure economics per Mr. Bowlen.  Same with the draft.

Just consider the possibility that Mr. Bowlen told the ‘stool’ to trade out of the first and find me 20 guys at minimum wage.

Sure their all good, sure they all have upside to be ‘diamonds in the rough’, sure the last 13 didn’t have a choice.

Sure the ‘X’ part of the stool wasn’t happy.  See ya . . . and actually kinder than the ax job that Shanahan received.

Most folks felt it might have been time for Shanny to move on; but the way he was treated and the way Mr. Bowlen handled it, was downright disgusting.

Brian Xanders is gone because the owner of the football team wanted him gone.  Period.

Same with hiring Elway, same with getting rid of Tebow, same with going after and getting Manning.

    Remember who owns the team.

     Obviously.

Then they would be qualified for the Secret Service!

Consider that if the Broncos don’t win games they don’t make money.  In other words the probability of your scenario being accurate is somewhere between zero and none.

Xanders has been a joke. If its true that mcdaniels drafted who he wanted why was Xanders around? Xanders was a bozo. Glad he is gone. I have been calling for this for years. Can Elway do the job? I don’t know. Can we get someone better than Xanders? Hell yeah! Xanders was the worst. This is a great day for the Broncos. What a great offseason. We get a qb and get Xanders out of town. Thing are looking up!!!

  • 12508

Elway is a god. Let’s get real here. We are lucky to have Elway around. He cares. No Elway no Manning. No Elway no Super Bowls. Elway might make a few mistakes but he is trying to do the right thing. Xanders or Elway?

  • Anonymous

He wasn’t much of a check or balance on either Elway or McDaniels.

  • http://broncotalk.net Monty

But maybe he was. I still think he had most influence in 2011 draft, which turned out great so far.
