What is that over the horizon? A six foot, two inch, three hundred and six pound defensive tackle who is only twenty seven?!

Yes, indeed it is! According to ESPN, the Eagles have dealt former first round pick Brodrick Bunkley to the Broncos for a ‘2013 draft pick.’

Bunkley was initially traded to the Browns for a fifth round pick in 2012, but since he did not show up the deal was cancelled.

Bunkley was drafted 14th overall in 2006, and has notched six sacks in his six seasons in Philadelphia. Since coming out of FSU, Bunkley has not lived up to his full potential with the Eagles. Hopefully John Fox can fix that problem.

Worthy to note that the Broncos got Bunkley and their other defensive lineman pickup, Derrick Harvey, for 1 year contracts at the league minimum for their experience (via Denver Post). It's really nice to see management that actually understands getting a bargain and not overspending.

  • Bbigg

Does anybody know why he didn't report to Cleveland? And why we expect him to report to Denver?

  • MrEast

Probably because the Browns play there.

  • MrEast

Harvey would have to pay Denver for it to be a bargain. However, the juice is worth the squeeze with Bunkley, if anything he'll just be a big body in the middle.

  • Bbig

    Haha. Touché

You can get plenty of bargains at a Dollar store. It's all stuff Walmart wouldnt sell because its crap. I don't care how many former 1st round picks we sign this offseason if you can only get them at the Dollar store. The Eagles are getting players to help them win a Super Bowl. I guess this former #1 is so bad he can't help. LETS GET REAL. We have signed a bunch of nobody's this offseason. Too many TE and WR's on this roster. We give a third string RB too much money. We let go of a proven OT in the NFL. We don't sign any BIG free agents. Some people say that's smart. No it's not. It just proves what a disaster Xanders has been since they went down to the mail room and made him the GM. There is no money to be spent on good players. This team is in salary cap he'll with an average roster. What's next? If Tebow or Orton don't work out we will call a former #1 like Ryan Leaf and hope Fox can get something out of him. You know what GM's in the NFL like? Other Craig GM's they can run circles around and laugh at during the offseason. THEY LOVE BRIAN XANDERS EVEN MORE ON GAME DAY.

  • Paradisimo

God I hope we don't make a trade for him.

  • herc_rock

Word is he's not going to report here either.

  • Paradisimo

Yes, let's piss away money on big name free agents because that is how you rebuild a team.  It worked so well for Josh McDaniels that we should just stick to that same formula.  It sure makes more sense than giving ex-first round free agents one year, minimum salary contracts.  Maybe Kris Jenkins will come out of retirement and we can give him a 4 year $20M contract.  That would sure make our team better.

  • Paradisimo

I heard that he did report to Cleveland but that the details of the trade never got finalized and so it was voided.  I also heard that it may have been cancelled due to a failed physical.  Where did you see that he might not report?

  • MrEast

“You can get plenty of bargains at a Dollar store. It's all stuff Walmart wouldnt sell because its crap.”

Well put. If this is the type of free agency Denver is having then it is obvious that Xanders didn't do anything before hand, because at least McDaniels went out and signed players.

  • MrEast

Maybe he can hang out with Osi.

  • herc_rock

The dudes on 104.3 yesterday.   I didn't hear what their source was, but they were saying he was trying to force a straight up release and wasn't going to report anywhere he was traded to w/out a new deal.

  • td30ismpv

Looks like Ryan Harris will re-sign with the Broncos today according to multiple reports.

  • 12508

Hey PARADISIMO do you think any of the 2011 free agents are impact players? I bet you do. Any of them sign with us? Anyone even come in to talk? Why is that? Because money talks. You mean to tell me we couldn't sign a free agent that would help? Instead we sign a bunch of nobody's who would probably be playing in the XFL if it was still around. Getting Jenkins to come out of retirement sounds like a good idea to me. He has a few pro bowls under his belt. What do these have bums have? Former 1st round picks? It should just say 1st round bust next to all of them. BARGAIN???? It's a waste of money and time. I would rather they just take this money and shove it up Xanders $$$. He hasn't earned a dime of whatever they pay him. I STARTED ON XANDERS A LONG TIME AGO. IM GLAD TO SEE SOME OTHERS COME AROUND THIS YEAR. THIS CLOWN SHOULD HAVE BEEN FIRED A LONG TIME AGO. HE SHOULD HAVE NEVER GOT THE POSITION. WHERE DID THIS GUY COME FROM? NO ONE IN THE HISTORY OF THE NFL HAS DONE SO MUCH DAMAGE TO A TEAM IN SO LITTLE TIME. I JUST HOPE ELWAY CAN OVERCOME THIS. JUST HAVING XANDERS SIT IN THE SAME ROOM ON DRAFT DAY MUST HAVE BEEN HARD. XANDERS PROBABLY WANTED TO TAKE A FEW MORE TE OR ANOTHER QB IN THE 1st ROUND THAT WOULD BE THERE IN THE 3rd. I WISH I COULD MAKE THESE LETTERS A LITTLE BIGGER. GET XANDERS OUT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • dbroncs 24/7

