We knew that former Denver Broncos wide receiver Brandon Stokley — a former teammate of Peyton Manning‘s — stopped by Dove Valley on Saturday to help the Broncos try to sway Manning.
What we didn’t know was that Stokley also ran about fifty routes for Manning on Saturday morning at Castle Rock Park. Stokley said Manning looked great and his arm looked like it did “six years ago,” according to the Denver Post‘s Mike Klis.
“I’ll put whatever reputation I have on the line behind that guy right now. He looks great,” Stokley told Klis.
Stokley, 35, is also a free agent and is very familiar with Manning, so we wonder if Denver would be interested in signing him, too — if the team landed Manning. It is widely known that Manning wants former teammate Reggie Wayne to follow him wherever he signs in free agency, might he want Stokley to follow, as well?
With talented, younger receivers, the Broncos may decide to overlook Stokley. Signing him to at least compete in training camp would be the least that they could do if he helps persuade Manning to sign in Denver, though.
Then again, Stokley may not even be interested in returning to Denver — but running routes for Manning before encouraging him to sign with the Broncos does not suggest that he is ready to walk away from the game. A thirteen-year veteran, Stokley spent part of last season on the Giants roster.
From 1999-to-2011, Stokley has played for five teams and has caught over 330 passes for 4,680 yards and 34 touchdowns. A two-time Super Bowl Champion, Stokley’s best season came in 2004 when he caught 68 passes for 1,077 yards and 10 touchdowns.
Stokley was Manning’s teammate for four seasons in Indianapolis and was a Bronco for three more seasons after leaving the Colts. If the two have plans to reunite in Denver, we would be all for it.
