Barry Cofield

For all of those of the orange and blue hoping that defensive tackle Barry Cofield would sign with the Broncos, helping fill one of their biggest needs, you should be sad. According to Josina Anderson, the Redskins and Cofield have agreed to terms.

Cofield was considered one of the best free agents on the defensive tackle side, especially for a team that runs a 4-3. The best free agent left for a 4-3 team is Seattle’s Brandon Mebane, who still hopefully will remain unsigned.

The Johns and X have their work cut out for them. With players in the AFC West like Thomas Jones, Dexter McCluster, Jamaal Charles, Darren McFadden, Darren Sproles, and Ryan Matthews, a defensive tackle needs to be landed soon.

I'm not too worried about this.

You can't build from the draft by signing free agents on 6 year contract.

Although that said we do need *someone* to play there next year.

I'm a bit worried because the only returning DT on the team who is not a free agent is Kevin Vickerson.

i agree we need dt's, but i dont think that this particular guy was 'must have'.

  • MrEast

I disagree. With the free agents left in the market Cofield was someone the Broncos should have been fighting for. The best DT FA left now is Mebane. If the Mebane gets signed to another team, Denver is in some dire straits.

I believe what “guest” was saying is if you have a pile of poo does it really matter which turd you get? The free agent DT's have no all or nothing players.

You can't fix the defense this with one free agent defensive tackle.  Sure we need players to actually stand there when the season starts but I wouldn't go after someone this off season just because he's the best of a weak FA class – what you want is a long term solution and EFX obviously didn't see this guy as that.

Anyway, with the state of the D as it is, I doubt anyone signed this off season will start in Denver's next Superbowl appearance

  • MrEast

    Cofield is actually good.

  • MrEast

You can't fix it with one, but that would double the amount of capable starters on the roster. That's how bad the situation is.

Cofield is a great player for the 4-3 so it was sad that he seemed to get little or no consideration from the Broncos.

no argument from me about needing more DTs but the number of players cut, waived or passed on in the draft make me wonder if there is some strategy in place we can't see. or if there is a strategy at all.

What were they supposed to say to him? “Turn your phone off! Hopefully in a week or 3 we'll have an idea on what we can offer you”?
They could have WANTED him to their hearts' content….and Wash still would've signed him.

Pretty obvious EFX is flunking their 1st and most important to date test.
The Cowboys aren't having problems creating cap room.