So everyone rips on McDaniels for signing over the hill players to larger contracts, and now we are targeting young players with small contracts and people are missing McDaniels??? I guess the grass is always greener… can't have it both ways, pick one

  • Bucky

a couple of things, First of all, to say that no one has ever done more damage faster than Xanders is just silly, and for more than one reason. Let me give you a couple of them; first of all, he has never been given full GM power, even McD was here, Xanders was not given full control over the drafts or free agents, second, bone up on you NFL history man, have you ever heard of the Lions? or Al Davis? I know your upset, but making stupid comments that are obviously false is just not worth the time it takes you to write it down.

Finally, I know this is a blog, so you can write what ever you want, however you want. But for the love of all blogdem, please do not subject us to your all caps thread crapping, it is does not help your point, it does not add emphasis, it simply makes a reader decide that you have nothing legitimate to say, which I guess in your case is true, but still, at least make your argument worth reading, ok? Thanks!

  • MrEast

I didn't rip on McDaniels for signing Jamal Williams or Justin Bannan. I ripped on him for not drafting DTs, which is still a problem with the new front office.

I don't care if Derrick Harvey is young, he's not good. Would you like it if Xanders made a trade for Jarvis Moss? Probably not, because he's not good.

  • Mkross

SOME PEOPLE WILL NEVER BE SATISTFIED. GIVING ALL THE FORMER #1'S A CHANCE TO REGAIN WHAT GOT THEM TO #1'S CAN ONLY HELP THE BRONKO'S. ALL THE BIG EXPENSIVE HELP IS GONE. (IF THEY WERE THAT GREAT WHY WEREN'T THEY RETAINED?) THE FORMER #1'S HAD WHAT IT TOOK TO BECOME #1'S ONCE, SPEED QUICKNESS, ECT. WHY NOT TAKE A CHANCE TO SEE IF THE CHANGE IN LOCATION AND COMPETION SERVES UP A STAR OR TWO. AT THIS POINT IN THE GAME WE HAVE LITTLE TO LOSE. REMEMBER WE WERE THE WORST IN THOSE POSITIONS LAST YEAR. IF THEY CAN'T PLAY THEY WON'T MAKE THE ROSTER. AS FORMER #1'S THEY HAD THE TALENT BUT COULD MAKE THE TRANSITION TO THE NFL BUT SHOULD HAVE. REBUILDING MEANS GETTING SOME BARGINS. IT TAKES MANY PLAYERS TO MAKE A SUPER BOWL TEAM.

  • Mike

Caps Lock. It doesn't help your position, and only makes you look like a whiny ass yourself. Getting first round “busts” at the league minimum is a low risk high reward scenario, and Bunkley isnt'y really a bust he's a 4-3 DT who absorbs blocks for other people. It was never his primary job to get to the QB in Philly or at FSU. His main job is to fill holes in the run game and free up blocks for rushing LB's and the DE's.

  • dbroncs24/7

I didn't intend to single you out but the fact is most people didn't approve of bringing in the older players (williams, and Jarvis Green) with big contracts that didn't perform and were cut. I'm not saying Harvey is good but he could get better with good coaching, he was cheap, and we have to have more bodies in camp this year anyways.

  • 12508

What is the GM's job? xanders was the GM right?sometimes a head coach will say “I think we should sign this guy” . GM would say” hello no that guy stinks”. Coaches coach. If xanders couldn't do the job or didn't have the heart to tell Josh no who's fault is that? I wouldn't blame Josh for that. Bottom line is Xanders has been awful. It took Matt millen a lot longer than Xanders. If I recall the lions drafted in the top 5 almost every year before Matt took the job. How long did it take Xanders to get us innthe top 5. Al Davis has been around since the 1800's and has a few rings so I wouldn't compare Xanders to him. Maybe you should learn a little football history yourself. No caps. You happy? Xanders still needs to go and this roster if full of players who wouldn't cut it on other squads. A lot of them. I'm sure some of you still have hope tho. Good luck with that. I would rather be good.

