With only Tim Tebow and Adam Weber under contract in 2012, John Fox confirmed Monday what many had already concluded — the Denver Broncos will be signing a couple of quarterbacks this offseason. They’ll want four QB’s under contract when they head into training camp in July.

“Who, what, where, when, what market — it’s still way too early how we get those quarterbacks,” Fox told The Denver Post, seemingly leaving the door open for the Broncos to retain unrestricted free agent Brady Quinn, though the report does not mention him.

As for Tebow, he’s still the presumed starter.

“He’s going to come into our camp as the starting quarterback,” Fox said. “He’s young. He can get better.”

Fox also endorsed Tebow working out with UCLA offensive coordinator Noel Mazzone. “I think it’s great,” Fox said. “It beats sitting on the couch somewhere.”

The free agent QB market is pretty slim. If I had to guess, I’d look for the Broncos to spend one of their earlier draft picks (Rounds 2-4) on a quarterback and keep Brady Quinn.

Quinn and Weber as backups is fine IMO, got get some D

Sounds reasonable to me. I would prefer we sign Quinn. He’s a great backup and still has starter “potential”. He’s young, this will be his 3rd year with McCoy and 2nd under Fox so I say keep him.

Hopefully, we don’t draft a QB until the 4th or 5th. Until Weber proves he doesn’t have potential, I’d like to roll with him.

We have more than enough holes to fill on defense to be drafting a QB in the 2nd or 3rd.

Meh, this is a “non-story”…. Of course we’ll sign 2 more QBs… We’d sign 2 more QBs if we had Aaron Rodgers instead of Tebow. An NFL franchise can not enter training camp with only 2 QBs on their roster. It just can’t. There are too many drills to be run, too many positions that need someone to throw to them, and too many reps with backups, 3rd, 4th, 5th stringers for only 2 QBs to accomplish. Does anyone really think that Tebow will play every snap in every preseason game? Umm… NO!!! Does anyone think that Tebow and Webber will play every snap in the preseason? NO!  1st and 2nd stringers typically take the last week of the preseason off, which leaves the 3rd and 4th stringers shouldering the workload. NFL teams usually carry 2-3 QBs on their 53 (54 cause of the new “emergency” QB rule) man roster anyways, with usually 1 QB on the practice squad. Lets see what the kindergarten math says about that…. 2 + 1 + 1 = 4… Yep, 4 QBs sounds about right!

So where should they go to add the QBs Big Pete?

Obviously we knew this already too — I wrote it in the first sentence of the post: “…Fox confirmed what many had already concluded…” But sometimes we write stories about the state of the Broncos in part to get people commenting and talking about what do in that regard.

More than likely 1 in draft, 1 in free agency. Most teams draft rookies when they don’t have an established #2 (which we don’t), and they usually pick up a free agent if they don’t have an established #2 because the free agent can A) push the starter, B) hopefully teach the starter a few things either maturity wise or playing wise, C) have a bit of experience, if even only spot time duty or preseason, and D) usually come cheaper than rookies when you look at them skill for skill.

Begs the question though: should at least one of the QBs the Broncos pick up at least *push* Tim Tebow?

  • http://broncotalk.net Monty

    Haters gonna hate.

I think Vince Young would be a good back-up.  I bet he could fill in for Tim Tebow pretty well if he had to.

  • MiKey55

So the chiefs signed stanford routt. Which means they will probably tag Bowe and let brandon Carr walk. Does anyone think the broncos could make a move to get Carr. A number two to eventually be our number one. He is only 25

  • Hansen

Absolutely yes.  That is best for the team.  If Teebs responds and matches the competition level then good for him and the team.  If the other QB beats him out that is good for the team as well.

  • http://broncotalk.net Monty

I’d rather have Carr than some rookie.

  • CJ

Carr has good measurable and i think he would be a wise pickup. Being he comes at the right price.

As far as quarterbacks go i think it would be a mistake drafting a qb in the 4th or 5th because theirs hidden talent in those rounds. Every year there is a defender that’s decent.

I believe Doomervil was a fourth rounder. Why waste it on a backup qb when you can sign a vet in free agency that can actually help Tebow while pushing him?

  • Anonymous

    Vince Young. Just watch.

  • anthony33

They draft a QB, but only if they truly feel he can be an NFL QB.  Otherwise, like many have mentioned, it’s a waste considering all our other needs.  I am fine with Weber, Brady depending on his attitude is also a possibility unless someone makes a run at him in FA.

I know I am about the only one on this board that thinks Kellen Moore has a legit shot, but I’d take him if he is there in round 4 and maybe round 3.

  • CJ

I like Kellen Moore but not till the 6th. 3rd or 4th is way to soon for a qb in my mind. Just me

  • MiamiMike

I agree with you. My only question is will he be enough to push Tebow or just settle in as a back up? This goes fit any QB who comes in. How much really through free agency this year will we find someone other than to be a back up? Who really is there that will come in be strong enough to deal with Tebow fans and more important be really good enough to even challenge Tebow? I just think this is about a back up not to challenge for starting position

  • Anonymous

Yeah absolutely but can’t Weber or Quinn push Tebow if they are given a chance in precamp and at least 1 of them looks good? A rookie isn’t going to push any harder and what vet is going to push Tebow harder?

I see a lot of people saying Vince Young and I get why but let’s be honest, that kid sucks and has no heart. He isn’t pushing Teebs.

  • Anonymous

Well, I think it’s official… Brady Quinn won’t be back. Not after his GQ article.

  • http://broncotalk.net Monty

     Yup. Posting about this momentarily.

  • http://Facebook.com/BroncosZone Jon

Yup. About to write about it.

  • http://Facebook.com/BroncosZone Jon

    WHOA! LOL, go ahead.

  • Hansen

I don’t think Weber can push Teebs at this point b/c his lack of experience last year.  Quinn – probably, maybe???  But would he get a legit shot at the #1?

Vince Young – NO!  He is a head case.  I’m not sure if Quinn is going to stick around.  Honestly, I don’t know what NFL vet can be signed though the first name that comes to mind in Flynn, but he has ?s too.  Just my high-level assessment: Broncos need a vet to push Teebs.

  • TD30ismvp

Young as a back up would be great, Maybe they could learn off of each other and salvage Young’s career.  The Browns ruined Quinn with that mess they had going on there with Anderson and him.

  • http://broncotalk.net Monty

     Haha, just saw this.

  • MiKey55

It would be nice to see Carr signed to a 5 year 40 million type deal. Yeah it’s a lot but champs almost at the end and goodman is at the end. So we dump goodman hopefully with minimal cap penalty, draft a
Corner in the 2nd or 3rd and a defensive tackle in the first. Then we would have champ Carr Chris Harris rookie and one more spot. Sydquan Thompson maybe?
