As of 2:00 PM Mountain Time, Kyle Orton became $1.5 million dollars richer. With thanks be due to Orton’s roster bonus, his bank account is looking just a little bit better today.

Since trade talks have collapsed between Miami this really looks like the nail in the coffin that keeps Orton in Denver for one more year.

Tim Tebow will have yet another NFL obstacle to clear if he wants to start this year. Orton has the experience, the relationship with the receivers, and the motivation to ensure that the starter job will be his opening day.

Think what you want about Kyle Orton, but he has handled this situation brilliantly. Orton’s confidence and maturity has only lead to him scoring a big payday and being the front runner for the quarterback position.

If Orton does indeed win the starting job, John Fox and offensive coordinator Mike McCoy‘s job will be to devise ways to get Tebow on the field. Tebow is too talented, too paid, and too hard working to simply ride the pine for the year. Now if only John Elway and Brian Xanders will sign a defensive tackle, seeing how there are none.

I know every broncos fan out there loves Tebow but i'm not sold yet.  Love his enthusiasm but Orton has the skills to take this team to the playoffs soon, IF our D can step up.  The Fins missed out on this quality QB.

Blah, Blah. I'm so over this guy. With Orton at center get ready for the dullest Broncos season ever!!

    No…we don't.

thier is no way the broncos make the play offs any way orten or tebow playing. The bad thing is the broncos blow a good chance of getting a draft pick for orten. They should of just started tebow and traded the not so good qb orten.

  • herc_rock

We were assured of the dullest season ever the second they hired John Fox.  Mike Martz he ain't.

Also, Orton is light years better than Tebow.

  • herc_rock

Good.  What the hell were we trying to trade him for anyway?

  • NW Bronco Fan

I'm OK with keeping Orton. He may not be flashy, but he's solid and dependable. The Orton haters whine about how he falls down if anyone gets too close, but Tebow starts scrambling if his first read is covered.
Orton will give Tebow time to develop his game and if the defense improves we'll have a good/great team.

Orton will still get traded– only latter in the summer when another starter goes down for someone.
Then Tebow starts and they bring in Jake Delhome as the backup. Fox said he wants a gamer and does 'anyone' the description fits Orton?

  • stuckinraiderland

Kyle Orton is to NFL quarterbacks as Rodney Dangerfield is to respected people.
I for one think that the best situation is for one more year of starting Orton and developing Tebow.

  • Frustrated

I don't understand why we are keeping Orton. If the decision had been made to trade him and start Tebow, why are we backing down? If you let Orton go is there not more money to spend on a Defensive Tackle? If Tebow can't do it, better to find out this year and get a high draft pick next year with a sorry losing record again than to win a game or two more and find we are in the same spot.

  • Reverendofrock

Because Orton was NOT the problem the last 2 seasons.  You don't seem to understand that, just because some is available to trade, there has to be another team that actually  needs/wants that player.  If Orton has more value to the Broncos than trading him for nothing, or cutting him, then by all means keep him!  Rushing and defense have been what's lacking the past 2 seasons, not QB play.  Orton has done just fine.  Sure, he's not flashy, or very mobile, but he's played smart and done well.  When your rushing attack is no better than my 9 month old granddaughter, and the defense stops the run like a sieve stops water, your team is doomed.  That's been us the last 2 years.  Fix those problems and Orton becomes a non-issue.  Well, except for those who want Tebow or no one!

  • Blah

Yeah there is that and then the fact that the Broncos offense SUCKED! What has two thumbs and put up twice as many points against SD then Orton? Tebow. Who is the only Broncos QB to lead a non-fluke 4th qtr come back in the last two years? Tebow.

There is a reason he went on the trading block with 6 teams needing a QB and not 1 of them wanted him.

  • NMBronc-in-DC

Agree as Quinn will likely win out. And Orton is an A$$ clown

  • NMBronc-in-DC

If he was not the problem, then why has he not been traded?

  • NMBronc-in-DC

The fact that Kyle “scream like a girl, collapse, and beg for no contact' Orton, just made 1.5 mil just made me question my love of football.

It's about Super Bowls. Don't just want to make the playoffs. We need a playmaker at qb. Down by 2 with 2 minutes left Kyle is not the guy I want behind center. Don't know if Tebow is the guy either. I would rather find out sooner rather than later. I live in NY. If Tebow starts I will get the games on DirecTv. If Kyle starts I watch the local games.
I have taken a lot of shots at BRIAN XANDERS on this site. He is the #1 reason the Broncos are in this position. We can't get a 4th round pick for Kyle. He gave up Hillis for Brady Quinn. What has he done to our salary cap? We can't even sign one decent free agent? We settle for a third string rb from the Ravens. It's hard to watch.

  • Reverendofrock

The fact that you stated that the OFFENSE sucked should be your first clue that you are wrong about Orton.  I'm not saying that Tebow shouldn't have a good shot at the starting job, I'm only saying that the problems on offense did not begin with Orton.

And I'm sure the reason that he didn't get a trade is because the price was too high.  I'm sure the Broncos wanted a lower draft pick next year than teams wanted to give up.  Orton's no superstar by any stretch, but he's a decent QB who got crapped on when Denver signed Tebow.  If Tebow would have gone to Indy, his fanatical fan base would be screaming to trade Manning!

Again, I've got nothing against Tebow at all, but his fans need to have some patience and let everything play out instead of annointing him the  second coming of Elway before he gets to prove it.

  • Reverendofrock

    See above response.

  • Reverendofrock

Thank you!!!  Xanders needs to go!  Maybe with Elway aboard, that'll happen.  We can only hope!

  • MrEast

    I agree completely.

Because Orton will not win a franchise a super bowl, yes Tebow is unproven but in a quarterback driven league you need exceptional not solid at qb spot,we need to see what Tebow can do.If hes crap maybe we draft a certain stanford quarterback next year.

  • Oh Well…

Looks like I'll I've some free down time on Monday Sept 12.  I wonder if there's a baseball game on…
