The 2012 NFL Draft is just one week away and barring a trade, the Denver Broncos will be selecting 25th overall in the first round.  Below are five prospects I like for the Broncos, if they fall to No. 25.

1.  Dont’a Hightower (6-2, 265 lbs.), MLB, Alabama (Highlights, Scouting Report).

Notes:   Of the many NFL.com mocks that I have seen, Hightower has often been available when Denver comes on the clock (of course, anything can happen on draft day — so mocks should be taken with a several tablespoons of salt).  If Hightower is still on the board when Denver makes their pick, he would be my selection of choice, followed closely by the prospect listed below.

2.  Dre Kirkpatrick (6-1, 186 lbs), CB, Alabama (Highlights, Scouting Report).

Notes:  Kirkpatrick is one of my favorite prospects for the Broncos but it seems unlikely that he will fall to Denver on draft day.  If he falls to No. 25, I don’t see him falling any farther.

3.  Jerel Worthy (6-2, 308 lbs.), DT, Michigan State (Highlights, Scouting Report).

Notes:  There’s a consensus among the NFL.com writers (as of April 17th) that Worthy will be the Broncos’ selection at 25th overall.  The pick would make sense as Denver’s defensive tackle position needs to be upgraded and Worthy would provide a solid addition to the Broncos’ defensive line.

4.  Michael Brockers, DT, LSU (Highlights, Scouting Report).

Notes:  Brockers is another defensive tackle option.  Both Brockers and Worthy have explosive ability to break through the line and track down quarterbacks and running backs.

5.  Stephen Hill (6-4, 215 lbs.s), WR, Georgia Tech (Highlights, Scouting Report).

Notes:  You will hear a lot of yakking leading up to the draft about how the Broncos plan on drafting weapons for quarterback Peyton Manning.  Hill potentially could end up being one of those weapons.

Those are my top five players.  Who are your favorite first-round prospects?

Click on Jerel Worthy’s highlights (http://youtu.be/NsGf5i-_dCE) and go to the 2:18 mark. I went crazy when I saw that play.

I don’t understand why Worthy isn’t considered a top ten pick. The dude looks like a flat out baller.  EFX should grab him at 25 if he is there.

Thanks for the article Jon.   Good read.  I loved the highlights on Worthy.

One kid starting to intrigue me is Shea McClellin, he can play mlb olb and de. Hes got the speed to cover (4.6) and a knack for  making tackles for loss and sacks. We need a DT but I like the value later (Reyes, Thompson, Martin Wolfe) and a versatile player who can move around and get to the QB is invaluable, if we add him we’d have two.

    According to Walter Football-

    Lacks elite characteristics
    Not consistent
    Disappears at times
Needs to refine pass-rushing moves for NFL guards
    Conditioning needs to improve
    Bigger reputation than actual production

Great read Jon . . . still say Brockers, or Worthy, then have at it . . . we have to address a few needs, I can see the need for Hightower and Kirkpatrick (although I think they’ll be gone) for the near future . . . but the present calls for a DT.

This means we would draft Wright or Fleemer

Same website on Von Miller last year:

Very small frame (Didn’t seem to effect him). Gets overwhelmed at point of attack (Didn’t notice). Weak versus the run (Looked pretty good to me). Hand use could improve (Not an expert there). Needs to add strength (They’ve obviously never met him). Strictly a 3-4 outside linebacker (That’s a laugh).

    Just sayin’.