  • 12508

Hey mike I'm sure you could absorb blocks in a 4-3. Maybe you could get the league minimum from Xanders. I don't want players who absorb anything. I want playmakers. Nose takles in a 3-4 should be taking up blocks. Why don't we sign some offensive tackles who only run block too? Specially if they are first round bust. I would call them a bargain too.

  • http://Facebook.com/BroncosZone Jon

That's crazy because the team moved on from him and Franklin already took #74.

  • Mike

Who would you have bought? Or gone after? Cofield? We tried but Washington overpaid to the tune of 6 million a year straight from the gate. Mebane? We tried, he chose to stay at Seattle for 5 million a year. Jenkins? He wasn't as good as Cofield or Mebane and still got 5 million a year from Philly. Williams? We tried, and pretty hard, but he chose to continue in Carolina as he stated he ALWAYS wanted to. Bradshaw? He chose to stay with his original team too. So who in hell do you want us to blow millions of dollars on just so we grab a “big name”?  Asomugha? Kolb? As for history maybe check your recent Bronco history before spouting off. Bowlen gave McDouchenuts the authority OVER Xanders for all final personnel decisions which is why Xanders wasn't fired along with Josh. His hands were tied by his owner. Cutler, Hillis, Scheffler, Marshall. All were McD's calls as he was allowed to have full rein over Xanders. Not saying Xanders is the best in the biz, but it's his first year give the guy some time, and not overpaying for some old high profile big money FA is in no way the makings of a bad GM.

    Not trading Orton is :D

  • Mike

Oui vey. Warren Sapp wouldn't have gone anywhere if it weren't for a guy named Brad Culpepper absorbing the blocks right next to him. Albert Hainsworth's money making year (2008) wouldn't have been nearly as successful without Brown and Vickerson anchoring the line and channeling blocks off him. Watch tape, or actually pay attention there's always one guy on the line who's job it is to take on 2+ Offensive Linemen. Even in a 4-3. theres 5 O-linemen vs 4 D-linemen one has to take more than one guy, except maybe in your world, but that has been this guys job his whole NFL career. Plug up the line and allow his teammates to go one on one is what this guy does and ever D be it 3-4 or 4-3 needs a guy for that purpose.

  • crazykid

I have two words for you:  MATT MILLEN

  • jdkchem

Excellent points and we're talking about Orton.  If you believe the Post then you cannot hang the lack of a trade on the GM.

  • Paradisimo

I could give a shit about picking up “impact” free agents this year.  It's going to take 2-3 years (at a minimum) before our team gets to a truly competitive level.  Why on earth would you want to screw up our future by spending additional money on a 4-12 team that will be lucky to go 8-8?!?  Name me one team that has bought their way out of mediocrity with BIG NAME free agents.  It doesn't happen and pissing money away on guys like that is typically what keeps teams as bottom dwellers for years to come.  See the Raiders and Redskins as prime examples.

  • jdkchem

So what you're saying is that you'll gladly pay for the Miley Cyrus label.

  • Mike

Yeah, the Orton trade fiasco really isn't on EXF, but i just don't like the guy, and needed some kind of a light hearted last statement.

Personally I didn't like Orton in Chitown, and don't here. He has accuracy but it always seems to be when it least matters. So i would have traded him to Miami for a box of Cubans and a sack of Valencia Oranges myself. :)  EXF has made some quality moves so far.  Some of us aren't happy and some are, but to call a guy out before his first real season with some power? Shoot players get 3 years before they get the “bust” tag and his first two he might as well have been tied down in a dark closet for all the power he had. With all that, if by trade deadline we have a 2nd round pick for Orton then holding out on the Miami deal was a smart move as well. Only time will tell, and we do need to give the new brain trust some time….. and a little actual trust. Heck they havent even taken the field for a Pre-season game yet.

  • td30ismpv

Well you are both kind of correct, neither is truly meant to absorb anything, both have different philosophies of gap control.  By nature the 4-3 has the tackles lined up in the gaps and their responsibilities are to penetrate and either blow up the inside run or collapse the pocket, while the ends have to “narrow” the pocket and turn the corner.  The 3-4 is designed for the tackle to plug the “A” gap and the ends have to plug the G/T gap and also have bootleg responsibility, while the Middle backers have to take on blocks and the Will and Sam clean up the trash.  Now that is just straight up, without stunts and blitzes.

  • VinceMarine

Well said Mike.  Finally someone who know what they are talking about!  Besides none of us can make any type of assumption on any of the guys the Broncos have signed prior to seeing them play in Fox's scheme.  Especially since we haven't even seen them in a preseason game.  We've been used to the “sexy” type signings in previous years with McD and Shanny.  Everyone just needs to relax and wait till the season starts to “evaluate” the talent….

  • jdkchem

It is rather classy on the part of EFX to run Orton with the 1st team.  They could have easily tried to punish Orton by sticking him behind Tebow.

  • LevonZevon

To be fair, Bowlen hasn't spent his missing Madoff millions on a top free-agent since Dale Carter (and of all his many sins, McDaniels didn't lavish huge salaries on top free-agents either).  Maroney and LeKevin Smith were ridunkulous trades, while Jarvis Green was a foolish free-agent signing (that I hope we don't repeat with Ty Warren).

We simply continued the tradition of paying for over-the-hill, 34-year-old “camp meat” at Defensive Tackle (that began with Shanahan's long list from McGlockton to Darryl Gardener to last year's Jamal Williams).  It was the 0-for-8 in top draft picks and insane trades and intentional antagonizing/alienating of Hillis and Cutler that make us justifiably hate McDaniels.

So we are now getting bargain-basement deals on first-round busts and
maybe Amobi Okoye will be the latest.

The first justification is “well, maybe they'll be late bloomers like Brandon Lloyd,” but he wasn't a first-round pick and he never was given the opportunity in previous stops.  I suppose its more that we are hoping to get a few mediocre Gerard Warren-type seasons from them (like he provided for Denver, New England and Oakland).

This team simply refuses to take chances on Defensive Tackles due to their risk-reward.  However, I'd like to think we wouldn't have passed on a guy like Suh if we were drafting #2 overall last year.

But we seem to be willing to accept the role of speed-over-size once again (even though we never stocked a true 3-4 in McDaniels nearly two seasons here). Most likely its a continued over-emphasis on the altitude factor that Elway can attest to when leaving heavy-breathing pass-rushers in the dust in the fourth quarter comebacks of yore.

But we better add a true stud DT in the next two seasons (and that means someone in a different universe than place-fillers like Brandon Mebane and Barry Cofield).  Otherwise Fox's reputation will be as deserved in developing D-line studs as Shanny's was with Hall of Fame QB's that were stars before he coached them (see Young and Elway and Strahan and Kris Jenkins/Julius Peppers).

Bunkley is actually “small” for a DT as is Okoye (and both were pushed around at the point of attack too often).  Both were drafted to penetrate, but if you can't hold your ground in this league you are finished (with apologies to Alan Page for those who remember the 70s Purple People Eaters).

But if it allows us to get the first overall pick and choose Andrew Luck, I'm all for it.  We aren't going anywhere this year even if we stole the Eagles harvest of free-agents.  It would be nice to see Fox hit the ground running and establish some fundamentals and success (and McGahee is an under-rated running back who can make Moreno the third-down back he needs to be).

But we will be fighting for the top draft pick with Buffalo, Carolina and Shanahan's directionless Redskins team (with a whole new crop of poor personnel choices since he inherited Orakpo at OLB, Landry at Safety and not much else).

I'm willing to give John Elway the benefit-of-the-doubt as he tries to fill some unglamorous spots to gear up for our 2015 Super Bowl push.  Three seasons is the minimum in putting it all together with a top signal-caller and until I see Tebow throwing the ball as naturally as past lefty ball-spinners such as Esiason, Stabler, Young and Vick– I cannot count him as the lone exception of a two year record of wasted draft-picks under McXanders.

The only good thing about rebuilding is that you don't linger at the bottom for a 6-8 year period like Oakland after Gannon and Gruden.

But it takes luck (and not just Andrew Luck).  Get used to rooting for Tebow and then fretting about how a fluke win like his late-season deefat of the Texans will affect our pursuit of the next Stanford great QB.

fuck u! greatest fan base in all of sports. fact.

Nothing against the fans man. The team just hasn't been managed well for the past decade.

Instead of starting thread crapping after thread crapping, you could simply reply to the people making all of those obvious corrections to your foolish thought processing and save us all a heck of a lot of time weeding through your comments.
